We're going to talk uh uh William Shatner and Magic the Gathering. We can't get away from Magic the Gathering time and a beautiful cover for Amazing Spider-Man 1000. Uh >> and the Marvel shakeup, which I want to talk about that uh when we get to the news, but uh but yeah, that's it. Like boom, there we go. We're in. People know what we're talking about. Let's talk about some nerd news.
Of course, the first news that we're talking about this evening, the big comic book news that come out, uh, Marvel Comics Jacob.
>> So, uh, TV chief Brad, uh, I want to make sure I say this right, Windenbomb takes on publishing as veteran Dan Buckley exits Marvel. Um, if you go on to read this article, basically they explain that it something uh Buckley's exit has been in the works for a little while and he's not leaving immediately. He'll be leaving uh next year, mid next year. So, he's got a year for the new guy to learn the ropes and uh scroll back up and uh and uh and and take over publishing. There's uh a couple interesting things about this article. Uh the one thing, this is from the Hollywood Reporter. Uh one thing that has been pointed out by a couple news sources, the word publisher has been taken out of the title. So, >> uh that's that's very interesting. Like what does that what is Marvel saying?
like um they don't care about publishing anymore. This is just about maintaining the rights of the characters. Uh I don't know. Um, I also want to point out before before you give your feedback, I did, as we discussed, I reached out to people who've been on the show, >> friends of ours, >> uh, people who haven't been on in a long time, >> uh, that we know for sure have worked for Marvel. Uh, one person in particular, you wanted me to reach out, but I reached out to, uh, a good handful of people that have worked for Marvel, and I'm gonna be honest, uh, not many people responded, and I don't blame them. This is a developing thing, and some of these people still occasionally get work uh, from the big mouse, as it were. Uh, the only person who commented on it is really good friend of the show.
Um, oh god, Rich Dick, >> who just recently wrote the Venom comic that was out earlier this year. So, you know, he has done quite a few things for Marvel, you know, the the the Star-Lord comic that you love so much. Yes.
>> And he basically did respond with, I think a lot of people >> I think you'll see a lot of people sharing it and a lot of people condemning it, but most of all, I think you will see a lot of people pretending to know more than they do about it. I don't know what this means for Marvel and nobody outside of Marvel and Disney really do either.
>> Yeah. I all I know is I love the brand, the characters, and especially the creators, editors, and staffers. I know who work there. They're good people, and I'm hopeful that whoever is in charge does write by them.
>> So, yes. So, thanks, Rich, for that that comment. Um, you know, some people didn't respond at all. Some people basically said no comment. I will not, you know what I'm saying, not their names off of it, but Rich was kind enough to reply. He's a good friend of ours. So, um, yeah, I and I, he makes an excellent point. There will be a lot of people like us who will be on the internet speculating about this and making comments, but um, >> yeah, >> but it is very curious. So, I'm just kind of what what are your thoughts when you saw this?
>> When I saw this, I immediately thought to a recent conversation we had with a great guest here >> on Superheroes Speak. Uh, and I wonder if this is actually an opportunity for that to improve. I know in our >> private chat, you know, you're like, hm, public, you know, TV guy taking over publishing.
>> Um, I mean, yeah, we'll see how much that matters. It could not matter a lot.
You know, Rich is absolutely correct.
You know, I I don't know how or why this happened. He could just want to move on to something differently. And so another guy in the company says, "Hey, I you know, I could do that. So no problem."
Uh but it could you it could it's going to mean change though. You know that that's that's what we do know is we don't know.

>> You know, I'm here to tell you that Captain Obvious. Uh but I do think it could be perhaps opportunity for good change.
>> Yeah, >> there is such a thing.
And I would hope that that whole comic um system, you know, with the catalog and the really the fans response not being taken to an account whether a book ultimately continues on. I think that's troublesome.
So maybe this could be opportunity that gets fixed.
>> I I wholeheartedly agree. Um welcome in Cassan. Good to see you my friend. Um, and it is an opportunity. I've been thinking about it a lot as well. And I think there's a couple issues. I think one of the issues is the in today's world the and I understand it's how it's worked forever but the dependency on the comic book shops you know like >> they got to be pushing these things through uh Amazon and stuff like that you know and it's there's got to be more online ads you had pointed out um we had talked about how it's weird that they have these show these Marvel shows on uh Disney Plus, but they're not like saying during the show, oh, if you like the show, go check out the comic. And then like, >> yeah, >> the week after you said that, they did.
They had an ad popped up before Daredevil, you know, go click scan this QR code to go see more, read more on on Daredevil. So like, yeah, they need to definitely take advantage of how the world has changed and marketing wise, which I don't think they have. You know, they're still stuck in the 80s9s model of the comic book shop and >> yeah, >> now they're depending on the shop to pre-order a bunch of books because yeah, um, our guest Dan Slott, I'll say his name, is it made an excellent point.
It's like, you know, it's you're looking at these sales numbers, but those sales numbers aren't how many people actually bought the book. It's how many comic book shops bought it and how much how many copies they bought, you know, cuz like once Marvel sells it to the comic book shop, they're done. That's, you know, now it's the shop selling it to make the profit.
So, >> you know, there there's a piece missing there. And I feel like that's the problem. Marvel's selling to the shops, they're not selling to the readers. But if they were selling to the readers, the readers would be more >> uh willing to pre-order and put it on the pole lists. But I digress. We're talking about the shakeup that yes, this is an opportunity for them to change those things. And I don't know what a guy who used to run TV is going to do in that respect. Uh it's interesting. I don't you know I I don't >> I mean listen it's not like Marvel's in a super great spot now anyway.
>> Yes.
>> So I mean I I guess I think the timing is kind of good. Um they're getting the [ __ ] kicked out of them by the absolute DC universe.
>> Yeah.
>> Um people aren't exactly happy with the MCU right now.
>> Five dollar book $5 comic books have me and a lot of others turned off.
So, >> let's be honest, right? You and I have both worked for big corporations in our careers.
>> And you can easily look at what's going on and say, "Yeah, like they were the top dog for a while. Marvel was the top dog and then the Absolute Books came out and now they're not anymore." And so it's so easy to say the the record keepers at Disney were like, "Yeah, we got to do something, you know, let's let's shake up the who's running the comics." Like, and that's all the speculation you need. it it like yeah maybe the guy decided to walk to to retire and step down but let's be honest you know there's a really good chance that they sold him like it's time you step down you know I'm sure he got I'm sure he got a golden parachute you know and maybe he's going to have an opportunity to go start his own business or work for one of the smaller publishers and do something but uh but yeah I think I my opinion just an opinion. I have no proof of it that uh yeah, they just went, you know, uh this guy's got to go because we got to sell more books, you know, because again, it's also look, they just announced the midnight, which >> from what I'm learning about that, it's not what people are expecting, and I don't think it's going to do well, >> but I digress.

