Modern telecommunications networks are highly interconnected systems where a single configuration error during maintenance can cause cascading failures affecting millions of users across multiple services, including phone, internet, payment systems, and emergency communications, demonstrating the critical importance of robust network design and change management protocols.

Could This Happen Again? Canada’s Massive Outage #rogers #scary #canadaAdded:
The phones went silent. The internet disappeared, and millions of people suddenly learned how fragile one network could be.
On July 8th, 2022, Canada woke up to a massive telecom outage. Rogers customers could not make calls. Home internet stopped working. Businesses lost connection. Payment systems failed, and some emergency services were affected.
At first, many people thought it was just a local outage, but the problem was much bigger. Behind the scenes, Rogers was upgrading part of its IP core network. [music] That core network handled traffic for both wireless and wireline services.
Then, during the upgrade, a router configuration mistake happened. A policy filter was removed from distribution routers. That allowed a flood of routing information to enter the core [music] routers, and the core routers could not handle it. Within minutes, [music] they crashed. When those routers went down, traffic could no longer move properly [music] through the network. Phones, internet, payment services, business connections, [music] and emergency calling were all affected. More than 12 million customers lost service, [music] and the outage lasted into the next morning as services were slowly restored. But here's the scary [music] part.
This was not a cyber attack.
It was not a natural disaster. [music] It was a network change that exposed how much of modern life depends on hidden [music] infrastructure.
One routing mistake, and millions of people were [music] disconnected. And that's the warning behind this story. When one network carries too much of daily life, a single failure can become a national problem.
So, here's the question.
If phones, payments, internet, and emergency calls all depend on the same hidden systems, >> [music] >> how prepared are we when those systems fail?
