Michigan Severe Weather Briefing - July 20th, 2026

Kind of a special afternoon update for July 20th, 2026. Again, if you're just joining in, feel free to smash that like button and of course, hit the share button as well. Share this with your friends and family that may need the information.
This is going to be a severe weather briefing for the entire state of Michigan. Technically speaking, as the entire state of Michigan is in some sort of severe risk this afternoon through the overnight hours into tomorrow morning, we do have a couple of supercells expected to pop up sometime this afternoon, eventually congealing into a line. We'll talk about that here in just a second. But again, welcome in everyone. Hopefully my volume is okay.

Appreciate it. Alrighty, welcome in uh Laura, Dee, Julie, Ann, Fun Times, a lot of you guys who are just first in here. Thank you guys for tuning in. Also got Han and Hannah and Caroline and Ray and Blake. I can't name everyone, but everyone's kind of popping in right now.
But again, welcome in. We're going to go over uh the current ingredients and of course what is projected to be modeled over the coming hours. So, first and foremost, the Storm Prediction Center has upgraded the tornado probabilities. You'll see it here on the center of your screen. They actually did add a 10% hatched risk for portions of Goic and Iron counties in the upper peninsula. Again, that is a 10 to 14% chance that goes along kind of with what we already have out there for an 11 to 20% chance of tornadoes kind of along that Minnesota Wisconsin or Michigan Wisconsin border, excuse me.
Um, so they have increased their confidence in strong tornadoes today across the region. The main hazards though are going to be still damaging winds as you can see here from the storm prediction center. They do have a 30% hatch across much of the western and central portions of the upper peninsula and of course hail also on the high-end range.
They do have the hatching for hailstones upwards around 2 in in diameter as well.
So uh again all hazards on the table this afternoon. This is a severe weather episode that could be occurring here within the next several hours. As early as 4:00 is what we're having. This is our severe weather outlook that we released earlier this morning. If you guys missed it, it was released on our page at 8 a.m. Feel free to go back to that post. Like and share that post with your friends and family that may be impacted. Even if you're not in the level four zone tonight, you got to understand that there is still a severe risk across the entire state. It just depends on what your odds of seeing severe weather are if a storm impacts your area. So, for example, if you're down here in southeast Michigan, you're only in a level one risk. That's not bad. However, you have to look at what is allowing that one per that level one risk to be issued. And if you flip through all the hazards, you'll notice it is just primarily for damaging wind.
So, there's a 1 to 4% chance that if you get a storm down in the blue zone, for example, it will produce damaging wind.
So, it's a low chance, but it's not completely zero. And even down here in the tippy I wouldn't say top tippy bottom I guess you could say of Monroe County there's a tight tiny little sliver of uh less than 1% especially from Monroe and Luna Pier. That's about it. So again very far eastern Monroe County is like the only place that really is not expected to see severe weather because the odds are very low.
But again as you'll notice over a 1% chance or greater all the way up to a 64% chance of damaging winds specifically today across the region.
large hail, 15 to 34% chance. That's originally with the supercells are expected to pop up. And of course, our tornado risk is somewhat similar where we do have that yellow zone kind of along that Minnesota. I said it again, Michigan, Wisconsin. Boy, we've been saying Minnesota a lot lately because of all the wildfires up there. Um, but again, it's an allhazardous today. We'll go ahead and dive into the model runs.
Now, actually, I'm going to go ahead and go first into MEO because this is something that is happening in real time. So, this is what we use for our cheat code when we're out here. Uh oh, come on now.
There we go. Uh just want to full screen a little more here. This is our cheat code for ingredients that are expected out there. We'll go ahead and go into surface based cape. So this is total instability. We talk about our ingredients. So we haven't said it in a while, but slim. We always talk about slim, sheer, lift, instability, moisture. Best way to remember is slim shady aka Eminem. You got your four main ingredients. Shear is spin.
