He was so good during the pand pandemic and he was also just really obviously very much enjoyed this very simple existence with with his not that I guess it's not that simple if you're running a winery but he's just just I I don't know I just it really resonated with me and then I went back to watch it recently when he when he when he died I want to just go back and have a look at it and I was sort of reminded at what a just like that there's just you know for all of his Hollywood stuff for all of his huge success esses in the film industry and everything. He had just found his happy place. And I was just I think honestly that was that was the I think the biggest accomplishment he made is that he found this place with his you know with his friends and with his family and and and you know more so than any Jurassic Parks or worlds or any of that kind of stuff. And I just >> Yeah. uh that enables you to taste success the way other people define it and that also enables you to experiment with what you also would like because if you have more wealth >> um you can actually try out all these different things >> that and and see what can make you happy at what level of >> kind of life what kind of lifestyle do you want because if you don't have it then there's only so limited part of experiences that you cannot get a winery if you're, you know, dirt poor. I I had the most amazing time um in um uh at at that Shoreleaf convention because it was a fan-run convention which I I don't think I've been to a purely fan-run convention for a long time. I mean, well, I say that I guess there are ones. Yeah, I suppose the English one is also fan-run to some extent. Um, but this was like purely like an organized group of fans who have been doing this thing for like 46 years or something now. And it was just eye opening just the number of people and the number of >> sort of skills and areas of expertise that they come from. Um, whether it's, you know, whether it's the sciences or the arts or I mean the number of cute little, you know, art pieces that people have done or beautiful, you know, as well as all as well as a guy outside with a with a telescope. So, it was just it was just an amazing amazing experience. But what I was the point of this was we had I had a number of people come up and say like, "Hey, you know, I watch you watch the videos now. Why the hell aren't you exercising more?" That kind of stuff.

And I think that um I think that a lot of actors underestimate the impact especially of these shows that h that has ongoing impact on people's life and and how much they come back for the show as a comfort watch how much they like you know if their heart live in there and it's just it exists in in fans lives I think much more than in yours and you have such a different perspective on it because you can't as I understand you don't even >> we have our own fandom. We have our own fandom. I mean like that's the we've got our like I got my Doctor Who like like that doctor my Doctor Who is is is other people's Stargate stuff. I'm old.
>> Uh I think there's uh there's quite uh recent Doctor Who's as well, right? So it's >> Yeah, I haven't got so funny. Yeah, I haven't done haven't kept up with it in a weird way. There's something kind of nice about, again, not that I don't want more Stargate, but what's kind of nice about it being just its own little contained thing is you can't you don't spoil it by making it again 20 years later and screwing things up. Yeah, The Expanse is um for me was the best sci-fi show that came out since um Stargate. I've never It's true because I love Star much. They are very different. Of course, it's just the expanse, the accuracy of science.
>> Uh the books are great is um but you know it's it's there there is something about the emotional level of how you attach yourself to a show. So Stargate for me was something that I just attached myself. And the expanse when I watched the pilot episode, I was blown away. I was like, "This this this is what I'm going for. This is going to be great. I just knew it." And I loved it so much. I'm I'm sad that they didn't make more stuff because um >> How long did you end up going for? Was it seven?
>> Five.
>> Five years.
>> Five I think. Five. Yeah. Because they had two years on Sci-Fi than the Amazon.
uh bought them and there's three more I think seasons on Prime that they >> why stop if you're prime if you're prime video why even stop >> uh for expensive production I assume and you know uh you know that decisions made in prime do not always um are made in ways that >> are you being diplomatic are you trying to be diplomatic >> I am trying very hard not to >> not that you're not normally diplomatic but you're normally you're very normally you're like very straight about stuff, but when it comes to certain things, you're very good at going like, "No, I'm not going to be straight about that because I may have my thoughts on it, but other people may have different thoughts. You're very good at it. I'm Yeah, I just blurt it out and go like, "Amazon, you suck. Why the hell did you cancel the Stargate reboot?" That's what I say.
>> I think that they have a lot of decisions that they made that uh have a lot of fandoms that were not very happy about these.
>> There's a lot of Yeah, there's a lot of other fandoms that are going to get things that we don't and vice versa.
It's but it is on on them. They they're the money people. They decide and then we uh we have to deal with the consequences. But >> Right. And so do they because frankly if they start losing audience then that's you know that's a it's a funny world. I I I do worry about so few places having the sort of the the the power to to decide what we get to watch. Um but uh but again in a way it always was right.
I mean, it used to be just used to be TV studios that could decide.
>> There's always gatekeepers. Um, it's just the streamers. There has been a lot more um options to go for different things, but then uh everything kind of well I believe that intification happens to pretty much everything and to streaming as well. Uh because before it was more like oh this is a venue where uh other shows can go and some really nice shows were safe. So, the Expanse was saved by Amazon, Lucifer was saved by uh Netflix and I think that was a great show and the way they like I liked Lucifer and and it was very weird how they >> I watched a couple think I watched.
>> Yeah, it's great. I I I think Tom Ellis is great uh and just an incredible character and and and really fun this kind of show where it's it's just fun to go along the the the way the episodic you know uh procedural style is just I I I prefer these shows in general and therefore I found it very very good very good soundtrack too. So >> I came in for the last two episodes of Euphoria.
>> My wife's been watching it. My wife and myself have been watching it forever and I came in and just happened to sit down while they were watching like the well she was watching the second last episode >> and uh immediately got kind of sucked in. I thought it was just just you know the I couldn't part of it I just couldn't get over just the the budgets and the fact that they could just do what basically whatever the hell they wanted to which is just >> kind of amazing. Um and that although that can also go very wrong too. I mean, I've seen that with a lot of like Spielberg films and stuff where you go like >> no budget, no restraints and then you sort of don't have to make the decisions and yeah, it's weird.
>> Again, choice my my opinion on it. Um, we should get into recaps because I realize I've got to do I've got this um, uh, as a friend of ours who's who's who's this is kind of exciting actually.
Friend of ours who's whose kid is looking at getting into the scientist possibly some space related scientists um, and was talking to his parents who said, "Oh, well, you know, David talks to these people all the time." And so he wanted to find out about talking to Issa and I so I'm going to talk to him, find out what his deal is, what he's sort of interested in. And then I might bring it to you um and uh or or a couple of our and possibly a couple of our of our previous guests to talk to about it because um um he's definitely interested in in some antenna antenna related stuff. So I I was like, we talked to antenna people. We know them.
>> Yeah. Well, literally like when we went uh into the private tour that we had and we were in a herz room, we'll literally talk to antenna engineer there.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> So, we could potentially put him in touch with someone. I I don't know what exactly what what he's what he has some think specific questions, but I also I think he just kind of likes I think the idea of just talking about what [snorts] I love this stuff because I just I just feel like if there's any way you could introduce people into stuff. I got, by the way, I got the most wonderful um video message from one of my old tech bandits. Um, bat bat food I think we used to call her. Um, and uh uh which was just basically saying like, hey, I'm doing science and tech and that's, you know, looking back it's, you know, partially because of tech bandits and and uh so I love any any kind of way I can feel like I'm somehow pushing people towards the real science stuff is very exciting to me. So, >> super.
>> Yeah. So, I'll probably put him off it entirely and become an actor. That's probably what'll happen.

