During shad spawn, when traditional baits like swim jigs, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits aren't working, anglers should try sleeper baits such as popping frogs for vegetation areas, jerkbaits for deeper rock banks, hybrid bladed swimbaits for grassy waters, and square bill crankbaits for rip rap banks; these unconventional lures can trigger bass to bite when fish are actively feeding on spawning shad, with effectiveness varying based on water clarity, cover type, and depth.

I ain't never watched it. Anytime Anytime sports get to playoff.
>> He's just a spoiled kid.
Hockey, the Stanley Cup playoffs is the best sports playoffs out of any sports.
No. Yeah, I can't even I can't even comment cuz I don't watch.

In in in professional Dude, college football is better. I'm not Professional That's how you kicking it off. The NFL kicking it off. No, no, let me just I JUST HAVE BASEBALL WAS FREAKING PHENOMENAL. Don't break See? You started that. I messed [snorts] up.
>> Listen, he started You need to go jump in that creek, seriously.
We're counting down the days for that.
Hey, look.
I'm going to spray my ankle if I can Herping and fishing from the creek. Bro, you can literally get all that done.
We're titling it herping and fishing.
Herping.
Herping, fishing, and herping.
Man, y'all y'all wild.
Hey, look. Before we get this kicked off, you know we got to give it up.
We just left Red Chris. Oh, give it up to my dude.

They say, "Mr. 300."
>> [laughter] >> Let me Let me hold five. Hey, look, man. I ain't got it. Technically, you owe me a buck. Can you help your boy out, bro? I need a couple of dollars.
You got me? Always got you, bro. My boy.
Appreciate y'all. Hey, look. We We got a good one for y'all today, man. Uh I try to keep the rate debates We try to keep them timing your specific baits that are going to help you all, the viewer, right now. So, y'all can take this information, hit the lake tomorrow, whatever, in our region, the Southeast, and hopefully catch y'all some bass. So, the the the topic for today, the baits for today, y'all waiting for this.
We talking about the shash ball. It's a big deal. So, set your alarm clocks early.
>> Shash ball for You heard me.
>> [laughter] >> You need to get up early in the morning.
I'm kind of a big deal. So, look. This is how we going to do this, man. We've been throwing some ideas around.
You guys are probably familiar with the the everyday I'm going to go through the list. Y'all all give us a very common everyday popular bait that we all throw during the shad spawn. Everybody has these baits, but that's not what we talking about. But throw it just throw me one. A very common popular >> swim jig is probably one of the most iconic I would say iconic shad spawn baits. White white swim jig. Yeah. I'm going to say I'm going to say a white spinnerbait. Spinnerbait's another big one. Give me a lipless crankbait. Give me another one. Very common just popular Damn, those are like the three Those are the three Those are the three top. But but even like a white buzzbait. Yep.
Yep. You know, something like that.
Everybody knows though.
>> Those are pretty standard. Standard. So, we going to put a spin on it and we're going to talk about baits that are kind of sleepers or hey, I like when people title their videos the pros don't tell you.
>> [laughter] >> These are the baits the pros won't tell you. Hey, we low-key we might title ours like this. Hey, I laugh when I see them videos.
We say these are the ones that we have in our box. Oh, yeah. That that when things the traditional baits are not working these are the probably the ones that are we have in our box that we're pulling out. 100%. And they might not be ones that you guys know about. So You guys might not know is what we wanted to change we change it up. Change it up a little bit. Throw them a little curveball, yo. So, look Jacob, I want you to really quick I feel like I feel like Jacob is ate up with the shad spawn. Oh, he's the one that won more money than anybody. For real though. Not the most guy. He's won more than anybody period anyway, but when it come to shad spawn, I put that like you in topwater and you in shad spawn, I'm putting you way up there.
That's like your jam. I love it. So, so give the folks a little nugget or a little backstory or a little insight as to why the shad spawn is such a big deal and just that whole Because there's areas in the country that it doesn't happen. Dude, I Listen to me. I grew up on one. Me too. We don't have It doesn't happen. It does happen in the Midwest.
It does. Uh the South, obviously Texas, all the way through Georgia, North Carolina, up the coast a little bit. It does happen. It just happens in There's even like in the probably there's gizzard shad spawn around my house that happens to coincide a lot of times with bass spawn. So, the bass aren't on them as much, but if it ha- you know, and they'll spawn earlier in the day or later in the day. So, it's all different. Mhm. But it But it does still the majority of the shad spawn does There is some sort of shad like bait fish spawn in that place. Even up north there's alewives Alewife spawn, yeah.
There's still ciscoes ciscoes up in the Mille Lacs. It It There's always something. If you understand it and tap into it, it's the most magical bite for a period of time. Short period.
>> It ain't short, but it is so dang good.
100%.
So, anyway, so that all being said, >> Yeah.
I'll give you guys a little bit of the rundown.
Shad spawn overall what I've learned over the years happens at night. So, typically your water temperature needs to be mid 60s to low 70s is sort of the range it really kicks off. Typically around a full moon helps.
Um It doesn't have to necessarily stop start there. Shad spawn just like the bass spawn. Think about it this way.
Bass in the creeks, they spawn first.
Shad spawn in the main lake later in the year. It's all the same thing.
Everything from bluegill spawn do the same thing. Water warms up first in the back of the creek, shad spawn first in the back of the creek. And there's a wave of shad that spawn on the main lake and there's shad It's the same sort of thing. Mhm.
So, overall, um one of the most unbelievable bites you'll ever be on.
First thing and a [ __ ] of you said you got to be up early and there's even places on like clear water lakes out there that guys are fishing the shots for at night. Mhm. So like on super clear water fisheries.
10 foot of visibility the shots by me here I'm spawning on the rock walls and rock places and everything and they'll be freaking bass and wall lines.
Yeah, they get some wall line wake baits at night. Oh yeah.
>> On a shots phone. Yeah. Like so unbelievable. So not just you can have some unbelievable night fishing nights.
This time of year as well. So don't sleep on that is that is definitely one I mean you can just go throw on top of blue blue blue.
A night time. Yep, you'll hear them.
Mhm. When it's calm. So all that being said white is a great bait or a great way to catch fish. Obviously typically coincides with the bell out of bass are done spawning. They're post spawn.
