DRAFT DAY STEAL Washington Capitals Target Nikita Klepov as Potential Game-Changer in 2026 NHL Draft

[00:00:52]Uh if you are an everydayer of the show, you know I've spoke about Lynn, I've spoke about command. In this episode, we talk about Nikita Klepov and this is where things can get really interesting.

[00:01:05]And I'll talk about why there is legitimate disagreement around Kpopov's projection and why some scouts think he is a top 10 talent while others have him sliding later towards the first round.

[00:01:18]That matters because the Cap's own pick 16 and 18 after acquiring Anaheim selection in the John Carlson trade.

[00:01:27]Then I'll break down is there a fit?

[00:01:29]Could Klepoff become a part of the next offensive core with Leonard, Crystal, and Ilia Prois? And does he fit with what the Capitals are trying to build in the postvetchkin era? But where we will start, uh, the biggest takeaway is the Capitals may not get another opportunity to add a player of this offensive creativity without drafting in the top 10. That's why this player, Nikita Klepov, has everybody talking. Uh, so let's just get it going here. And to be clear here, I'm not the only one that thinks that Nikita Klepov uh would be a good option for the Capitals. Many have drawn lines to the Capitals, but of course, it's the draft. We don't know if he's going to be available or um if there's going to be a player that we didn't think that was going to be available that is available. But when you take a look at Nikita Klepov, I think that he would be an excellent upgrade uh for the Capitals for what is this building offensive core on this team. So, let's dive into it and what I would call him as pure offensive chaos because Klepov might be the most offensively gifted uh player realistically available to the Caps at 16 or 18. And that to me is ultimately why this conversation matters so much because when you take a look at the Capitals right now kind of caught in this uncomfortable transition period where is Obie coming back? Is he not coming back? Are we building for you know a Stanley Cup run in one season or are we pivoting more towards the future?

[00:03:09]And you look at the prospect pool and there's a lot to like already, right?

[00:03:14]Ryan Leonard, uh, who put up 20 goals this past season after back-to-back 30 goal seasons at Boston College. Uh, you got Andrew Crystal, right? Uh, who put up 20 goals for Hershey last season and Ilia Pro who put up 29 goals for Hershey at center. So much excitement, right, that the Capitals are good right now.

[00:03:36]But if you can just peek in, you know, to the horizon, to the future a bit, there is so much to love. And then the excitement on the blue line that Cole Hudson was projected talent and we know his brother and how great he is. But is there any chance that the Cole Hudson can be any good? And as a matter of fact, he's really good. Um, so there's a lot of excitement here. I mean, you look at Cole Hudson scoring a goal in his first game. Again, you put this all in a pot and stir together, there's a lot of excitement about the future of the Capitals. But Klepov, Klepov might have, if you can believe it, the highest offensive ceiling of anybody potentially available in that range. Um, and it's not just me saying it here. If you want to take a look at his numbers in the OHL, scoring with 97 points as a rookie, a rookie, 97 points, uh 37 goals, 60 assists.

[00:04:37]This guy to me is the real deal. And again, I understand that he is playing uh in the OHL, right, with a Sega spirit. Uh and he's a winger. Some have him listed as leftwing, some right-wing.

[00:04:51]Um, but where he is listed with a Sega um uh spirit is a leftwing. So, you know, there is an up a good upside. You know, we've talked about the Capitals are wing heavy, but ultimately at the end of the day, I think the Capitals would like to get a center. However, I think that if you have a player, you got to get you got to draft the best player available at that position, as they always say. And I think that Nikita Kappov could be just that player. And you take a look at the records that he shattered. He shattered Cole Perfetti's Sega rookie scoring record. And that's not normal production. I mean, if you don't know, at a rookie level, this guy's arc, his trajectory is off the charts as far as I'm concerned. [00:05:46]Also in that same breath, uh a really good opportunity for all of you guys to brush up um on the draft coming up here as locked on NHL prospects. Uh those guys knock it out of the park as well.

[00:05:58]But uh a truly dynamic forward uh for the Capitals to have uh in the future potentially if he is available. And you know, everybody says kind of the same thing uh when they watch him play is that he is unpredictable on the ice. his hockey IQ that you think you know what he's going to do, but you don't because he'll do something completely different.