>> So, um All right.
Should we Should we see what Cassand has to say here?
>> Yeah.
>> Wouldn't Amazon charge more off the top?
Another unfair advantage is that Amazon wouldn't pay anything upfront. A better deal than the local comic shops. No.
Don't you see that is where you're wrong? They're going to just sell the book for whatever the cover price is.
Like Amazon does not up the prices of of things like that. But if it's a direct sale, so it's there's people are going on Amazon and buying and it's going directly to Marvel. Marvel is then shipping it out, you'll get a better idea of who's actually reading the books instead of waiting for, you know, instead of, oh, how many copies of of Spectacular Spider-Man number two are sitting on the shelves and people aren't actually reading. You know, I think that's the thing cuz that it gives you a better gaugement of what people are actually liking and reading. Like, yeah, I understand like if they let's say this shop orders 15 copies of a book and they sell out and they order more. Yes. Okay.
That's that's a good um read on it, but you're not getting the actual numbers.
If people are buying direct from Marvel, they're getting the actual who's reading this. So, you know, I just it's just it's the way the world is. People don't go to shops anymore. I don't have I don't have time to go to my local comic book shop and it's sad. And I'm pretty sure the one that I used to go to closed >> the other day and it looked like it was closed down.
>> So, >> I have a lot of shops um not close to me at all, but kind of in the vicinity though. And I really was shocked and I cannot remember the exact number but I want to say there's less than a thousand comic book shops nationwide. I was really >> Yeah.
>> um a guest to learn that, but unfortunately like Dave um because there's not If there was one like right in my town, okay, maybe. But there's not. And the $5 per issue, the pacing of um the stories, the stuff that just happens behind the scene with comics, it it does feel better to just say, "Hey, let me h let me get this trade. let me uh get this Marvel subscription for the app and you know so I can just kind of read whole swaths of runs and and get the whole picture without spending all the money.
>> You know the generational thing the kids are all digitals on the phone on the iPads.
Um so but the importance of comic book shops to the overall culture I certainly understand it. Um, you know, I understand uh they just have to treat that stuff more as collectible, I guess, you know, and not really and not really everything gauges on whether these physical copies sell because yeah, when we talked to Dan Slot, I asked him about digital, I was surprised that his answer was like, yeah, digital.
>> Yeah, exactly.
>> Long story short, didn't move the needle, >> right?
>> Uh, which I don't understand at all. How could probably the most popular form of the medium not >> much? I don't think it's the most popular. Like I know young people that still order like might not go to a shop, but they'll order physical books. They like to read the books.
>> Sure. No, I I totally get that.

