NFL teams face a strategic decision during the draft between selecting the best player available (BPA) versus targeting specific positions of need. The Chicago Bears, with the 25th overall pick, exemplify this dilemma as they consider trading up for safety Dylan Theaman Pierre while also evaluating other needs like edge rusher or defensive tackle. This strategic choice reflects broader organizational philosophy, with some teams like the Lions prioritizing BPA to build depth across multiple positions, while others like the Vikings may prioritize immediate win-now players to address specific roster gaps.

NFL Draft is just days away... which way are the Bears leaning at pick 25? | 1st & NorthAñadido:
Players have reported to offseason workouts. Scouts and GMs are finalizing their draft boards. It feels like football season is really back. The countdown to the draft is on. We are just two days away. And tonight on First and North, we're getting you all up to speed on the latest in the NFC North.
Welcome into First and North. I'm Cassie Carlson joined this week by the voice of the Detroit Lions. Dan Miller from Fox Detroit. We have Lily Zhao from Fox Milwaukee and Pier Njam from Fox Minneapolis. Well, we heard from Bears players as they reported to Halis Hall for offseason workouts yesterday. And all offseason, Ben Johnson has said he is tired of getting the pats on the back for making it to the playoffs last year and that nothing they did last year matters anymore. And that was his message to his first team meeting, which which resonated with players returning who also have high expectations.
>> I want to be the best. I want to go win.
I want to be um as as we call it, a world champion. Um a Super Bowl champion. Um, I want to be a best Bear quarterback, best quarterback. And so, um, my goals, yes, that was a good stepping stone for me, but, you know, that wasn't the last stepping stone. And so, uh, being able to, um, grow off of last year, um, and and and be able to progress in ways that I want to, um, you know, that that last year wasn't wasn't really anything. It was a good year. Um, and we got we got many more good years coming up. We're looking to um not only get back to where we were last year with a chance to go to the NFC Championship game, but um to exceed that and and go win a Super Bowl.
>> So, you're hearing from Caleb Williams and Cole KT, two main stays on the offense, just knowing what it now feels like to win in the city of Chicago. And Caleb Williams saying it was important for him to feel that. But I love that the quarterback entering year three, entering year two, working with Ben Johnson is reiterating all of his goals that he has laid out for himself that he wants to achieve because last year before he had ever known what it was like to be coached by Ben Johnson, he had said that he wanted to be coached hard. And I think Ben Johnson did that and then some with his quarterback and he's expecting the same coming into year three knowing it's also a big year because after next season he is going to be eligible for a contract extension and for the Bears to have their franchise quarterback for Caleb Williams to continue to win and now be surrounded by weapons on the offense with guys like Coloulston Loand, Roma, Luther Burton, Jade Walker who he got together in LA.
They were throwing and hanging out at USC is all good signs. And I think you know the talk right now in Chicago is we are of course excited that the Bears are back in offseason workouts. But the real telltale sign is going to be how they look week one when they take the field and if they can pick up where they left off and if that intense training camp that Ben Johnson ran last last year that he said he is going to run again this year pays off and they are ready to get back to work. Well, we heard from the Vikings brass and wide receiver Justin Jefferson Pierre who said the team kept him in the loop on quarterback plans this off seasonason and he's excited to work with Kyler Murray. Take a listen.
>> I'm definitely looking for those, you know, big exciting plays. Uh, you know, definitely looking forward to his speed, his quickness. U his arm strength that he's he's shown countless times over the years. Uh, and then it's just, you know, for JJ for for somebody to enter that room with that type of ability, that type of talent, uh, you know, he's got to step it up a little bit. So, uh, it's good to for him to, you know, feel that type of pressure and to really, you know, lock in a little bit and say it's it's either now or, you know, I'm going to take that back seat again. So, it's all a competitive mindset when it comes to these type of things. Uh, so it's all about who's ready for that moment and who's ready to step up and, uh, take that initiative.
>> Pier, at times Justin Jefferson got a little critical of the quarterback play, especially this off season. What kind of sense did he get of his mood, his happiness, his mindset now that they did bring in Kyler Murray to to compete?
