The Nazi Party adopted the name 'National Socialist' as a strategic propaganda tool to attract workers during post-WWI Germany's economic crisis, despite fundamentally opposing traditional socialist principles of class equality and international worker unity; instead, the Nazis promoted racial hierarchy, dictatorship, and state-controlled capitalism while brutally suppressing actual socialists and communists.

Why The Nazis Had Socialists In Their Name If Hitler Hated SocialismAdded:
If Hitler hated socialism so much, why would the Nazis call themselves the National Socialist Party? It sounds like a contradiction. But the answer is all about propaganda, politics, and power.
After World War I, Germany was in chaos.
Millions were unemployed, angry, and desperate for change. Socialist and Communist parties were becoming popular with workers, especially after the Russian Revolution.
Hitler and the Nazis wanted those same workers on their side. So in 1920, the party renamed itself the National Socialist German Workers' Party, or or Nazi for short.
But Nazi socialism is very different from actual socialism.
Traditional socialists believed in class equality and international worker unity.
Hitler hated both ideas.
He believed society should be unequal, ruled by what he considered a superior race and a powerful dictator.
The Nazis did support some government control of the economy, but mainly to strengthen the state and prepare for war, not to create equality.
Private businesses like Volkswagen and huge industrial companies still existed under Nazi rule, as long as they cooperated with the regime. Despite the name, Hitler brutally crushed real socialists and communists as he gained power in 1933.
Thousands were arrested and imprisoned or killed. One of the first concentration camps in Dachau originally held many political opponents. So why did the word socialist become so helpful to the Nazis? So they could be a party for ordinary workers while still pushing extreme nationalism and dictatorship. In the end, the Nazi party's name was less about ideology and more about winning support.