>> Stay tuned. As they used to say in the television world. Um and real quick then there's a trend by Jen Alpha to go back to physical books. Ebook are dying medium because there's too much slash slush there now. Yes. I I do think and people that are collectors still it's it's the collecting aspect of comics that has made it popular for so long too as well. You don't have that with digital. It's not doesn't feel the same.
All right, let's let's move on. Let's move on to an AI story because I want to talk a little AI. Um >> well, yeah, let's talk about what I think you're about to >> William Shatner, Captain Cook himself. I don't know why I'm talking like Skeletor, but >> yeah.
>> Uh they're Magic the Gathering is doing a Star Trek set. Like stop it, guys.
Stop it. Like just I just want to play Magic. I don't like the Marvel stuff was cool, but stop it. Anyway, >> I'm not with you. I I'm digging on I dig on some universes beyond, but uh yeah, Star Trek, you know. So they released >> I'm on a magic card.
>> They really, you see, I was trying to do Shatner and I came out Skeletor. They released the image of his card um coming soon and Shatner replied uh over I was it on X? I don't remember which social media platform it was that um let me see if they have it.
Yeah, it was on X.
>> Yeah. Uh, he basically said he doesn't like it because it looks AI to him.
And here's the thing, I'm not sure. It kind of looks like a painting to me. It kind of looks like actually >> No, that's a Magic the Gathering art.
It's there. There's no maybe that was done by a person. I was going to say it what it look what it at the worst it could be is they took a photo and threw a a filter on it to make it look like a painting. But most likely what it is is that an artist took a reference photo from the show and painted that because that's what it looks like to me as a painter. That's what that image looks like to me. So, I'm not sure why Bill is um so up in arms about it, you know.
>> I mean, that the artist has got to be absolutely mortified that >> Yeah.
>> the subject matter uh is saying this is terrible.
>> Yeah.
>> Uh so, I'm sorry. Uh I'm not saying I disagree. Like, I'm not quite sure what's going on with Spock. He's got some sort of gangster lean check off.
Looks like he's about to puke on the console. Like >> I'm not exactly sure what they're going for, but I'm not William Shatner. Who gives a [ __ ] Why is >> it feels like it's a screen capture from a scene. I know you're not a Treky, but from a scene where they're fighting another ship cuz he's like he's leaning forward. He's definitely like in, you know, he's he's something's going on. It's an energetic scene >> and >> um and anyone who's a Treky knows the you know when they're fighting things and oh they go like that when everyone on the set goes like this or like this when there's an explosion because the ship is being shooken and so shaken.
Yeah, shaken. So, um that's what it kind of looks like.
the people in the background are doing the the like, oh, we've been hit lean and Shatner's, you know, Kirk Kirk is like leaning forward like ah, you know, fire. So, that's that's what it looks like to me that it's one of those scenes from Star Trek. And again, it does look like um you know, there's a there's a trick in um painting where you take a photo, you turn it black and white so you get your values and then you paint in your darkest uh you use that as your your guide. you paint in your darkest colors uh where you know where it's the black and the grays and then you you paint in all your light colors and that it that's the style it looks like like as somebody who paints it that's definitely what it looks like to me what they did. Um so I don't know why Shatner I think it's here's the thing we live in a world where we're getting to the point where if you don't like something you're just going to say that's AI right? Like I really feel like that's the world we're in right now.

>> Sure. Yeah. No, absolutely. You know, a lot is blamed on on AI, but you know, uh, Magic the Gathering though specifically is like no, we're no AI here.

>> So, to do this, to make this art and then just again to have William Shatner come say he thinks that is a grave insult. And that is I'm just what kind of a person is William Shatner? Right.
That says a lot about, you know, so I guess uh I'm believing the George Teay uh side of the story because they didn't really get along.

I'm just saying for the artist, it's got to really really suck.

So, uh, so >> I mean, I I've sat in the same room, you know, as some of these artists. I believe that they have come out and said they're not going to use AI like they have offici they made an official statement about it.
>> So not like us we we will we will use AI >> like >> before it starts using us >> on Sunday. Look, and I want to address something like someone who will remain nameless uh a fellow podcaster um had said something to me the other day about like as people have noticed some of the thumbnails are AI.
In fact, um, uh, Dan pointed out in the interview that I made the AI thumbnail of him crying, you know, uh, >> or begging, you know, and like it and it it it was all in good fun and we're, you know, he's cool about it. We we talked about it, but um, it was pointed out by a fellow podcast.
Oh, what's with all the AI slop? It's like it's just the thumbnails because I don't have time to constantly be making thumbnails and I have ideas that I want to see come to life and so I just I use an I'm not I'm not going to lie. But here's the thing because we we talk obviously in the show about ethical use or whatever. No one's losing a job over it because it's me. I'm the one losing the job. I'm the one who makes the thumbnails.
>> Yeah. If I do something to save time, I'm taking myself out of a job. It's not like >> Some people want to >> Some people want to fire themselves.
>> Exactly. So, I'm firing myself from that job uh so that uh I can, you know, prod get more content out uh on a daily basis. So, um so yeah, >> but we aren't accusing real art of being AI.
>> Yes. You know, Travis Mitchell says, "There's a lot of people who can be awful, but it's justified because they're old."
>> H Have you Travis, have you ever met William Shatner? Um, I have met him at many a convention and uh let's just say I don't say I don't think he's a I don't think he's as terrible as some people make him out to be. I think he was a bit of a diva at at some point.
But he is all business when he works cons. So I will say that much about him.
You know, signs the autograph, next person. Signs the autograph, next person. Not a lot of chitchat. So what are you going to do? Moving on.
Speaking of AI art and things that could possibly be improved with AI, Marvel has a big milestone uh issue for Spider-Man coming out.
Oh, that's a straight nutshot from you, Dave.