>> Of course. Okay. So, the first one that uh we had after our last recap was of an Anna Maria from Plato >> 26 cameras of joy. Yeah.
>> Yeah. It was a second scientist who worked on Plato and somebody who you actually met at the open days on Aztec >> had like a conversation. Yeah. She was at a little booth outside. She was so enthusiastic about to talk to people like it was quite cold and and this outside >> it was not it was fairly miserable.
Yeah, the weather was not great and she was out there.
>> It's the Netherlands. just the weather does not treat you well most of the time. And uh yeah, she was just uh sitting like standing out there whole day and talking science to people like how enthusiastic and dedicated have to be after years of career be so joyful and and and stand outside be and and just just share that joy just >> well I said like do you mind if I if I put this on video and she's like yeah sure go ahead and and it was like I I yeah she was like the perfect guest like we basically she was like we're like well we got to get her you know and sure enough she is absolutely amazing. I mean, >> yes. Uh, so I just like to say what um just one thought of from the video or anything that that we liked about it.
For me, um I think that what gets me is the precision that they need for doing the science because uh when we talk about the trans transit method like you know measuring what uh exoplanets according to the dipu that they have it's like it's and they say like oh yeah like you know dip that's that's that's the method that we we use but the precision required I wrote it down a um one of 80 parts per million in starlight. That's the dip. Just like a dip of Yeah. It's just just the the accuracy of it has to be so high. And that's why we I mean what we get from all these, you know, measurements is is is data. It's a lot of maths. It's a lot of numbers. So we haven't seen exoplanets for a very long time because we had wrong uh assumptions of how how the solar systems evolve. Uh, and then people started noticing, oh, these, you know, Jupiter-l like things are very close to the sun and going really fast around. That's not how it works here in the solar system. And they called the hot Jupiters and it was the first exoplanets that we realized we have >> the first ones. [laughter] >> Uh, as far as I know, these were the first ones because they're large and they are more detectable because there just, >> you know, the data is there.
>> Uh, blotting out the sky, is there?
>> Yes. But now just what we've done and I don't know how long the science of exoplanets is but I remember that I think it was in the '9s that we we talked about the first exoplanets. So and now what we what we can detect and the data that we have about the exoplanets not just that they exist but we can actually know what is in there is incredible.
>> How do you pull that data out of all the noise as well? Well, that's the thing that I can't I can't believe that I mean, you know, it you know, a you know, a star dips in value.
>> Well, that could be I mean, that could be any I mean, you're so far away. It could be something else between it.
Could be there's all sorts of things that could be responsible for it. A fly moving across the camera lens. I mean, but you know, there's just so many silly little things that could affect that.
The fact that we can that we are able to get this data and then process it all, make something make an image of a of another planet out of this extraordinary. Yeah.
>> Uh and Quint says that yes, hot chapters were the first 1995. So I was right about the timing.
>> 1995.
>> Yes. In my lifetime >> quite quite recent because I remember reading u my my first encyclopedia was before that and I just remember information from there and how much how many things we've discovered since. It's pretty incredible to see the the acceleration of of findings. I think I'm gonna have to make a hot Jupiter t-shirt.

