Methane pyrolysis is an emerging hydrogen production technology that offers significant advantages over traditional steam methane reforming and water electrolysis: it produces hydrogen with only 10-14 kg of CO2 per kg of hydrogen (compared to 16 kg for electrolysis using grid electricity), while consuming only 16% of the energy required for water electrolysis, making it a more energy-efficient and environmentally favorable alternative for hydrogen production.

Creating hydrogen from methane #science #energy #innovation #chemistry本站添加:
From nothing, to make a hydrogen, the industry approach is a steam methane reforming.
In this reaction, the methane of our natural gas react with water, and then they produce hydrogen.
They co-produce carbon dioxide. And the the advantage of this process is they produce cheaper hydrogen. But the disadvantage is they co-produce large amount of carbon dioxide. You base on the reaction equilibrium and the uh also reaction equation, they co-produce 10 to 14 kg [clears throat] of carbon dioxide per kilogram of hydrogen.
That's a lot if those are hydrogen in million pounds level. And the another uh new technology, like a green hydrogen, you know, for water electrolysis, they also called water splitting. They using electricity to split water to make a hydrogen. Well, this reaction, they do not produce any CO2 when they using renewable electricity. But the when they using electricity electricity from the power plant, actually, they produce 16 kg of CO2 per kilogram of hydrogen. The second advantage of methane pyrolysis is methane pyrolysis has a lower and higher energy efficiency. Using water electrolysis as example, to make a similar amount of hydrogen from water and from methane, the methane one only 16% of energy consumption of water electrolysis. So, that means this technology is very interesting and have a greater potential to be used as an alternative approach for hydrogen production. Well, it's clear that methane pyrolysis is a great alternative, and there's a lot of potential to this process.