They're wanting to feed up. They need that that that they need those fish.
They need The fish fish they need.
>> [laughter] >> Hey, shout out to my official.
Hey, they need that bait. Hey, they need that bait. Hey, you need to do a little voice over. Hey, you need this fish.
Hey, >> [laughter] >> you need it.
Can I jump in?
Hey, if you need a boat you going to have to take a six minute penalty which you need this fish.
You need this fish. So.
I can't tell you what to do but you need this fish. I know it but I ain't So they need to survive. So that's God's way of saying hey bass. Hey, you need these shots.
>> these shots. That's their way of recouping. And low key you ain't got to travel no more really far. Always always thought that was really cool how the shots spawn very shallow where the bass just left spawn and they don't even got to travel or transition. It's just right there start eating. Yeah. Hey, mother nature is a trip.
>> It's unbelievable.
>> It is so all that being said makes it for some of the best fishing in a very small window. Well, that's high being gets it or what BJ calls the high-beam.
Yeah.
It's over with. It's rap city. There ain't no shad. There ain't no shad flickering. They're done. It is the most on-off switch in bass fishing you have ever seen in your entire life. It can happen from you caught 50 bass in the last hour to not getting a bite the rest of the day doing the exact same pattern in the exact same scenario, but you go back the next morning at 7:00 or 6:56:22 to 7:14 and you blitzing the exact same light.
>> Now, I wouldn't say the next morning because we all know that the shad's phone is kind of mythical. Facts.
It could be that, too. Man, that that thing moody is a >> [laughter] >> It is moody. It is moody. She can't be, bro. She can't be. Very very temperature temperature related.
>> If a few more clouds are in the sky, you roll up, it's dead sea. You're like, Mhm. What y'all doing? Mhm. And don't And don't let it rain. Oh, yeah. I've I've gotten screwed on shad fishing.
Lightning lightning and thunder A hard rain typically what happens is it cools that water surface temperature down. Yeah. And it's over. So, you get a hard rain at night, it don't matter how good your shad fishing >> But you would think the bass would still be sitting there waiting on them. No.
And they ain't going to bite you crap.
And not ain't there.
No. Mother nature brush you a trip. And that includes the weather, too. It's over with. When it gets a little cooler, the I just I think the light the booming of the thunder and lightning, too, I feel like does something to them. Drives them away.
>> Oh, it definitely does cuz I had that tournament that I almost um we got we got we got one in the round. Where we played it at? It's Smith Lake.
>> Oh, yeah. I remember that. It rained on that. It rained that morning. I got >> Yeah. You got You got dengue? Crap. I'd be itching like a mofo. Yeah, my man dengue.
>> [laughter] >> Now, I'm going to tell you why. Cuz they I'm we're staying in these Airbnbs and they ain't got no head and shoulders.
They got me some janky and raggedy uh What do they call that?
>> shampoo? Man, I need some good shampoo, some anti-dandruff. They got water in it.
>> golden water? Smells like some blue.
Hey, how much money did you win this year so far, bro? [laughter] I need to go buy some.
Hey, listen. Hey, he's got to provide you some. Hey, let me tell you something that was crazy about all of us. It don't matter how much money any of us that made >> cheapest can be?
>> Hey, everybody would have made over a million dollars fishing, I believe.
I for sure. But yet, we have holes in our socks, holes in our drawers, got the same pants you had on 4 years ago. My brother said >> I'm talking about me. Well, the best thing to do is just let loose and drag.
That's That's the old saying. Like I if I still had my old F-150, I'd be driving that truck. Why not? I had to get rid of Yeah, it had It was about to broke down.
>> to get you a brand new diesel. I had to get me a diesel, burn that coal, baby.
Hey, bro.
Hey, let's get it going.
>> How about them grass prices?
>> [laughter] >> All right, look. Uh we're going to jump in these baits, dog. So, everybody picked out a bait is what we did on this one. A little different from our typical rate the bait where we just do a category of baits. We each picked a bait that we felt like the pros won't tell you.
That we'll talk about. All right, so Adrian, you're over there quiet, my boy.
I'm going to let you kick this off, man.
>> all right. Got the dogs out. Y'all Hey, Hey, hey, hey.
>> Shout out to my boy Adrian for getting the dogs out. Always got THEM DOGS OUT.
>> [laughter] >> HEY, LISTEN. THAT'S THE LISTEN. THEM BOYS REACHED OUT TO THE HEAVENS, BRO.
YEAH, MAN. WHAT? HERE, get that thing.
You go ahead kick that thing off, man.
Poppa Swamp Lord, man. So, for me, uh you know, there's We already talked about it.
A ton of really good shad spawn baits that guys throw day in day out, but one thing in particular I've won a lot of money on a popping frog. You know, we didn't really touch base on what shad actually spawn on.
Great.
>> generally speaking, if I'm throwing this popping frog, I'm throwing around something green. Uh shad really like to spawn Come on, bro.
>> on on anything green, so it could be, you know, vegetation, it could be green laydowns, but that's where I'm going to throw this popping frog. What I like about it is you can cover a lot of water.
You know, all these baits that you see us talking about, they're all power fishing techniques, and this is no different. I mean, it's fast and furious, you're catching them on braid, which is awesome, and you know, it's it's We're always talking about the shad are spawning up high in the water column.
So, what are you going to throw? You're throwing >> topwater. Um and for me, you know, I just I really really like this popping frog.
>> Yeah, it's a good one. Yeah, man. So, how are we rating this?
>> There is So, we're not So, we're not rating the actual bait? Well, you can.
>> the technique, right?
>> Well, How How do you want to do this?
>> Okay. Yeah.
Just rate the technique.
>> Yeah.
>> So, so the technique, I mean, >> For the application? For the application, yeah. So, so A A frog isn't as versatile as some of the other baits we're going to talk about.
Right. So, it's it's very situational.
But if the stars align, it's probably the best bait you can throw. So, that's where this is going to get kind of hard in in in rating. I just >> But for me, I would say I would say a popping frog is probably an eight out of 10 when it comes down to shad spawn.
>> Yeah.