>> Um but and then of course there's a whole science behind the the discovering these exoplanets. Amazing. But I think the other thing that stuck out to me I got here is the um is that she said yes to fields that nobody had heard of yet.
I thought that was just a really interesting thing that she you know that she was open to these these areas of science that didn't have a a p a clear path >> astroismology I wrote down that that is just >> how how does it sounds so cool actually >> it yeah it's extraordinary I just I loved I just again I love the science I love learning all this stuff as you say I love doing the homework work. I I so obviously I love all of the science and and tech and and and stuff, but there's there's also something about this that I love, which is the human element, which is this is like, you know, how do these people do it? Like, how do these people end up here? And almost always it's like this curiosity based. I think I'm just like I'm just conf I'm just confirming my own biases on these things, but the idea that you're just open to stuff and excited about stuff and that will lead you into all these it's always worked for me. So, I it's just kind of nice to hear that scientists also work the same way. So that I thought that was that was good.
>> Yeah. Yeah. People just come in uh from and and have these curiosities very early on. I really like uh hearing about that >> as well. And Sarano, I think my most memorable one was, you know, when we talked to um Sarah, right? uh the one with the material science >> and the the fact that she watched Iron Man and and for her that was like >> material sciences.
>> Yes. Like I I could build a better thing and and [clears throat] of course it made me also think oh wow somebody is so young she's she's working as a professional at Isa and her inspiration was >> start on that. Yeah. Yeah. [laughter] >> Yes.
>> My dad used to watch your show. I'm like, "Oh, god." Uh, yeah. Yeah. It's I I love how it >> I just I love how people get into this stuff as well. I just I love what inspires them into it. And I I just think it's just that it's just a reminder, I think, to everybody to sort of stay curious and to stay open to stuff because, you know, otherwise you'll miss these opportunities. If you're just complaining about your life and the way things are the whole time, you're not you're not open to opportunities. And I think the stuff comes up and you just sort of want to be able to do that. as you say, sometimes it helps if you've got some, you know, you've got you've got the the, you know, an income that allows you to do that, but even then, I think there's sometimes there's just you just got to >> I I I feel like I feel like you got to follow the stuff that you're interested in and the rest of it will fall into place. You know what I mean? If you're willing to do the work and you're willing to pursue stuff, it may not be, you know, the top of mind for people to start with, but I think eventually if you stick with stuff like that, it seems to come around. And qua said that it's leap of faith is needed and yeah I I I think that is doesn't mean that it will always work out the way you envision especially because there there is a survivor bias in this a lot because we hear >> yeah we're talking to people who it worked out for. Yes.
>> That's like the actors who always like take these crazy risks and they got their movie and it's like yeah there's like a thousand people who failed miserably doing the same thing.

And what actually for me the most memorable part she's like she's a physicist who works in medical field a very very specific uh interesting thing and the biggest hurdle for her research is getting a cat [snorts] >> I forgot about that my camera finding cats >> weird um yes it's because uh you have to have a cat with because she's doing cancer research so you have to have a cat with that type of cancer that she's looking for. And she gets the cat and and and that that is that is just such a you don't think you think about scientists and you think they're in their labs always doing something and she's waiting for the cat to be able to do something. And that's that's not what you think about when you think about sciences. And I I I just love that we get to talk to people and find out all the different things that happen.
>> She gets like calls from vets saying like, "Ah, you know what? little little Miffy's got whatever cancer and she's like I mean oh can we look after and and and then work on that it's amazing it's it's it's uh um that was I'd forgotten about that part of it uh I was just for me >> what got me was I always whenever I think of chem of uh radiation therapy um that wouldn't be chemotherapy would it chemotherapy is the chemical version radiation therapy I guess >> the I always think of it like a sledgehammer I always think of it like you just like you're nuking these people in the rough area of a of a tumor and [clears throat] hoping it's going to do something. Whereas this is like taking it from sledgehammer to um to a scalpel.
Like it's the idea that they can they've managed to become so specific in what they're able to do >> using particle physics which is pretty incredible. Hi hi Norway and hi Spain.
So, I'm just saying.

