Pole barn style houses are constructed using a framework of steel or wooden posts set in concrete footings, with the structure built around these posts rather than traditional framing; this construction method is particularly suitable for challenging terrain as it allows for flexible foundation placement and can accommodate steep slopes, though it requires careful planning for drainage, retaining walls, and proper post protection to prevent soil contact and water damage.

Living with Rufus update!! Progress!Added:
House update, guys. Check it out.
Living with Roffus is about to come through. Um, we're a long ways from that, but progress is progress. Check this out, too, y'all. Check this out.
Look at that barn.
I told y'all I wanted to be able to see nearly to the back of that because that's where the cows are going to live at, where my truck is. Crow's going to be on that lower side. Got to get all that fence moved today so I can start setting post and all that temporary fence going to come out. Let's see if we can spot Rufus. Oh yeah, from the front porch I'll be able to spot him.
Keep an eye on him. Let's see if we can find Redford. Oh yeah, Redford stays in his corner. That's the great divide fence right there. I pointed that at my front porch for a reason so I could see both of them trying to tear it down.
There's my view.
That's going to be great. But check this out. So, let me give you the layout here. I love looking down there at that barn. Man, I picked some great colors, too. What do y'all think? The house gonna be that same color, but it's gonna have that bottom border. I forget what that's called.
Um, okay. So, these posts here are for the porch. I had them scoot the whole house back just a little bit so I can slope this better. Um, so anyways, that these posts here are the porch. They're going to look just like that right down there. Uh when it's done, um it's going to have a metal the green metal around the top coming down some of course. Um and then the uh little cross braces on each one of them. And then when you look in there be 10 foot the width from that post to those those boards a little bit further. Well, that post there is the first house post. And then the porch will go 10t over there, 30 foot down that side.
That post is actually as far out as it goes. And then 30 foot down that side is the other porch. And then all the way across the front is concrete porch.
Okay. So then let's just stand right here where we can see. So if you're standing I'm so excited about this guys. So, if you're standing here on the porch uh where the where the house is going to be window I think there's four windows across the front the front door and then two three we just did separate windows for each one. Um I like those a little bit better than the double windows, but it's just going to be windows all the way across.
And then we may end up adding a couple above the porch. I don't know yet. I've got some. We're going to see how much room they have there. And then um the whole the whole front of it is going to be the living room. All facing this way, of course. And then the kitchen, it's all open. The kitchen's going to be right out there. And then bedrooms and stuff from there back. It's going to have a really big garage. It's super long. I think it's a 80 ft long. It's going to have a big garage so man can do all the merch. What I'm excited about is get this front porch on here. And uh, of course, we we what we're trying to do is just get the whole shell done, all the windows, the doors, everything like that, and the rough end plumbing inside here. And then we got to back up and re-evaluate. And then start some kind of little plan there to keep moving forward because that's all we are prepared to spend at the time. So once we get inside here, we'll have to do little pieces at a time, but we'll have the whole shell, the plumbing in the floor. We got our well drilled over there. We got our septic right here. So, we got a lot of that stuff done. Um, and then once I get the house up, we'll have to get the power the power will come in. Come up here. I want to see where the porch was going to go before I had the power brought in.
So, anyways, what do y'all think? Give me your thoughts on this. So that that'll be all formed up concrete.
Um I think it's a total of 30 60und and something feet of porch, 10 foot wide porch. Um I'm excited. I am super excited. Oh, right where the Ranger is back there. 16T garage door on that side. Black. All the window frames are black. Um so yeah, there's what we're looking at.
I've never done a actual pole barn style house, but this one is. They put all the post in, pour concrete around everything. Of course, the porch is separate. It'll step down a little bit, so the water um but anyways, what do y'all think? Be sitting here watching old roof in no time.
We're hoping to get a lot of the stuff done this summer, but you know how it goes when you're building something. Things never cost what you think they're going to cost. Um, so I sure hope I graded this as good as I possibly could have because otherwise it's going to take a lot of fill. It's going to eat up some stuff. The well over there, 600 ft deep. Shoo, that was a good one. That one hurt.
And then the power line of course going to be pretty good expense. But look at how big this thing is. I don't know if y'all can see this or not, but I mean I mean we going to be back here. This going to be the edge of the living room right here. So you can just picture it.
Windows all the way around. Big patio door there I believe somewhere.
Pretty neat though. Those are the post protectors. I don't know if I said that yet or not. Those go on the ground with the post so the post doesn't come in contact with the soil or with water. You can see them on every one of them.
Trust is 40ft 2x6.
And then um we're going to have a lot of extra room back here. And I kind of wish I had put an extra door back here, a garage door.
They've already got their post set. The doors are like six weeks out. So forget that idea.
I'll probably put a just a regular 36 inch door back here.
Check it out, though.
I am super stoked.
Let me know if you guys like these updates, too. And don't forget to subscribe cuz I'm going to go through this thing and I'm going to tell you the pricing to everything as we've gone so far. Um, see what y'all think.
I don't think it's going to be a whole lot cheaper than building a house, if any, than just your standard traditional house.
But, um, I'll let you know. I mean, it's definitely big. It's 40 by 80, so it's it's going to be a big one.
I really wish I'd have brought that out a little bit further, but I may end up doing stone there. Kind of a stone retaining wall or something kind of deal both sides. I run out of room. This little finger here jets out outside the mountain and I ran out of room on it.
I'll be honest with you, I'm getting really close to my road, but I wanted that full 40ft living room.
So, I've walked all this in with my tractor bucket loaded with dirt. They've got plenty of room there. But, um, anyways, there'll be my rug coming up. Water fence going down through there. I'm getting way ahead of myself, but check it out.
Living with Roffus, a dream coming true. Me and Amanda have been trying to do this for years and uh I think it's going to happen. What do y'all think? I think by God it's happening by the Lord himself has blessed us so we can get this started a little bit early. We planned on doing this just like this and selling our home and then living in a camper in this thing um until we could afford to do the rest of it. But um we we've we just decided to get the shell up and just tough it out and see if we can get it done without having to just sell out and move over here. So we'll see.
Then you can kind of see where those posts are. That one's not set yet.
That's why it's crooked. But definitely going to have to work on some retaining here. That looks ugly because it swamp me out today. But um then I'm going to slope all this back about with that same.
So it's really going to be up there when you're in the house looking out or on the front porch. You're going to look like you're on stilts up there.
What do you think? And I dug it back into the mountain. So, and there's the view.
Road built by yours truly.
Those guys today slid off down that.
It's It's a lot steeper than it looks on camera. They get up here and it was slimy on top. I had top dressed it yet till I'm done with concrete trucks and everything, but they slid off this thing.
It's It's a That other road goes below.
It's about seven or eight foot drop. and he said his old Hind was sucked up tight. So, cracked me up.