>> Yeah, my sense, Cassie, really is it hasn't really changed much in terms of the demeanor from what I've seen over just from Justin Jefferson over the years. And his only priority is winning.
That is his first and foremost priority is winning. And we saw the quarterback play last year, whether it was JJ McCarthy, Carson Wentz, Max Bromer, the quarterback play just wasn't up to par last year in Minnesota. And yet they still managed to win nine games, which is something that we're all still scratching our heads about. If we could have gotten a little bit better quarterback play, this team could have been in the playoffs last year. But really, when I get it from Justin Jefferson, hearing him talk last night, uh really the sense that I get that is he's excited that Kyler Murray is here.
He you heard the comments just a moment ago about JJ McCarthy saying, you know what, he's going to have to step it up.
And and he really is. He I didn't find that JJ or Justin Jefferson rather said anything untrue yesterday. It's pro football. Whether you're the quarterback position or any other position, somebody's out there gunning for your job. And if you don't perform, you may have to take a back seat. And this is a situation now where the Vikings are certainly leveling up their expectation of JJ McCarthy. You bring in Kyler Murray, and that says you better up your game here because if you don't, you may be the backup quarterback going into next season. So, this is a sign to Justin Jefferson that this team is absolutely committed to winning. That last year was not an acceptable result, not just in the overall record, but the quarterback play as well. And they want to get back to the level of competition that we saw just a couple of years ago when they won 13 games.
>> From what you've learned about JJ McCarthy over the last two years, how do you think he now feels now that Kyler Murray's in the building and the pressure that is on him and his ability to take that and accept it?
Well, I certainly think that he understands the situation right now and what is ahead of him. The one thing I will say about JJ McCarthy is the young man has a great attitude. He is certainly self-aware of how his expectations of what he wanted to have by the end of the regular season did not match what he had hoped for to produce for the Minnesota Vikings. There's no question about it. Um, but what I would say about JJ McCarthy is on top of having a great attitude, he needs to realize that this is the real deal now.
And and it's serious business because you don't bring in Kyler Murray assuming that he will be the backup quarterback.
You bring in Kyler Murray saying to JJ McCarthy, "Your job status as QB1 is now in jeopardy." And if you don't take that seriously and if you don't realize that this is the real deal right now, and you're in jeopardy of losing a starting quarterback job, I don't know what else is possibly going to motivate you at this point. Not that JJ McCarthy doesn't need motivation because like I said, he certainly is an intelligent young man with a great work work ethic and a great attitude, but the production last year did not match what the Vikings had expected. That's why they had to make this move. I certainly would imagine that JJ McCarthy is going to be extra motivated going into camp in the offseason.
>> All right, Lily, I want to turn to some Packers talk. We know that Matt Lafleur said he needs to do a better job identifying specific roles, especially for his receivers. But Romeo Dobs and Dantavian Wixs are no longer in that room, allowing for last year's first round pick, Matthew Golden, to emerge in year two. And former Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb drew on his own experience when talking about Golden's next stop.
>> When you're playing in an offense like this, you need multiple guys that can make plays. And uh yes, he was a first round pick and yes, the expectation was probably was really high, but I think his ceiling is really high. And to see him end the season the way that he did in Chicago was so proud of that moment and for him to have that opportunity.
Obviously wish the game would have turned out differently. Uh but but I think that's something to build on and and something for him to realize that he has the capability and he'll probably have more opportunity now with with less guys in the room.
>> Snow Golden's going to be playing alongside Christian Watson and Jaden Reed. Lily, do you believe he's built for more targets and and a more prominent role in this offense?
>> Yeah, I absolutely do. And you know, to Randle Cobb's point, he also mentioned, you know, you have to kind of know your role in the team. It took him a little bit, but you know, Randle Cobb was a terrific guy in the slot, and he knows that Matthew Golden will be another guy that will have a nice sophomore leap. I mean, if you look at their numbers there, they were very similar, Matthew Golden and Randle Cobb in their rookie season. So, I I think this is a big year for Matthew Golden to really blossom.
