In trauma care, the FAST (Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma) scan is a rapid bedside ultrasound examination that detects free fluid around the heart and within the abdomen to identify internal bleeding, but it cannot reliably detect pneumothorax or hemothorax in the pleural cavities; the eFAST (extended FAST) examination addresses this limitation by adding lung and pleural views to provide a more complete trauma assessment.
