When an orange LED is immersed in liquid nitrogen at approximately -196°C, the semiconductor material's atoms vibrate less and move closer together, increasing the band gap (the energy difference electrons must cross to emit light). This causes the LED to emit higher-energy photons with shorter wavelengths, shifting its color from orange toward blue almost instantly.