>> Oh, and look at the picture. It's ready for one, two. Okay.
>> The official cover was released. Uh, and uh it was done by um uh believe it or not, John Ramita Jr. of all people. And uh so yeah, this is the cover that he did for Amazing Spider-Man 1000 coming soon to comic book shops near you. Um before I get sick, what did you think of the cover there, Dodd? Yeah. No, that looks peculiar. Peculiar. I mean, particularly the pose. It's from an interesting angle. Um, hard to imagine like what angle anyone would be in to ever see that. Um, I mean, but otherwise, hey, I suck at art, so I mean, it looks like Spider-Man and all the, you know, looks like a purse that just But the pose looks very uncomfortable.
>> Um, Spider-Man usually does like a oneoff here kind of thing that uh, so yeah, that is I don't know, maybe he's coming in for the kill. him and Mary Jane are out on a date and I don't know >> then one of their passionate dates.
That's all they're allowed to do anymore, though.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Um here here's the thing. Um it is a very awkward pose. It's not like it's not a Spider-Manike pose. It is not something that a normal person would do.
Like you're not going to jump like that and then shoot both webs at the same time. It's awkward all around, but not only is it awkward all around, like it's not dynamic. There's nothing about this cover that makes me go, "Oh, I got to run and get that book," you know? Um, and I'm shocked, right? Because usually when they do uh big books like this uh they do a tribute, you know, to covers past like Amazing 15, Amazing uh Fantasy 15, you know, where he's swinging with the guy under his arm.
They've done that cover uh quite a few times over the years in different ways. Or uh Spider-Man number one from the 90s is a cover that's been uh homaged quite a few times by Todd McFarland. Um, the Amazing Spider-Man 300, another Tom McFarland cover has been homaged quite a few times. Uh, there's a very famous hobgoblin um cover where uh it's a like looks like a painting that's been homage. So, it's just like >> do some like you could do something like that or just like this is a cover.
No offense to John Ramita Jr. because his father was probably in my top five uh Spider-Man artists, but this is a cover where it's like, "Oh, it's John Ramita Jr. publish it."
Like, probably was not given back to him with notes or anything. It was just that's the name is it's synonymous with Spider-Man.
>> You know, we're going to publish it.
That That's my feeling. And hey, I'm not I'm not trying to be mean. I just that's the way it looks to me, you know.

>> Oh, yeah. Like >> he's squeezing into a porta potty. And Travis, it's important to note there's a ver there's a visual effect for decades that have been AI.
Why is there sim? Oh, what are simulations for example? Uh CG. Is it AI though? I don't know. Um going back to >> a point. It is.
>> Um but yeah, I don't I just I don't I don't get it, Don. I don't like there is another cover that they they showed. Let me let me scroll back up to that.
Um that's that's a cover that's dynamic that gets my interest, you know, like that works for me.

Uh, >> oh. Um, so yeah, like I like just Marvel just published this one.

That's an important factor to keep in mind, boys and girls. Uh, The Mandalorian Goku uh came out this weekend and Don and I both went to see it. We're both wearing our Star Wars shirts that we wore when we went to the theater. So, you can tell we're super excited. I actually just saw it today.
this afternoon um due to crazy family stuff. Um but before we get into it, as we always do, let's talk the numbers. Um I for I shouldn't have closed everything. Let's start with the box office, of course. Uh this is Let me refresh just to make sure. Sometimes the numbers do refresh. Nope. Um, this is as of the stream, so this could go up because obviously they don't have all of Sunday's numbers yet, but 165 million. I would also like to point out that their budget was 165 million. So, as of right now, they've broken even with the budget.
Uh, and then over on Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 62 critic score with an 89 audience score. that seems about right anymore with how these things go on the uh with these kind of reviews and I'm like critics will find any reason to pull stuff apart anymore because uh crapping on stuff gets you more clicks and views than enjoying things.
And then finally, we did do a uh poll on our YouTube channel, and it's a split, Don.
Uh 50/50 down the down the thing for uh I loved it and uh I didn't care for it.
So audience, some audiences are split on this and I want to get into all that, too. But before we get into details and any spoilers, Don, tell me non-spoiler, what did you think of The Mandalorian Groku?
I I mean, spoiler alert, I thought this was great. And you guys knew that already, or at least you could assume it's a Star Wars movie. I love watching Star Wars on the big screen. I mean, that's not this is not just a cliche.
And it's actually um it's an experience because of how good uh Lucas Film is with all their visual effects and and artistry. Um so I just love the big screen aspect of it. Um listen this so you said that the fact that this was the first Star Wars movie in the theaters in seven years was an important factor and I'm I'm going to challenge you on that.
Um, you know, I mean, I get the sentiment, but at the same time, this movie should not have to carry any additional burden because of that. And I'm starting to feel that that is where a bad rap is getting laid upon this movie because this is not a saga. This is not a piece of a saga. This is a fast uh contained story that yes, I was hoping for it to have a little bit more implications for the go forward, but it doesn't. It really focuses on a very small story that just so happens to involve the Mandalorian and Grou. And I loved it. I absolutely loved what it did. It was wildly entertaining. I took my children. They loved it. They were getting scared at the monsters and everything and rooting for the Mandalorian Grou. And I'm not sure about your theatergoing experience day, but people actually clapped in my auditorium, which uh was pretty cool. Uh because I'm not one of those guys, but hey, I like good. I can note that they clapped. Um so yeah, there you go.
Non-spoiler. And I don't even feel like we need to get into all the greedy details. I just I want to talk about all the headlines I'm seeing about this thing is completely unjustified.
Um but there's some cool stuff in here.
Some really cool fan service. Um but Dave Fona does need to back off with the cameos. Like we get it.
We get it. like one shot in one movie here or there, but he did have like three shots I feel in this movie and I'm just like, whoa, stop.

