Farmhouse DIY Decor Dupes You’ll Think Came From A Boutique | Spring + Summer Home DecorAdded:
I love that high-end farmhouse look, but I don't quite love the price tag. So, today I'm making DIY decor dupes that look like they came straight from a boutique.
Hey there, welcome to my channel. My name is Linda. I have some fun crafts for you today. So, what are we waiting for? Let's get started.
Let's head right on in to project number one. For this project, I found this idea on Pinterest of course you all, if you know me, you know I love that deep down rustic look, and this is what we're going to go for, but we'll Lindafy it up just a little bit. So, I have some wood boards here. I already cut them up cuz basically it was just cutting some straight lines, and it took me a while to figure out, you know, what measurements I wanted to do because I was just kind of measuring and cutting at the same time, but I think I got it figured out. So, on this first board, it is about 11 and 1/2 in tall and about 3 and 1/2 in in width. This is our bottom board. This is about 5 in tall, about 3 and 1/2 in in width, and our two side boards are about 5 and 3/4 in tall, and again 3 and 1/2 in width cuz they're all the same wood. And then this is our like our front board here, and it's about 5 and 1/2 in tall, about 3 and 1/2 in in width. Now, these two pieces I originally cut up, I will change later, but this first board is about 4 and 1/8 in long.
And then of course we got about 1 and 1/4 in wide, and then the second board is just like one line before 4 in, and again 1 and 1/4 in wide, and then this board is going to come in just about 5 in and 1 and 1/2 in. And basically we're going to take the back and hook it to the bottom, then two sides, and then our front piece. I wanted this longer, so it's about a quarter in longer on both sides. You could make it the exact same width as the side boards.
Now, we're going to use some Gorilla Glue to put this together, and I'm just marking on that backboard where my sideboards are going to reach in height on it. I'm adding a little glue at the bottom on the front cuz it's going to hit that bottom board and then up to where I marked on both sides where those sideboards are going to hit, and then I'll lay it down for a second.
And then we're going to get these two sideboards right at the bottom where it's going to contact the bottom board.
Just put it together.
>> [laughter] >> Like this and like this, and I'm not gluing the front board on. Squeeze it together. I'm just going to use the front board as a piece to help clamp to, but I'm not gluing it on yet. And then of course, I'm just going to clamp, you know, frontways and sideways and downways and however you can get this thing to clamp together, and I'm going to let it sit for like half an hour.
Right?
And then once that's done, now I'm going to go ahead and glue on the front board here.
Again, I just wanted it to look longer on the sides. Maybe it's a half inch on each side versus a quarter inch cuz I wanted it to kind of look more like a drawer in the front, and you'll see why in a minute. And then of course, I'm just clamping it together, and I forgot to mention the top point. Basically, I just found the center at the top, which is 1.75 inches, and then I cut like at a 50° angle down to make that point. Now, off camera, I added some nails. It didn't need nails. They're just decorative, okay? And then I'm taking this thingy that you guys always tell me and then I always forget the name of, and I'm drilling a hole in it because it's a birdhouse sort of, right? So, getting my hole in there, making a mess, got our little birdhouse down, and then I'm taking Dixie Belle chalk paint in the color Magnolia, and this is going to look funny at first, but it'll it'll look good when we're done. Just adding a little swoosh under our opening of our birdhouse, and then this piece is going on the front of our drawer or whatever you want to call it.
Adding a little swoosh of paint there, and then here's what I changed to for my roof just cuz I I it gave it a little whimsy. These look great. The color's great, but I wanted to go with this, you know, yardstick I cut up. I think I got it like Ace Hardware. But, it is a little light in color, so I'm taking, you know, Waverly antique wax. I've mixed it with water, and I'm just giving it a little bit of a stain.
Like I said, I just thought it made it look kind of cute, fun, whimsy.
There you go. And now, I'm just taking 120 grit sandpaper, and I'm just kind of sanding my little paint swooshes.
It just makes the things that are going over these painted areas kind of, you know, shine a little bit more. And then, of course, I'm going to distress those little rooftops a little bit. And then, for over our first painted swoosh, this comes from my scrapbooking days. It's a scrapbooking embellishment. Super cute.