When the conditions are right, like I said, maybe you have a little bit of stain in the water, they're spawning around some type of vegetation, around some green laydowns, this is a bait that you can just get in there, get out, and and and be able to catch them.
>> Keep rolling. I like that.
>> Thank you.
All right, so we got uh the Swamp Lord.
This is actually a really good frog.
>> It is. It is. It's pretty soft. Um So, shad spawn frog, and I got a little bit of experience with a frog on shad spawn. So, when I won Ross Barnett, um I was chopping up the pond. These ain't no secrets no more. They're out there.
>> And I had a frog tied on. I ended up catching uh I think two, or maybe one or two. I caught a three-pounder on the championship day.
The water was blown out, but there were still shad spawning. They had pushed into the pockets, and there were shad spawning in the pockets.
>> Wow. But, a frog and a swim jig was what I won that tournament on in flipping.
>> Yep. But, like we said, the shad spawn was there today, gone tomorrow.
>> Oh, yeah. Is that what happened to you?
>> [clears throat] >> Damn, I don't know what just happened right there.
>> [laughter] >> I choked on some spit.
Damn.
>> You all right, man?
>> [laughter] >> Well, don't swallow that, boy. Oh.
>> Oh, my god. Edit that out or leave it in there?
>> [laughter] >> Anyway, I caught 19 lb 12 oz on day one.
I think I remember. Oh, yeah. I was in like third place, fourth place, whatever I was in.
I go back up there.
Never had a bite.
The next day? Shad was not spawning, nothing changed, it was cloudy, blown out cloudy. Yeah. I was like, "Dude, they're going to be doing it all morning."
>> Right. What a trash fish. Yeah. I went swim jig on all my other stuff that I caught them on and all the other extra stuff that I had bites on. Never had a swim jig bite.
>> No way. I was like, What happened?
Then I learned it's mythical. Yeah. It's a mythical It's like a damn I don't know what you would call [snorts] it. It's like Harry Potter. It's like spawning bass. It's like spawning bass. They never come.
>> It's like champy or big shampoo. I don't know. It's a mythical thing.
It's amazing when it happens.
>> [laughter] >> or a dragon. You don't ever know if it will. So, anyway, long story short, I'm going to rate the frog. I'm going to say it's eight out of 10 for me. I A frog is one of the most fun baits out there. So, swamp lord, eight out of 10 for me.
>> 100% bro. Yeah, again, this is one All these baits we're going to talk about, it's not one that you just immediately reach for in terms of shad spawn fishing. But, I really like a frog, a popping frog, in particular. Obviously, it kind of gives that mimicry of multiple shad, kind of, you know, it's spit it's spitting other than just walking. So, I really like a popping frog as opposed to just your standard moving a little bit more water, right? Grab a little more attention.
But, what makes this bait special Adrian and Dustin kind of touched on this is you can put this in places you can't put these other baits we're talking about.
Skipping under green trees, way back in a grass mat that has a little hole in it like this right here. Like, that's where he's at. That's where he's sitting. You can't fish many baits effectively in that scenario. Um, I remember guys catching them. Jacob, you might have been in on this.
Remember Otter trashed them at Okeechobee on Shads on the frog in Kissimmee grass, I think.
>> remember that. Remember that? Yeah. He almost won, almost beat Timmy Horton. He caught a 9-day one. Right. On a frog.
Yeah, I I I literally watched him reel it in. Oh, serious? Yeah, see? A big one. But, that was in 2017.
>> throwing a toad. Years ago. I was throwing a toad. But, again, the power of the frog, like like Adrian said, and and it's situational, but when it's right I mean, it's it's 10 out of 10.
Just point-blank period. So, I ain't going to go up Jacob's going to talk on this, too. I ain't going to go too much in detail. I'm giving the frog I'm giving him a seven out of 10, and the only reason is because I'm he's not tied on everywhere I go, but if it has grass or if it has trees in the water he's for sure tied on. So, in that sense, he's a he's a 10 out of 10, but on an everyday scenario Shads on the bait, he's a seven out of 10. Definitely going to have him rigged up. Definitely agree.
Yep.
All right, so we got a Swamp Thumper, which is just a traditional popping frog.
To me, um, you can't leave home without if your lakes around you um, have any type of vegetation like these guys talked about, or cypress trees, or any kind of hard cover, cuz they spawn on hard cover as well. They spawn on docks, they spawn on wood, they start on cypress trees, they spawn on rock walls, they spawn on about anything. Yep. So, but obviously this bait is a really good bait to be throwing around cover. Um bushes, like freshly flooded bushes is another one that's really green trees, of course, is a big thing. Um short of like a And this is the thing, is we're talking about baits that again don't get talked about a ton. If you live around the Kissimmee River, you're probably like, "Yeah, a frog's obviously a Yeah. a a shad spawn bait." But if you don't live around that area and and the water comes up in some lake in Texas and you're like, "What do I do to throw this weekend for a shad spawn? Oh, this guy said, 'Hey, a frog's a great bait to throw.'" That's a 10 out of 10, like Mark said. Not every day scenario, but when you the This is a bait a top five bait to throw on a shad spawn under those scenarios and under those conditions. And so, and it's a great frog guarding bait during the same time of year, so you can sort of move that around as well, so you catching both kinds of fish with the same profile lure. So, that's something that's really good to think about. Um I I love I love a popping frog this time of specifically for that, cuz you're able to cover a lot of water, move it pretty fast, and with that cup, like you'll catch those and just displace it like Mark said I'm talking about. I'm going to give him Again, in the situation, he is a 9 out of 10. A frog There is nothing better. I mean, even at O.H. Ivie, I didn't realize it was a shad spawn really was the key.
Crashed them on a shad spawn on a frog.
Cuz I could have There was no other bait that I could get in there, let that bait go in there right, and like make that bait work correctly, and it was the perfect bait that morning. Could I catch I catch a couple on a swim jig? Yeah, I catch a couple.
Um fishing around, yes, but that was the bait Yeah. to catch them.
Yeah, I sat there and watched you live.
>> [laughter] >> After the event, I said, "Unbelievable."
You're like, "Dang, this is so good."
I'm like, "What?" Anyways, all right, that's the frog. And you found that shad spawn in the evening.