Excuse me. L is lift, I is instability, and M is moisture. And so we'll take a look at our I component first because this is the main fuel. You'll notice that it is already recovering in the wake of those warning storms. There's already values of 2500 in the western UP as it stands and extending all the way over to the Marquette region. There's already a thousand jewels. Now, you'll notice with all of these light blue lines on there, you see those big negative numbers 200, -250,300, 350. That's all the capping inversion. It's also in place down here in the lower peninsula as well. Um, again, we look for numbers that are minus 50 or higher. So, no cap would be zero, which means the atmosphere is completely uncapped. Storms are ready to fire up. If you have a cap on the atmosphere, that means well, storms are not likely to fire or they're going to be very discreet in nature. So, even with a tiny cap out there right now, you can still get storms in the upper peninsula. So, we do have elevated storms above the capping inversion actually firing across uh Lake Superior right now and those are producing a little bit of a hail risk with those intense lapse rates out there. So, that's the eye component. Plenty of fuel coming in. If I fast forward this into the next 2 to 4 to 6 hours, you'll notice that that really starts to peak and gets upwards of around 4,000 jewels of cape. Again, the going rate for severe weather is around a thousand. So, we'll have four times the amount today for severe weather. We'll also take a look at other source of cape called downdraft cape. This is the fuel really needed for down bursts to occur. So damaging winds and the going rate for this is the maroon zone. So really anything over a,000 in the mar in the maroon is what you'll need for these intense downbursts to occur. And you'll notice already uh these values up around 1100 1200 even 1300 inching into the Ironwood area. Those values will continue to move off to the east with time. And you'll notice that some of that DK does move into lower Michigan overnight. That is what's going to be potentially fueling the line of damaging winds that would eventually cross Lake Michigan if it can stay together into the lower pins overnight through 4:00 a.m. So this Dcape component will be watching very very closely behind the scenes. Again, this is our cheat code that we use to look at the atmosphere in real time. You notice across Lower Peninsula right now, a lot of those numbers 200 to 400. Upper peninsula, it's cranking out there at 11 to 1200.
So that is something to keep in mind.
We'll also talk about our spin in the atmosphere. So, we go over to shear.
Now, our S component again, slim, shear, lift, instability, moisture. We just talked about the I, we're going to go over to the S. Particularly in the lowest level of the atmosphere, there's a lot of low level spin today. So, in the lowest kilometer of the atmosphere, uh you'll notice that that is going to be above 100. Again, really anything over 100 to 150 is the going rate for very decent low-level spin. And that as you m fast forward it into the future 2 4 hours 6 hours out you'll notice a lot of those values around 150. So sufficient spin. It's not the most intense spin that we've seen this year in Michigan but it's enough to get things spinning. And if we go up to the 0 to3 kilometer holicity. There we go. I can't fast forward it but you can see already that there's the going rate is kind of the same here. You want about 150 to 200 uh for your 0 to3 spin. And you notice your values here of 200, 250, and 300 are already ongoing out there. So, it's just a matter of time if a storm fires in that environment. There will be plenty of spin out there to go around.
So, unfortunately, it can't fast forward into the future on this one.
But again, you can already see a decent amount of spin out there. We'll also take a look at our lifted indices that should be on here.
It's been a while since I've actually used it on I think Mezo. I guess I'll skip that. We'll go over to moisture then our precipitable water. Plenty of moisture out there. You can see Pwatt values. Precipitable water is what's the full name for it. Um decent rainfall rates expected with any updrafts. Again, some minor flooding is possible out there today. We could see isolated spots of two to three inches of rain, especially when storms train over the same area. Uh wouldn't be surprised if we got 3 in or greater in some spots.
But those PY values, unfortunately, can't fast forward those out on here.
Here we'll go over to the model runs if we want to see them. Um, but again, already up around 1.5. Really, anything over one is decent enough as you can see here. Uh, it starts to get into the green zone. We get to one. So, plenty of moisture out there, plenty of shear, plenty of instability, and I for I really honestly forgot where the lift indices are on here. There's plenty of lift out there. There's what we call a short wave moving through the area. You can actually see it on this map here. If I could draw a line, if you can if you guys can see my mouse up here at the top left of the screen, there's this trough right here where it kind of makes that smiley face shape. That is your source of lift. And so, as that smiley face moves into the region, it's not going to be so smiley anymore because it's going to be producing that severe weather. And so, as that digs into the upper Great Lakes, that'll fire off storms in this most favorable environment. We're already starting to see a couple of these showers popping up in Minnesota.
So, as it moves out, you can see there you go. So there's your smiley face digging into the region. The storm is firing up right along that smiley face there in the background. So that shortwave trough is what we call it is your source of lift. So we do have plenty of shear. We have I I would say enough shear to get tornadoes. We have lift which is your shortwave trough. You have instability which is four times the allotted values.
