Design & Lifestyle: The Influence of Travel In Our Homes - Episode 4 - 17th / 18th Century BaroqueAñadido:
I'm Tashik Hickman Piaza, founder and principal designer of home and lifestyle branded by Design. And whenever I'm not designing and beautifying spaces, either in my own home or in a client's home, my favorite pastime is to travel. I'm so inspired by all of my travels and I love to bring all of that inspiration from my travels right back into my home as I firmly believe a person's home should be a true reflection and extension of their personal taste and style with beautiful collected pieces that complement who they are, what their passions and interests are and ultimately what makes them feel good. Both traveling and designing makes me feel absolutely amazing, but simply being creative makes me feel even more wonderful. In my latest series, the influence of travel in our homes, I'm excited to show you all some of the stunning pieces I've collected over the years and designed and styled in my home. But more than anything, I'm super excited to share travel memories with you of exactly which country or continent has inspired me to purchase those pieces. If you've never believed in the power of travel and how it truly connects to design and inspires us all, I'm ready to both inspire you and also make you a believer.
So, I'm excited to tell y'all what I'm getting ready to tell y'all.
17th 18th century Baroque style frame design is my jam. This, ladies and gentlemen, this is Baroque style frame design. So Baroque and I go together real bad. Just like me and gold go together real bad. Baroque style frame design and I go together really, really bad. So I was first exposed to Baroque style frame design from my mother um at a very young age. Um maybe I would say maybe as early as grade school that I can remember. My mom had the most gorgeous Baroque style mirror in our front room. You know, back in the day, you didn't call a living room a living room. We called it a front room. So, it was this gorgeous Baroque style mirror, and it was it it was a um she had it above my mom had it above our credenza in our formal living room or our front room. So as soon as you would walk into our home, guests would be greeted by this beautiful Baroque mirror. So it was a mirror that was framed in Baroque style like this. And the mirror was in gilded gold. It had the most gorgeous um Cherokee angels on each side, left and right. And it was just a beautiful mirror. Very, very European. And just it was a a a statement piece. you know, we all have, you know, one thing or a few things if you're like me, which most designers and decorators, we have quite a few statement pieces in our home, but it was definitely my mom's statement piece in her front room. When you first walked in that door and you saw that gorgeous baroque frame mirror, it just it it got your attention right away. It commanded your attention cuz it was so beautiful. So that was my very first introduction into Baroque style frame design and it stayed with me and I never realized that as an adult um I would love Baroque style frame as as much as my mom did. So when I saw this particular tray, this is a mirror tray.
I saw this in Niche Modern Home, another um boutique that I shop in all the time on my side of the lake, the Northshore.
They had this frame and I fell in love with it. One of the things that I love so much about Baroque is the ornate detail. So Baroque basically is it's very ornate. It's very detailed. It's very opulent.
Or in short, Baroque is just basically fancy. That's really what it is. Baroque is extravagant and fancy and we know if I'm nothing else, I'm very fancy. Okay, so um I just fell in love with this. I thought it was so beautiful. Um it reminded me so much of again some of my travels to Europe. Um and it brought me it really brought me back to my childhood. It really did. It made me think so much of the beautiful Baroque frame mirror that my mom had in our living room. and um you know just just the memories of how gorgeous that mirror was, you know, when we first walked into our house. But it definitely reminded me so much of all of the beautiful Baroque style frames that I've seen um in mainly in Italy. I will say that for sure. I've seen Baroque in other places, too. I definitely have seen it in Greece. Um, but there's so much Baroque all over Italy. And most of Baroque frames, not all. Some of them are painted in different colors. You don't always have to do Baroque in gold. It can be in black, it can be in silver, it can be in silver leaf. But y'all know gold is my jam. I told y'all earlier that I really believe that there may be some Italian in my bloodline because we know them Italians, they really, really love their gold. And I really wouldn't be surprised because I'm from New Orleans and you know New Orleans, we're mixed with a whole gumbo of stuff down here. There's French in my bloodline for sure. So I would not be surprised if Italian really is in my bloodline because come to think of it, New Orleans, after all, it was the second largest port of Italian immigrants after New York. So yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if there's some Italian in my bloodline. That will probably explain my love for gold so much. But back to this Baroque style um mirror tray. I bought this again from Niche Modern Home. It was so beautiful.
It reminded me of my childhood. It brought me back to memories of my childhood of my mom having that beautiful Baroque style frame in our home. And it truly reminded me of a lot of the museums and galleries. That's what I miss telling y'all. the museum.
So many of the museums and galleries that I've visited um during my travels to Europe, so many of them have all of the artwork framed in these gorgeous Baroque style frames. And every time I see them, I'm always like, my goodness, I I want to bring one home. So, I started collecting Baroque design probably maybe about 10 years ago, maybe a little bit longer. And I have all kind of different, you know, baroque accents throughout my home. But this is definitely one of my favorite Baroque features in my master bedroom is my gold my gold painted Baroque mirror tray that sits right on my bedside table. Um, I like to change this tray out every so often, season by season. Right now, since spring is coming in, y'all see me.