You could just cut out like a vinyl or put a sticker there. But, you know, houses have house numbers, so birdhouses should, too. But, see how it just kind of that little swoosh behind it just lets it, you know, shine out in front a little bit. Then, I'm going to take my Quick Hold glue, and I'm going to glue down my little drawer front now. And then, add just again decorative nails here just so it ties in with the nails all around the rest of it. Cuz it's a rustic drawer, you know, that rustic drawers are always nailed together, right? And then, I'm going to come in with that same glue, and we're going to get our rooftop on. Off camera, I will again add a little decorative nail, just one on both sides of our little rooftops here. Nice and easy. I think it looks so super cute. And then, I'm taking black paint mixed with water and my fan brush, and I'm just going to add some splatters. Not a whole lot, but enough to just give it a little bit of texture, as I always tell you guys. And of course, as I always say and you're watching me do, I'm going like I did the front, the sides, the back, even inside of the little holder there. But, a super cute idea I found on Pinterest. I like how it turned out. Last little bit is some handle ideas I had. This at first, this would be cute, but I would have to have put it on first on the little, you know, plaque there on the front. But then I found this. It was half of one of those little latch, you know, locks and I think it's cute. So, I'm going to put it on there because I like the design of it. Again, adding some little nails there. I glued it on with that glue, added some nails and I'm going to just add a little touch of paint right there to kind of make those fit in. And now, of course, a couple of options. You can add a cute little candle like from Dollar Tree. You can add a plant like the original had. I'm going to use these.
I loved these from Dollar Tree, but it gives me more of a fall look, but, you know, I can change the flowers out. But for now, since it's spring or summer, I'm going to add these in. So, I'm just gluing in some floral crafty foam in the bottom of our little, quote unquote, bird's nest drawer. Couple of layers there. And then, of course, I want to add some excelsior. And this is just like the bottom of a bag, you know, you want to use it up. You don't want it to go to waste. Too short to do anything, but it takes up great space. And then I'll take a dowel because this kind of floral foam is really tough, but I could put my flowers in. And of course, I forgot to tell you what my flowers were from my Texas house from Walmart.
All right. And then I'm taking the longer, more newer excelsior. I just went to Hobby Lobby and bought like six bags of this stuff. Tucking it in and around, filling up all the space of the flowers. I'm even going to tuck a little bit in amongst the flowers, just a tiny bit. But once I do that, that makes this project complete. We'll take a look at the results at the end of the video, but now let's compare to our original design here, which I love because it's perfectly rustic, but mine is on the left. I don't know. What do you think?
Which do you like better?
Let's move right on in to project number two. Now, for this project, I saw this on Pinterest. These great like easels for pictures or something like that. And I'm like, "Ooh, I can make something sort of look like that." All right. So, that's what we're going for. So, these are the pieces I'm using. A dowel, this is just a long dowel. I am going to have to cut it down. I think it's like a half-inch dowel if I remember correctly.
A couple of those large-size tumbling tower blocks from Dollar Tree. And then you're going to need something for a base. Now, I chose the one on the left because it looked most like the picture, but I would urge you to maybe choose the one on the right. These are both from Dollar Tree. If you decide to add the element that I'm going to add, you need a little bit more stability of your block because the element I put on the front is quite heavy and it wants to lean forward. So, I'm going to have to end up using another base at the bottom, but I'll do that off camera. You guys won't see it. You'll just see what it looks like with the smaller base. But again, go with the larger base if you add like the heavy element that we're going to add later. All right, and then you're going to need I chose two of these. They're these wood planks also from Dollar Tree. You could use one, but I chose to use two. You'll see why. And then this come from Arteza. Those Arteza supplies. I think it's like an 8 by 8.
You can use a picture frame or whatever, but you're going to need something wide enough that those tumbling tower blocks are going to fit at the top, okay? And you'll see why in a minute. So, here I am. I originally cut it down to about 18 in, but then I ended up cutting about another 3 in off. So, about 15 in dowel.
You can make it as long as you want. And then it's time to paint. So, I'm going to use my uh Dixie Belle Paint in the color caviar.
Just a fancy name for a black paint because the original picture all that easel was all black. So, I'm just going black on everything, of course.
Yeah, I think this turned out super cute, but letting you know, you might want to make a few changes. If you don't use the heavy element like I did, don't got to worry about it. Dixie Belle chalk paint.