No, it's actually very good at picking out these specific things, which is >> it is fascinating how how many things we don't know yet. Um >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. >> Yes. and combining different fields that are very very specific and um advanced in research because cancer research and particle physics >> and then yes and there's so much that all the time is coming out because there's a lot of research on both and that like knowledge combination that where they merge that's just that is a very necessary but difficult field um to accomplish. So it's pretty amazing what they're doing. It's also a neat pitch for sort of the a diverse collection of people and interests because you just unless you've got people who are sort of stepping back and going like what if we took a bit of that and a bit of that and tried it with this that's you know there's a real >> I think that's what the science collector worry works is about and you do have uh these kind of think tanks what they're called to to have it is just >> skunk works >> very yes very difficult I think the difficulty is because uh when people are in a field and very high-end in a field it's very hard to step back and get so much in the other field to have a common language. I think this is where AI can really help to find because for AI to know >> uh fields in a in a in depth and try to find the commonalities and kind of as work as a brainstorming agent uh in these think tanks. I think that's is a very interesting possibility for it.

No, he's like, "Now you're accepted to be, you know, >> all right, kid. You can come sit with us if you want for a little bit."

He's using AI as part of his as a sort of a little side thing to try to figure out how to look for jobs that came up for for his partner, which I thought was just fascinating as well. And again, I think spoke to this sort of hacker mentality. Yeah.

It's like hacking, right? Say he's taking something that's designed for one thing and repurposing it for something else. I mean, he looked he looked at those satellites and went like, "Those little antennas there, what do you use them for? Oh, well then if you're not using them, you know, 80% of the time, can we uh like it's just it's just it's a mentality, a way of looking at it.
Someone sees AI and goes like, "Oh, I should get my my partner a job." Um maybe it speaks more to the relationship than the technology, but um but it's it's, you know, I love the idea that he's obviously constantly looking for ways of of, you know, bending things to his evil will. And I think that's kind of fun, too.

Yeah, this it was a little bit the same when we uh when I had the genius snacks uh Eddie is when we were at the table and he does have a um you know that kind of outspoken tendency the way you engage people he engages people as well with questions.

>> He said something really interesting about that which was that the quantum computing helped him understand quantum physics and and the [clears throat] quantum concepts >> which I thought was really really kind of a neat insight. So, it's something that I want to go back and do again because I I played with the original sort of hello world uh quantum computing um things that they had online. Um which I I don't think I really understood anyways. I just sort of did them >> by you know wrote but but um but I could see I I suddenly went oh actually that does make sense because I mean even programming helps you understand how computers work. I mean so why wouldn't why wouldn't quantum computing help you understand how you know how the how the the quantum world works? I mean that's right not the right >> yeah I mean quantum computing world quantum mechanics uh I don't know how how much of actually coding on on quantum does that help to understand the actual quantum >> well that's what that's what I found that's why I'm interested in looking into it because he was saying it helped him with the quantum mechanics side of it so that understanding um entanglement and you know spooky action from a from afar >> okay I I I wonder yeah because that's uh yeah That is that is a very spec specific way to approach it. And I wonder how much because you know quantum computing is like cubits and wave collapse and you know like having all the like all the possible possibilities at the same time and the you know the possibility of the answer >> that's how people been feeling since the 30s.
>> I know >> Einstein felt the same way. I mean, it was, you know, it's it's an itch, though. It's like a it's like a I feel like there's just something we're not quite >> That's why I love quantum physics because I don't think that there is anything else in history >> in sciences that has irked scientists more >> uh because when you read the book like quantum about that great debate between Einstein and Bo >> Yeah. It's an amazing book and it shows how many scientists who actually research it or who actually uh Yeah. you know from Planck like he was a very 19th century kind of type of a guy uh researching it and actually giving um a gateway towards quantum physics and plank constant and all these things right the plank size it's we have so much plank in it he hated it he didn't want it he didn't want it to be real and how many scientist >> plank didn't want it either >> no nobody wanted it like so many people didn't want it especially the older older generation were really reluctant to accept it. Uh and then you had this younger generation that is more bore and all the others who who kind of embraced it and started playing around with it.
And uh so there were these great debates and uh there were people aligned with Bore or with Einstein and when they did this these meetings where we now see all the photos of the scientists there are so many relationships that have broke up because one guy was supporting Boris Einstein and that was like it's a it's a debate that became very personal to a lot of people. So if I ever >> I mean yeah >> I would love to make a TV show like this kind of TV show. I mean I it's will never get funded but you show off exactly that um era of of physics because it's such an emotionally intense time >> a stage play would be way the way to go with that like I think that would be a really interesting stage play like >> okay I don't write plays and I don't go to theater so for me that does not connect emotionally but uh but like a show where uh you know you could explain actually quantum physics from this emergence of and uh and also play with this friends and relationships breaking apart. And while both, you know, Einstein and Neil Boore at the essence there were these really curious, passionate people and they were the same >> and they they kind of like died in the same questions and they were more alike than they were more different. Uh but but then it caused this whole upheaval in a way their their argument where they were heading this argument. I just love the idea emotionally but also as a vehicle to explain quantum physics.
>> No, I love that. I got that. God, that'd be amazing. Count me in. Um yeah, I think that's again it's as you say, it's got to be be a tough one to sell, wouldn't it? But I feel like >> maybe that's a little indie film that needs to be made. I I think what's neat about this stuff and what's one of the our book our next book club we're talking about doing um uh oh next book club is is Hitchhiker's Guide, isn't it?
>> Yes, the next book club the the general read is Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

