And both were sitting in cars on opposite sides of a rainwet Harlem street with enough men and enough arms to destroy each other and enough intelligence to understand why doing so would be a mistake.

They talked for 11 minutes, and Harlem did not burn that night, though it had been closer to burning than anyone except the two men in those five cars ever knew. Roosevelt Carter was buried at Woodlon Cemetery in the Bronx on October 17th, 1970, 3 days after the standoff on 116th Street.
