When hauling heavy loads (84,000 lbs) up a 10% grade, truck drivers must maintain appropriate engine RPM (around 1,600), use lower gears, and monitor temperatures to prevent engine and brake overheating; the video demonstrates successful navigation of Big Canyon on Highway 207 between Claude and Silverton, Texas, showing that proper technique and equipment maintenance enable safe passage through challenging terrain.

84,000 lbs vs a 10% Grade: Hopper Bottom on Texas Back Roads追加:
I did what any hack trucker would do. I got my uh my Harbor Freight special uh temperature gun here. Old Dan the man probably don't know nothing about these uh temperature guns. All he knows about beating on some drums, but Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Morning guys. Welcome back to the channel.
Hope we should call this eight driver or eight driver 806 driver or Mr. hack trucking.
But either way, we going to make it work. So, we just checked our ling bing bong tires out and by golly, they're all up to speed.
Only thing I seen I had a problem with is I had two uh two of my chicken lights not wanting to do what they're supposed to do. But I guess I'll have to go back to the chrome shop. Oh shoot. I better not go to a chrome shop either. I'm going to go I'm going go out of business being in the chrome shop.
Buying them leaning long bean bone tires and a chrome shop.
Anyway, we're not going to give old Dan the man that much credit.
probably sitting in his basement eating a bag of Cheetos playing American Truck Simulator thinking he's a truck driver.
So, we don't have a rock bucket on today.
I'm sure you noticed that right off.
And guess what? We do have for some reason the channel's favorite type of haul, the hopper bottle.
aka the welfare wagon. Oh, there's another way to go, bro, too, huh? Pull a hopper bottom. There you go. But, uh, y'all, if y'all remember back last time we did pull this hopper bottom on the video a few months ago, uh, that's when we had all the trouble with the the, uh, tarp.
So, you know, uh, I guess I had to had up, too, when the tarp motor went out.
when it was 20 years old, but uh should have caught that before I rode the tarp.
But anyway, we got a whole new tarp system on the trailer now.
Thanks to the boss man.
So, we're headed down or up actually to Border, Texas, where y'all been a 100 times with me in previous videos. We're going to grab us a load of URA and we're going to truck her on down to Sllayton, Texas. Down there to the big nutrient store and kick her off. Going to be easy day today.
Only thing is we're not going to take our normal usual route from Border down to Sllayton because today is day number three of the Commercial Ve Vehicle Safety Alliance FMCSA 2026 Blitz week.
And I'm not sure they will probably like set up somewhere out there where we we normally run down. So, we're going to take a route that's about 28 mi further, but we're going to miss all that mess and we're going to stay in the country.
Not saying that they won't sneak out there to us, but it might be the better option.
Supposed to be hot today. It's been another 100 degree day. We've had two in a row already. Today's going to be number three. I think tomorrow is going to be tomorrow, Friday, the uh May 15th is supposed to be the hottest day of the week. We'll be doing this again tomorrow, too. Our our rock calling has hit a snag for a few days until uh they can get some more pads cleared off for us to put some Bronco on. And fortunately for us, we actually had a few loads of fertilizer calling in. So I'll be able to piece in a couple of these in the meantime.
And life going to take forever.
We're going to get on US 287 here and we're going to boogie on up the border. It's about 98 miles.
Let's just round it up and call it a even 100 miles of the border. And I'll let y'all catch the sunrise on the time lapse.
Heat up here.
Heat. Heat.
Order, Texas.
It's about Uncle Adam.
I think he's only got I think we only got one truck between us. It's way tall.
Maybe two trucks between us.
There we go. We got one brand new Prestige trailer with the augur out today.
Hardly a service.
All right, let's get in here. Let's get our tarp rolled and get ready to get in.
Man, those high-pressure transport trucks are nice.
One touch here. The old one, we just have to hold it.
This one right here does it all for you.
There's a chicken lap. It's out.
Another high-pressure transporter. 589.
Heat.
Heat.
bleeding some stuff off over there. Come on. There we got one line out of our way. Wait on our line to go. We'll probably be here. Man, they load pretty quick. Those of y'all been on the channel for a long time kind of know what's up here, how this works. It's pretty much in and out. Takes maybe 10 minutes per truck to load. So, we had uh five in this right lane here and there's three in front of me. So, it's eight trucks. It'll probably be a little over an hour we'll be here. And um like I said, when we get out of here, we're not going to take our usual route due to the blitz week. Uh, I'm trying to decide if I want to go back down to Clarendon, catch the back roads up to Cap Rock, or we could shoot right back down to Claw, Texas, and go across the Big Canyon. Now, some of y'all may not know it, but there is the I guess you would say kind of the southern southeast end of the Palader Canyon. You can go across it on Highway 207 out here and it is a 10% grade on both sides. It is a pool, especially going south. It's It's a shorter pool going up the south side of the canyon, but it is steeper. It's a steeper for longer. The other side coming up the north side is a longer pull. It kind of you kind of pull up for a while, then you level out, then you pull up for a while, and you level out.