There's an art to the science. there is a there is a politics to the science that we that that you know layman like myself >> sort of I don't I was not aware of it like I thought science was science that's it science and that's right and it's or it's wrong simple as that but no it's like no screw you I don't want to do that experiment again because I think you're wrong and like there's a there's a weird stuff it was about oh I know what it was about it was about the um um prons prons in the brain >> um and they couldn't believe that there would be a self-replic licating protein.
They just couldn't they couldn't believe that that was the and so people would flatly refuse to accept the evidence as it showed up. Um yeah, the idea that people there we're still humans even for scientists.
>> Yeah, I I I really love then reading about these theories that people had hard time accepting especially counterintuitive theories. I think that 20th century had that with quantum relativity and chaos theory. Uh >> oh god. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
>> Yeah. Because these are just such especially quantum goes very very deep into being anti-intuitive. Like we just just can't.
>> I think it goes out of its way to be difficult.
>> It really does. It does feel like like it's it's exactly made in a way to befuddle scientists because >> and it's not observational. It's not well not at first it wasn't observational right they had to figure out how to how to look at this stuff and I think it came from there was a world of classical physics where they it's like well look I I I drop it it falls apple you know Newton all that kind of stuff and then all of a sudden there's like well we're doing the math and this is what's happening you're like nah it's impossible math's got to be wrong you know what I mean so >> yeah it comes from uh plank the the black body radiation and all that kind of research and then the maths that came out and yes and later they started uh like confirming it with experiments.
>> Was the ultraviolet was the ultraviolet catastrophe or something? They had a wonderful name.
>> There was something about it. Yes. Uh >> they couldn't figure out why it wasn't why it didn't keep bumping up and instead it was coming out in these quantum. Yeah, it's amazing. Um yeah, Jenn of Canadia. Um uh should really be Caneria, but um uh prons are terrifying. Yes, they are. Pon super dangerous and infectious. Yeah, it's um basically mad cow disease is the kind of that's the kind of thing you're talking about. But there's this book, >> fabulous book uh >> I'm going to have to look it up, but uh there's this amazing book on the subject which which I read which I just >> blew me away and partially >> well we can put it as a as our non-fiction read at some point as well and discuss it >> done.

So instead of taking antibiotics, I just like sledgehammer that you mentioned is gonna be a very specific viral agent that actually heals you from inside specifically. Uh so so yeah so that that was very um impressive because everybody is talking about superbugs and how antibiotics are not working but at the same time science is working from a different angle and how we repurpose viruses is just like such an insane for me concept. They're like little robots then that just Yeah.

We cut down all the trees and put these massive fields of wheat and then go like now what do we do? It's getting too hot and was not, you know, so it's just the idea that we like here's a crazy idea. like that's it's how things were except it was you know we're changing the the random stuff to things we could eat.

Uh and uh it it just made me think about like oh yeah shallies and then and such a nice existence before predators are there. But in terms of biosphere, trees have not always been here.

So you become like just this glorious mycelium uh you know there's something sort of something sort of um something sort of avatar I've watched too much of uh you know the um Last of Us to for me to get comfortable >> with that concept right now yeah I think yeah I don't know what the best Yeah that's a whole other thing >> okay your favorite part from uh viral chat >> oh god uh I look I just love the interaction I love interaction between two people who obviously love viruses like and I think that was the appeal to me was like there's two people who just have the oddest love um do they write little Valentine card to viruses every year because they love them um you know they just James when I was introduced to James originally he was on YouTube doing outreach because in England the process is that if you you know they're they're paying for your university or they used to um pay for your university and as a result you have to do outreach and that was normally done in the in the way you'd go to a school and talk to 10 kids about something and he was like, well, why talk to 10 kids when you could talk to a thousand or a million or the global population of kids and he would do these these little videos about how much about just how fascinated he was with with viruses. And then when I you know when we had John on and he was talking about his original um cucumber viruses.

>> Um again I just picked up the same kind of love for this stuff. So seeing these two very smart science brains who've gone in very different directions but still shared this the same sort of passion for the >> for the for the the viruses at our world. I I I think that was the biggest thing I got out of that. I mean I I >> yeah there's so much I feel like that that should be a series unto itself.
There's so much stuff to explore there.
um >> yeah, >> you know, with the with the bacterial phages um and and and how we can be using them to to to to fix some of the problems we've created with our own with antibiotics and stuff. So, yeah. No, amazing amazing.

