Active aquarium fish are essential for creating a dynamic, engaging tank environment, as they provide constant movement through swimming, schooling, and bottom-dwelling behaviors. Key active fish species include Danios (zebra, leopard, and CPDs) which are highly energetic but may stress calmer tankmates; Corydoras (bottom-dwellers that scurry across the substrate); Tetras (schooling fish that thrive in groups with dark backgrounds); Rasboras (active swimmers like green cubes and rummy nose); and Guppies (beginner-friendly livebearers with beautiful tails). These fish enhance tank aesthetics and create a sense of life, though some species like Danios can be too active for timid fish.

Active Aquarium Fish For Your Tank! [Weekly Walkthrough Ep. 39]
Added:If your tank feels boring, you might not need more fish. You just need fish that move. This week we're talking about the active fish, the ones that make your aquarium feel alive, the ones that never stop swimming, schooling together across the top, or scurrying across the bottom.
Let's go check them out.
>> [music] [music] >> What's up, aquarium keepers? I'm Lovo with flipaquatics.com, and you're tuned in to our weekly walk-through. Every week we give you a sneak peek behind the scenes at the tanks that we're shipping out of, what's looking good, what's coming out of quarantine, what we're really loving right now. This week we're talking about all the fish that bring movement to your tank. Let's start with some danios. If there's one fish that's going to make a tank instantly feel alive, it's a danio. These guys are always active, although I will say they can be a little bit crazy and maybe stress out some of your calmer tankmates, so that is something to keep in mind about these guys, but um there's leopard danios, there's zebra danios, there's CPDs. Let's talk about CPDs down here, actually. So, if you're not a member of our YouTube, you definitely should be. Um we have a never bred CPDs before, and Bobby, she's one of our newer team members. She's been here like probably 4 months now, but um she is really into anytime we have a fish laying eggs or having babies for the live bearers, she is loving it, and so she has this tank set up, um and she's been collecting eggs regularly, and she's been given uh regular updates on our members-only videos of what she has going on over here, the different things that she's been trying, and just talking about how that experience is going. So, I'm really excited for this. I know Rob's also really excited for it, because if she can get uh us breeding some really healthy CPDs, that would be a game-changer. We sell so many of these guys, but a lot of times they don't come in uh too healthy, and so it takes a while before we can get these guys in stock once they get here and get nursed back to health, but let's go check out the fish that I first fell in love with.
All right, we're over here at the gold white cloud minnows and if you know about Zigzag, he was the first fellow I fell in love with whenever I I wasn't even taking care of fish yet, actually.
I had my office upstairs uh when I used to do our marketing and I just I was walking through the fish room and I saw one of these guys and he had a crooked little spine. He was a sad little fellow and he got real fat before uh before he passed away. He passed away a couple months ago, unfortunately. Um but he lived a good life even with his crooked little spine. But these are the gold white cloud minnows, really any minnows.
These guys are really active, but they're not like crazy like the danios can be. They're definitely a little bit more calm. Um definitely recommend keeping these in groups. So, there's a gold white cloud minnow, there's the regular white cloud minnow. We also um usually get the long fin white cloud minnow, which are really really pretty.
I actually just ordered more of those because they're a such a good seller for us right now because as you know, it is summer tub season and we've been on the summer tub train and I put together my first patio pond a few weeks ago and so that has been a learning process. I will say that. I've definitely had to make tweaks even since putting that together.
Um maybe there'll be a video about that.
I don't know, but if you're not on our Discord, you definitely should be. We have a whole summer tub club channel, but we have a lot of other channels where you can go ask questions, just connect with other people that are in the hobby. We have a lot of really smart people on there. Really great people to connect with. So, definitely go check out our Discord. Now, let's go check out some fish that hang out at the bottom of the So, not all fish have to hang out in the middle or at the top to have fun.
Corys have fun in their own little way, always scurrying across the bottom, digging in the substrate, finding the leftover food. The thing about Corys is, you know, one Cory is cute, but you need a group of Corys to get the the true vibe of the active shoaling behaviors of them. We're over here at the panda Cory tank and this is a hot take. I know a lot of people really love a panda Cory and they're cute, but they're they're not my favorite. Honestly, if I had to pick a a cory, I'm just trying to think like for this little segment, like what is my favorite cory? I think my favorite cory is the spotted cory. We haven't had that one in a really long time, but if I had to pick a second cory that we do typically have in stock, I would say the pepper cory or the paleatus cory. Same same fish, different name. Those guys are really cool. They have a lot of character. Let's go look at a fish that has a little bit more color. You can't have a video about active fish without showing the rainbow shiners. These guys are super active, super beautiful minnows. Um actually, if you're looking for a fish for an outdoor tub, I would definitely recommend these guys because the prettiest part of their coloring is right across their back. Rob usually says that they look like little dragons, and I think he is kind of right. You actually can't really appreciate their true colors in this tank right now cuz we have some tannins going on in this water, but Em will overlay some really good b-roll for you so you can see what they really look like. But, another really great fish if you're looking to add some movement to your tank. Uh they do like really they like cool, well-oxygenated water, so that's something to keep in mind. And you guys know it wouldn't be a video if I didn't talk about some tetras, so let's go look at some. Okay, so Em put tetras in this list for us to talk about not knowing that I think I'm exiting Okay, I don't know if I'm actually exiting my roebloctin era and my problem with ordering endlers. Because also, Em did give me permission this week, uh her stamp of approval to order more endlers.