[00:06:21]And that jumps out immediately when you watch him play that you don't know what he is going to do with the puck. And that unpredictable nature um is one thing, but then he attacks defenders with what I'm going to call patience, right? And sometimes patience makes players uh uneasy, you know, that they're they're playing around him. And the one thing that he does at that level is that he manipulates spates space very well. He slows the game down to his level, right? That he's not rushing it.

[00:06:53]He's not nervous. He's very in control.

[00:06:55]He's knows what he's doing. He's not rushing plays. And what he does very well is he reads layers of coverage.

[00:07:03]And you think he's just kind of not doing anything. And then boom, exploding through seams, right? Um, and then when he does do that, the one thing I'm going to say is the shot that he has is nasty.

[00:07:16]And a lot of people have compared his one-time to Afghani Melin, right? That's quite praise there as well because of how dangerous it looks coming off of the half wall because when you take a look at it, he is not, you know, some um premier finesse winger. Oh, no. This guy attacks the middle. Um, and he's a fighter, right? He fights through pressure and he gets into, you know, the dangerous areas. And that is what is very impressive about this draft class is watching a lot of these young forwards. Um, and just the skill set that they have at a young age. And that matters ultimately for the Capitals because the one thing we've seen in recent years is they desperately need more dynamic puck movers. uh that the Capitals for years have been building around Ovuchetkin and and Backstrom and Oshi this rock the thread era that you know at least as far as Oshi and Backstrom they they don't play for the Capitals anymore and Ovuchetkin's a question mark as well. So we're ushering in this new quicker smarter hockey and I'm very excited you know I'm you know I put the last season in the back in the rearview mirror. I'm so in on this draft and I'm so in on the future and just when I talked about Lynn Command, uh, Klepov, there's so many great potential players that could be available to to the Capitals. Um, and when talking about that that the Capitals have lacked dynamic puck movers, that for too long, you know, the offense uh became dump and chase hockey, which was really apparent when Bruce Budro uh was the coach on the Capitals, but too often it became, you know what, I'm going to say stationary and power play hockey, waiting for, you know, uh, Obie's office to open up. And that was what worked and has worked for a lot of years. But what I think we need to understand is that we need to prepare for the future of the young quick hockey that is apparent. Now I know that Buffalo uh got eliminated. That one really bums me out, but that's a topic for a different podcast, but a young fast team in Buffalo that is absolutely a joy to watch. Um and the thing that really kind of stands out about him as well is um he kind of changes the uh what's the word? uh the uh the geometry of the ice if that makes any any sense.

[00:09:38]And I think that that is really exciting and you can envision right if you kind of look in your mind's eye into the future a future power play with uh like Cole Hudson quarterbacking and and Crystal distributing and Leonard kind of just crashing bodies. And in all of that, you have Klepov absolutely unloading one-times, right? Unloading one-times from the flank. So cool. And you know, it kind of gets you excited because that right there is terrifying skill. Now, to be clear here, I want to be an accurate assessor. There are flaws. And this is a common thread when we talk about a lot of these young players is their skating. And why it's not usually held um too strongly against them is because you see this quite often is because skating is believed to be correctable. that they want to get their shots, their mechanics, their that kind of things in place first and the skating can if it has to come after that. You've seen this with Andrew Crystal. Um you know uh when I talked about Lynn, his skating was actually good, but command needed a little bit of work as well. So it's kind of a common thread uh that you see with that. But um mechanics need work. Scouts mention that constantly.