>> He was an X-wing pilot, so >> Oh, sorry. Spoiler. Um, >> all right. And >> what did you think, Dave?
>> I've been thinking about it since I got home and I'm I'm I'm really torn, right?
because I love I love the Mandalorian TV show. I love the character of uh um Jyn. Uh wait, I Why is my name Why is my mind blanking? Jin Erso, right? That's his name. No.

>> The Mandalorian. What's his actual name?
>> Oh, Dingjarun.
>> Dingjarun. Why am I saying Jin Erso?
Yeah, Dingjarun, which I found it interesting that that wasn't said at all in this this uh movie. Oh, sorry. Uh too much information. I love the characters.
I loved I love the idea of the movie.
Um but I was a little disappointed because I don't think it was well executed and and and I'll get into that in spoilers. like there are aspects of it that just kind of was like eh for me, you know, a little little disappointing.
And it kind of confirms in my mind rumors that I've heard about the movie uh about Lucasfilm and Disney and and the future of of the franchise in general. It kind of solidified it in my mind like, oh, I think they're right. I think this this is what's going on. So >> like It's a fun movie if you want to like waste a couple hours on a and go to the theater and enjoy a good action movie.
Yes. Like there's a lot of fun action.
There's a lot of fun scenes in this movie. Um if you don't take it too seriously, like yeah, you you'll you'll enjoy it. Um there's a there's laughs, you know, in it as well. But uh but yeah, like you know, that's that's kind of how I'm feeling about it. Uh so you loved it.
I'm kind of like, eh. So that's that's our non-spoiler take. If uh if you haven't seen it yet, if you don't want spoilers, this is your opportunity to walk away to uh that's the way or this is the way.

>> Yes. And if you >> if you don't care about spoilers, here we go. Um let's see. Hold on. Let what real quick. We got uh some people here commenting. Uh there's surprisingly a large crowd in mine as well. Uh as well as a huge round of applause at the end, which was nice.
Uh Thrawon says there was 30% fuller for my showing at 9:00 p.m. Thursday.
>> Well, but Thrawon, you are a West Coaster, which means the weather is probably a whole lot better where you live.

