Scientists 3D Printed a Living Cornea — And It Restored Sight本站添加:
Scientists just 3D printed a living cornea and it actually worked. Right now, over 12 million people worldwide are waiting for a donor cornea. But for every 70 people who need one, only one donor cornea is available. Researchers at POSTECH in South Korea developed a bio-ink made from real corneal tissue and stem cells.
They used it to 3D print a cornea that mimics the natural collagen structure, giving it the transparency of a real human cornea. The key was controlling the shear stress during printing. That's what aligns the collagen fibrils to make it clear, not cloudy. The result is a biocompatible implant that matches how a real cornea is built. And in late 2025, a separate team completed the world's first successful human implant of a fully lab-grown 3D printed cornea, restoring sight to a blind patient.
But we're still early. This doesn't replace donor tissue yet. Clinical trials are ongoing. The goal? One donor cornea could eventually be used to print hundreds of identical copies. That would be a game-changer for millions waiting for sight. If you found this useful, subscribe and hit like. More science and tech breakdowns every week.