That's that is one thing about a shad spawn that that we have noticed is like early morning shad spawn main deals in the morning but also the up in the evenings they'll they'll start spawning, too. It's It's when the water temperature gets up. Yeah, water temperature gets closer to that sweet spot.
>> [clears throat] >> All right, guys. Let's fire it off for a quick. What you got, Sizz? You know me, I got a jerk plug in my hand.
>> Uh-oh. A jerk plug. Shout out to my man Micah.
He calling that term jerk jerk plug.
>> I actually said that during the Ross Barnett tournament. I felt like it was yesterday. Damn, we were reminiscing.
They had me on camera on there and I was talking about JVD or something. He He called him. He called him on and and then I seen He finished third, didn't he? I seen Well, Kevin finished second and Jonathan finished third. Yeah. And I think he caught him on a jerk bait, but I I run past him and I seen him there where doing all this and I'm like >> [laughter] >> in that dirty water, too.
on a jerk bait. Speaking of that.
And then I remember I seen JVD running up the pond. I said, "I guess they ain't biting this old jerk plug."
>> [laughter] >> That's funny. So, anyway, back to the back to the show. So, this is a PXR Maverick um from Rapala and this is my go-to jerk bait. Um my good buddy helped design this as well.
Didn't you have anything to do with this? I helped with the hooks, for sure.
Yeah. And and may may may tinkered with it a little bit. But, yeah.
This This place freaking awesome. That's one of my favorite colors, matte shad.
That looks juicy. All right, so So, this is the thing about a jerk bait with a shad spawn.
A lot of times and I'm going to give you all some nuggets real quick. Jacob might get mad. He may want to edit this out.
Damn, I don't know if I want to tell you all this.
It's It's out there anyway.
A lot of times a shad spawn is down rock banks where a frog and a swim jig, and a spinner bait you can catch them, but a lot of times it's down rock banks, and places that you're not going to swim a jig, and this is way more productive in areas like that, deeper. That's the key, also.
A deeper shad spawn.
Talk about it. I'm getting deep. You're getting deep, bro. All right, so keep in mind there's a lot of guys put out brush, a lot of people There's always a deeper shad spawn. I caught them on Lake Jordan on a deep shad spawn one time.
I I till still this day, I was like, "Why are they there? Why were they there?"
They were on an offshore place, and they were out there in like 14 ft.
When you say they, you're talking about the shad? Or the bass? Or the bass.
Okay. But I rolled up, and this is way before forward facing. Yeah. I idled over a place just to check it, and dude, I seen there was shad there, and when I tell you they were just like blown up. There was like 40 of them lying across the place. I'm like, "Oh my god." It was a deep shad spawn.
And it was it was on a rock pile, and the shad were spawning on that rock pile, and there was actually some green slimy grass down there on the bottom.
Yeah. And the shad were spawning on all that, and the bass were just rampaging on them. I pulled up there, and I won the tournament. That's crazy.
>> I won it right there. On a deep shad spawn.
>> shad spawn. Damn. Oh, it's really cool.
So, anyway, a jerkbait works really good for your deeper clear water places, stuff like that. Um I'm going to rate the Maverick Man, wait. I'm going to rate him. I caught him pretty damn good on this bait. I'm going to say an 7.8 8 8 out of 10. 8. And what's cool about this bait is has a weight transfer system in it.
Here? Yep. So, you can cast it a long way. Bomb. And he sticks right back up, so really good bait.
Eight out of 10 for me. A jerk bait, not your conventional shad spawn bait. No, it's not. Sucker gets it done. Um so before I was all the way up on game about the shad spawn. I was still a little green to it. I knew a little bit about it. Another tournament scenario, it's crazy. We've been fishing so long that I could just think about any particular bait and there's three, four, five, six, seven, 10 tournaments where I'm like, "Damn, I remember that." One that pops out. We was all there. We was all fishing. Y'all remember uh rookie season for us, Adrian you already been here a year or two maybe.
But we went to uh Toledo Bend.
Remember that? Shad spawn was on that deal, too. Remember that, DC? Yep. All right. I called them on a jerk bait on shad spawn there. Fishing.
>> On the grass. No, I was fishing steeper banks. They were spawning on like rock steeper rock.
Huh. Yeah. Hey, Kevin was throwing a jerk bait in that tournament for shad spawn. Really?
>> Until he started >> Well, hell, so was uh Until he started Murray Murray won that event. He called them on a jerk bait. He won on a jerk bait. Oh, he did? He called them out for shad spawn. No, he called them cranking though, too. But he called them What he called them on the final day? He called them jerk. But he did. How was that shad spawn? That was a body.
We're starting to get back into the rhythm.
Calling it back in. I called them, too, that same week on a jerk bait on rock.
And again, unconventional, but I was like, "What can I throw out there?" I literally tied this up the morning of.
Like, I'm digging around. I seen a shad spawn. I'm like, "Damn, what can I present to them that I'm going to get my bait down a little deeper, but then stay in the strike zone?" Sure. Right? And they weren't like busting on them, but you could see the shad a little bit. And so I was like, "A damn jerk bait." So literally dug in my box. I remember like yesterday. I tied on a a Lucky Craft Pointer at the time.
>> Yeah. A Pointer 100. Old school was here. One of the first jerk baits I started throwing. OG. Bro, second cast, 6-pounder. OG. I was like damn.
I said got the money, get the net.
Hey, oh wait.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah, sit down bro.
>> Hey, I told him that. What, get the net?
>> I never tell you that. No.
>> [laughter] >> You told your Marshall get the net. I was dude, I'm telling you, I think I was on one of them like My [laughter] first tournament. No, it was it was in the elite series, I remember it. Rookie year. Yes, I'm used to fishing team tournaments with my brother. [laughter] I hooked a big and I think I was on Rayburn. I was on Rayburn.
>> [laughter] >> Dude, I hooked a big, a big and then I'm sitting there and I'm like, I said damn big and I said get the net.
>> [laughter] >> I was like, damn dude, I'm just used TO SAYING THAT.
>> [laughter] >> THAT'S so funny bro. I can see you saying something like that. I said get to get the net, it's a good net.