Uh Travis there also enjoyed it. Uh Roto was the best character for me and the highlight of the movie was Grou's story line in the second act. Yeah, I want to talk about that. Uh hey Frosty, what's up? And uh we need a Fast and Furious movie with baby >> Babu Freaks.
>> Baboo Freaks. Okay, I love >> the Babu Freaks. So, the little guys.
Um, so let's get into this. Spoiler time.
Um, so, oh, I want to say this, too. I came to a realization, Don. I think this is a very important realization. I think I know why Mando is such a popular character.
>> Okay, do tell. He's Star Wars Batman.
>> Okay, I'm with you. I'm buying what you're selling.
>> He he he has this mythos that people are afraid when he shows up.
>> Um and he does go in and take out like whole squads of people and >> it's kind of scary, you know. Um he's got a a young sidekick, >> Robin.
>> Y >> um Groku his Robin. Uh except this this Robin has magic powers. Um, >> and this Batman is encased in uh in vulnerable armor.
>> Yes, in best car. Um, well, Batman's armor except his face is exposed, which was always, >> right? If you shot him in the face, he's dead.
>> That's his weak, >> but no one does.
>> No one does.
>> No one figures that out.
>> Shoot him in the face.
>> In the face. They go to shoot from the chest. Um, and >> it's actually a dumber.
>> So, yeah, we're not going to go we we'll go we'll go uh section by section. We won't get into too many details, but it starts off >> Yeah.
>> he's breaking into an Imperial stronghold. Uh, for those who don't know, obviously spoilers, but the this takes place after Return of the Jedi. So many years after Jedi, the uh the New Republic is rebuilding and they're going after remnants of the Empire. So, and they hired Dingjarun as a um >> bounty hunter.
>> Bounty hunter. Yeah. To go after the leaders of these uh sects of the empire.
And so it starts off there's a one of these governors from the empire and he's like uh meeting with these towns people and saying like you've got to pay me protection money. There's all these stormtroopers blah blah blah blah.
And then badass Mando shows up, basically wipes out all the Stormtroopers.
Uh there's a the we've all seen in the the trailers, the big chase with the Adats and he's dro that little walker addat. Yeah. Ensues and >> um long story short, >> very cool.
>> Yeah. Long story short, he does not bring the bounty in because he kills the bounty.
Well, right. But a very cool scene because we've never seen inside of an AT before, >> right?
>> They also didn't name the planet, which has led to online speculation that it could actually be Hoth.
>> Uh but anyway, to show the inside of an AT must it might seem stupid to some, but honestly for me, I was like, "Oh, wow. Cool." um you know, >> and then when and then he used but I thought it was really cool seeing because they were going to the last AT-AT they're going to they're going to blow it up but the main um Imperial uh warlord he's getting away so the Mando has to use the guns on the AT-AT.
Uh he does shoot down the ship and they're able to escape just in time while it blows up. So, it was total fun scene, but again, just seeing the inside of the AT-AT and him fight through that uh was cool. I love it.
>> I I was gonna say one of the cool aspects of a movie like this is that it expands on things uh from the original trilogy.
Like you we never saw the inside of an adat before. Um well, we the inside of the the cockpit, but not the hole where the troops sit. So yeah, seeing that was cool. Um, and uh, and yeah, the whole like he had all those bombs set to like blow it up, but yet he's trying to use the guns to shoot the guy who's getting away. And Gro is like sitting tapping on his helmet, you know, >> and then as the and the BB's getting faster, >> like that's he's like, I got it. I'm trying to shoot this guy. Stop. So, so yeah, that was fun. Um, he flies out last second with the jetpack. The adapp blows up. He shoots the guy down. Um, then he goes to the planet where uh the the rebel, not rebel base, the uh New Republic bases.
>> New Republic.
>> Yeah. Um, and his >> some like sandy beachy >> place, man. and they seem to be chilling.
>> Another thing like they don't say the name of that planet either.
>> They may have on the Mandalorian show.
>> This this movie really does differentiate itself because again it doesn't start with a crawl, you know. It does start with some opening text, you know, but we did we don't get the special open up with John's Williams Star Wars, you know, we just we it it we get a very Mando opening. Um but Travis here agreeing with you Dave uh saying Mando's parents were also killed in front of him. That is correct.
>> Um and that's the other interesting thing like because this is I can't remember if they did this in uh the Han Solo movie um or I don't think Rogue One does this where it's >> you know it's that cold open thing right where >> Yeah. goes through that whole thing and then the Mandalorian comes up on screen and the Mandalorian theme from the shows >> and then they're coming into the planet.
uh you see the X-wings flying and and and stuff and that that's the credits are rolling as uh we're we're coming in and he goes and sees Sigourney Weaver who is his new handler um uh to to gives him his bounties to go after. Um which >> did they deage her?
>> I feel like they did or a lot of makeup.
>> Yeah. Like >> I was just wondering.
>> I mean, she's getting up there too, you know. Um, still a, you know, I'm sure she's, you know, she's still attractive for her age, but yeah, like they definitely did something.
>> I bet you if Magic does a Aliens, uh, Universes beyond that she wouldn't be mean enough to call artwork of Ripley AI.
>> Probably not. Um, And you know, she like this scene is cool too because like she's they have a deck of cards basically that they use.
>> Right. They're doing the whole desert storm thing I feel or whatever. Iraqi freedom.
>> Right. Right.
>> Did that.
>> He gives her the card for the guy says, "Oh, you know, it got messy and and and he blew him up." And then she's like um says, "Oh, well, here's your payment." And she takes him outside and it's a new Razor Crest, right? Because that was one of the things we talked about from the trailer. They showed the Razer Crest, but we all know was destroyed in season one.
>> Or is it season two? Okay. Um on the >> No, end of season two.
>> End of season two. Yeah, >> I think. So, um, and then he had the the Starf Fighter, um, that was retrofitted, uh, for a little thing for Grou, >> the M1. Yeah.
>> Yeah. Yeah. The M1. So, like, you know, you know, it's it's a uh it's a carrot, you know, like I'm going to send you, you know, that's a setup, right? You know, it's like, I'm going to send here's a here's a thing that you love, right? Your ship was destroyed. We know that you've been wanting to replace it.
You can't afford it. Um, you know, as soon as they're doing that, it's like, oh, they're going to ask him to do something really dangerous, you know, like you feel it coming, you know?
>> Sure.
>> And so, that's what we're here for.
>> She goes, "This is our ace.