And of course you have moisture which is uh one and a half times the allotted values. So we have all the components there putting it all together all of those ingredients. We'll take a look at the supercell composite first and foremost. So this is the chance of supercells. This is just a g general number that is given based [snorts] on all those ingredients I just went through. So right now the current supercell composite is eight. Really anything over two is impressive. And this number will continue to uh maintain itself and even get up towards maybe 12 as the evening goes on. And again that's pretty impressive. We also have our STP our significant tornado perimeter which is again for of course tornadoes. uh and that will continue to kind of uptick as the evening goes on. Again, really anything over one, I would say, is a decent amount for tornado tornatic weather. And at the current time, that number gets up around three. So, there's a decent chance out there for tornadoes today.
Again, this already, this is as it stands right now, there's already a two.
And so, it's just a matter of time before that short wave that's up there to the north digs into the region and starts firing off cells somewhere across the western upper. can't quite pinpoint it yet, but this is now where we get to go over to the model runs and play it hour by hour. So, we'll start off with the Empass RFS. As of 2:00, uh you can see over here on the uh side of the state, this is a little bit displaced uh because again, these storms have they're a little bit more on Lake Superior right now, but they are expected to continue off to the southeast. And it does have cells already popping up. I'd have to check the radar right now. I don't know if it's popped up yet.
>> No, there's nothing popped up just yet.
>> Nothing's popped up yet. But the Empas RFS has storms firing here as early as 2:30, which would be like right now. Um, and 3:00, 4:00 really starts to congeal into supercells. Kind of a multi-ellular line around 5, 6, and then 7. More cells and a secondary line firing after that.
8:00. Here's 9:00 now. Come on. Okay, I guess I won't use the arrow keys.
10:00, 11:00, 12:00. And this one has a lot less moving into the lower peninsula, Michigan on our latest run here as of 12Z this a uh this morning, which is when it was released. Uh and so again, our main concern will be the upper peninsula and northern lower.
We'll go ahead and check out the RFS as or sorry, HR next.
We'll go with the 16 16Z here. So, this has cells popping up. Uh this is going to be five o'clock, 6 o'clock, 7 o'clock. This is kind of the time frame that we kind of expected coming into today or pops up around and after four.
Again, this is going back. There's five, six, 7, 8, 9, 10:00 and it really starts to congeal into that damaging wind line.
Again, when you get these individual pink splotches on radar, there's your individual supercells. In fact, you can actually kind of it's it's weird to see it even on the HR run. Even though it's, you know, 1 kilometer uh spacing, there is still you can see these hooks on radar which are signs of supercellular storms. And so those are the storms to watch for an initial hail and tornado threat. And once these cells congeal to multisellular into eventually this one big line segment, that's where we start to transition from a hail and tornado risk over to a damaging wind risk. And that's what's primarily going to be leading the way as this line barrels into northwest lower. Uh going back timing here, there's eight. Sorry, I'll zoom out here a little bit. Uh 7 8 9 10 o'clock 11 o'clock. A little bit of a later arrival time there. Midnight 1 2 and again there is a possibility that if that trough is able to kind of maintain the instability in the area, uh we could see this line of storms make it all the way over to the southeast corner of the state. But again, this is 1:00 a.m. 2 a.m. 3:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. So, as mentioned, that 4 to 4 time frame today is what we'll be watching. And so, uh, once these storms get warned, we may not be offline for, uh, 8 to 12 hours. I was telling Ryan this morning, we may need like a Red Bull or some sort of additional [laughter] fuel source to get through tonight because this could be a a long night if it plays out like the HR is showing.
Now, again, remember the MPASS was a little more kind of reserved, as you could say, uh, for the lower peninsula.
the RFSA, which is kind of a branch off of the empast, uh, shows these cells popping up right at four. So, this is kind of in line with what we've been saying for timing. And, uh, this honestly is not a good look. I don't like to say this all the time, but that is a line of multi-ells, likely supercells embedded within the line. Um, again, that would be a pretty significant tornado and hail threat if that maintains itself. Now, again, the for those who don't know, the RFS does go a little overboard in terms of its convection, in terms of the size. Uh, so the cells will likely not be this big, but again, still some pretty decent sized supercells. A secondary line forming. Here's 7:00, 8:00, 9:00, 10:00.
And again, it's a big question mark as to whether or not it's very conditional as to whether or not these storms can survive. But here's 11:00 tonight, midnight, 1 2 3, and then 4:00 a.m. as mentioned, leaving the state. And then of course here comes your lake effect rain into the state for Tuesday which will be some sort of a swing in conditions compared to what we've been experiencing over the last week. We had smoke, we had hot temperatures, and now we're going onto the opposite spectrum where we have lake effect rain moving in. So it's uh quite the story, quite the development. And again, those were your model runs here over the next couple hours. Still expecting around 4:00 to be the start time. So uh pretty soon here we'll probably hop off. Um, also again watching on radar those lines of storms that are currently north of Municing. If I go ahead and take my radar here real quick.