You're like, "What are you talking about?" We'll get to it in a minute.
Dixie Belle chalk paint in the color magnolia for our main art piece here.
Just kind of showing you I'm painting everything front, back, sides because I'm not going to cover any of this up.
The painting is really going to be the thing that, you know, shines cuz normally y'all know I cover a lot of it up and just make sure the back sides are pretty, but not this one because the original didn't do that and I actually kind of liked it that way. I will do couple of coats of everything and then I am coming in distressing, but it's very, very light. Just kind of giving it a little bit of a chalky look, but you don't have to do that if you don't want to, but just kind of chalking up that paint because it does kind of chalk up nicely because hence the chalk paint.
All right, there you go.
>> [laughter] >> I had to say it. If you are looking for a source for Dixie Belle chalk paint, as I always say when I use this, I do have a link down in my description box. If you're a first-time buyer, there is a 10% off coupon. If you are local in the area, the uh brick-and-mortar store address will be there as well. The prices are very comparable for paint and she has lots more other things in store like IOD transfers and stamps and all that sort of stuff. Okay, so for my heavy object I keep telling you about, here it is. It's one of those white farmhouse-looking knobs from Hobby Lobby. As you can see, I just kind of painted it off camera nice pale pink, but it is so heavy because it's made of like, you know, iron or whatever that is. So, it tends to want to make my sign to tip forward. So, kind of keep that in mind if you want to go this route and you choose a little knob, if it's lightweight, you're probably okay, but if it's really heavy, you're going to want that bigger base, okay? And then now, of course, I'm just distressing it up slightly and I painted it a pale pink because it matches a little bit of the color in the picture I'm going to use.
All right, so now I'm taking my two blocks and I'm putting them together just using some Fabri-Tac glue, although later you'll see me pull it back apart for a minute. I've pre-drilled a hole in the base that fits the size of my dowel, of course. You may want to screw it up from the bottom into the dowel. You may want to use a screw. I will probably do that as well, but my glue is holding nicely. So, I'm just getting my dowel inside of the base, and now here is our large tumbling tower block. You want to set it at the back of your project on the top like this. All right, just like that. So, it's flush with the backside, whatever you're using. All right, so I'm going to glue the first one on using a combination of my glues here. I'll let that sit, and then we'll glue the bottom one on in a minute, and I'm making sure, of course, it's centered from side to side. This is going to act like the little clamps that are on the original picture. This is an Etsy printable. I'll have links down in the description box.
I actually downloaded three, but I chose to use this one, and I sewed around it.
Just put some cardstock on the back, sewed around it to make it cute, and then I'm taking the open end of my scissor blades, and I'm scraping around our little picture here just to make it look rustic, and it's just printed onto like regular copy paper, and then I'm gluing it to the front of our little wood piece from Dollar Tree. And as you can see, I cut my picture just a little bit shorter, about a half inch shorter all the way around, so that that wood piece looks like a little framing around the photo. Now, these are called plastic cable clamps.
They're 3/8 inch size cuz they match my wood dowel, which I guess is 3/8 inch.
Did I say a half inch earlier? It's 3/8 inch.
>> [laughter] >> And these are just going to help us clamp our dowel to our main photo piece, and then I'm using a little bit of hemp cord here cuz it's a lot lighter than just twine. All right, now I'm going and gluing my bottom piece to the bottom of our picture area, making sure it's even with the top piece we glued on earlier, our little {quote} {unquote} clamps. And then now I'm just gluing on the bottom half of our little knob there, and then I go to glue this on, and I'll show you what's happening here. Obviously, I'm going to set it aside for a minute, and I'm laying my top knob on there, and here's where I'm using the hemp twine. I want to cut it down to size cuz I want my little picture to look like it's hanging from the knob, obviously. So, when I've got my hemp cord the right size, I'm going to glue my top part of my knob in. And I originally glued the string down onto the frame itself, and then I laid the picture on top, but it looked too slanted from the knob to underneath the picture. All right? And you can kind of see that. I froze here for a minute. I didn't like that, so I took my picture apart, the two pieces of, you know, Dollar Tree wood, and I'm gluing down that string between the two pieces of wood. Now, the string sets up a little bit, so you I've got some cardboard here over to the left. I'm painting black around the edges in case it's seen from the sides of this project, and I'm laying those down, and they are the tallness of the string. And then those will make our area that wood piece underneath level to re-glue our bird back on top. Now, you don't have to add the cardboard, that's just me. I want it nice and level. Okay, now what I'm doing here, I had originally copied the bird a couple of times, and I put it on the scrapbook paper, and I didn't really like it cuz it looked too busy.