Like you mentioned though, there are two guys in a really packed wide receiver room that are no longer in Green Bay.
And uh on Tuesday morning, their GM Brian Gutakun also talked about the depth of their receiver room. He said he still likes it, but he also mentioned the word opportunity. There will be more for the guys in the current room because again, there are less bodies, but you have to like the trajectory that Matthew Golden was on at the end of the season, especially in that playoff loss to Chicago. Really bloom there. And uh you can talk about just you know he was injured a little bit during the season and force-feeding other receivers in that room in terms of Christian Watson Jaden Reed guys were injured guys were in and out and so you know there wasn't really a cohesive kind of jelling with that group that now that guys are coming back healthy the Packers hope that that's the case but I think there was a lot of expectation put on Matthew Golden solely because he was a first round pick. So I think everybody you know you have to lower your expectations a little bit but know that he will rise to the occasion in his sophomore season. So, I think there are big things ahead for Matthew Golden.
>> Dan, so much offensive line talk this off seasonason when it comes to the Lions. And we finally heard from quarterback Jared Goff on all the changes made signing center Kade Maze and free agency bringing in Larry Boram.
Here's what he had to say about the changes in front of him.
>> I'm excited to see um you know, Paneet step into even more of a role in that room being you know the longest tenure guy now. I'll miss the hell out of Taylor. I'll miss the hell out of Graham. those guys were were so special of friends and teammates for me and um it hurts you know as as a guy that you know you love those guys but it's it's out of out of my control obviously and um the team has to make certain decisions and uh they did and but with that said I'm excited about the new guys coming in and and Cade as a free agent and uh Larry and uh Scrugs and these guys we've we've added I'm excited you know it'll be great and good competition.
>> Dan, you know Jared Goff very well.
Well, he's obviously a veteran quarterback who's played with different offensive linemen throughout his entire career. How much does that give you confidence that no, regardless of who's in front of him, that front five or maybe what position they're playing, that he's going to be able to handle all those changes and lead that group as well?
>> Well, I think the important thing was that they made changes that helped the team. Since Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes got here, this team has been built around that offensive line for several years. You could look at it and say it might have been the best in the NFL and they leaned hard on that offensive line.
And that's really where that team's attitude came from. They felt like anytime they walked on the field with that group, they could play with anybody. If you wanted to play a slow game, they'd play slow. You want to race up and down the field, they could do that and give Jared time to utilize their weapons. But last year, you felt that slip a little bit. And even though they were still among the top scoring teams in the league, they didn't feel like they maximized their potential on offense. And that's one of the things that kept them out of the playoffs in particular in the run game. And Dan Campbell talked about this at the owners meetings recently. He said basically when we needed it, when we were good, it was there. When we needed it this past season, it wasn't there. So they went out this off season, as you mentioned, signed Cade Mays to come in and play center. They like what they saw from Tate Ratlage as a rookie at guard.
Paneet can play the right or left side, and he's one of the best in the NFL.
Boram is there to play the right side if they end up going in that direction. You might see them draft an offensive lineman in the first round and there's some competition at the other guard position and there may be more before all is said and done. So I think the important thing is they recognized that they needed to ramp that thing up again.
They've done that this off season. I don't think they're done by any means and I think they will continue to do what they have to do to get that thing back to where Goff can utilize his weapons and Gibbs and whatever they want to do in the running game is back to where it was in 2024.
>> Yeah. Every single mock draft that you read for the most part has the Lions taking an offensive lineman in the first round. We'll discuss that in our next segment. And Lily, I want to go back to the Packers cuz they were on a tailgate tour and a high school kid is adding to this whole Bears Packers rivalry stirring the pot in the high school gym.
I love it.
>> How does it feel, you know, the Bears beat off first round?
I'm I'm pass the Bears. They never beat me like that.
might have been a little baby when I was doing it, but bear with that little baby.
>> These Bear fans, they have one winning season and, you know, trying to rage bait us and, you know, get a reaction out of us, but uh no, we're not standing for it. Um, but no, yeah, some some high schoolers have definitely had a couple of strong opinions about their, you know, their fandom and and all that, but uh just had to let them know that, you know, we're coming for them this year and all the years to come.
