Psalm 37:4-5 teaches that delighting in the Lord and committing one's way to Him leads to receiving the desires of one's heart, which are transformed by God into kingdom purposes rather than worldly wants; this requires finding joy in God's promises, trusting Him through circumstances, and growing through fellowship with other believers.

Come Together Live ft Tommy Cota 05/12/2026 "Delight, Commit, and Trust" Psalms 37Added:
Kwave 1110 and 107.9 sharing life, delivering truth, giving hope. I'm Bob Shaw. You know, as as we all do, some voices add to the chaos, but God's word cuts right through it. So, that's what Come Together Live is about every weekday morning here on Kwave. Real scripture, real encouragement before you head deeper into the day. We're also live on Facebook and YouTube if you want to watch. Today's devotional led by Pastor Tommy Cota from Hope Alive Church in Santa Ana. You can also hear Opa Live Radio Saturdays at 5:00 PM right here on KWave. Welcome back, pastor. Good morning.
>> Hey, Bob. Doing well. Doing well. Man, that that is so true, man. God's the word of God just cuts right through all the all the noise. And um that's my desire here this morning with everybody listening. Um there's a passage I'm going to read right now, and I'm sure that there are so many of you that might say, "Hey, I'm familiar with this verse." You may even have a magnet on your refrigerator that says this verse and it's out of Psalm 37 verse number four and it reads, "Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart." And in verse five, five goes on to say, "Commit your way to the Lord, trust in him and he will act." And and just a a couple of things that I want to share just for a word of encouragement. the whole context how this be this chapter begins in Psalm 37 is addressing David is writing and he's saying he says you know don't trip or don't fret on those people that are doing evil things and I know that it's real easy for us to desire to to please the Lord and walk faithfully before the Lord but all of the the craziness around us we might look and say man why am I going through this but these people who are sinning and living life like whatever they they seem to be flourishing.
>> And here I love this because here the attention is drawn back to God and he says delight yourself in the Lord. And when I think of this word delight, you know, it's not just doing these things, but it's delighting. And if you're listening, I want to encourage you think of some of those things that you might you might delight in. Like for instance, I love to delight in chocolate ice cream. This is my ice. I'm going to delight in it and I'm just going to eat every bite of this ice cream. Well, in the same idea is just find your hope and delight in your satisfaction in all of the things of God. And when we do that, it will help us as it says in verse number five, to commit our way. So, when we're delighting in all the goodness of God, there's going to be this willfulness to commit everything about our lives over to the Lord. And not just that, but also to trust in him. And that can be a challenging thing. We say we trust in the Lord, but to trust in him, you know, I think of like how my kids when they were small, they would just trust me enough to jump into the deep end of the pool. And that's kind of what God wants us to do is just trust in him.
Keep our eyes only on God, not the circumstances. Find your delight in Jesus. Trust in him and and he will carry you through. And so family, listen, all those I want to encourage you. Delight your way into the Lord.
Find commit your way and trust everything. Trust everything into the hands of Jesus. And I love to pray right now. Father God, I just thank you so much for just loving us. And I I pray for everyone listening today, Lord, that that we all would find our delight in you, Lord, in your word, Lord, as we spend alone time through prayer with you, Father. And as we reflect on your um just on your promises of God and as we do that, Lord, help us, Father, to commit everything over to you and to trust you in all of our circumstances.
Father, go before us in the name of Jesus. Amen.
>> Amen. Thank you, pastor. And the discussion keeps moving on on Facebook and YouTube with more conversation around delighting in the Lord. What does that mean? What what what are the desires of your heart? And here on Kwave, when life has stretched us to our limits and trials have brought us to our knees, Pastor Greg Lorie says, "Remember that God's word is the lifeline we can cling to." And he shows us the pain Jesus faced at the cross and how the Lord will comfort us in our darkest hour. That's coming up next on A New Beginning.
Sounds like uh another of God's many promises in that verse right there.
>> Yeah, absolutely. And you know there there's so much here especially in in the beginning uh like the first nine verses there's actually three times David writes in verse number one um and verse number seven and again in verse number eight he uses this word this phrase he says fret not. Now, I I don't use this language, you know, hey, I'm fretting, but but um you know, and and how I see it is like he's telling us like I maybe a word that I use my vernacular today would be like, man, don't trip like don't get don't trip on these evildoers. So, verse one, verse 7, and also in verse 8. And I think this is so easy for us to find ourselves like just looking around, you know, and and I hear this a lot, Bob. Like a lot of people are just wanting to pursue the things of God and live faithfully before the Lord, but then they're observing their neighbor or their friend or even a family member for that matter and their lifestyle and how they're just living a life like, you know, of debauchery and and just living in the flesh. and they observe that man I'm trying to do my be very best for the Lord but man I keep hitting every roadblock all these other people their life seems to be flourishing and doing well and I love it because this is God's way saying hey listen get your eyes off all those things find your delight in me you know that's kind of how I hear God speaking to me find your delight in me you know and and and just commit everything trust me and also there's a there's right there in verse number seven. Um, you know, there was not enough time to share this over the, uh, radio waves, but verse 7 starts off with these words, "Be still before the Lord," >> you know, and and I love that because sometimes we just get so full of anxiety because of all of our circumstances.
This is kind of where we need to be. We need to chill out, be still, don't trip on all these other evildoers. find our find delight in the things of God, the the promises of God, the the love of God.
