LIVE! Daily News | Federal Warrant Raids in San AngeloAdded:
Hello San Angelo, and welcome to the live daily news show.
>> I'm James Bellini.
>> And I'm Tessa Coskevich.
>> In news, we know why there was a heavy police presence in town this morning.
>> A 16-year-old is missing in San Angelo.
>> And we have two interviews today. The first is with Eric Martinson with the San Angelo Fire Department's Fire Marshal's Office, and the second is with Desiree Johnson with the Small Business Development Center.
>> So, we'll get into that right after this word from Jim Bass.
>> It's time to save big at Jim Bass Nissan with rows of new Nissans priced to sell.
Like this new '25 Nissan Sentra for only 18,9. A new car for only 18,9?
A four-door sedan designed for everyday driving. You better hurry because our lots are full, the savings are real, but these Sentras are going fast. Jim Bass Nissan, Houston Heart and Arden Road, or 24/7 at bassbunch.com.
>> Welcome back. We are James Bellini here with Eric Martinson with the San Angelo Fire Department. Mr. Martinson, how are you doing?
>> I'm doing fine. How are you, sir?
>> I'm doing great. It's time to talk about You have something pretty important to talk about. Let's talk about it.
>> Yes, sir. So, um our office has just started a community risk reduction program.
>> [snorts] >> Um now, what that is is within our mission of fire prevention, we are reevaluating some of the risks in our in our city. So, you know, as time goes by, >> [snorts] >> our population grows, um maybe businesses that weren't in the the city limits before come into city limits. So, we have to our mission doesn't necessarily really change, but what how we conduct ourselves and the projects within that mission change.
So, in order in order to um kind of mitigate the new situations um coming in and maybe realign where our resources are being um used, that's what this is for. Okay? Also, this is a big part a huge part of this is getting partnerships. Not only with uh city departments, with you guys, with media, other media. Like we want to be seen as friends and partners with the citizens of San Angelo. Now, a lot of the citizens in San Angelo, they only see us when we're writing tickets for illegal burns or um or doing code enforcement stuff. We don't want that. We want them to see the other side, why we do that.
We do that for your safety. We want to If you have ideas or if you know of risks within the city limits that we can help with, I would I want them to communicate those with us. So, there's a lot that goes into this plan.
Um first, we're gaining partners, all right? And we're um trying to analyze uh recognize those risks first in uh on the fire safety side. And then we're also trying to uh we're also going to analyze those risks. That's where we're at right now with the with the plan.
>> Okay.
>> After all that is done, then um the mitigation factors get written. How Okay, so we have all these risks within the city limits. We know um that we know what they are. We've analyzed them, how how dangerous, um how often they're going to occur. And then um we are going to write what we are going to do in order to reduce that risk for the citizens of San Angelo.
>> Okay. So, I I know that it's a movie, but in uh Only the Brave, it's about the hotshots, and they look at a big, you know, forest or overgrown area, they say they don't see beauty, they see fuel. Do you see that sometimes when you see buildings that maybe don't have proper >> All day when we drive around. That's what >> Yeah, y'all see fuel.
>> Whether we're going to work or whether we're uh taking our family someplace, uh to a restaurant or to school.
You know, we my out of the corner of my eye I catch a building and I'm like, "Oh, that's you know, dangerous building or something we need to look at further."
And that's going to be part of the plan, too. What are we doing for the dangerous buildings? All right, cuz that leads into, you know, people uh not taking care of their structure, but it also leads to homeless moving into their structure, greater fire risk, and that's where we come in and we're going to make an effort to kind of revise that plan a little bit and see where that goes.
>> I mean, we just had an instance out in Brady where a hotel got struck by lightning.
>> Yes, sir.
>> I mean, it the whole floor on fire. I mean, it looked terrible.
>> Oh, it did. I saw that picture, yeah.
>> So, how do how do people, I guess, get in contact with y'all? How do they report things and >> So, they can call our office at 325-657-4358 and or go on the city of San Angelo website and go to the San Angelo Fire Marshal's office webpage. We're also on Facebook. And a lot of our videos that we have done, fire prevention videos, we're going to come out with a new one soon. So, all of those videos are also on the San Angelo Fire Marshal's Facebook as well. So, we're out there.
I know we're trying to meet a whole lot of other people. Like, we're trying to gain partnerships. So, whatever questions anybody has, they can always contact our office.
Our emails are on that page as well. So, I look forward to hearing from people.
>> Do y'all have a plan on doing like a town hall at a church or something?
>> do.
I'm not exactly sure when or what the location is going to be, but I definitely want to get out there and face-to-face meet everybody and answer questions that they do have.
>> All right.
All right. Well, did we miss anything or >> Nope, that's it.
>> I'm good with that.
>> All right. Well, we [laughter] appreciate you coming in today.
>> All right. Thank you, sir.
>> Yes, sir.
>> I appreciate it.
>> Back to y'all.
Welcome back everyone. James Bleaney here with Desiree Johnson from the Small Business Development Center there at ASU.
>> Thank you. Thank you for having me. I love it this nice fine afternoon. How are you?
>> I'm doing good.
>> Good.
>> We got a couple things to talk about today.
>> Yes.
>> into it.
>> Yes, I have a lot. I'm so excited to share with y'all. For one, thank y'all for being such great partners and helping us share about all the things that we do out of the Small Business Development Center. You know, we're always busy trying to help small business owners and I have two great events that I want to talk about today.
