They Called This African Art “Primitive” | The Story of UliAdded:
Before computers, before modern graphic design, [music] Igbo women were already creating visual languages. It was called Uli, a symbolic art form painted [music] on skin and walls using flowing curves and geometric patterns. Every line had meaning, [music] beauty, identity, spirituality, status. Women wore it during ceremonies and rites of passage.
Their [music] bodies became living art.
Then colonization and missionaries labeled it [music] primitive and the tradition nearly disappeared. But Uli survived. Today, design schools study the same techniques they once dismissed.