>> It's a slippery slope, too. Well, when you get caught up in comparison and you want what others have, you don't have, looking at the nice cars, looking at the nice houses and all that, all that stuff. But I think we need to examine what he means by the desires of your heart. Those aren't the desires of your heart. The desires God knows. God knows better than we do what the desires of our heart are.
>> Yes. And you know, and this Yeah, this is such Thank you for bringing that up, too. Um I almost forgot. I wanted to mention this. Delighting. And I love it because he says, "Delight yourself in the Lord." And then it goes on, he will give you the desires of your heart. And sometimes people may read this and misunderstand like, "Oh, if I just do this, well, I have my desire for a Cadillac. You know, I got my desire for my bank account. This is and and here's here's the amazing thing is that when we are delighting in the things of God, the promises of God, the the love of God, he then pours into us desire, new desires, you know, it's like I remember what the Bible says in in the New Testament, he gives us a renewed mind. He gives us a new a new heart, even a new song on our on our lips, you know, on our tongue.
And so everything is new. So this new desire is not for the things of this world. As I'm delighting in the things of God, the hope of God, the promises of God, he then puts these desires in my heart. And it could be my desire of my heart is I I just want to I want to share the gospel today with my family member or with my coworker. This is a brand new desire. And God will in his way, he will make that opportunity for you to share the truth of the gospel with a loved one. And then you you'll begin to see like, man, the more I delight in the things of God, the more of the kingdom of God is my mind filled with to be about all of his business.
>> Yeah. Cuz I mean, you really have to look at that verse. You know, at first glance, it's like, well, he'll give me anything. But what are the conditions?
Delight yourself in the Lord.
>> That's the condition. Then >> he'll give you the desires of your heart. That's how it works. And >> he changes you eternally. And once you have that eternal perspective, you have a more clear picture of what the desires of your your heart truly are.
>> Yeah. Yeah. And that can be a challenging thing. Well, I don't want to say a challenging thing, but I I think where where uh many may question too, it's like, okay, they may I get it. I understand it intellectually. Um, but how do I practice this delighting? You know, because a lot of times people just be honest. Sometimes people like they don't know where to start reading in the Bible or, you know, they just like I I'm reading and I'm trying to delight but I don't understand what is going on. And and and that's where like small groups can come in. you know, that's where, you know, just relationships with other Christians can come in because that's also a way where we find our delight, you know, being the church, you know, loving on one another, being loved on by someone else, you know, sharing the gospel and asking, you know, particular questions about the scriptures about God. And and then we just find like, oh man, my my heart, my mind is opening more to, you know, to these wonderful truths in the scriptures. and before you know it, you know, that person is delighting in in the scriptures and they, you know, kind of you don't really realize it in until you kind of take a step back like, "Oh, wow. I like this.
This is good and I want to keep doing it." And I think that's what really when a person figures that out or when the Holy Spirit reveals that actually, that's when I see many men and women of all ages just like, "Man, I can't get enough of the word of God." you know, because they're discovering the richness of of of God's word.
>> Yeah, it it's true what you you're talking about, you know, with other people and and groups and and all these things, we forget that other side to it, and that's fellowship. And if we don't have the fellowship um and we're just talking to God, I mean, just talking to God's a great thing, but you got to have that fellowship aspect, too, because we can't get through this world alone. Or else we're going to get pummeled by the world and we're going to be transformed by the world, and pretty soon, you don't know what your desires are. They'll be more superficial than anything.
>> Yeah, that is so true. Yeah. And you know, just kind of very quickly, there's a there's a a principal at one of the local high schools where I do a Bible club, and he's a he's a pretty new Christian. He just recently gave his life over to the Lord. And so, every time on this campus, he, you know, we see each other, and he's just exactly what you said. He's um going through the scriptures in a small group Bible study and he says he's just falling in love with the scriptures and with the word of God. And and I told and I actually I told him that I said, "Man, you know what you're doing, bro? You're delighting in the things of God, bro."
And and when you do that, it's just it gives you a thirst and a hunger for more, you know? It's kind of like that chocolate ice cream analogy, you know?
It's like, man, I want some more chocolate ice cream.
>> Yeah. No, that's exactly right. And I'll I'll even give you an example. I I lead a marriage group uh with with our church, and um my wife and I went through this one book probably a couple of times, just just by ourselves. But when we got into our group and we we decided to study that book, it opened up new things because people had new perspectives, new ideas, new new ways to think about things that we never thought about. That's that's where growth happens, man.
>> Yeah. Yeah. That is so it is so true, you know, and I think many of us perhaps even watching or listening right now can can just reflect, you know, just like you, bro. I I that was where I was. I think I always tell people my spiritual growth spurts um happened especially when I was a young believer in in these small group settings and and for me they were unintentional. We just always hung out with people after church and then, you know, we just start talking about the scriptures or talking about the sermon and the next thing you know, it's like, man, two hours have went by and our kids are running around going crazy, but we're just like like like ministering to one another in a small group fellowship setting and and so yeah, fellowship is so dynamic. It's a reason why, you know, we find in Acts chapter 2, you know, the Bible says that the church grew and they continued in the they continued in the word, they continued in prayer, they continued in the the communion elements, you know, the breaking of bread and they continued in fellowship. These are essential things for us to really never neglect. If we do all three, if you do three out of the four, you're still missing an element, you know. Um, so yeah, it fellowship is so important and especially in our learning how to delight in the things of God.
>> I mean, just think about what Jesus did.
He had fellowship wherever he went during his ministry. He had 12 disciples, you know. Yeah, >> he had constant fellowship. And I I think he uh I think it was vital. I think he was demonstrating that model of what we should do as believers. Good stuff.
