The Federal Kumano is a Handysize Laker vessel built in 2003 at Ishikawajima Shipbuilding Yard in Sakai, Japan, specifically engineered to navigate the Great Lakes while maintaining ocean-going capabilities. The vessel measures 199.99 meters (656 feet) in length, just 1 centimeter short of the 200-meter mark, with a beam of 23.76 meters (78 feet) and a deadweight capacity of 36,489 tons. Unlike Seaway Max vessels (225 meters), Handysize Lakers are designed to bridge the gap between ocean sailing and the tight constraints of the Great Lakes, including narrow channels and locks. The vessel is equipped with Ice Class 1C certification, featuring a reinforced hull capable of pushing through winter ice, and contains 6 individual cargo holds. During its passage through Port Colborne, the vessel was observed adjusting its draft by pumping out ballast water to safely pass under the Clarence Street Bridge (Bridge 21), demonstrating the operational requirements for navigating the Great Lakes' infrastructure.

FEDERAL KUMANO ARRIVES WITH A BANG: livestream highlightsAjouté :
With milk, please.
Milk and sugar.
One sugar, one milk.
Oh, what a man.
Oh, speaking of someone buy me a coffee.
A big thank you. I don't know if you're in the group right now or you might watch it later, but ATC I'm not going to say his real name, but ATC who was on the last live stream gifted me a coffee. Actually gifted me more than a coffee. Coffee and a little snack to say thank you for the video.
So, that was most appreciated. I can't thank you enough for that. And I still might take you up on your offer and come and hang out with you if I make it down to Cleveland during the summer. I do have a few weeks off end of July into August and I was originally thinking of going up Who's calling now? I was originally thinking of going up to um Sault Ste. Marie, but with the gas prices right now Yeah. The Sault Ste. I was going to go Sault Ste. Marie, but with gas prices right now uh $2 a liter, $4.50 a gallon, forget that. So, uh Cleveland's only like a 3-hour drive from here, so I might I might take him up on that offer.
Go and refresh.
And also uh 2 weeks time from now I am scheduled to be in Sarnia >> [snorts] >> uh by the uh the not the Ambassador Bridge, the blue blue or I can never remember what it's called now. You know, the bridge that goes over um from Sarnia there into the US. Blue Water Bridge. The Blue Water Bridge. I'm going to I'm going to do a live stream from that area in a couple of weeks time cuz I'm down there for 2 and 1/2 days and doing a big Sea-Doo ride.
There's about 20 of us going down there Sea-Doo riding uh the St. Clair River and the St. Clair itself, Lake St. Clair. And I'm going to be spending an afternoon and a bit more time doing ship watching and doing some filming as well. So, I make it a fun-filled weekend for myself. And that's in 2 weeks' time. Long as we don't have 100 km/h winds, I'll go.
Oh, this boat stinks.
Oh, feel fishy.
Oh, the myth, the legend, the man, the coffee man. Look at this.
Oh, thanks very much.
All right, look at that.
So, Kamano has just called in at the piers.
So, 4 or 5 minutes, uh we will see Federal Kamano Oops. Appear from over there.
Alarm for lift bridge just gone off.
Is that calm before the storm again?
Just dropped.
And I still don't see the vessel. Oh, yes, I do.
I think I can through the trees.
Yeah, you won't see here. I can just work it out between the trees there. All right.
Now, if you just joined us, we was down right down by the bridge for the last vessel for the Strongfield.
And we was literally 20 ft away from the bridge when it went up. And you really get to hear it struggle to go up, then kick into gear, then goes up pretty quick. Kind of cool.
So, I'll do after this live stream, I'll save these two live streams Sorry, this live stream.
Then I'll repost it, edited it after it's edited to make it like a 15-minute video of that.
Of each one.
Uh that building looks new. Yeah, it is.
It's um it's a new condo.
Wait for the bridge. This is a new condo.
Uh it's completed about 18 months ago, 2 years ago.
And the Pie Guys opened here about 2 years ago now in there.
And uh yeah, there's I mean there's a couple still available. It's pretty expensive, mind you.
Uh but what a great view you have. Okay, there we go. There's Kamalo just coming in.
Just see the crane in the distance.
We'll get a nice shot of this cuz it's going to come right by us.
Lift bridge struggling to go up as always.
Watching from Newport in the UK. Hey, Newport, Wales.
Love your videos. Always interesting and informative.
I'm glad to hear that. Thanks.
Actually, speaking about informative, I was down here yesterday and I met this gentleman and this old gentleman popped up to me.
Asked if I knew my if I was Nigel and he he told me to say uh no. He met a couple of people who were visiting here.
Um It- she Oh, what's it? Ithaca, that was it. Ithaca, New York. Ithaca, New York. They're visiting from Ithaca, New York and they came here because they see my videos of Port Coquitlam. They want to come and check it out. Also, but they have cruised on Viking cruises before in the uh Antar- uh South Antar- Antarctic on a cruise down there.
Uh so, I thought that was really cool.
So, they wanted to come and check out the area um based on the videos. And that's now not the first time I've heard that. I've heard people uh been checking out Crystal Beach due to a couple of the videos I've posted down there.