It's a lot easier coming coming from the south back to the north. But going from the north back to the south, it is pretty much straight up and got some curves in it. But um we might just ease across there today just to uh it'll save us about 30 mi to go across there. Put it that way. We're not in no hurry or anything. And we won't have no problem going up the hill. Just take our time and get up it. It's still going to be early enough. It's going to be cool. We can get up it no problem. But uh we might go that way just that way y'all can uh I can show y'all a little bit of video of the canyon to kind of add to the day to the rest of the boring uh hopper bottom action. I guess that was the first truck. He's already loaded and coming out. So let's get through this line and get back here. I'll get with y'all when we get back here to the back and get get ready to load.
All right. Uncle Adam's coming out.
We're coming in.
He's trying to Oh, he's over there rolling to start.
I'll leave the camera rolling. Y'all watch him pull up toward the scales there. I think I think we'll be far enough up on the scales to be able to see.
I like I get out here and check in with the scale person.
All right, that took a minute.
It has to update my overweight permit.
Been a while since I've been up here.
Shoot. It's probably been I bet since back in the fall anyway.
Back when last time I pulled the hopper all this new red slate we were picking up in Enid, Oklahoma cuz this place was down.
Uncle Adam got out of here. He's got to go to shop.
I put a his AC clutch was acting up yesterday.
So, I put a new clutch on it and then uh this car is squealing. So, I think the compressor was bad. So, he's running Amarillo, which is only about 30 minutes away from here to grab a compressor to get a compressor put on and then he's going to meet us down that way.
We'll go under these two conveyor belts load down here by the tracks.
There should only be one or two trucks down here right now cuz I think there's two behind me. Go, Uncle Adams. There should be one loading and one waiting.
>> Wakey wakey and go get loaded.
>> Wakey wakey. Hands off. Snaky.
You like that? Wakey wakey. Hands off.
Snaky. Hey, that arrow is pointing the wrong way. Did y'all see that?
You used to be able to get out of your truck back here. They got them signs, do not get out of truck. Do not get out of truck. Well, some old boy had a heart attack back there and he rolled down. They put all these guard rails up.
Now, used to not be no guardrails here, anything. And he his truck went off right in here somewhere into the I don't think there was a train here at the time, but went off uh down there in through the tracks.
After that, they quit letting us get out of the truck back here in the back.
They're loading that tinder truck.
That's a really nice truck.
It looks like they about got him loaded working on the back half of him. So, we'll wait on this filler in front of us, then we'll roll in there and get her done.
All right. So, as soon as this guy's done loading his back hopper here, we going to pull in there. There's a light on the back left side there. We got to watch. It'll tell you it's got a red light for stop, green light to go, and a reverse light to back up, which is amber in color. Here we go.
We're getting close to where they'll stop us to load the front hopper here.
Right there.
Watch that sign right there.
Heat. Heat.
That's right.
off guard there.
All right. So, now they'll refill our hopper up top and then they'll get ready to do our our back hopper.
And here here we'll back up. They'll start filling it on the back slope and then as it starts filling up, we'll have to back up just a little bit. We'll get the reverse sign and then they'll tell us to pull forward when we're done and we'll pull out and go to the scales. It is 8:07.
We actually got out of here a little quicker than what I thought.
Man, now loads are back.
They're getting her done today.
Watch your sign here. Say reverse.
Slide on up here.
Heat.
Heat.
We'll roll our tarp after we come off the scales.
GoPro shutting off or the DJI Action 4 is shutting off.
Sure. We'd like to have that DJI Action 6.
Can't get them here in the United States no more, though. Nothing. DJ uh messing up our uh good camera equipment.
Heat.
Heat.
Oh, heat, heat.
All right, we're scaled out. Got our paperwork.
I got about 30 miles to decide if we're going to go across the big canyon or go around it.
Let's see what's happening. let y'all know when we get the clog Texas. That's where we either got to make a left or go straight.
All right, here we go, guys. We're about to drop off to Palader Canyon, Highway 207, 10% grade.
Got our buddy Josh F up here.
got his crusher set up, rock crusher set up.
But I will probably timelapse y'all across the most part of this. And then when we go get to the south rim of the canyon there and make our ascent, start climbing, we will uh we'll get back with you and uh we'll go up that 10% 10% grade together.
