[00:00:04][music] In the shallow tropical seabeds of Indonesia and the Philippines lives the veined octopus, better known as the coconut octopus. Instead of hiding in rocks or [music] coral when danger approaches, it does something remarkable. It searches the seafloor for discarded coconut shell halves, carefully cleans them, and stacks the two pieces together. [music] Then, using just two of its arms as stilts, it walks across the sand while carrying the shells like a backpack. [music] The moment it senses a predator, it instantly assembles the shells into a protective dome and hides inside.

[00:00:39]Scientists [music] call this genuine tool use, one of the very few times it has ever been observed in any invertebrate. [music] This octopus doesn't just react to danger, it plans ahead.