The other thing that struck me about that one was the variety of things that both John and James were interested in and doing.

I mean, I just feel like he's constantly trying different things and doing >> different things. He lived in France for a while. He's uh diving underwater like he has like the underwater but but the shipwreck diving uh license and he did that. He's Yeah. professional diver and a professional pilot >> and uh basically it's pretty much impossible to catch him. Yeah, >> because he's somewhere diving or flying all the time.
>> I I feel like James will be there eventually. Like James will eventually be probably hurling himself out of planes and stuff as well. I I like I I just feel like he's the same kind. It's I love having the excuse of science >> um and technology to bring these people together. But uh and speaking of the science, you know, one of the things that really stood out for me in that chat as well was how we have not just we've not just >> managed to sort of stop HIV AIDS in its tracks.
We're now using it as a vector to solve considerably more complex problems because of all the things we've learned because of the money and research and time that we put into trying to solve this >> horrendous um >> and this this is a vector to our next guest because that's a direct vector into Frank because >> look at you and segue queen today you are. He has solved it. He has solved this problem.
It's it's cured. He doesn't need more re like research money that it's not a path. It's already a cure, but we don't have enough money because it's too expensive and it's it's just one time and it's cured. That's why pharmaceuticals are not investing in it and it's too expensive for for government to do, too expensive for the people who have the reality.

>> Yeah, I don't understand it. Yes. Yeah, >> we have this. We have solutions. And he's talking about how many other uh diseases like this, genetic ones >> that they just pretty much have sold.
They just don't have the funding to enact them. It's insane for me. And it's and I think it's even more than funding because I think what's so terrifying to me and kind of that shakes the foundations of everything for me and what I came out of this chat with was the how wrong we've got things.