>> [laughter] >> It's funny. You're right. Oh, but anyways, so many memories and so many baits, but anyways, when when you're fishing a little bit deeper, did you see drops some game on y'all? I don't know if y'all was paying attention. I don't know, we might need to edit that out.
Bass spawn ain't always on the surface, you can't always visually see it. They will spawn subsurface and deeper, especially on like brush piles, especially if they fresh.
That's some game for y'all. I ain't I ain't going to go too much in depth on that, that's some game. But anyway, a jerk bait excellent in those scenarios that obviously that 4 to 6 foot range, around there, you can get a jerk bait down and you can get the job done. I really like a jerk bait in general, it's become a one of my favorite baits, it's really grown on me over the years.
I'm going to get this bad boy.
A Rapala Maverick, he's a good jerk bait, I've caught some on him. These freaking hooks sticky as I don't know what son. Y'all be careful with him. The red line. [clears throat] The red line don't play bro.
Them scary. Yeah, they they they they bad.
>> Tell me we hook them by accident, scared.
>> They bad bro, I ain't going to lie to you. But uh I'm going to give them a 7.5.
Jerk bait. I like it.
Jerk These guys talked about it a lot.
Jerk bait's unbelievable. The one thing that I'm going to talk to you guys about a jerk bait, the whole thing is is when you're trying when the fish aren't around the cover, specifically I mean when I I look back at like a lot of tournament history, like right We used to fish a lot of tournaments when the shad spawn. You get out there super early. I think now tournaments take off a little bit later.
Even a lot of other tournaments still do, like even some Toyotas and stuff.
Like we just don't get the perfect scenario of going out at like at daybreak daybreak legitimately anymore.
>> [snorts] >> So, the cool thing about a jerk bait is is when you're trying to make those bass react and they're up there actively feeding on shad, it's just the best one of the best baits when it does play, sort of like the frog, there's nothing that can beat it. It is a bait that absolutely triggers big ones. I've caught a bunch of them on it.
I've caught them all over the country from clear water to dirty water. And the thing still blows my mind, Kevin, and and JVD were smashed on like that. And they were smashed in that water. It was dirty, dog. And it got a little later in the day, too. And that water was dirty.
That water was dirty. And they were slack lining them on the jerk. It blew my mind how good it That was one of those tournaments where they just had the bait figured out. That was a bait deal. That was a 100% a bait deal.
But a jerk bait don't sleep on this, especially for my guys that's in stained water.
A lot of clear water lakes, bass are getting a little bit more hip with forward facing sonar to a jerk bait. A little bit more hip.
Just like a 10. Just a 10. He's not all the way, but like, you know, like a 10% kind of deal. Like instead of getting like a 100 bites on a jerk bait, you get like four negative 100.
>> [laughter] >> Thanks. And they just follow you. It's a hell of a search bait.
>> But during the shad spawn, they still are a little dumb still at that moment.
And I was like, now at 7:35 they are not They're not that smart. They're not.
They are jerk bait. Anyway, so all that being said, Maverick, unbelievable jerk bait, works great. Jerk baits in general, I feel like it's a a nine out of a 10 on flat points and that kind of stuff on like shallow bars.
Jerk bait just can trigger bass into biting that a lot of other baits won't.
Yeah. Personally.
100% agree. Oh gosh. See what I mean?
>> It's in my finger already. Bro, look look legitimately No, he's on me. He just fell on me. But watch how hard it is He got three hooks in him.
>> to get this damn thing off me. Them dang hooks are in me. Bro, these hooks are not Are you almost had to pass out earlier?
>> had to do the break trick. Almost had to do the break trick.
>> Are you almost had to do the break trick on yourself? Here here hold on. Careful, [snorts] Adrian. Oh, we good. I ain't worried about it. Golly, put them talons on I got I got I got some thick skin.
>> Put them talons on me.
My wife loves these hands.
A jerk bait.
So, I personally haven't thrown this Maverick. I know you guys talk about it a lot. I throw I throw a Stunner most of the time when I'm throwing a jerk bait.
>> Yeah. Um but again, a jerk a jerk bait it's just really specific, you know?
When the when the conditions align, I've caught them really good. Actually, tournament tournament that you won. You won a tournament you follow, Red Crest.
Ah. Jerking over brush. Well, before that I caught them actually throwing a Spook bait on the same type of deal offshore. But knowing that, I'd probably go through a jerk bait in that situation. Um wasn't on that program in that tournament. But I've caught them really well on seawalls on a jerk bait.
Um again, we're talking about a lot of baits that we're just doing a lot of power fishing with. And when the conditions align, the jerk bait during a shad spawn again, I would give it probably an eight out of 10. Yeah. It's just I mean it's all about covering water because you have a very short window of opportunity. That's it. You know, I mean a lot of times, you know, you literally have an out, you know, and uh tops. And if you don't maximize that, hodgepodge around, really move around, um and do a lot of power fishing, you're not going to maximize that, so.
A jerkbait is a definitely a bait that you can fish >> What would you give it, a eight? Eight out of 10. Eight out of 10. It's good.
And a lot of things we're talking about here, too, we're we're we're we're taking winners of baits that we feel like are good for certain scenarios. So, in a scenario that we feel like we're describing, they're typically going to be highly rated.
>> Yeah. Yeah. But to the to the situation, you know? Like like like to like like we said, I mean, a spinnerbait, a bladed jig, a swim jig, those are your staples.
Those are your baits that you're going to have >> Day in and day out. day in and day out, always tied on, no matter what the conditions are, no matter what kind of cover you're fishing out of. But if you're fishing hard cover, or if you're fishing offshore, I'm not really >> Even offshore grass. Offshore grass. No, you you smacked I think grass like destroyed them, I think, one year. It was either on Toledo >> Toledo or Harris. Toledo. Toledo.
Destroyed them. Bass thumbing in Florida, offshore. Jerking on Harris.
Yes, sir.
Listen, these these baits Another thing that I want to always emphasize when we do these rate the baits, we've talked about this before. We literally all four of us went in our boats and pulled these baits out.
>> Yeah. We ain't giving y'all no BS. This is legit stuff, bro, that we pull out of our boats, that we're actually using in the dirt, man. So, we got two more baits.
Um JW, how you feeling, bro? You feel like you want to I'll keep keep it rolling. Yeah.
