The Atapania Sutta, Duka Nipata, Patama Vagga 4. The Cooling of the Heart.
If remorse is a fire, then integrity is the cool mountain air.
The Buddha identifies the two safety deposits you can make right now to ensure that when you look back at your life, you feel only a deep tingling sense of peace.
The direct message.
The Buddha explains the two specific sources of non-remorse, the absence of burning.
Because, there are these two things that cause no remorse. What are the two?
Thinking, I have done what is good.
Realizing you have acted wholesomely and made the merit that protects your life.
Thinking, I have not done what is evil.
Realizing you have refrained from actions that are cruel, defiled, or harmful.
Since he thinks, I have done what is good, he does not feel remorse. Since he thinks, I have not done what is evil, he does not feel remorse. A person who has built this foundation lives happily, and at the breakup of the body, a good destination is expected.
The ancient verse.
Having abandoned bodily misconduct, verbal misconduct, mental misconduct, and whatever else is flawed, not having done what is unwholesome, having done much that is wholesome, at the breakup of the body, that wise one is reborn in heaven.
The human shift, the cooling deposit.
We often think that not being bad is enough, but the mind needs positive evidence of its own goodness to feel truly secure.
The problem.
Without the merit that protects, the mind remains fragile.
If you don't intentionally build goodness, you are left with a void that easily fills with anxiety.
This makes you burstable because you lack internal armor.
The shift. Practice the cooling deposit.
Every day make a conscious effort to do one beautiful thing.
It's not just about avoiding the evil, cruel, and defiled.
It's about actively creating a trail of light. When you look back, you don't see a void, you see a protector.
You aren't just safe, you are satisfied.
Nirvana insight.
Peace is the absence of friction.
By doing good and avoiding harm, you fireproof your heart and become unburstible.
Your power is consistent integrity.
Keep the record clean and the merit growing to ensure your mind remains a cool, radiant sanctuary that never knows the heat of regret.
