A heat dome is a high-pressure system that traps warm air and creates summer-like temperatures in regions that typically experience cooler conditions, as demonstrated by the Upper Midwest experiencing temperatures 16-22 degrees above average in May, with Minneapolis potentially reaching 90°F by Wednesday, which is 3 days ahead of the historical average first 90-degree day of May 30th.

Summer-Like Heat Locks In Over Upper Midwest, Northern PlainsAdded:
We're back on weather command on this Tuesday after a beautiful Memorial Day weekend in Chicago. Not here in New York City, but Chicago was stunning. A little bit of rain Sunday morning gave way to just a gorgeous afternoon in Shy Town. I mean, just take a look at some of these videos and stills coming out of the river walk from the area. I would pay good money to have a forecast just like this one for an extended weekend. And for Chicago, it's only going to get warmer and really for the rest of the Midwest as well. This is going to be an expansive heat dome parked over spots that maybe have felt left out of the heat that some areas have seen this spring. Temperatures across the region surging into summer-like territory.
Minnesota, specifically Minneapolis, could be feeling their warmest temperatures that they've had since October. Now, the one caveat to a high-pressure dome is sometimes you can get some air quality concerns where it acts as a a lid in the atmosphere as well and so it traps all the particulates, especially in some of the major cities. So, just something to be mindful of if you fall under the sensitive for certain groups category.
That would typically be in the early morning. So, if you're early morning runner, uh the air quality may not be as pristine as you're used to. But, the temperatures will make the week feel gorgeous. 16° above average for Sioux Falls. Minneapolis also trending 16 to about 20°. International Falls, you're running 22° above normal. And this is the exact spot, literally right up against the border with the US and Canada, that has been feeling below average so far this spring. The rest of the country, we've had enough of the warm spells that have put us on the plus side of average in terms of the warmth.
But, you can see where we have that jet set up where we have an dome of high pressure that's working its way uh even into Canada. So, portions of uh southern Canada, Winnipeg, Canada probably also feeling pretty beautiful.
But, an omega pattern looks like the Greek symbol omega Um pretty creative with our names here in meteorology but on either side both the left hand and the right hand side you have two areas of low pressure which can create cooler and more unsettled weather which is something that we'll be experiencing along the Pacific Northwest which we'll talk about in just a moment and then also for the East Coast where yes we're feeling great today but we are going to be a little bit more on the unsettled and chillier side of things but Marissa I mean temperatures to kick off the morning already seen them reach the 70s for Minneapolis. I mean this is warmer than we were all weekend for Memorial Day. We were hard pressed to get into the 60s here in the Big Apple even towards DC. I mean we were trending into the 50s. Over the last 24 hours we really are starting to see that warmth surge into this region.
>> Yeah, I mean some of the temperatures are just so far off from where we should be this time of year especially when you look at the northern plains Montana but to already be in the 70s when you're what only an hour into the sun >> coming up if that. It's impressive and and we're going to keep some of the warmth and getting into today feeling a lot more like July perhaps Minneapolis a brush with 90. Look at Bismarck 94 degrees as you get into tomorrow afternoon. Yeah, I mean Bismarck will likely be warmer than some spots in the Mid-Atlantic even and so the warmth is spreading. It'll also feel a little bit humid too. We've got winds that are coming out of the south especially for the central plains so that humidity is going to make the feels like temperature feel even warmer than that. You'll have a fluctuation of brief cool down I put that in in parentheses you won't be maybe pushing mid 90s but pushing lower 90s North Platte into the 80s but Omaha sticking out into the 90s at least through the bulk of the work week. Heading into the weekend that's where we'll see things kind of moderate back out into the 80s but still above average when you look at where you're statistically supposed to be this time of year. The average first 90 degree day for Minneapolis is May 30th so we're not too far off course. It's May 26th, so 78° so far today, but 90 by Wednesday, which would put it May 27th, so couple days ahead.
>> Yeah, couple days ahead. When you wake up at your afternoon high average, yeah, not bad. It can only go up from here on out for our folks in Minneapolis.