I I got changed for y'all. I'm I'm giving y'all black Martha Stewart right now. Okay. I'm I'm I'm in my you know my my blue and white striped dress is totally giving Martha Stewart right now.
But um and I wanted to kind of give that spring vibe. But I always change this tray out to different little things. I usually typically always will have some candles on my tray. Since we're coming into spring, I wanted to put out my spring fragrance. Um, I'm a Victor and Ralph girl. That's exactly what that perfume is. And yeah, I love this tree.
I love it so much. And again, it inspired me. I was inspired to buy it just from my fascination with 17 18th century Baroque. So, not only just my gold Baroque design frame or my Baroque style frame, mirror tray. I have so many different other European touches all throughout my home, but especially here in my bedroom. So, I'm going to show y'all a few more pieces that I have in my bedroom that have all been inspired by my travels. And basically, that inspiration is how I've decorated my home. But, let me show y'all a few more things I have in my bedroom. Come on.
Okay, so remember I was saying that I have more than just my Baroque design frame on my bedside table, right? I have quite a few European accents all throughout my home, but for the purpose of this video, we're in my master bedroom. So, these particular candle holders, they're baroque. They are baroque style candle holders, right? I want to hold this up so you can really see the detail, the ornamentation in it. And one of the things that I love so much about this candle holder, it's it's very rustic. It has like this kind of vintage look to it, but it's so rustic and distressed. And it's distressed, of course. And what color? What metallic?
Who am I? Gold finger. It is distressed and gold. So, it's a beautiful cream and gold rustic distress design. And it is Barack. Some people say Barack. I always say Baroque because I I believe that is the proper annunciation of it. Baroque.
And Baroque is not just in framing. Baroque can be in architectural features. Um it is essentially just a detailed ornamentation that is done to whether framing, decorative accents, architectural features. And it I love it. I told y'all at the beginning of this episode, Baroque and I go together real bad. And this is one of my other Baroque style accents that I have in my home. This being in my master bedroom.
Some other European accents that have all been inspired by my travels to Europe. Follow me camera. I'm going to show you. Okay, so I love love love to always have a bedside um tray on my bed, right? Y'all have seen it in many of my photo shoots, especially during my Christmas shoots during the holiday season. And I always change out my tray every time I'm changing out the bedding theme of my bedroom. So, for the purpose of this series, travel in design, showing you guys how travel influences the way we design and decorate our home, I thought it would be so appropriate and so cute to style this particular tree with some of my favorite postcards that I've collected over the years from a lot of my travels. I love to collect postcards.
It is like one of my favorite things to do. It is honestly one of the most expensive things to collect when you're traveling. Postcards are are typically not that expensive. It's a great gift to give to other people to to share with them places that you've traveled to, but I love to actually style and stage postcards in my home like on different surfaces. And for, you know, the purpose of my bed, I stage these postcards on the surface of my bedside tray.
Actually, not my bedside tray, but the tray on my bed. And some of the postcards on this tray is the famous the most famous Sandro Buchelli painting which is the painting of Venus. This is one of his most famous paintings and I have it in a postcard right here. This is Venus and Sandro Bachelli is a Renaissance artist of course hailing from Florence, Italy. And I also have not only my Sandro Bachelli postcard, I also have some postcards on here from Amalfi Coast because my husband and I spent our 10y year wedding anniversary in Amalfi Coast um a few years ago and I just thought this postcard was absolutely beautiful. This is actually the town of Pazatano, which is along the Maui coast. And one of the things that I even love even more on this tree, um, when you go to Italy, you see so many beautiful things and you have to stop at the Gucci Garden. The Guccio Gucci Garden. That is actually the proper um annunciation pronunciation of Mr. Gucci himself. Guccio Gucci. And when we went to Italy um for our 10y year anniversary, we went to the museum and went to see the Gucci garden. And these are our tickets and I saved them as a keepsake. So another way to be inspired by your travels, keep a lot of things, you know, like museums and galleries and places that you visit.
Don't throw away your memorabilia. You can use that even in your home to style.
For the purpose of today's show, I styled this on my tray because I wanted to show you guys and it works perfectly.
My theme right now for the season of spring in my bedroom. I wanted to keep things light and fresh and airy. I'm doing a lot of neutrals, creams, ivories with a little bit of taupe and chocolate and blush pink. And one more final thing I want to show y'all that's been inspired by my travels to Europe is this gorgeous olive jar vase. This reminded me so much. We talked about a vase earlier that reminded me of my travels to Greece. This one really reminded me of my travels to Greece because a lot of the Grecian vases, they're large like this, if not larger, and they come in like this whitewashed um tone and and they're crackled like this. I love anything in design that doesn't feel perfect. It's like imperfectly perfect. that that's really my jam. And I think that's one of the reasons why I love so much traveling um and and finding all of these beautifully imperfect um decorative accents and and architectural features. And I just find so much inspiration when I travel. And it is the exact reason why I want you all to be inspired, too.