So, was that in Milwaukee high school or where was that?
>> Yeah, it was in it was in Wisconsin.
They were on their tailgate tour. I forget which city they were in, but basically, you know, Randle Cop was like, I don't lose to the Bears. I've never lost to the Bears that way. But, hey, I'll pass the mic to Evan Williams and his team that did that uh two times the last season. So, that was part of the ribbing. But, um, you know, listen, the Bears really came they they talk the talk and they walk the walk, especially Ben Johnson. So, I think the Packers have to come out with the same fire this season. And listen, Evan Williams said what he said. It's it's great to talk about it, but go out there and go and beat the Bears. It was those two games again that they lost. They were in control, but couldn't finish the game.
Chicago with some miraculous comebacks like we, you know, talked about this season. So, listen, I I love the offseason Packers Bears rivalry and the talk. But this year, I want to see the Packers flip the switch back.
>> Yeah, Ben Johnson not backing down from playing into this rivalry. And it's going to be fun if the Packers now continue to toss it back at the Bears.
We need to take a time out when we return on First and North. We dive more into Thursday night's draft and what each GM is saying ahead of making their picks.
>> Kale gets it away. He's got to DO IT.
HOT DOWN.
>> YOU CANNOT MAKE THIS UP. I SWEAR. WHAT AN electrifying season for the Chicago Bears and THE CITY OF CHICAGO.
>> I'M Kathy Carlson. It's the off season.
We're keeping the excitement going all year long. They are positioned to make some moves. From the combine, >> the tape tells the story >> to the draft. Welcome to Chicago camp.
Everything to get you pumped for another wild ride, the offseason Friday night at 6 on Fox Local.
>> Welcome back to First and North. I'm Ka Carlson at our Fox 32 studios in Chicago. I'm joined by Dan Miller in Detroit, Lily Zhao in Milwaukee, and Pierre Newjam in Minneapolis. The draft stage is getting set up right outside of Steelers Stadium in downtown Pittsburgh.
They are expecting anywhere from 500 to 800,000 fans over the next three days.
And over the weekend, there was a major trade. The Giants traded Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence to the Bengals for the 10th overall pick. Now, the Giants have two picks in the top 10, making them the sixth team to have multiple first round picks this season.
And Lily, I saw your tweet. Pretty much sums up how things are going to be looking for the Packers. You'll just be chilling Thursday night because they don't have a first round pick. They traded it away as part of the deal for Micah Parsons. So, how do you approach draft night when you don't have any first round picks? What does it look like for you?
>> Yeah. Well, have fun, guys. Have fun with your first round picks. That'll be me watching all you guys um as you watch your teams make a pick in the first round. But, you know, Brian Gudens was asked that question. He said his process doesn't change. But I think what's interesting though is that in the past, you know, they have had a first round pick. It's their first draft since 2017 without one. So, you know, normally when you have, you know, players that are higher up on the board, higher picks, you know, they're more, you know, likely to contribute earlier on. And so, the Packers are able to pick kind of guys that were, you know, had a lot of potential, a lot of upside, but needed some development in those middle rounds.
And now they don't really have a choice.
Their first pick is number 52. So, do you kind of go more aggressive and, you know, try and find a guy who can make an immediate impact uh at pick 52 if that's where they stand? That's the big question. But he said their process hasn't changed. They're still going to get the best player available. But in terms of, you know, not having a first round pick, they're doing everything that they would have done last year, you know, when they had a first round pick.
So, now it's more about just how the board falls and whether or not they want to trade up. And goody did say if there's a guy you like in the 40 range, if they're still at 52 and they have the capital to trade up, they potentially would do so.
>> I'm not saying they're going to trade up into the first round, but all the reports heading into the draft is that it's going to be a tradeheavy first round on Thursday night. Dan, the Lions have the highest pick in the division in the first round, 17th overall. They have drafted the most first team all pros over the last five years under Brad Holmes. Can he do it again?
