Earth Had Rings. And May Get Them BackAdded:
Wait, did Earth used to look exactly like Saturn? It turns out, yes. New evidence suggests that 466 million years ago, Earth had a massive ring system. A massive asteroid crossed Earth's Roche limit, the point where our gravity literally shredded it to pieces. There are mapped 21 craters from this era, and every single one is dead on the equator.
The odds of that being a coincidence are 1 in 25 million. This debris formed a dense ring that rained meteorites for millions of years. It also cast a permanent shadow over the planet, blocking sunlight and triggering the Huronian Ice House, one of the most brutal deep freezes in Earth's history.
But here's the crazy part, Earth might get rings again. We currently have millions of pieces of space junk in orbit. We could eventually use magnetic fields to corral this debris, creating a literal ring of space trash.