>> Why is money a priority? Like why is that why is that why is that seen as a what is the bet that that oh we're doing our our gross national product is up. Why aren't we talking about how many kids we've saved?
Why aren't we talking about how many diseases we've cured as a as a as a gross natural product? And I mean, instead of spending, imagine if the whole concept of instead of like spending vast amounts of money on bombing people we don't like, what if we took that money and cured all of their kids of of incurable diseases and then we could win the war by being the country that saved that that helped them the most. I mean, that kind of stuff.
Like it's just our whole system is so it reminds me of this story reminds me of a story of a of a young woman going to visit her brother in New York City and she's and it may be a fake a fake story I don't know but um but the idea was that she grew up in this little tiny farm in the middle of freaking nowhere in a little town and she shows up on the bus and she arrives at you know Port Authority and in in New York City and there's a man lying on the street and so she immediately runs up to find out if he's okay and and and and her brother is out there looking for her, trying to find where Oh my god, what happened? She got off the bus. No, where's she gone?
Well, she's taking him off to have to to get uh you know to to get to get lunch and to sort him out with some clothes and and he's like, "What? What are you what are you doing?" And she's like, "Well, he was in trouble." And he's like, "What? What are you nuts? You don't go running around helping everybody." And she's like, "Well, why why not?" Like, and it it that perception twist where you suddenly go like, "Yes, what the hell are we doing?
we're stepping over people and stuff, you know.
>> I I I understand what you're saying. I think that um >> well, it is how to say >> there's a practicality to it. I understand. Yes. No, it's just that this the structures that we devised as economic structures through our lives starting from you know tribes and then all these kind people had a very very different economic structure which is going forwards the food sources and very limited um amount of possessions and everything. the science that we created and everything that we have created was based in a different economic forms that then uh have certain consequences. So I will not go into the whole you know how economies have changed from slave-based economy in ancient Rome to you know uh later on surf uh economies and and this that but economic reality is an economic reality and capitalism has allowed us to create more wealth in the world than he have ever had and that is true that it has uh lifted off um more people out of poverty than it has ever had. uh if you just look at how how people how many little positions they had if you look just at the photos of people 100 years ago and and that so so so there are these realities however at the same time I do believe that there is a point to it where as we are creating this immense wealth enormous amounts of it how it's being redistributed I it's >> it's at >> trillionaires >> like uh yes where we're where you know when it becomes when >> people like these companies cannot pay livable wage to people and the CEOs are getting all these bonuses and everything that's where the system breaks and that there's something is wrong within and I understand it's not as simple the incentives everything there there are structures around it uh there's there's just a lot of complexity around I don't think it's Oh, you know, be a good Samaritan to everyone is a solution. It is a nice thought, but you're like you don't go out into the street and help people and and even if you could there are just limits of what we understand, what we can do as an individual. So I think it is much more complex as a system. But I think that there is something fundamentally wrong when you think about that. we have not research level things like when I understand when people say like okay we're researching to to find this disease it's very difficult because that can last decades uh but we have a solution and because it's not profitable it's not going that's where I feel like okay then that that does not make sense >> I think it might be profitable anyways like I just don't think they're interested in it's it's a again it's a it's a it's a different I mean it depends what you mean by profitable right I mean like if there's going to people alive and contributing to society in a way that they wouldn't have otherwise. I mean these are kids in most cases, right? These are childhood immune uh immune issues. Um so you know just think about what what kind of income they bring with them in just in tax alone as opposed to like just trying to keep them comfortable. Now there's money being spent on that too which is a completely waste of money to some extent if if they're not going to you know in the eye of the government they're not going to be any you know a contributing part of society. Yeah. I I just it really makes you know it does make you wonder and question you know our you what our priorities are and and and what we should be what we should be doing with them. The idea that we've got a trillionaire who could cure all of these things but instead is just amassing more and more money just seems there's something fun there's something fundamentally wrong with the way things are. I think and I think we're I I think there's a very good chance that'll change in our lifetime because I think that I think more and more people are beginning to start seeing the cracks in that in that kind of just sort of adhering to the to the to the normal logic of just you know >> yeah I think it's just historical pretty much reality if you read about Babylon it had the same thing basically from from the early civilization when there's >> um inequality and wealth that happens there's always a tension between those people have and have not. It's the same in Egypt. You look at ancient civilizations. What the biggest things that people like a new king comes in and tries to say something. It's about these kind of laws of of of how do we how do we diminish an inequality in some ways and reforms are about that. It is a it is a historical constant. It's not what it's not new.
>> It's just the amount of wealth is new.
uh um and the amount of like different different things that we can we're doing as a society is new but uh but the the core debate and issue is not new. So >> but in the guilded age there was only so much that those rich people could do right that just because of technology whereas the amount they could do now is extraordinary like think about it like I just >> at the same time it's extraordinary what they can do for themselves. we can buy like before that you couldn't buy art, you couldn't buy all these things. So, so it's like it's growth goes in both sides. So, >> there's just the what is being wealthy back in Babylon or back 200 years ago is very different from the opportunities of being wealthy right now. So, so there's there's all these things and uh it's just I'm not saying what is right, what's wrong like I feel like there is something fundamentally wrong when we have this kind of situation but I would not go very quickly to prescribe of how do we change it because yes it's it's complex system the fact that solution came out from the fact that we have more wealth and generating it and that there wouldn't have been solution without the system that we have it's didn't didn't come out from nowhere. Nobody was researching 200 years ago with this amount of money and this kind of technology uh these diseases. Nobody had that like Yeah. So so so you have to think about this other part as well. I just try to think all these in systems and not prescribe any simplistic solutions or um ideas how it like oh it's so easy we could just solve it. If it was, I think people would um but yes, Frank Stall's talk was was where I was really thinking of >> uh yeah like this this needs this particular part should be changed maybe you know if you know somebody uh really uh rich and actor thinks maybe we can do a fundraiser with them and uh and you know some some some of these >> people who get you know wealth is not only the trillionaires wealth is also you know in in acting circles and and and like there's there's just like a lot of people in entertainment are also um having incredible wealth in entertainment. I mean in sports I don't want to pick on the trillionaires. I just [laughter] >> there's only one and he was there for a bit until the until it all crashed. So >> yeah, that's down like 34% or something or 43 some crazy number >> something like that. I mean it was to be expected because it was a hyped up IPO anyway. mean, it's it's not so much a meme. It's just the fact that because it has such a specific following and sometimes divisive following, you have a very it's it's not it's not a normal company because it is attached to a persona that is very divisive to people.
>> Uh and that just uh yeah, it was to be expected that that people would speculate especially with this IPO.
Well, and I also I I mean I don't want to belittle I mean this I can't remember who somebody was just mentioning uh telephone Jack was talking about it but um you know I he you know it's true that Starlink is absolutely fantastic. It's been absolutely amazing. It's been it's been um instrumental around the world for for for people. Um uh but and and again the the EV evolution the EV revolution basically in North America was started by him. I I'm not belittling what he's done. I just I just feel like at a certain point, how many how much money do you need? And I was saying that before long before we got to trillions.
>> Um but you know, again, yeah, I'm policy will be very interesting to to see as well. Um and uh SRS Atlantis says, "I wonder if we could have a Canadian voluntary fund to help Frank Stall's research."
>> Well, it doesn't need more funds for research per se. It's um it's what we're talking about is making research into actually actionable thing. And u we could come up with some ideas for how to get the word out that hopefully the right people would hear >> like I'm saying like if we get to certain people we can do a fundraiser >> for certain things uh who that people are interested because some actors do that like JR Bourne I think he's done that with um fibriosis something like that I just >> fibrosis is um uh yeah I mean look I look I think that's I think that That's I think that's one of the appeals of of of fame I think as well is that is that people can can use that to to point in the right direction. I think Roger he said um for cystic fibrosis and how far they are. Uh and I I am very willing to try and find ways and venues to connect people who are interested in certain >> areas to and they have the audience to enable to do some sort of a fundraiser uh >> activity. do a couple of maybe we could do a couple of episodes that focus on that like a couple focuses that just that just talk about different things that could be >> let's meet with Frank and we can see >> oh not just for Frank I mean just in general looking out to see what other Yeah.
I am all for it. So if they need months of dance training just to to get it like and they can get it in half a day on the ISS is it worthwhile?