So, that's crazy, but I have noticed the last couple times I've been ordering fish, I can't get my eyes off the tetras. Um we have a handful of tetras that we don't typically have just on a regular basis, and so I want to show you guys today. Uh first ones are the rummynose tetras. These guys are really cool, very artsy-looking fish. Um Alex is in love with these, and she's a sucker for just rummynose fish in general, I think. She likes the rummynose rasboras, too, but really all the tetras are super active, very cool when they're schooling together. I think the more tetras that you can have in a tank safely, the better because it is just so cool. A lot of people really like the cardinals and the neons because they kind of like seem to glow in light. I definitely recommend keeping them in a tank with like a dark background because the tetra rack is one of my favorite racks that we have just because of the dark backgrounds. They're really pretty fish. They really pop with the the light, but rummy nose tetra is super cool, super unique. But, this one we just got in we haven't had in a long time and that's the kochu blue.
We have some tannin in this water right now, too, so you can't see their blue as much, but super super pretty fish. This is a fish that we haven't had in quite a while actually, but super pretty blue color in their body. You can see them schooling together. The tannins are taking away from their color a little bit, but definitely a beautiful fish that you want to look up online so you can really see what these guys look like. Speaking of really pretty blue fish, the super blue cory is a fish that I can't stop thinking about lately. I got these in for the first time maybe like a month ago. First time we had had them in a while. They sold really quick, so I made sure to get more and I actually just ordered like a whole tank more of them. These guys are jumpers, I will say that. We've been having issues with them trying to jump out even with a lid on the tank, so they're about to go into 125 when they come in this time, but another really pretty tetra. Just get the tetras. If you want to active fish, get a tetra. You can't go wrong with those. Let's go check out a rasbora I'd recommend. Rasboras in general, for I would say most of them are pretty active swimmers, fun fish. But, green kubes are definitely one of the favorites around here and it seems like you guys really love them, too.
They are also sometimes called green neon rasboras, so something to keep in mind if you've been looking for those.
Green kubes are the same thing. But, these are really cool like translucent green fish. So, rasboras in general are pretty active fish. Even the micro rasboras like chili rasboras, exclamations, mirras, all those are really popular, but harder to get a hold of most of the year. We actually haven't had chilies in a couple months. Even mirrors we haven't been able to get in for a while, but then you have your more like mid-size rasboras, which that's what I would consider the green cubes.
Right now, these guys are a little bit smaller than what they will get, but a super active swimmer. I definitely recommend keeping rasboras in a group.
Really cool to watch them swim back and forth together. Then you have some a little bit bigger ones like the rummy nose rasbora. So, any other rasboras I would say except for the dwarf emerald rasboras, they are active, but they're a little bit more on the skittish side.
They don't have as much personality as some of the other rasboras, but if you're looking to add something active and you like your rasbora, it's definitely going to be great for your tank. And last but not least, bet you thought I was going to show you an endler.
And while I do believe that they probably deserve a spot in this video, we're going to go with the guppies this time.
Um, so we actually just opened this rack. It's been completely empty for quite a while now, but you know, we needed more guppies. We're selling guppies like crazy. Maybe it's the season. Maybe people are just seeing how great guppies are finally. This whole rack we have blue metal dragons, red metal dragons. Truly there's a guppy for everybody, but such an active swimmer.
Their tails look beautiful, especially ones when you get patterns in the males or sometimes females have them have the patterns in their tails, too. You really can't go wrong with a guppy. They're really beginner friendly. They're live bearers, which makes them extra cool in my opinion. You know, if you don't love a guppy already, you need to go check out the video where I added fish to my outdoor patio pond because there's no way you can watch that video without falling in love with the pink tuxedo guppies. They're a guppy that I felt was underrated for a long time, um, but that has been confirmed on our discord. We had somebody commenting saying that she actually didn't like guppies, but after watching that video, she really likes the pink tuxedo. So, go check that out. They're so much prettier when you see them in natural sunlight.
That's all we have for this week. Let me know in the comments what you would add to the list. As always, the fish that you see in these tanks are the fish that we're shipping out right now. So, if you're placing an order, these are the fish that we're sending out to you. So, uh make sure you check back next week for another weekly walk-through showing you what's coming in, what's looking good, what we're just really loving right now. As always, God bless and we'll catch you on the flip side.