So, obviously, something that's a little unique. Um A lot of different baits out there that are shad imitators. One that's come along over the years is a obviously a swimbait is a really good one. This is a 4-in mare, but then having the hybrid swimbait jig, uh what's actually this is the the hybrid bladed uh blade hybrid HD bladed swimbait.
>> [laughter] >> It's like it's like this long but basically it's like [laughter] literally like 4 inches long. So obviously there's a lot of flashy swimmer a lot of people know that. This is BMC's version of that.
In realistically just having a little more flash in certain scenarios I like this. Of course you can underspin the opposite of this or just a little bit different than this with a little bit more flash and makes it look like there's shad swimming together and just gives you something. Typically this is a cleaner water deal. It does work in a substitute for a swim jig instead of showing the fish something different when they're used to like on that Coosa River chain or places where they're used to seeing the swim jig all the time or the water's getting cleaner where the fish can see better. You have to make those adjustments but you can still need something that's going to stay in that strike zone cuz even with a swim jig you're popping and keeping that strike zone. They react. So that's really where I'm selecting this guy. He's been one that has played in very specific [snorts] situations not a everyday shad swimbait even though a swimbait is and the negative of him is he does it's not open hook right? So you don't have an open hook on him. So but the other side of that is you can throw you know an underspin if you do want that. So you get the same imitator so like I think a underspin open water for this for this technique flashy or this you know the for the opposite side for cover.
So for those scenarios in that situation if you have fish that are really keyed in on on shad that morning shad spawn and you're not having a tough time for them to commit I would give this a eight out of 10 because it is something that it's not always the first bait that I select but it's one trick in my box that I'm going to pick up when the fish are really a little bit goofy that I feel like I can generate more bites than the next guy. And a lot of times that's what it's all about is just getting a couple of those bigger fish. They seen more white jigs coming by their face. They seen a chatter bait clicking by them 47 times and they're like, "You know what?
Typically they're a little dumber around the shad spawn in that first hour. But there's also sometimes they haven't seen it. They know better. And so even when it gets towards the tail end of where like, "Hey, you get to where the shad stop flickering." They get they get smarter and smarter and smarter where then all of a sudden that sun gets up and them suckers know better and they look at everything.
>> Yeah. Do you call it Do you call it the bean? High bean. High bean. VJ VJ is like, "That high bean is undefeated, man."
>> Hey, shout out VJ. That high bean is undefeated, man. It is, too. It's like he ain't wrong, bro. He's not wrong. So, that all being said, I'm going to give him I'm going to give him I'm going to give him 8.5 cuz I think overall it's the most underutilized sleeper. Not Not I won't I'm not going to say 8.5. I'm going to say 8.5 in the sleep again. When it goes down, it can be the best bait in your box. Yeah.
For sure. And and and and definitely a substitute for the traditional style of what. That's why I'm saying it's going to be a It'll put a couple more fish in your boat.
I like that. Yeah. All right, y'all.
A flashy swimmer, a hybrid bladed DMC, a mayor, a soft body swimbait of your choice in this profile size. You know, more than likely 3 to 4 in. You know.
I do want to say when we're talking shad spawn, we're most specifically talking about threadfin. Right? There's a lot of different shads out there. We got the gizzards. We got the alewives up north.
We got the ciscos. A lot of different baits, right? But we're more specifically talking about threadfin shads. So, generally speaking, they're your 2 and 1/2 2 to 2 and 1/2 to What would be a big threat >> Five or four or five inch one? Five or 5 six or four inch or five or five inch Four to five inch so so a bait like this fits that fits that bill really good.
All the baits we're talking about are in that three inch or in that realm. I love a flashy swimmer. Absolutely love it.
Not only for a swimbait I mean just it's a great under utilized technique I feel like in general we're talking about imitating a shad. Where this thing shines for me is since we are talking about the swimbait I'm going to keep it specific to that.
>> [snorts] >> Where this would shine for me is going to be in grass fisheries.
Two to four maybe six foot deep similar to places you would throw a jerk bait but you keep getting your jerk bait caught up in the grass and you keep dragging grass every cast.
This guy right here got the blade underneath so like Jacob mentioned it's like it's like giving the effect of it might be multiple baits. That just draws attention. You see guys throw a spinner bait with three blades, things like that they just kind of like hey over here just gets that little bit of attention and of course you couple that with a good boot tail swimbait that's swimming natural action.
You're going to get some dupes. So a flashy swimmer man this is this is one I feel like it's super under utilized and it's a it's a favorite of mine but I'm going to give him I'm going to give him a eight as well.
Little cover little snaggy down there need something to bring through you don't want to throw a swim jig.
Flashy. You don't doubt >> [clears throat] >> Flashy. So swimbait the mayor Yes sir. for a swimbait. So this is a four inch bait and I've actually caught a pretty good bit of bass on this bait.
>> Yeah. I caught them at Conroe on it now it wasn't on a swimbait it was pre-spawn. Yeah. I caught some damn big ones.
>> You did too.
>> like six two fives I caught some tanks.
>> Yeah you did.
>> I had like a 25 pound 26 pound no 27 pound bag that Yeah, I had two sevens. Two sevens? I caught two sevens, a six, and two fives.
Unbelievable. I don't know what that is.
It was like 20 >> Where was that at? I don't know. People were still That boy said I don't know.
What do you mean you don't know? I think I think you made the top 10. No, I didn't. No. But I'm sitting there watching him and everybody else freaking smashing them, and then I'm like Yeah.
It was a good But I caught that one on there. I caught a couple on free rig.
But anyway, long story short, um this right here works very, very good around grass. Yes, it does. Um any kind of There's shad spawn. Um Coosa River grass, your the water willow, you can wind this through there, and this is something different.
>> Yeah, it's good. Everybody's throwing white swim jigs.
A white swim jig is good, but when that water color gets real clear, and they've been pressured, you need to change. So, this is something that that works really, really well, uh especially with the blade on the knee. It's a It's It's literally a shad. Yeah. Straight up.
Like, how much closer to a shad can you get?
There you go. And you got a blade underneath it. Two shads.
>> Yeah, two shads.
Looks like they're spawning. Yeah.