[00:10:48]Um, so skating, uh, mechanics need to work on. And there are moments where, um, his defensive, what I'm going to say, his interest, his engagement fades, um, that if there's a knock against him, sometimes he watches the play instead of, you know, dictating it away from the puck, right? So, um, you know, nothing nothing too major there that I would say. And you know, when you take a look at Klepov, his upside is massive, you know, especially in, you know, what many view uh as a weaker draft outside of the elite tier, right? So, OV, obviously the best of the best is 1 through 10. But with that said, I think there are some really good options for the Capitals at 16 or 18. And I still believe that if Nikita Klepov is available at 16 or 18, you go get your guy. That is unless one of the guys that's one through 10 didn't get picked for some reason. But in any event, Nikita Klepov could be a dynamic player for the Capitals in years to come. Again, very young, right? He's not going to help the Capitals for the a couple seasons here anyway um as he has committed to playing uh in college. Uh but in any event, you know, we're talking about the future wave. So to wrap up segment one here, the biggest reason that Nikita Klepoff is becoming a serious Capitals target is simple. Elite offensive talent um is, you know, I'm going to say it, incredibly hard to find outside the top 10. The Caps suddenly have two swings in the middle of the first round, and Klepov to me feels like exactly the kind of highskill gamble worth taking. So, we're talking about Nikita Klepoff uh in this episode, a winger uh that could potentially be a player that is available uh to the Capitals at 16 or 18. And I think the upside is there and uh if the Capitals are lucky enough, they should go after him. But the bigger question of course is that when I've spoke about Lynn and I've spoke about command and now talking about Klepoff is there a fit is there a future core in the making? Because the big takeaway here out of segment two is that Klepoff fits the exact direction the Cap's prospect pipeline is heading and just the fruits of doing things the right way. Right. that Ross Mahoney and his crew have knocked it out of the park at the draft. And I say that not with Capitals colored glasses on that rarely rarely do I think that Mahoney and his crew took a misstep. I have zero doubt in my mind he will knock it out of the park and I think that very well would select the Capitals would select Klepov if available. But, you know, talking about how how Klepoff would fit in with the Capitals prospect pipeline is huge.

[00:16:38]And that's the thing that keeps jumping out to me is this organization suddenly has layers of skill, right? That you have some players that are contributing right now, right? Ryan Leonard uh put up 20 goals this last season with the Capitals. Ilia Proise, you know, joined the Capitals in the latter part of the season. and Cole Hudson. But if you even go down a bit further, right, you got Crystal and all that. I don't want to miss out on Marroenko. There's a lot of them, but there is layers of success um that'll make this team just really have sustainable winning for years to come.

[00:17:12]And you know, when you let look at it, that was not necessarily true a few years ago. The Capitals were all in win now mode because they were trying to win as much as they possibly could with Oie and Backstrom on the roster. But now they've pivoted towards the future. And you look at the system now and it's loaded with offensive upside. Uh but here's the thing. Most of these players bring offense differently. That it is not a one-trick pony like uh the Capitals are drafting um just a certain type of forward that you have good you have good options at wing. You have great defenders that are coming up.

[00:17:49]could use a bit more centers I guess but um dynamic different players and even in those same positions a different skill set but here's the thing most of these players um like I said have different tools in their tool set Leonard of course brings his size his power his goal scoring uh prous right size and uh I guess what I would say is touch and Crystal you know even though people hold skating which has improved against him his manipulation his vision his hockey IQ, being cerebral, those are all things that he has in his skill set in that same bag. Klepov brings uh he can improvise, I guess, is what I would say. And I think I think that matters a lot, right? that you can improvise in different situations and you need different kinds of um uh offensive engines right in the lineup that it's not just you know the Capitals are rolling this out that you're getting a different kind of forward a different kind of def defender that it is not you know a copype uh rubber stamp Capitals team and when you take a look at Klepov he feels like the kind of player um you know who can create offense in bad situations in broken plays That's the thing that really pops and when you watch the videos is this guy um he thrives in chaos. He thrives when when um structures collapse. He can smell blood in the water. And that is playoff hockey DNA if you ask me. This is a guy that'll kill it in the NHL when he can thrive in chaos. And you know the good thing about the Capitals is they have flexibility at 16 or 18, right? Um we don't know where where he's going to end up falling in the draft. And that changes everything. and the Capitals go in with a full wallet, two draft picks, ready to take on the day. You know, if they had one pick, right, you might prioritize um I I guess what I would say is safer projection. You know, maybe like a center, you know, that's what they need, but you know, centers are coveted. Um but when you take a look at the center pool for the Capitals, they definitely could use more. Um or maybe you address something else like that right side uh defender. uh but two picks allows you to swing and Ros Mahoney right has never been afraid to gamble uh on skill right and you know one of the players that really jumps and I'm not taking a side tributary is that a lot of other teams passed on Ivon Marro Noshenko the Capitals did not and I you know I still think we have not you know fully realized how great IOk is going to be we saw you know glimpse of it in the latter part of the season and also with Hershey but in Any event, that ability to take a a gamble, I guess, on a guy in his case that had, you know, Hodkins lymphoma, but see see and I don't want to say diamond in the rough, but you know what I mean, a player that that had more inside of him, and that's what was apparent. What I love about Ross Mahoney, and that's the important context here. You know, the Capitals uh organization drafted Crystal despite skating concerns, right? Another one, he he last lacked bursts of speed, straight line speed, but one hell of a player. Uh they drafted Leonard for competitiveness and projection. Uh they took swings on upside with Prous and Mro Nenko and Klepov.