Um he's believed to be dead, but they don't think he's dead. And the only people that have information for him are the Huts, are the twins who are now running the Hut uh Empire uh crime empire. And so you've got to go and talk to them and they're going to send you on a mission so that they you can get the information, you know. Um, and of course this is also Oh, wait, no.
He he was on the planet and helped him leave, but uh Zeb is in the movie. For those who don't know who Zeb is, >> which I love, >> he's a character from Rebels and I believe was it I can't remember if he was in Ahsoka or or um Mandalorian.
>> Well, he's already been in Mandalorian.
Yeah, he was >> Mandalorian. Okay. Yeah. So, so it was like, "Oh, okay, cool." So, they're going to, you know, he's he walks onto the ship. Zeb's like setting things up and whatnot, and he's like, "I didn't say yes." And he and Zeb looks at him and goes, "You didn't say no either."
>> Right. And of course, this I loved this sequence in the sense of he gets in the the pilot's seat, he takes off and he flies to the what's the name of the huts planet?
>> Nho.
>> Nho.
>> Be there's no there's no dialogue uh with him saying I'll take the mission or whatever. Like it just he just goes and does it, you know?
And I I appreciate not wasting exposition on all of that.
>> You know, >> right?
>> It it kept the movie going, you know.
>> Um but oh, I didn't say this, and this is one of the criticisms backing up a little bit like after the cold open and then the Mandalorian and the credits rolling while they're showing stuff. That's not something that they've and the music's playing. I don't feel like that's something they've done in a Star Wars movie before, you know. It was always the opening crawl and then we just get right into it, you know.
>> Um, that's one of the things that in my mind makes me feel like I'm watching a TV show. I'm not watching a movie.
>> Well, yes, but they have done this before actually, just in reverse order.
And it's funny because both of these series have Grow to the Hut in them and were both of the movies. So the Clone Wars uh animated series for Cartoon Network before that aired, they had the Clone Wars movies in theaters where of course uh Anakin and Ahsoka were charged with saving Road of the Hut from uh Darth Tyrannis or Count Doku. Um, and then they went into the Clone Wars show and both the movie and the show, they all had the same feeling. And so this is very much that in reverse. Now we've had the show.
>> Yeah.
>> But now we've got an ending in the movie that has the same exact feel, same exact score, same thing. But again, oddly enough, Roa is in both movies, the first Clone Wars and now the Mandalorian movie. Interesting. But there is a precedence here. Yes. Um, so yeah, that's the thing. He he he goes in, the huts are expecting him. You you see that that their place is protected by droids. And like that was also one of the things that got me. It's the it's like a lot of them are the battle droids from >> Yeah.
>> prequels, but like they're they're painted up different and they've got like stuff on them.
>> Some got Yeah. some like hats, capes.
Yeah.
>> Yeah. It was just like it was weird, you know. Again, here's the thing.
>> It wasn't I I gota I'm sorry. I got to forgive myself because you're not a Star War like me and I create, you know, my tabletop stuff like all of this [ __ ] That's what it reminds me of a fringe element of a Star Wars tabletop RPG.
This is it. You know, I was d what I loved actually about this scene, Dave, is like seeing how the huts because before this we pretty you pretty much know even in the video games and [ __ ] the huts are always in some uh palace on a throne sitting there. But as they're walking through this palace, which is like it's a palace, but it's like ingrained in this big tree. It's all jungle and [ __ ] around them. Um, but you see these [ __ ] huts like slugging their way, you know, through the corridors and [ __ ] Like that was all very interesting. We've just never seen that before where huts are just like rolling and slithering around and [ __ ] and um I don't know. It was cool. The battle droids though, like no, that totally makes sense. You know, you would but again that's just me who's familiar with a lot of different scenarios that would call for droid. I use a lot of droid servants in my game, so I totally get it.
>> Again, I don't know about I always I always took from >> the prequels the reason they switched to clones is because the droids weren't reliable uh defense or or soldiers and yet here are the huts using them, you know? I mean, heck, in the Phantom Menace, they destroy the controller ship and all the droids just fall over, you know?
>> Right. But then that flaw didn't exist after that.
>> They changed that. They learned from that. Doesn't happen in the Clone Wars anymore.
>> Yeah, I guess. Um, so so the Huts the they're like the twins are like, "Oh." Uh, and the last time we saw the twins was in Boba Fett, I believe.
Uh, and um, so which also like that's one of those weird things that like got me and again this goes back to um, you know, the some of the lore I the some of the expanded lore I'm not familiar with. Um, I thought they lived on Tatooine as well.
You know, the twins anyway. Like I I thought that's where the heart of the Hut um crime syndicate was, right?
Because Jabba was on Tatooine and then the twins showed up on Tatooine and Boba Fett, you know, Boba Boba Fett was on the >> on his throne.
>> Uh that Bid Fortuna had taken over and then >> Boba Fett took it over in the in the the show. So it's like so then to see them on the Hut home world sitting on the throne I'm like oh okay I'm like yeah and I guess that makes sense but yet my mind was always like oh he's going to Tatooine.
Ah um >> I could see that because yeah now Huta uh is in hut space like hut hut cartel controlled space but yeah Tatooine actually is not um you know I think that's a little bit of a development after the fact you know they the original Star Wars the whole trilogy kind of thrown together um you know it you know love George Lucas but he did not he was not like Tolken where Tolken had [ __ ] languages and eons of timelines figured out before his books were published.
>> Star Wars is thrown together a little bit. Um, and I think that's a little bit part of that where yeah, Jabba was on Tatooine, but really he, you know, if he's in control of the whole Hut cartel, he should have been on Naluta.
So, I could see where >> right.
So they they basically they say, "We'll give you the information, but you got to go save our nephew uh Road to the Hut." Um the last time we saw him, this is the this is the most recent picture we have of him, and it's a little it's a baby hut.
>> Yeah. From the Clone Wars movie where they saved him as a baby.
>> That's the last time we saw him was in the Clone Wars as a baby. Um but he's had a growth spurt since then.
Well, yeah, it's been what, you know, almost 50 years. So, um, >> but that set but that that set up red flag right there. Yeah. Go, uh, go get our precious nephew. Oh, and the only picture we have he was from he was a baby.
>> Yeah, exactly. And uh and go save him.
He's he's captured on this planet. Um and which was true >> to a certain by a certain point of view.
>> Mhm.
>> Um so so Djarun goes to the planet. He finds out that uh um he finds out from this vendor. I don't remember the character's name, but uh >> say it. It's uh Martin Scorsesei is the voice of the >> of of the guy. Right away I'm like, "Oh my god, that's Martin Scorsese's voice."