It's It's a no-brainer. So, I'm going to rate this dude right here probably a s- [snorts] 7.956.
Hey, leave me alone. 7.9 So, that's going to round that up to basically an eight. It's an eight. Okay.
Um I think it's a different bait. That's why we're shooting this video. Try it out on your home lake. Yeah.
>> [clears throat] >> Yeah, so a little little backstory. I I call him the flashy. But um the flashy, I remember there was a tournament, shoot, this is back in the FLW days, and Micah Micah Frazier called them on this one on the Rayburn. Mhm. And again, it was offshore grass, and that's where I mean, these guys are already hitting them. That's That's where you're going to really throw this bait. What I You can't really skip this bait well, so you're not going to get ahead and skip this underneath the boat dock or you know, skip them, you know, maybe back into a laydown or something like that.
Like that's just not where this bait's going to shine, but again, we keep on talking about it. When the situation aligns and you're fishing offshore grass and there's shad are out there spawning and you've got a little bit of cleaner water.
>> Rip rap.
>> This is This is going to be a bait. And the one thing I do highly recommend though with this bait, cuz we're always talking about it, and even out here on the Bass Pro Tour is about being efficient. So, you need a good soft plastic on there. And I actually have thrown this bait. We actually tried it out, I believe. I don't know where we're at, but we're throwing it in a pool.
>> in Florida. In Florida, I remember that.
Trying to figure out what bait actually ran the best on this flashy. And this was definitely one of the one of the better swimbaits.
But But this this plastic that they that they have the whole Crusty lineup, I know it kind of varies depending on what bait it is, but this is a very durable plastic. Um don't you dare put a Keitech on there. Stop.
>> [laughter] >> Hey, once this comes off, The one thing The one thing I And I don't know I don't know if you guys do this or not. Let me see this sucker. I haven't even looked at it.
>> love a Keitech, but god. So, the one thing that I will do, we haven't talked about this much, but so that that corkscrew on this flashy, a lot of times, so it's a longer corkscrew on there and it actually takes away from the butt of your hook a little bit.
>> Free game.
>> So, if you actually cut that corkscrew in half where you have just enough plastic on there, Free game.
>> get a little bit more bite on this flashy. Hook up ratio goes up a little bit more. Man, hey. See, listen, man.
>> Tinker. If y'all made it this far, tinker. If you If you made it this far in the video and you ain't subscribed, slap yourself for that free game.
>> Yeah. Free game.
That's what we call it.
>> Well, so I Yeah, I'll get I'll get I'm going to I'm going to keep I'm going to keep it neutral, man. I've been I've been running eights all all night tonight. So, I'm going to give this sucker an eight.
>> You're going to run that eight. That won't come out. good bait. Hey, before we let him go to sleep over here, the swim bait that is. Let me see him real quick. Since you gave a little nugget, I'm going to give y'all a little Hey, I should be charging for these things.
>> out nuggets. Y'all ready?
One of my biggest pet peeves all right in fishing is when people So, you call it Texpose?
>> Texpose. You bring it all the way through.
>> When people either A don't Texpose and they leave too much meat on the hook. If you run your hand down through there and you can't really push your hand into that plastic, it's hard to hook a bass like that.
>> If you don't feel that tip of that point of that hook, you're >> going to hook him and if you do, it ain't going to stay in there. You're just going to barely For the most part, you're keeping it up above the grass.
>> I will say that I will say there's two scenarios though.
Like a worm or whatever. Well, listen, if you're I agree with you, but when you're flipping, fishing, flipping where heavier cover, you can't have that. No, I agree with that.
>> Exactly.
>> Right? I agree with that. But you also got a stiff rod and you're short line.
>> Right. Dude, I'm telling you what. You you bomb him and you get bit at the end of your cast. You need a little bit of probably a Texposed. They'll Texas rig like a lizard, you know, shout out to Vance, watermelon chartreuse.
>> [laughter] >> He'll barely, you know, and not him, but a lot of people they'll just barely hook that hook in there and they'll just go fish.
>> Yeah. But anyway, what I'm what I'm getting at here. Now, I do this. I don't know about y'all.
So, when you hook the swim bait on there, I got to put some tension right there and after I and you don't even really have to Texpose it cuz there's a slot on top of that mirror.
But you can leave him like that. He'll stay. But what I like doing, we've already hooked this one.
What I like doing is I'll push him back and forward and kind of waller out a hole right there. So, he slides down.
All right. So, I'll waller out a hole and then whenever he bites Now you see it, now you don't. Now you see it and he's out of the way real quick. Yeah. So like and he'll stay up there cuz you know the natural force of the water is going to pull that back.
But when he bites it he gets out of the way. Yes, sir. So you give him some you give him some length and some room to move around. So while you out of the hole right there and that VMC hook going to get it.
That's free game. It's good.
>> Hey, I mean that's so simple. Listen, you know but it but it but it's good it's these things that a lot of you don't think about that that hurting their their their hookup ratio.
>> Cuz the hookup ratio on that isn't the best.
>> It's not.
>> No, it's not but if you waller out that hole, see how you like when he when he bites it >> Yeah. the whole bait slides down.
>> Let me see. I'm going to throw y'all a nugget today since we just don't real quick. On these, I love this bait but the first thing I do before I put a bait on here or any of that or cut the spring like Adrian any of that. I'm going to take and place I'm going to take some needle nose and I'm going to pop that hook up. I'm talking about like a I don't know like a millimeter. I don't I mean whatever it is.
Just a little you want to get cocked up just a hair. That's going to increase your bite ratio. You don't want your line tie your hook point to be like if you can see it like this like your line tie your hook point are the same plane that's bad news bass fishing.
>> [laughter] >> You waiting to lose one. That's that's what you call the bite of the hook. Yes.
And if you don't have much bite between your line tie your hook point Rhapsody. Good luck.
>> [laughter] >> Good luck. Where where where my man from again? Uh Albania.
>> Albania. I love bringing that back.
>> Good luck.
>> [laughter] >> I love bringing that back. Good luck.
All right, y'all look we got one more bait for y'all. We getting out of here.
Where we at?