There we go. You can see storms just offshore north of Elder County kind of heading towards the Grand Marray area.
Uh, at the current time these are special marine warned for 40 knots of wind and small hail. So that's equivalent to about 45 to 50 m 50 mph wind.
And so we'll likely maybe see some statements move in and maybe some borderline severe warnings. We'll see.
But once we start once we get a first severe warning in, we may be live for a while. So we're going to go ahead and probably wrap up this briefing very soon. Uh Ryan, is there anything else you want me to show off on the model runs that I haven't covered?
>> No, you got it pretty well covered there. If you want to go back to the LI under the mess scale, it's under multiparameter. Um you can find it there. But otherwise, no, that's that's all I got to share.
Okay, let me see if I can find that multiparameter. H most >> choice down. There you go.
>> Got it. There's a different one that's without the multiparameter somewhere.
I just don't remember where it's at.
If you find it, let me know. [laughter] Um but here's your most unstable lifted indices. Uh yeah, minus 7 to minus 8.
Again, the lower the number in terms of a lifted indicy, the better the lift.
Again, you think about it's it's opposite. So it's it's less pressure on the atmosphere. So it's a lot the word I'm looking for here is buoyancy. Uh there's it's a lot more buoyant out there. So these chemus clouds once they start to form, they just blossom up like crazy. So again, values of we really look for the orange.
So the minus 6 and lower. So - 7, - 8, even - 9 trying to crawl in there uh to the upper peninsula. Even over here in Minnesota, you have -12 as a lifted indicy. That's pretty impressive. Uh so no absence of lift, we'll say out there for sure. Um I do notice that that first line of storms that we're watching right now on Lake Superior is right on the cusp of the strongest of the ingredients. So it's going to be very borderline as this line continues over towards Sue St. Maria.
whether or not it's going to be severe or not because again most of the strongest ingredients right now as going back to the supercell composite are just off to the west where that trough is going to start digging in. So um yeah so we do have as mentioned lot of lift out there. So shear lift instability moisture check marks check mark boxes on all of those ingredients today. And really the only fail mode would be any cloud cover limiting instability. But at the current time our instability or surface base instability those values up around 3,000 already and it's becoming uncapped. So we'll likely see some strong to significant severe thunderstorms here within the next hour or two.
So, if you know anybody in uh the upper peninsula tonight, I would definitely be sharing the word sharing this briefing either word of mouth or just telling them, hey, you know, we're watching tonight. Um again, if you need us a source of severe weather coverage, we're going to be here tracking these storms from beginning to end like we always do. So, um, don't let the sun I haven't looked at the Norway cam in a little bit, but I'm sure that Norway cam is probably bright and sunny right now or getting there across the region. And if not, that's going to be inhibitor uh in the area. So, actually, I can look at it right now. I'll go ahead and uh check me on the scenes. Oh, yeah. Plenty of sunlight out there.
Then again, Norway is going to be kind of in that main spot today for tornadic weather if anything. So, again, here's the live look at top Norway Mountain Ski Resort. The sun and the haze is very evident out there at the current time.
Don't let the sun deceive you though.
That sun is cooking the atmosphere uh very much today. And again, we we are using a little bit of heightened wording because of the ingredients that are on the table. Again, it's check marks for everything. And so, you do not want to take uh these storms lightly. These will bring down plenty of trees and power lines today, especially when you get those down burst winds and perhaps a couple tornadoes. So, we'll see. Again, the best chances for severity, of course, are going to be in Wisconsin, but some of those ingredients are best across the Iron, Dickinson, Marquette, Baraga, Monomin, Delta, and Elder County regions, perhaps even over into Gogg, a Nagen, and H Hotton counties as well, depending on whether or not we can see initiation further west or further east.

Yeah, again, just we're in the middle of tourism season up here in the Upper Peninsula. Again, you don't know who you're going to be helping if you hit that like button. Again, it pushes it out to everyone in the algorithm that is in the state of Michigan at the time.
So, if you haven't hit that like button, feel free to do so. So, you may be saving a life or some of someone who may be camping out there uh this evening.