So, I'll talk about the one that probably my business owners are going to find the most helpful, which is funding, right? Cuz it's all about the access to capital. We are hosting on Monday, June 15th, a Meet the Lender Lending Expo event where we're going to have some folks from the Small Business Administration in town. They're going to be talking about great lending programs that they offer through the Small Business Administration. And if you're familiar with the lending process, you know that you have to have a commercial lender to help facilitate that SBA loan.
And so, we are going to also have in the room a lot of our local lenders are going to come out. They're going to have a booth. They're going to be there to talk about their loan programs both on the traditional lending side and if they do SBA lending. And you're going to be able to pitch your business if you're an existing business, this is a great place to be if you're looking for capital for growth, whether that's physical expansion, product expansion, you know, working lines of working capital, whatever that may be.
And then also for our startups who have great aspirations and need funding to get there, you're going to be able to talk about your startup plans, what that cost is going to look like, and make those real connections with lenders. So, it's shopping out those loan programs all under one roof.
>> Oh, there you go.
>> Yeah. I'm very excited. So, that's all day, June 15th at the convention center.
We'll be there Well, it's all day for me. 11:00 for our attendees, 11:00 to 4:00. The afternoon session is going to be the expo where you can go around and visit with the lenders. And then the the morning and lunch is educational and information, getting the info to our small business owners so they can make make great loans and grow their business. So, I'm excited.
>> All right. What else we talking about?
>> Okay. And then the other thing, I will be honest, is probably more fun for me.
I love my lenders. They're fantastic in the world. They make the world go around. But I am so excited to be a part of Texas Business Women. I've come on and talked about it before. It is a group of local women, and our goal is really to empower and educate is really what the heart of it is. And so, we do that through networking, through camaraderie, through all the great things. And we are excited to actually host the statewide conference. So, women from all over the state are going to be coming to our conference. It's going to be the Bloom Conference, June 5th and 6th. The 5th is going to be more for geared towards members. So, if you're a member of Texas Business Women, come out and support that. And if you're not a member, but you're looking for really quality personal and professional development, our conference portion is all day, June 6th. It's a Saturday. It's right around the corner. So, please get on and register if you're interested. But we are going to have some truly top-notch speakers. So, our big keynote speaker is Dr. Julie Du Charm. She's a dynamic leader and best-selling author out of California. She's won entrepreneurship awards in California, and I'm I'm excited cuz she's going to be coming to San Angelo to talk about authentic leadership and how women can truly make a difference and shape the industries that we work in, the communities that we live in, and how we can make an impact.
Um and we're going to She's going to be followed up by Lisa Carol Polliam, who's going to be really talking about uh what is happening with us and how women in professional careers um you may you may you may not realize it, James, but I tell you, us women, we just give and give and give and sometimes we forget to fill our own cup. And it's one thing to know it, it's another thing to practice it. And um you know, ultimately we have to focus on ourselves and make room I I would say make room for ourselves. Um so that way we can continue to be an impact and influence within our communities, within our business organizations.
Um and so I'm very excited about that.
We're going to have three other phenomenal speakers that are going to come in, give us a little bit of technical advice. We're going to talk a little bit about AI cuz I feel like you you just can't not have that, right? We need all the help. I know, we need all the help that we can and if AI can help support me and get my job done a little bit easier, I'm all here for it. So we're going to learn a little bit about how to implement that, as well as some other great speakers to help us strategic planning, and just managing our time and and our energy and our effort and how we can better utilize that to put that forward to the goals that we have, whether that be um you know, in a in an existing position, a leader within, or if you own and operate your own business, or run your own department, whatever it may be. So I'm really excited about that. It's a $125 conference fee, which again, for the quality of speakers that we're bringing in, we got some great sponsors this year, um that are local here to us that are helping support our statewide effort, and that's City National Bank and ServiceMaster by Texas Best, Candela Roofing, San Angelo Federal Credit Union, all these wonderful uh groups that are helping support this effort. So, keeping that registration cost down, full day, meals, conference, entertainment. We're even going to have a banquet with that night. So, if you want to come boogie with us, let me know. I'll put you on the RSVP list, James.
>> [laughter] >> But, uh when do people need to be registered by?
>> People need to register as soon as possible. Go on right now, register today. The conference is June 5th and 6th, so we're just a few just a What is that? What? 10 days? Less than 10 days?
>> around the corner. Yeah, next week.
>> Yeah, next weekend, right around the corner. So, go on, get registered um at tbwconnect.com/conference.
>> And what about the lender expo? Do people need to register for that one?
>> Yes, please. We'd love it if you could RSVP so we can get a great headcount.
This event is open to the public. It's free of charge. Uh so, come out and seek out financing and you can get registered for that also on our website, which is [email protected].
>> All right. Well, Miss Chance, did we cover everything?
>> Yes, thank you so much for having me.
>> Absolutely. Anytime. Anytime.
>> I love it.
>> All right. Back to you.

>> Yeah. And you can go to our There's also you can file a like something that you can click here for more information or you can click here to file a tip or something like that.
>> Yeah, absolutely.
>> on our website.
>> Absolutely. But we will get into the weather after this message from Jay Chandler.
>> It's hard to believe how reckless some people can be and how hard they fight against real victims. You need a partner who consistently beats the giants and who will never ever flinch.
>> Into the weather, we still have a low chance of rain all weekend, but tonight the low drops down to about 67 and the high tomorrow is up around 90Β° before cooling off to 71. And then we also start our rain chances off with about 20%.