48 minutes. We going over an hour? All right, we're going to roll with it. We we we be talking, boy. All right, last but not least I'm going old school. Old >> hey, y'all know I'm old school in a lot of more ways bro. I just can't shake it.
So, this is the I reached in my boat and I pulled this out for y'all.
How about a shout out a square bill crank bait? Okay. You know what I'm saying? This one happens to be a a Bill Lewis, of course, SB57.
But, a square bill crank bait in a shad spawn.
Phenomenal bait right here.
>> [clears throat] >> That's a lot of situations you get other baits hung up. They just get snagged up.
You can't fish them. This is where the square bill crank bait really, really shines. Rip rap banks, we know shad love to spawn on rip rap. That's just a classic A- anybody that's watching this video, y'all got rip rap on your lake somewhere. So, that's an off top place you can run to. You can just check for it. You're going to have white birds lined up and all up and down the bank.
Blue herons, they're going to be in there partying.
Bro, a square bill crank bait in my mind is a sleeper. It's not one you think about every single day, but absolutely gets the job done. It fits the bill on profile, action.
Uh obviously, you want to stick with your shad patterns, your whites. Uh this is Tennessee shad I got right here, but you just want something really natural in shad pattern.
And uh this bait will get it done.
Deflects off cover excellent, I already said that. Uh comes through wood, comes through trees. It's just again, a different look that they're not seeing every single day. It's not a white swim jig, but this sucker gets it done. I love cranking. I love square bill crank baits.
I'm giving this guy a nine out of 10 for your boy.
For your boy.
>> For me.
So, who wants it?
Like sizzle.
All right, y'all know me. I'm a big time crank bait guy.
>> You lost your You caught more bass this year cranking. You had your You ain't you for sure didn't catch some this year cranking.
>> I know well, I did. Mhm. Yeah. I I'm I'm proud of myself. I know. I probably hooked up on a few there. I I was probably Bro, I like to see that. I had to, man. I'm I'm not the biggest crank bait guy.
And then I talked about this. I ain't going to bore y'all, but I don't get to crank a ton on the Coosa River. Dude, we got grass. You don't have a lot of grass.
>> got freaking steep rock banks.
>> Yeah, they don't.
I mean we ain't got no flats there.
I mean literally. You have the grab you grab places you can roll up and bomb that square up there on them. But you can do that for sure. But I mean I would say for sure, yeah, cranking. Yeah, hey, love it. Love it. Get it.
>> [laughter] >> Nah, I do enjoy throwing a crankbait.
It's fun.
>> They lock up on it. Um square bill on shad spawn amazing. Um this bait, I know a guy who designed this bait. It's a great bait.
>> Good bait.
I'm going to give him a I'm going to give a square bill square bill Yeah, just in general.
A five out of 10. Okay. I'll give this bait a 7.9.
>> I look at that. My boy says love, right?
You know what I'm talking about? Cuz I like that bait. You gave me you gave me a few of them. I enjoyed it.
>> a couple of them.
Yeah. Yeah, they always they always say what's the what is it? Match the hatch.
That's it. And I mean this probably out of all the baits we talked about looks about like a threadfin. Yeah. And for me I mean I really enjoy cranking. I've I've uh I haven't won any tournaments cranking, but I've cashed a lot of checks cranking. And the good thing about a crankbait is this we've we've had this saying going around the house lately about locking in. Like you can lock this in your hand and roll and and and just get bites. And it catches small ones, it catches big ones. It just gets a lot of bites. So you know I mean clearly I mean it wasn't a shad spawn tournament, but you had a great Red Crest. Yeah. And you called them not on a shad pattern, but you know, more of a crawfish pattern. But cranking is is one of my favorite things to do. I really really enjoy it. Back in the day fishing FLW tour >> Yeah, man. watching that daylight catching catching a lot of them on a square bill.
Facts. Shout out to Brad Rutherford. One of his favorite baits over there on Murray is a Freak side five which is another version of a crank bait and that's what a herring spawn. Oh herring spawn. Smash another sleeper bait like a lipless. Oh yeah. It's another sleeper bait.
It's another sleeper bait.
I didn't even think about that till you just said it.
What even but even like in general but it's normally off shore driven you know.
Grass stuff like that. Grass even gravel. Same same type of deal. Yes I mean I'll I'll give I'll give a square bill again a eight out of ten I'm going to give them all eights cuz it's all real situational clearly if you have grass kind of like you're talking about DC you don't you're not going to throw a square bill. But you know if you're fishing around a lot of rip rap which is something that bass really shad really like to spawn on this is probably going to be my number one bait in that scenario. So given that I'm going to give them eight out of ten.
Given that we love it. J dub. For me the square bill like the first time I remember like somebody catching them on a shad spawn. And that first one but like Skeet won at Guntersville I think square throwing like a 2.5 on like high spots and that was around the that was around a shad spawn.
Was that not when he came out with that super big square bill?
It was like it it might have been a 4.5 or 3.5 but he caught them like on a RC.
Okay. He was wrecking them on it. Like I think he won or Aaron won but he ended up like second or third or something like that. But then Skeet I remember when I remember when you were fishing there at bass it was like we had a bass event at Cherokee Lake. I remember that.
And Skeet smashed them the first morning on a swimbait and square bill. He did.
Like I remember watching watching him and smashed them. Didn't Hackney win one on square bill like a 2.5 on shad spawn at Pickwick or something?
No that was off shore school.
He caught them on a jig I think. Did he?
He caught them on a square bill. There were a lot of guys catching them on a crank bait on shad spawn. There were a lot of caught, but typically it's driven by either most of the time it's a secondary point, a bar, uh or like an off like like a more of an offshore deal. Mhm. So like I mean, there's times when a square bill will play down the bank, but it's not like my first bait to throw down the bank, but when but speed always wins. Mhm. One thing that I I I'm I still vividly remember Jeff >> Creech. Shout out Jeff Creech.
He said that he was talking to Rick Clunn, and Rick Clunn always said, "Man, the big ones always bite something winding." And what he meant by that speed triggers big ones to bite.
>> Mhm.
Speed will always trumpet over the years. Speed triggers the big the big ones to bite. They have to make their decision really quick, yeah.
>> And so that's what a crank bait does better than probably any of these baits that we have right here Mhm. is speed.