So, I cut that bird out to lay it over the top of the original bird, so as I splattered, my bird wouldn't get covered with the splatters. I didn't mind stuff around it, but I wanted my bird nice and clean. All right? So, I just kind of laid that there. All right, now once that's all everything is dry, it's time to get this whole ensemble onto that skinny little dowel. So, here I am. What I did is I did make the bottom a little longer. I went about 4 in. This is showing about 3 and 1/2, and then the top part of the dowel that's going to stick out is a little bit shorter. And then here's our little clamps. I'm just sliding them down onto the dowel here.
And it's designed with a flat side, so, you know, one screw's going to go one way, and one screw is going to go another way, of course. And then I'm just using my ruler here to get those into position. And then what I did is I laid it down here, and off camera, I glued those down at first. I used my quick hold glue on the flat part, not where the screw is, but the flat part so that it sets. And then I pre-drilled my holes first, and I You got to make sure that the front of your sign is perfectly straight with the bottom of your stand.
Does that make sense? Cuz when you start to screw these in as I'm doing, it likes to make your picture area maybe want to just turn off kilter a little bit. So, just kind of pay attention to that, but once you screw them in, that makes this project complete. We'll take a look at the results at the end of the video. But for now, my project is on the left, the other one is on the right. I don't know.
What do you think?
Let's move into our last project, number three. Here's our inspiration. Again, found this on Pinterest. I love it. I wanted to do a bird on this one like this, but I was like, I already did a bird in the last project, so we're going with something else. But here's what it looks like, so adorable. I found this picture {slash} frame at Hobby Lobby.
You can hang it, or of course use it as a picture, all right? But not real crazy about the coloring, so that's easy. I'll use Dixie Belle Chalk Paint again in the color Magnolia, and I'll paint everything up. I'll do I think this took about three coats to cover it all up, but it looks really pretty, gives it that real beautiful kind of farmhouse finish to it, maybe even a little bit shabby, maybe a little bit country, I don't know. And why not, since we're using descriptive words, it's a little bit rustic, too. All right? So, again, about three coats this, and then I thought I was filming this next part, but I wasn't. I Cut a piece of cardstock the exact size of the frame behind it, and then I wanted to double layer it with this paper here.
So, I cut it about a half inch smaller, so with the cardstock behind it, it'll kind of look like it has a little framing on its own. And then, of course, as you see here, taking the open into my scissor blades and kind of scraping around the edges to give it our rustic look, huh? And then, I was too lazy to reach to the left to grab my Tim Holtz tea dye ink, so I just used a little ink that was already on the dauber and just added a little halo around the edges there and then I'm going to glue this onto that cardstock that I cut off camera.
There we go and then I'm going to sew around the edges here and then the next frame you'll see it all sewn. Here it is. Kind of gives us that little warmth of a country look, I think.
Yeah, I could have used a little darker ink, >> [laughter] >> but that's all right. Like I said, I was too lazy. Now I'm taking 120 grit sandpaper and I'm sanding along all the sharp edges of our frame. I love how the gold pops up underneath. It gives it just a little bit of that kind of ritzy glitzy look, but not be so in your face from the previous gold. I like gold, but that I'm sorry, my opinion that was not pretty. That's what it looks like all distressed up. I think it now looks fabulous and now we're going to head on to the rub-ons I used. I found these on Amazon. They're really pretty, they're really thick, but they don't look cartoony or anything. They have great coloring and I'm just going to use a single rose right down the center. Now I'm putting this down onto my paper, of course.
Rubbing it down was like really quick.
These went on really easy and I did speed this up a little bit, but when I looked at my original timing, you can see kind of anyway how slow I am pulling it up at a slant, right? And then I'm holding down the rub-on with the the the smoothing tool to get your rub-on down.
