The Supreme Court's recent ruling on Alabama's congressional maps demonstrates a concerning double standard in voting rights jurisprudence, where the same justices who previously ruled that four months before an election was insufficient time to remedy discriminatory maps now permitted Alabama to implement such maps just two months before primary elections, effectively stripping black voters of representation and handing Republicans an additional seat.

I Broke Down the Supreme Court's Latest Attack on Voting Rights in 4 MinutesAdded:
So, there is an important update on voting rights that I think you need to know about. This week, the Supreme Court ruled that Alabama is allowed to redraw their maps ahead of the midterm elections, effectively stripping black voters of representation in Congress and handing the Republican party an additional seat.
In this case, the court overruled a panel of three district court judges who concluded the maps were so intentionally discriminatory that they were still unconstitutional even after the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act. And what's more, two of the judges were actually Trump appointees.
In addition to how wrongheaded this decision was on the merits, this case also exposed a glaring double standard that demonstrates just how partisan this court has become. This decision was not about the law. It was about power. So, let me break down what the Supreme Court just did and explain why it's so egregious.
In 2021, Alabama drew congressional maps that discriminated against black voters. And even the Supreme Court eventually agreed that this was true. But by the time this case made it to the Supreme Court, we were just four months away from the 2022 primary elections. And so Alabama argued that four months was too close to an election to redraw the maps, no matter the reason. And the Supreme Court went along with their argument. The illegal maps, everybody agreed they were illegal, stayed in place for the 2022 midterms because it was too close to the election. Remember that point? four months before an election was supposedly too late to redraw congressional districts. Now, fast forward to today.
Alabama is once again trying to use discriminatory maps. Not only did the Supreme Court decide to allow these maps to take effect, but they also ruled that the maps can take effect ahead of the upcoming primary elections in August of this year.
If you'll recall, just a few years ago, the state of Alabama held the view that they could not possibly they could not possibly redistrict four months before an election.
Multiple Supreme Court justices explicitly made this argument in their opinion.
This time, the election is just two months away.
So, here's the double standard.
The very same justices who previously argued that four months was not enough time to redraw maps in order to remedy discrimination and now letting Alabama do it just two months before an election. Apparently, when it comes to erasing black voters and handing another seat to the Republican party, the standard goes out the window. The important point here is that this court will twist themselves in knots to give an advantage to one party over another. They are not making these decisions in an impartial manner. Sadly, the Roberts court is made up of partisan actors and ideological extremists who will do and say anything to help the Republican party stay in power. If that means shredding any remaining credibility they have, they don't seem to care. They couldn't care less as long as they achieved their ultimate goal of advancing their extreme agenda.