Anyway, here we go.
All right, guys. We're about to make our climb. And there's usually no traffic down here early. I got three pickups behind me. We're fixing to go up, up, up.
Got passing lane up here. Notice they ain't going to come around.
We're just going to take our time. We're not going to kill it.
All right, here we go. 10% said we're not going to kill her. We got an engine on.
Get the RPM up.
Get the py roll down.
Heat. Heat.
We are 84,000 lb, y'all.
Leave it right there.
He must not have no weight.
Heat up here.
round here. We have to get the low side.
Still sitting on 199° 850 on the power.
820 on the power. She coming down. She going up just fine right there.
We're almost to the top.
running about 1,600 RPMs right there where she'll go.
792 on the power, 195 on temps are coming down.
Trying to keep it right there about 1600 RPM.
Lightning insurers left. That means we're getting to the top.
Show y'all this right quick in case you don't believe me. On the 10% on the 10% gray part up here on top. Now I'm going to pull over. Let everything kind of cool down a little bit.
Temperatures are good. I need to let them let them rear ends probably need to cool down a little bit.
I think that sign right there has to a heck. Now that sign don't have the 10% grade on it.
10%.
Told you I find a sign. I had to pull off on the shoulder up here to find it.
Excuse the wind.
Our March and April winds are still here in the middle of May. So luckily it was still about 80° coming up.
80° coming up the hill. So, our temperatures were good.
Um, we made her up no problem. There's one more little pull on down here, but it's a quick one. It's a quick kind of a down and up by Lake McKenzie.
Then after that, it's smooth sailing all the way down to Slate.
Big Country Texas panhandle state highway 207 between Clawude and Silverton, Texas.
Let's get back on the road. Oh, I'll show you what I found back there at that first spot I pulled off at thinking that's where the 10% sign was.
Found me two really good 4x4 dunage that some people left in there. The heavy wood.
So, put one right here.
Got it. Got it bungeeed on. I got another one up here in the neck underneath. Take those home. Work good for some blocks in the shop.
Look like everything's cooled down good.
Well, let's get rolling.
All right, we're coming up on our next little cut across here. This ain't do bad right here at Lake McKenzie. Beautiful lake.
If you ever get a chance to come out here and wander around, this is a really nice lake.
Of course, the levels are down. That's every lake in our part of the world is, but see the dam is right there in front of us.
It is a pretty lake. Clear. Got a lot of clear water in it. A lot of rock.
Got this uh little view coming through on the back side of the dam here. Heat.
Heat.
Heat up here.
on this one. We only drop down till to till 10th gear.
down.
This one off the desk.
Pyro shooting up on this one. Got to about 950. Coming back down now, though.
Back on top.
That's it for the I would say hill climbing, but they're not hills. They're canyons. We're dropping off into the earth coming back out instead of going up over now. Let's get on down the slate and get this higheed truck feed kicked off.
Jacob forgot to turn on the camera pulling in here. We got checked in there at the office. Turned in the paperwork.
Pull up here to the barn and kick her off.
Heat. Heat.
Pretty close right there.
All right. Not close enough. We got to pull up some more.
Cover out the way here about go over the length of the box there.
always look on the ground about the length of the box is what we need. So having a good mark pretty close when you pull up a little more Open this back door up.
There we go.
I sure would. Like I said in the last video we did here, like to have one of these Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
We need to pull up about about a box swing still.
Try it.
Oh yeah, that'll work.
That'll work.
Get her in that sweet spot. Now let's go make sure everything's running in the barn good.
All right. So, it's doing what it's supposed to do. We're going to get unloaded here. We're going to We got another load put on us. So, we're going to leave here. We're going to go south back down to Plane View or north, excuse me, back to Plane View. get a load of sulfate and take it back down to Clarington by the house. So, going to work out good for us today. We're going to have a good day. And I think we got to do the same thing again tomorrow.
Adjust our door a little bit. It's kind of building up there slightly.
There we go.
Do some paperwork. Let her unload.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Pull up.
clean up our little mess. Uncle Adam will be here about an hour and a half or so, probably.
We'll leave that little loader out and he can put it up when he gets done.
There goes our tarp rolling up.
All right, let's go clean up our mess and get the plane view.
Got us a couple of hot and spicy big chickens and small fry for the ride down the plane. About an hour drive down there up there. All right, we're going north.
Keep keep saying down there.
Yeah, this Well, one thing about this McDonald's little truck parking spot here in Sllayton, it's got some craters in the in the damn parking lot. You got to pay attention what you're doing and kind of put your van through your radiator, engine through your radiator.