And again, if you have any community groups you want to share this information with, uh maybe not this briefing, but go back and um share our forecast we posted at 8 a.m. this morning uh to your upper peninsula friends. And of course, for those who are located in the lower peninsula as well tonight because again, this is a both this is a threat for both peninsulas. Obviously, that peninsula is in the better zone right now. Um, but again, depending on how much fuel and how strong our uh supportive shortwave trough is, overnight, those winds can and may will, that's not even a word, can and will make it across the lower peninsula. So odds of course are a lot lower, but there's still odds nonetheless. So even when you have a 1% chance, it's still a threat. Now again, if you don't want to stress yourself out, you can think about it the other way. If you're in the blue zone right now, it's only a 95 to 99% chance or it is a 95 to 99% chance that you don't see severe winds uh with a storm if it does impact your area. So, good news there for those in the blue and the green zone. Very low odds of damaging winds, tornadoes, and hail, but there are odds nonetheless. So, you do want to be kind of on alert. Uh highly recommend if you haven't already, if you're going to bed tonight, uh do not want to stay or are not expected to stay up with us and watch our stream all night. Uh, feel free to grab a weather radio. It's a good investment right now. I know you can order it on Amazon or other online store. You can order it right off the Midland weather radio website.
Uh, but again, shipping of course is going to take a couple days. So, if you want a weather radio tonight, best idea is to go to one of your local hardware stores. They usually have them on the shelves. And a weather radio, again, it could save your life. It's only like $50 or something like that, but again, it's $50 that could save your life someday.
So definitely or highly recommend to get one cuz again it's like having a tornado siren in your house if you set it up properly. So make sure if you do get a weather radio today also that you set it up properly. Make sure that you're able to uh connect to your nearest uh weather radio station. Um the Ryan that might be a good graphic for later. I just I don't know where that information is readily available. I would have to look it up. a post about if you have a a weather radio, what your station would be in what side of the state, but it is it is available online. You just have to do a little bit of looking for those who are uh absolutely curious out there. We'll see what we can do. But again, I feel like we're going to be really busy here in the next 90 minutes.
So, um I think I'm going to wrap it up here in a short minute because again, we're going to be ready for the next storm to pop up that goes severe. and we aren't going to be severe during a briefing. So, I know you have you guys have a couple questions in here, but um I think it's pretty straightforward what's going to happen today. Uh again, if you're in lower peninsula of Michigan, please be prepared. It's not guaranteed as much as the upper peninsula. Um but again, there are chances. So right now we're watching a couple strong thunderstorms to the north of Elder County heading towards Grand Marray. At the current time 40 knots of wind and large hail are possible. So that's penny size. So 75 in diameter and uh winds of around 45 to 50 m per hour moving in.
And so we want to be ready in case this line does go warned. We want to be ready for that. So uh shout out first to Red Doer $20 super chat saying I think I can make everyone's day today. Again, we are using a little bit of heightened wording tonight just because uh the hazards are all of them uh tonight, especially damaging winds. But we do have to start a hail and tornado risk, especially right off the get-go. So 4:00 through around that 8 to 9:00 time frame across the upper peninsula. Uh there's a very low chance for hail and tornadoes in the in the lower peninsula. Primarily, it's just the upper peninsula.
very low chance in the lower peninsula, but it's going to be damaging winds no matter what across the entire area, whether it's off the start or way at the end of the event, which could be as late as 3:00 to 4:00 a.m. in the morning down in southern Michigan. So, again, have ways to wake up tonight uh from or to get warnings on your phone or a weather radio. Again, do not wait on the sirens.
There's a lot of inconsistencies with sirens, so make sure to um yeah, find ways. Other than that, Brian, if you have anything else to add, feel free to do so now. Otherwise, I'm going to hop off.

Level one through level four risk all across the state. Best chance of sever of course going to be in the level four zone. Uh second chance or I guess say lower odds but still heightened odds in the level three zone. The lowest odds of course going to be in the level 0, one, and two zones there in the blue and the green across southern lower peninsula.

Now, again, not everyone's going to get severe weather, but it's better to be safe than sorry. Again, this is our heads up to everyone right now. We already saw this with the event that happened um yesterday or two days ago now. It's been so long um with uh the storms in southeast Michigan. That was on Saturday. Um people were saying they had no warning. That's not true. This is our warning now. This is why we're doing this. We're doing these briefings. We did one last night. We're doing it right now. You guys have your heads up. It is now up to you guys, the public, to go out and spread the word and tell everyone about the severe weather hazards for tonight. Again, there's not a 100% guarantee of severe weather, but the odds are very heightened. So, you do want to take it semi- seriously. Make sure you have warnings on you before you go to bed.
