Between any stimulus and our response, there exists a space where we have the power to choose our reaction, and this choice determines our growth, freedom, and quality of life; by recognizing this space and consciously choosing our responses rather than reacting automatically, we can break free from repetitive patterns and transform our lives.

The ONE Secret to a Healthier, Happier LifeAdded:
Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is your power to choose your response. In your response lies your growth and your freedom.
Profound. That quote is from Victor Frankle and it sums up one of the most important truths of life. Victor Franco was a psychiatrist, neurologist, and Holocaust survivor. And he endured some of the most darkest conditions imaginable in World War II. Yet through that suffering, he discovered a profound truth about human nature. And that is this. No matter what happens to us, there is always always a space between what happens and how we respond. And I genuinely believe that understanding this may be one of the biggest keys to a happy, successful, and meaningful life and also a productive life. Because if we're honest, most people spend a lot of their life stuck in repetitive patterns, almost like a robot. the same thoughts, the same habits, the same emotional reactions to situations, the same behaviors every single day. It is like a robot running the same program over and over again. And the real question is this, can you master yourself? Because great rewards await you if you can.
Let's take some examples. Let's take food. How many times have you found yourself standing in front of the refrigerator, reaching for that same unhealthy snack at a vulnerable time, especially when you're feeling down, or you order some takeout because you just don't want to cook at home or you start telling yourself, "I'll start tomorrow."
The stimulus appears, the craving, the temptation, and then the response follows almost automatically like clockwork. That's what it is. It is like clockwork. But what if you paused? What if you mastered yourself? What if you recognized that the tiny space between the craving and the action is where your power is? In that moment, you have freedom. You have a choice. I believe it's God-given choice. And your choice can change your entire future. Let me give you another example. Someone says something rude to you or behaves in a way you don't like. It could be a colleague. It could be a stranger online. Could even be a family member.
And immediately your anger and your tension rises. You start to feel offended by what was said. You want to fire back or you respond with sadness or another emotion. But here's the reality.
I always want you to remember this. You cannot control how other people behave.
You never could do that. Maybe you can do it minimally, but people will do what they will do. That's the way things work often. Yet many people spend years reacting exactly the same way to other people's behaviors. The same argument, the same resentments, the same emotional triggers again and again. But in that space between their behavior and your emotional response, frequently emotional response, lies your freedom. Because the truth is that you don't have to react the way you've always reacted. You don't have to do that. Most people don't realize this. Let's take another example. Social media and the mainstream media nowadays, which has become an addiction for many people. This one is actually quite fascinating because the algorithm will keep sending you things which are designed to provoke an emotional response because you keep clicking, reacting, commenting, the same outrage, the same fear, the anger, the tribalism. You feel good for a moment when you fire back, get a bit of dopamine. So that stimulus arrives and instantly people react. They comment in the same way. They share in the same way. They argue in the same way. Blood pressure rises. Hopefully, this is not you. Mood changes. It's almost mechanical again. The algorithm sends you something or sends someone something and then the response is the same and the machine knows exactly which buttons to push to get your reaction. But can you notice what's happening? Can you step back for a moment? Can you observe your own mind? That is the key to success. Can you choose not to be controlled? This is where Victor Frankle's wisdom overlaps beautifully with stoicism, which I'm a huge fan of.
The great Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, one of the greatest stoic philosophers of all time, would have had a lot to say about this, as would all of the Stoics, who constantly reminded themselves that what we focus on should be what we can control, not what we can't control. our own thoughts, our actions, our character, our response to those situations. Those belong to us. They are ours. Everything else is largely out of our control. Most things are out of our control. And that's incredibly liberating once you realize that because the quality of your life is determined less by what happens to you and more by how you respond to what happens. I repeat, less by what happens to you and more how you respond. So here's the message that I want you to remember from this video. You do not need to keep being that same person in any facet of life, whether it's your health behaviors or anything else. You don't have to keep running the same mental software. That's what it is, mental software. You don't need to keep reacting like a robot to every single temptation, every insult that comes your way, every headline, every challenge that you perceive.
There's always a space, a small space, a really powerful space. And inside that space lies the person you can become, the person you want to become. Victor Frankl wrote one of the most profound books of all time actually called Man's Search for Meaning. I read it a few years ago. It's very tough actually to read because it confronts the darkest aspects of human suffering headon. But that book also delivers one of the most hopeful messages ever to have been written in my opinion that even in the worst circumstances imaginable, human beings still possess the freedom to choose. And if that freedom existed in a horrible place like an extermination camp, it certainly exists in our everyday lives. So I'll leave you with this challenge. The next time a particular stimulus presents itself, this will be unique to you. You know your own life. Pause. Notice that space and remember your future is not determined by what happens to you. It's determined by what you choose to do next. Thank you for watching. I hope this video was helpful to you.