So, we were going to go into love and pick up the Uncle Adam's uh ConX 3300 he hadn't repaired, but we don't have time now that we got to go get this load. So, we're going to have to wait until another day. He's going to be disappointed about that. I think he's about tired of that little Cobra.
Actually, that little Cobra he got does talk good, but he's ready to have his big radio back.
Ready to have his big radio back.
Maybe we'll have some time to do it tomorrow, one of these rounds.
Let's get rolling. Or I am rolling.
Let's get on up there.
Plain View, Texas.
2:07 p.m. Run in here and get my paperwork. Then we'll go get on the scales. Go back there and load. Don't look like there's any hoppers here loading. So hopefully you get in and out.
We're pulling on the scales here.
We'll do the second part of the check in and we're going to put it over here and get her loaded.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Hold on.
Heat.
Heat.
Starting to cloud up a little bit.
Motor man's back.
About got us loaded.
About got her. It is 2:49 p.m. Man, we did good.
Get up here on these scales and see what we got.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat up Got her dead.
3:00. So, we should get there about 4:45, just in time for Jeff to unload us.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
So these last 15 months. miles or so have been a mess.
They're putting this dang gravel down on the road. Luckily, it's on my side. I mean, it's kind of squirly cuz it's fresh.
It's fresh, but man, I know all the cars I've been beating, I've been throwing rocks at them all over the place.
That's not good.
We're about We're probably about 5 miles four or five miles outside of town getting some rain.
Back to our kind of northwest there.
Just put us under a thunderstorm watch.
I didn't realize we're going to have any of this coming up today.
This crap right here is a mess.
This fresh gravel. It It is squirly.
Got some cars behind me, so they're going to be eating my rocks.
Not a good situation.
Heat. Heat.
Now we got rocks. It's on the other side of the road.
Hope we don't meet nobody.
trying to head back from that pickup.
He's got a flat bed on there and he don't have no butt flats.
Know he's going to be jumping stuff.
All right, let's get over here. We got about 5 miles to go, y'all.
Man, I was getting rocks and everything.
Stuff threw at me left and right coming in right there. I think I might have got some bibbies on my windshield.
I'm not sure.
And this Dane 287 is a pain in the butt to get going on.
We're about to pull in here to new trim.
here and see what there's old Jeff. He's waiting on us.
Let go. Let go.
Got to watch old Jeff Yeah. He gets after been sitting out here about 5 minutes.
He's already got half of the load put up.
Starting to get a little more cloudy.
might get us some rain.
Big old spreader rig.
Tires on here as tall as I am.
It's real good getting dark back in there.
All right. So, put my camera under the landing gear. Let y'all watch when we get ready to unload the front hopper.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
I missed the lightning, but you might hear the thunder.
And that's a little shower.
Sure did make it humid. Back to the west. There's quite a bit darker. We're about to get it again. So, all right. So, while we were unloading while ago, I didn't record or talk about why we were there. So, I want to check it out, but uh this uh brake on this drive was really hot. It was I could smell it. And um so, you know, I did I did what any hack trucker would do. I got my uh my Harbor Freight special uh temperature gun here. Old Dan the man probably don't know nothing about these uh temperature guns. All he knows about beating on some drums. But uh only temperature gun he knows about probably is the one you put in your mouth check if you got a code when you're about 12 years old cuz that's how you act when you leave comments like that on my page.
But uh we're going to do what any hack would do and we're going to replace that S camou oursel and we're not going to rely on anybody else to do it for us. So we're going to do what the hack does best and fix our that we're out here driving on a daily basis doing the hard work, the off-road work, the back road work, the country work. not that uh pilot to flying Jay. See how many roller dogs we can eat in a day work. So uh so I'm gonna leave that at that D man. And if you care to comment on that, I'd love to see it cuz I'm going to blast you out everywhere I can.
Also, thanks for the engagement. Really helps the channel. So that's enough of that. I'm done with that. We're going to fix our slack adjuster so we can be ready to roll tomorrow. And with that being said, y'all appreciate y'all riding along with us up that big old 10% grade that I bet a lot of y'all didn't even realize we had here in the Texas panhandle. But if you did know about it and if you've ever experienced it, drop down in the comments and let me know about your experience on that said 10% grade which is on state highway 207 between Silverton, Texas and uh Claw, Texas running north and south. So let me know about your experience if you might.
And we're going to call it a day. We got more hopper work to do tomorrow. We're going to try to knock it back. Knock it out and we're going to be back in the dirt on uh on Monday hopefully all in some rock. So, appreciate y'all tuning in. Get your shiny side up and hammer down. We'll see y'all on the next.