We still have some more work to to do um you know in the this week for sure. Um so we're not there yet. Um but we feel pretty good. Um you know I I I think we'll still be able to be uh able to get a good player. Um I do think that the this draft is not too much different than what's been in the past probably couple years. Um so uh but I I do feel obviously we're picking higher than we have been in the past. So hopefully that'll put us in position to get a better player.
>> Dan, we mentioned it in the last segment that offensive lineman seems to be the direction everyone believes that the Lions are going to go in the first round. Is that what you're locked into as well?
>> Yeah, that's usually when Brad Holmes laughs at you because you think you know what he's going to do and then he does something else. Yeah, I mean I I don't know.
It feel Yeah. Listen, it feels like an offensive lineman. I mean, but there's going to be a run at some point on these offensive linemen, and it depends on who's left. It depends on maybe he trades up and gets the one he wants, or he stays right where he is and doesn't like the offensive lineman on the board and he goes defensive lineman or he goes safety and he throws us all a curveball.
I think anything's possible, but it does feel like fortifying that offensive and defensive line has to be a priority for him. But here's the way Brad Holmes thinks. He's going to draft a guy he likes regardless of position. Now, that's not going to be a quarterback and and probably well, I'm not going to rule anything else out, but I I just think he looks at it like if he forces it to fill a need, he's going to get a player he doesn't like as much as another one that might be on the board. So, it's really dangerous territory to try to figure out exactly what he's going to do. But if they don't address offensive line or don't address defensive line, edge position in particular, at some point between now and training camp, they're still going to have to, but they're not going to box themselves in to thinking that they have to do it this weekend.
>> BPA, BPA, BPA.
>> We do it every year at this time >> and it's working. We just >> best player.
>> Well, look. Yeah. I mean, I think they're have look, they feel like they have top 10 players at quarterback, wide receiver, running back, offensive tackle, defensive end, linebacker, and safety. They like the way their roster's been constructed, and it has been that philosophy that's allowed them to do that. It's hard to argue with. They need some health and obviously to fill out some other positions.
>> All right, after the Lions comes the Vikings at 18, no GM, so the EVP of operations working alongside Kevin O'Connell. I feel like most mock drafts have them taking safety Dylan Theamman Pierre. Uh we we still don't know what Harrison Smith is doing, but uh what do you feel like they're leaning towards or what did you glean from the conversation?
>> Well, we heard Kevin Oonnell talk yesterday about whether or not Harrison Smith is going to return for next season and a decision still has not been made on that front, but Kevin Oonnell did say that no matter his decision, it won't have any bearing on what the Vikings decide to do in the draft. And like you mentioned, Cassie, Dylan Theamman has often been linked to the Minnesota Vikings at number 18 overall. But when I look at the Vikings draft right now, it's interesting you mentioned Kevin Oonnell because he just saw his general manager Quio Adulo Mensa get the axe.
And this to me feels like a draft that needs to be a win now type draft because Kevin Oonnell, as much as he's wellliked and respected in the organization, he's been the head coach four years and has produced zero playoff wins. So, the heat is certainly on Kevin O'Connell to get these type of win now players. And even though safety is a position of need, whether or not Harrison Smith comes back or not, safety will still be a position of need for this team. I'm starting to wonder if the Vikings might be looking out of the corner of their eye at potentially a wide receiver who might be there at 18. Would Kenyan Sadi at 18 make a lot of sense at tight end? We don't know the future of TJ Hawinson beyond this upcoming season. So, will it be a type of we need guys that can come in and win? Now, they still need depth at defensive tackle. That's still that would be my first priority if if I was in the seat. Defensive tackle is my first look in this draft. Perhaps a guy like Peter Woods might be there at 18.
You never know. I know there's a wide ranging uh opinions on Peter Woods who could potentially be there at 18 as well. But yeah, Dylan Theamman seems to be the consistent name that pops up in these mock drafts. But like I said, with the Vikings, it feels like a win now type draft. You got to find players that can help you win now. Can't wait a year or two for these guys to come around.
You need guys who can help you win now.
