[00:00:21]The devil in The Devil in Silver is not like any other kind of devil people have seen before.

[00:00:28]>> [screaming] >> Welcome to New Hyde Hospital. Let me be very clear. You are not a prisoner here.

[00:00:38]So [snorts] much of the story is about our main character Pepper played by Dan Stevens who is wrongfully thrown into a psychiatric hospital and once he's there discovers that there are a lot of forces trying to keep him there.

[00:00:55]You know where you are? You're in the jungle, baby. The Devil in Silver is about systems that are broken, systems that are predatory or built to be broken so that they can consume you and live off of you.

[00:01:08]>> Everyone in here has to comply. You got to take this pill, eat this sludge, endure this torture. An institution like this very often fails the people it is supposed to be helping and serving.

[00:01:19]>> I DON'T BELONG HERE. I WANT OUT.

[00:01:22]PEPPER USED TO BE A DRUMMER for a metal band called Rhino and is now a mover.

[00:01:27]He's really immature at the beginning of the story. He's never really taken responsibility for his actions and you know, he's solved a lot of things with his fists. I am not okay. None of this is okay. Dory is the longest living member here at New Hyde. Ta-da!

[00:01:44]>> [laughter] [panting] >> Is there madness there? Did the madness come on while she was there for over 30 years or is she just essentially brilliant and special?

[00:01:58]She's also the connective tissue that's trying to keep everybody safe. So you think you're protecting us? More than you know. More than I care to explain.

[00:02:10]She tries to show everyone the ropes but in doing that she's somewhat frightening because she seems to be suggesting to most people who walk through those doors you're never getting out. Who is the real enemy? Can they even recognize who's pulling the strings? In a place like a mental institution, one of the things you do get to play with is that question of like what is reality? Is this really happening or is this just the perceptions of the patients? I'm seeing things. Maybe I wasn't in it.

[00:02:39]The only thing you're at risk of losing in here is your soul. This is a story that I've been working on with Victor for a few years at this point. This originated as his novel. Devil in Silver, both the novel and the show, is an incredibly personal story for me. The heart of the story is based on spending a lifetime of visiting various family members in and out of the mental hospitals of New York City. I want people to understand that this story is coming from a place that is full of love and me wanting to sort of create stories that showed their humanity [music] even in the midst of a place as horrifying as this. You didn't listen and now it's too late. You long to see these people get out. You root for them.

[00:03:26]>> You can't go down there. And you're saying yes, yes, go, GO. FATHER, SON, AND HOLY GHOST. FATHER, [screaming] SON, AND HOLY GHOST.

[00:03:35]>> Our evil in our show gets [music] down into the mosh pit with our characters and fights with them and there will be a winner and there will be a reckoning.