[00:21:05]I think he kind of fits that pattern as well. And Michigan State like I said going to college uh he committed to Michigan State uh commitment is actually huge here too because it does give him that developmental runway. So if the Capitals do select him, keep your eyes keenly focused on Michigan State, right?

[00:21:24]because uh if they select him, we'll see how he grows his game in Michigan. He doesn't need to be rushed, right? Uh he can add strength. He can work on the things that need to get worked on, the mechanics. He can work on his defensive habits where he looks like maybe he's not so uh interested when he's not involved offensively. Um because the Caps are finally in a position where they don't need prospects to save the franchise immediately. there is a good core in place and it's not a luxury that every other team in the NHL has but the Capitals do and you know when you take a look at it honestly that's how smart smart organizations draft you know not for uh immediate desperation they draft for I guess what I would say is ceiling and there's another layer that nobody talks about enough is the Caps desperately need um and I think we can all agree on this future power play weapons you know eventually ov retires eventually that left circle gravity disappears.

[00:22:23]So, how do you replace that? You know, you don't replace Obie, but you can rebuild offensive threats uh by committee. You know, Kapov's shot becomes part of the equation. And, you know, if you're kind of envisioning future combinations, right? You know, like I said, you got Leonard creating uh havoc, I guess you could say. Crystal kind of feeding it through seams there in Hudson uh attacking uh downhill. And then you have Klepov out there kind of unloading from the weak side. You know, this guy that thrives in chaos. That's exciting. That's what should have all of you very excited uh about the future for the Capitals offensively and just big picture that I think this team is set up in a really great way for seasons and seasons to come. All right, so to wrap up segment two here is Klepoff makes sense because the Capitals are building a faster, more creative offensive pipeline. His strengths complement that talent already coming through Hershey and the system. And having two first round picks gives the Capitals the flexibility to chase elite upside. The coming up next, why scouts are widely divided on Klepov and why that disagreement could actually help the Caps land him. I'll discuss straight ahead right here.

So, we're talking in this episode about Nikita Klepov, and I've spoke glowingly uh of the praises of where I can almost already envision him in into the future with the Capitals, but there is it's not a clear-cut favorite. Nikita Klepov is not a clearcut favorite. Some people see top 10, some people see a little bit lower.

[00:25:24]And ultimately what the Capitals are hoping for is another team's misjudgment or misstep will lead to uh a great opportunity for Ross Mahoney in the Capitals. So let's talk about that in the final segment of today's show. We're talking boomer bust because the disagreement around Nikita Klepoff is exactly why the Capitals uh could land at 16 or 18. You know, this happens every single draft cycle. Some people, you know, prioritize projection, right?

[00:25:54]That he projects to be a good player.

[00:25:56]And some people um prioritize, I guess what I would say is uh polish.

[00:26:02]And when I take a look at Klepov, he is projection. You look at the rankings, and to be honest with you, they're all over the place. I put some weight into it. You know, at the end of the day, I I trust the people that I trust. Um, I make my decisions based on the, you know, the, uh, homework that I've done and what I've seen from these players.

[00:26:21]Um, but like I say, the rankings are all over the place. Some mocks have this guy going at 12. Others have him near 30.

[00:26:29]Wow, that is quite a disparity there, isn't it? And that tells you the NHL, you know, probably views him, you know, very differently internally around the league. And honestly, you know, I understand both sides. If you love skill, right, you probably adore Klepov.