>> Gosh, when you say defensive tackle, I almost feel like then maybe the Vikings are going to look to trade back because the defensive tackles, I don't think are going to go off the board until later in this draft. And that's something a position that the Bears are looking at at 25. Uh we heard from Ryan Poles and assistant GM Jeff King today saying they are ready to be agile, whether that means move up, move back, or stay put as they try to add again to the roster.
We're after competitors. The best players and teams I've been around and been on compete daily, not just on Sundays in the fall. It takes more than talent just to win in this league and various conditions throughout the throughout the season. Um there's been a lot said about this draft. I think there's a lot of good football players in it. Um players that can help us um and fit our culture.
So, I think like we were talking about with Dan, that best player available is going to be the mode that the Bears are in. It's something we've heard of from them the entire off season, but the competition part from Jeff King that we just heard there, I think is intriguing because I think they had that in free agency, too. Just wanting to elevate the level of competition, not just on Sundays, but in practices Monday through Saturday as well. And when it comes to evaluating what is more important for the Bears, I think a lot of people think they probably need an edge rusher. They need a defensive tackle. They need a safety. They could take a left tackle.
Jeff King was asked, "How do you assess how things look if you have two players with similar grades? Is that when you start to look at position of need?" And he said that's when they'll look at the board and see where they feel like they have the most holes on the roster. But at 25, this is such a different draft for the Bears, not picking in the top 10. It's really going to have to be the waiting game. or I said if they're interested in Dylan Dylan Theamman, maybe they're in let's trade up and get a safety who can play his entire career here in Chicago. Uh we're not going to do player picks per se, but position picks predictions. So Dan, what's your prediction on the Lions uh position that they go with in the first round?
>> Yeah, it just feels like offensive line.
It just feels like there's enough of those guys there that even though I do think there's going to be a lot of them taken in the first round of this draft, I think there's going to be a tackle there. I don't think it matters if it's a right tackle or a left tackle. If it's a right tackle, they'll move Pane Su over to the left side. If it's a left tackle, they'll move Pane Su, they'll keep him on the right side. Uh, I would say secondarily, you look at edge and beyond that, defensive tackle, safety, where they've got some injury issues, but I it's hard to ignore all these mocks that say offensive draft. There is a reason. It's because they have a need there. But the wild card is you just don't know how Brad Holmes values these guys. And it might not be the same way that the people doing the mocks do.
>> Pierre, we only have time for you just to give us your position.
>> Uh, I'm going with defensive tackle, but like I said a moment ago, your needs now may look different in six months from now. I would still keep an eye on wide receiver for the Vikings. I really would.
>> All right. I'm being boring when it comes to the Bears. I'm going edge.
Lily, there's so many different directions in the second round. I'm not even going to bother asking. We need to take our final timeout. Another iceman has entered the chat. See it for yourself when we come back.
Join Cassie and Tina.
>> Got a really hungry group here.
>> It's the final word for Chicago sports fans.
>> What is the personality of a guy that you want to bring in to the Bears?
>> Chicago Sports Tonight. New episodes week nights at 6. Stream anytime on Fox Local.
>> So, we talked earlier about the Bears Packers rivalry. Caleb Williams, we know, is trying to trademark the Iceman nickname. Well, while Drake is promoting his Iceman album, he's wearing a Packers jacket. Uh, Lily, is Drake trying to send a message to Caleb Williams as well?
Potentially. I'm not sure. I'm like, has he ever come out as a Packers fan? I'm not sure. Or, like you said, it's taken a dick on Caleb Williams. I'm not sure.
I think a Packers fans are kind of conflicted if they want Drake to be a Packers fan or not.
>> They're not going to accept him.
>> H I don't know. I I think there's half and half guys or some fans love it. Some fans are like oh there's a curse with Drake. So I'm not sure but it's at least it's fun to talk about.
>> Yeah. Caleb Williams said about the trademark about the Iceman. He's like I've gotten a kind of a funny reaction about all the people talking about it and he believes that he is going to have to call George Gervin eventually to discuss if he can get the trade back.
Dan Dan, >> there's one Iceman. Okay. There's only one versus everyone. That's done >> guys. Great show. Have a great draft night. We'll make sure to recap everything next week on First of North.
We'll see you then.