That's liinal horror. uh and uh and and and yeah, so for me what I want wanted to say in this long- winded sentences uh is that when I wrote about back rooms, the back rooms reacted psychologically to people as well. There is a certain responsibility in these uh creating this technology. This technology gets created in 20 30 years.
That's the that's the timelines from the concept to actually launching and and and having some data like these are insanely long. Sometimes it's a whole career of a person is just one thing. um having something wrong happening in that is really detrimental.

And uh that actually ties an interesting t little tangent that I will allow myself into project Hail Mary where there was a big discussion about um in Hail Mary of what kind of technology do they need to use for uh for science there the instruments and this woman who came in and said like you cannot just create it because uh it's going to it's not going to work these what we have the things that instruments have worked with gravity uh we've researched them, we've used them. There's like thousands and thousands of hours of scientists using them and perfecting them through decades and they work. So that's why they added the spin gravity in Hail Mary >> uh to make these instruments work off the shelf instruments. That's what they went for and that was such a crucial little thing and um >> Oh yeah, that is a good thing, isn't it?
>> Yes, that that ties in and that's like just thinking about it like that ties in with what Bart was saying. he wants and we always need new technology coming out but I understand the other part as well.
Uh in Hail Mary it's even more because it's you know saving the world.

But I can allow myself just a little bit geeking out from time to time about show this is for it's a geek out.
We I literally called it a geek out.
>> Yeah. Uh it is it is a geek out. And uh and yeah, so that's that's the thing that's that's where this new technology versus old technology. And that's where I appreciate that we have now reusable rockets because that's also a big thing.
But building a rocket is really expensive. It takes a lot of effort. You saw how many people are involved in any project >> and how many of them blow up.
>> Yeah. But seriously, [laughter] yes. Yeah, it does happen. And then whatever payload is there, so all these instruments are there all also blown up.
So you lose everything.
>> It's like the risk has got to be insane.
>> Exactly. So that's why lowering lowrisk technology, that's what they're go for.
Um and and that's a big kind of contentment point where you know like like contention point, not contentment, it's exactly anti-contentment. It's contention point between um the new technology and uh and using the reliable. Yeah. Well, and again, it's a bit like McKay. I mean, everyone's gonna all the new people coming up are going to think they've got the latest and greatest g whiz factor, but but the reality is, you know, if this stuff, if it works, don't mess with it. I mean, in a lot of cases, um, especially when it comes to the amount of, you know, government funding and stuff and funding in general that gets involved in this.
So, yeah, Bart was I mean, but Bart is also at the same time, you also need people like Bart who are going to uh try to come up with new ways of doing stuff.

>> I Yeah, I mean I the idea of sort of flying a quantum uh what would it be called? Uh like a gravity meter. Um trying to figuring out how these massive volcanoes are still sitting on the top of this thin crust. The idea that we've got a lava lamp happening under there which is just wonderful sort of image.
Uh yeah, I mean I he's there's a ton again a ton of stuff going and then of course he's got the whole history element of it as well where he's actually he's a fascinating person from that that whole concept of like how do we upgrade without losing track of the of the of the of the uh reliability of stuff because while he's pitching this this you know quantum gravity meter thing, he's also delving into the history of these recordings with his whole uh golden calf stuff where he he's looking at this this old 1920s30s technology that was that was you know manhandled around a the the the the Arctic in a in a submarine. I mean I I just >> I so I think there's a real respect there that he's got that he's a perfect person to be selling this stuff because he's got a respect for the historical um elements involved here and the ingenious way that they made this stuff work. his video. There's only so many experiments that can be brought and done there because it's just the logistics logistics and time of um astronauts. But >> how big a space you've got?

Uh and she was just talking about how a lot of these proposals are not really adjusted to that to the microgravity to reality of ISS and how she wants to help scientists to create these proposals better because um it's something that also connects to what Neil Melville does with all these >> projects that they because it's also microgravity experiments. It's just that they're very short.

Uh there there are food safety issues in America and I think there when I went there and traveled there was quite interesting how different the food is.

I don't I don't want to accidentally say more or less on one card than the other. So, I was like, you know, going back and forth making sure that I, you know, that even if I didn't say the same thing, I was at least, you know, they were equal amounts of, you know, affection and how proud I am of them and all that kind of stuff. So, yeah, >> it's very sweet.
>> Um, yeah, it's really cute. They uh they've got a they've got a thing called a pre this weekend. They have a pre like so you basically you drink cheaper at home and then you go out. Oh, that that that that's how that's how we always did in Lithuania. We grew up poor. So, you always drink at home first and then go out and maybe buy one drink at max because nobody had money.