So, hey, if I can uh spread the uh the joy and get people to come and visit these places, it's great.
Even not, just stay at home, put your feet up, and watch the telly.
And I'll bring it to your TV.
It's all kicking off in the UK though, isn't it? All that uh all those marches today and all the crap with the government.
We'll we'll keep politics aside, but I just just acknowledging it.
I still have a right to vote over there.
But, the place is just weird at the moment.
All right. It's coming at a good pace.
I'll grab my coffee as I wait for it to pick up.
Once Once again, we're just keeping an eye on the clouds, the skyline, the thunderstorms.
Could be around as we await this vessel.
Just while I wait for it to get closer, just let you know, if you're new to the channel, just checking it out for the first time, I try and post a couple of videos a week.
And this year, started just 2 weeks ago, we're going to try and do a live feed every weekend, but we just never know which day it is due to traffic. Yesterday was very quiet. Today is a little bit better.
And hopefully tomorrow be down here filming on the water for the first time this year.
Oh my gosh.
>> [screaming] >> I think I can hear a rumble of thunder.
That's either a rumble of thunder or that is the sound coming from the ship. It's only more thunder than that.
Don't worry about that.
All right, the Federal Oh.
Thunder.
Ooh, I don't know if the mic picked that up.
But thunder above us.
So built in 2003, at the highly respected Ishima Shipbuilding Yard.
I can't pronounce what that word's meant to be.
Sakai, Japan.
So, these vessels were specifically engineered to bridge the gap between the ocean sailing and the tight constraints of the Great Lakes.
So, she's not a Seaway max. She's short to the Seaway max. I believe she's 199 m.
Whereas the Seaway max is 225.
So, the Class C's is handy size Lakers.
Oh, thunder's rumbling.
We may get rain. I think that's rain to the right of me, actually. Coming in pretty quick. So, see how I can figure out here. Maybe a strike of lightning as long as it don't hit me.
So, this vessel measures in at 100 My god, it's 1 cm short of 200 m. 199.99 m, 656 ft. It's just started raining.
Um What was that in What's What's the average beam?
Uh beam of Oop, I'm going to have to take cover somewhere cuz it's pissing it down.
Well, that didn't work out very good, did it? I got to find something to just cover myself up in.
>> [laughter] >> I you know what? I might be all right briefly.
And the rain's pouring down.
As I hold a metal frame case for my phone.
All right.
I think there's some dry patch over here.
All right, found a little dry bit.
Ooh.
Oh, there we go. It's dry here.
Oh my god, I can't get any enough.
Oh my god, it is pouring it down.
We're under this little awning just here.
>> [laughter] >> But you can still see it.
And there is an umbrella in my car.
But I thought I might have a few more minutes.
Literally, I just saw the rain appear as I looked to the right.
Cuz to the left of me and to the right of me and around me was nothing, but it was just behind that building.
>> So that water they're pumping out, I'm guessing that's to do with ballast.
Cuz a lot of water being pushed out right now.
So I guess they're adjusting the Yeah, it'll be ballast cuz they're adjusting themselves to be the right depth.
Um draft to get into the lock. Remember last week we had the problem with the other federal vessel uh Caribou which was uh over draft.
And I can't see the markings on this one yet. Eight eight one and a bit.
So they're definitely lightening themselves. Get themselves a bit lighter.
As we stand here in the rain and the thunderstorm.
Looking like idiots. That's pretty cool all the water coming out.
I think he might have found a spot over there with a puff of smoke.
Let's go and move over here so I can get closer without getting drenched.
Oh yeah.
Wally's found a an awning.
Get another shot of that.
Just about drying it.
I guess he's adjusting the draft.
Well, that water coming out.
Slowly edging away under the Clarence Street Bridge, Bridge 21.
Sadly, it rained and I can't run up there.
That's all right. You're good. Thanks.
Yes.
First one I've heard in a while. Well done.
Uh Nigel Newport uh Ali is in Buckinghamshire. Oh, you're in Newport. I thought you're in Wales, mate. I was in Newport, Wales. You're in Newport, Buckinghamshire. My apologies.
The birthplace of Aston Martin. There you go. There's a fact for everyone.
Newport, Buckinghamshire.
Uh for what Oh, here comes the rain even heavier now. Jeez. So, what I know of about the Federal Caribou, it was there for about 24 to 30 hours.
Um and I believe it was had some cargo removed.
And then it was allowed to go through, but it what it was delays 24 to 30 hours. That's all I know.
Um look at that. It's like disappearing in the rain there.
All we needed was a strike of lightning on it.
Oh.
Yep.
Crack.
Jeez.
I have a feeling I shouldn't be holding electrical equipment out here.
>> [laughter] >> Did you hear that crack of thunder or did the mic pick it up?
That was loud.
All right, everyone. That is it from outside the pipe guys here in Port Colborne.
Um I'm going to go go and dry off, put my equipment away before I get hit by lightning, and uh do some editing when I get home. So, more videos coming out very shortly. Make sure you check them all out. Make sure you like and subscribe. And thanks once again for watching, and I'll see you all very very soon. Take care.
We certainly had it heavy here. Yeah.