And it took me about a minute and 15 seconds. That is how slow I'm peeling because this is the stickiest of sticky to lay the transfer down and I don't want it to rip my paper. If you should pick one of these up, I'll have the link down below in my description box, but they're just beautiful and vibrant. I've not worked with this brand before. I really like it.
All right, good. We got that all off and now my little transfer sheet that I put the rub-on down with, I could see the indents on it, so I'm cutting it out to make a mask over the flower and doing like we did on the bird and just taking the black paint mixed with water again and adding a few splatters, not too many. I don't want it like in your face.
I just want it there settled, but again to give it the texture and here's what that looks like, just a little bit all the way around.
All right, and then I started gluing the original picture onto the back of the frame.
All right, and then I added glue here and I started to glue our design down. I also added some glue right in the corner or so if how you want to say it of the round frame. Then here I am laying that down, but then I decided nope, I want to put this part in first to make sure I have it nice and straight with the hanger and then I put the easel part back down. That was just my preference.
But once I do that, that makes this project easy, complete, and beautiful.
Let's take a look at the comparison. I know your eye goes right to the bird, right? I again, I would have done a bird, but we already did a bird, so I went with the flower. If you weren't looking at the bird on the right, you would love the flower. But which one do you like best?
>> [music] >> So I hope you enjoyed all of these projects today. I love how they turned out and you know what's funny, my favorite is this frame right here because it's just so simplistic in design and so easy to make and it just it's so pretty. I don't know. That's my favorite. Leave me a comment down below and let me know which one is your favorite. Please give this video a thumbs up. If you feel like pressing that hype button, you go right ahead. I thank you very much for that.
All of these things really help my channel to grow. And if you walked in here for the first time and just checking things out, you're digging what you saw, make sure before you click off, you hit that subscribe button and notification bell so you don't miss out on another project from me.
Now, before I go, I'm going to leave [music] you with one final thought.
You are here in this time for a reason.
You're facing certain challenges [music] because you are stronger than you realize. This may sound clichéd, but it should be a truth deeply ingrained in your heart [music] because with God, you are never alone in your strength. As a child of the Most High, you possess the power of the [music] Blessed Trinity to support you. Remember the story in the book of Exodus chapter [music] 17 in the Bible. Moses held up his hands with his staff during a battle between the Israelites [music] and the Amalekites.
As long as his arms were raised, the Israelites emerged victorious.
>> [music] >> However, when his arms grew tired and he dropped them, the Amalekites gained the upper hand.
>> [music] >> When he could no longer rely on himself, God intervened with Aaron and Hur.
Book of Exodus chapter 17 verse 12. But Moses' hands were heavy and he grew tired. So they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Then Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side and one on the other side. So it was that his hands were steady until the sun set.
No matter what lies ahead, picture this verse from Exodus. Let your mind flip the script slightly so you don't fear what's before you. Just like Moses, you are seated on a rock, also known as the rock of God, with Aaron and Hur, also known as Jesus and the Holy Spirit, assisting you, one on one side and one on the [music] other.
As discussed earlier, the power of the Blessed Trinity holds you up so you don't need to fear what's ahead. God will always be your advocate, your shield, and your [music] refuge. He will never abandon you and he will always defend you against the enemy. The book of 2 Chronicles chapter 16 verse 9a, "For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro [music] throughout the earth so that he may support those whose heart is completely his."
God will equip you with any weapon you need to face any [music] giant, endure the challenge, and walk away victorious because Jesus has already won the battle for you. He knows exactly what you need so you can lean on his rock for support because [music] his strength will never waver.
You are being held up by a far greater power than the opposition you may be facing.
>> [music] >> So, don't carry the weight of any challenge on your own. Trust that the outcome >> [music] >> rests in God's hands. Shift your focus from the obstacle to the greatness of God. The book of Deuteronomy chapter 20 verse 4 says, "For the Lord your God is he who goes with you >> [music] >> to fight for you against your enemies to save you."
Relying on God is a powerful act of faith and with his strength no obstacle is insurmountable. So, don't be [music] afraid.
Be still and know that the battle belongs to God. The book of Exodus chapter 14 verse 14, "The Lord will fight for you while you only need to keep silent and remain calm."
I thank you for sharing your time with me and I'll talk with you again soon.
Bye.