[00:26:45]If you prioritize, you know, uh, uh, I guess what I would say is pace, consistency, and, you know, what I talked about earlier, uh, defensive detail, well, maybe Cluboff could make you a little bit nervous. You know, especially if you have, you know, you know, picks with greater uh, players available, right? Because there are shifts where, you know, I'm going to say Klepov looks dominant, right? when he's thriving in chaos and feeding a pastor through the seam there and then are there shifts where, you know, he drifts a little bit, right? And I think that, you know, it's easy to, you know, just concentrate on one or the other, but I think what's important is weighing the pros and cons that these are young players. They're not finished products.

[00:27:27]You know, you're not getting, you know, a Bard, a Celibbrini, a Schaefer, one of these guys. The Capitals don't have draft picks in that range. So, you have to kind of make informed decisions, trust your scouting department, um your amateur guys, and make sure that you that you get the best player available.

[00:27:44]And that's a real concern. Scouts also question, you know, how much that offense translates to the NHL that it's one thing to uh dominate at the lower levels, but you know, just because junior hockey, you know, you thrive there does not necessarily mean it's going to translate. uh because junior hockey gives skilled players more time and space, right, that you can slow the game down, but it's not going to be as easy when you get to the NHL. Again, keep your eyes keenly on him when he's playing at Michigan. And the skating mechanics remain the biggest concern.

[00:28:16]Again, not speed per se. Um I guess what I would just say is the mechanics of his skating that uh and that's an important distinction there. you know, he can move, he can attack, but um you know, you when you watch him skate, you'll understand. I guess I would say that the stride uh you know, needs some refinement. Now, you know, the counterargument is obvious, right? That he's 17 years old. You know, it's flex fixable. Uh you cannot teach uh elite hands. This is what I've talked about that skating is fixable. You can't do that. You can't teach elite hands. You can't uh uh teach offensive deception.

[00:28:52]You cannot teach hockey IQ or vision.

[00:28:54]And one thing everybody keeps saying about him is the same word, and I'll use it, dynamic. He is a dynamic player, and that matters because dynamic players can tilt games. He thrives in chaos. And if you're being honest here, the Caps eventually need more game breakers, right, in the post of Vetkin era. You cannot survive long-term on on a a safe middle six projection forever.

[00:29:18]Eventually, you need stars. And that's why this draft uh to me is a fascinating one. Do they do they play it safe or do they take a swing? Because, you know, if Klepov hits, I I believe this in all sincerity, you're potentially talking about a legitimate topline offensive weapon, right? Fully realized. And that's why, you know, fans I've heard from quite a few of you around there believe he won't even, you know, you know, make it to 16. And that's a very real possibility. And, you know, you guys might be right. I don't know. I'm just talking about who could fall at 16 or 18. And you know, the closer we get to the draft, uh, the more momentum, you know, that this player is building, more people are getting hyped on Nikita Klepov and especially, you know, uh, after the OHL scoring title and rookie of the year honors, those those accomplishments matter. You know, the production matters, the and his creativity. Those are all really big things. And the upside, I think the upside on Nikita Klepoff is enormous, right? Um, so to wrap up segment three here, Nikita Klepoff is one of the what I'm going to say most polarizing, one of, not the one of the most polarizing players in the 2026 NHL draft. The ceiling I think is it's incredible, right? And the highs and lows are real, right? That the IQ is great, the disinterest, and the skating or the negatives. Again, these are common things that you hear amongst a lot of these players. Um, but that exact combination could create the perfect opportunity for the Caps if if he slips into the middle of the first round. So, I'm pretty excited. I think if he's available, I think it's a no-brainer for me. So, final thoughts on this show. The Caps suddenly have a fascinating opportunity at 16 and 18. You know, they have a couple different ways they can go safe or they can go for game-breaking skill, but I think that Nikita Kpoff represents the kind of prospect that can alter the team long term offensively.

[00:31:11]and the identity of this organization and you there's risk in the skating.

[00:31:14]There is no doubt there's risk in the consistency, but there's also a legitimate star upside.

[00:31:21]And for a franchise that's trying to bridge eras, right, be it to the Ovetkin era, from the postvetchkin era, that is the kind of swing I think that is worth taking.