>> Um he, you know, he's like he oh, everyone knows Rada. He's he's the fighter in the in the arena. So they go and watch him fight and and like Yeah, he's as a hut that's muscular is just weird to me.
>> Yeah, Roa is jacked.
>> Yes. um as much as a slug can be jacked and he he obliterates his opponent blah blah blah. Uh after the match, Djar gets to goes back uh backstage basically as it were and he's being massaged and um Djarn goes and Mando goes and it's like um I'm here to rescue you.
And what's Ro is like what what what does he say?
>> He doesn't want to be rescued. Yeah.
>> Yeah. He doesn't want to be rescued.
He's uh apparently does have a debt and is in captivity, but one more fight and he's free. So, and he also likes the fact, you know, that he's got these fans because, you know, he's got daddy issues. um you know he doesn't like Jabba so he's kind of the opposite and uh really doesn't you know but it's hard living under Jabba's shadow and uh but he's liking the situation and just kind of wants Dingjarun to go away although he takes an instant liking to Grou he was feeding him these blue >> bugs or whatever they were so and they they quickly establish >> that road to the hut um as much of a like monster as he is is actually supremely chill.
>> I think there's a there's an interesting choice they make with uh Road of the Hut >> that establishes him even more as a good guy. He speaks common or English.
>> Yes.
>> Whereas the other huts don't. They still speak that you know the hut language. So the fact that like nothing has to be translated for him, you know straight out what he's saying. It's like, oh, they are trying to establish that he's a good guy. Like that's that struck me right away in the scene. So, yeah. Um, so yeah, so we find out he's under contract. Um, this is a scene where I was just like I I don't get what he's doing cuz cuz Roa says I've got one last fight and if I win my last fight then I'm I'm uh I'm a free man, you know, and I can go my own life.
>> He's like I don't want to go back to the huts. I don't want to be a crime lord.
I'm nothing like my father. Um all this stuff, you know, and it's like okay. So, in my mind, it's like, okay, wait for him to finish his last fight and then, you know, then then you can either capture him or or have a conversation with him or figure it out. But no, he goes to the crime boss, we'll put that in quotes, um that is running this town, who runs the fights, you know, and all that, who he has the contract with. Um, there's a crazy bar fight scene.
Uh, you know, >> Oh, that was great.
>> He knocked that guy's horn off. Okay, >> I'm not saying it wasn't like that's another scene where I was like, "Yeah, this is Star Wars Batman." like that whole scene was like it it was a a a brawl fight and it was just like yeah like um and it's a cool scene because I show I think it showed that like he's he can think on his feet and he didn't depend as much on his weapons in that fight. It was a lot of it was a fight fight, you know. Um but obviously it impresses the boss. He comes out uh comes and uh talks to Mando and this is another weird thing like he says like I want to buy out his contract and the guy's like oh no I'm not selling him I'm not I'm not going to sell you his contract and he reveals his plan to him.
He's like I'm planning to kill him you know. Um, well, it's that it's that weird thing is like >> you're a corrupt person, so you assume everyone else is as corrupt as you, right?
>> Well, that but I it see what tied that together for me though is the fact that he says, "But hey, you know, I'm doing you a favor here. Take this money. Bet it on this guy dying because that's what's going to happen." because he's not because the Mandalorian's uh reputations precedes him. So, he's trying to give him respect um while not, you know, because obviously he's going to make a lot of money off this too. He's like he said, he built him up to where nobody's going to bet for him to lose and so he's also >> going to make a lot of money from this.
>> So, yeah. Um, it's a bit of a plot contrivance because you think like then Mando would be able to go back and be like, "Hey, listen."
>> Um, but that's not what he does. He enters into >> and that's the whole thing. The whole point of the scene is to reveal that they're planning to kill Rod of the Hut.
Like, it's not that's that's it. It's just so he could talk the talk to the guy so that he can find out like, "Oh, well, I'm planning to kill him, you know, and yeah, so it's it's a contrived scene just to for that plot point when there's been could have been a hundred different ways to get that information.
So obviously Mando now is trying to break him out because it's like, well, they're going to kill you." But he does again he doesn't want to be saved. So he calls out to the guards.
Mando gets captured and you get the scene that we had in the trailer where they're fighting in the arena, you know.
Um which is a good scene because it shows not only is Mando a good guy, he's a smart guy. like he basically wins the fight without hurting him and says while he's got a knife to his throat he goes I yield Roto wins so now he's out of the contract >> you now he's free you know >> so like again I don't want to go beat by beat because it is a cool fight but then it's of course the the crime boss is like oh yes he's free to die and he releases he releases all the creatures that were there to try to that rot had to fight originally to kill him.
>> Um, >> and it's a cool scene.
>> Dev Rip in the trailer go through.
>> I will say is I think they faked us out and I I do appreciate there's two things about the scene I want to point out.
>> One, they faked us out. the little guy, the little creature with the electric lightning powers. But as he's coming out of the tunnel and you see the shadow on the wall, did you not think that was going to be a rancor?
>> I did actually. I did. I thought they were definitely getting rancored. Yeah.
>> Yeah. Cuz it was the same shadow as a rancor and like you're thinking this big thing's coming out the door and it's this little guy, but he's electrified.
um who who later on becomes a big problem in the fight. But the other thing I noticed at this point is did you notice the arena and what it looked like?
>> No, I mean >> it was the chess board from the Millennium Falcon.
>> Oh, you know I did. I did because they had the exact uh where they had the exact move, too. You're right. I did notice that. Um >> yeah, it was >> picked up the guy and and and slammed him. Yeah. Yeah, like it was a lot of and a couple of the same creatures from the game. It was just like, >> "Ah, I see I see what you did there, Fona. I see what you did. There's your Easter egg for the original movie."
Like, that was good. I I I appreciated that, you know. Um, and of course, there's a whole big crazy fight that goes on. Um, Austin.
>> Hey, Austin. What's up?
>> Austin Hamlin, did you see my cameo?
Look at that.
H, okay, Austin. Um, we Okay, hold on. Let me Let's let me finish my point here. But of course, the little guy, the the electric guy, causes the most chaos because he goes into the laser grid that's supposed to keep them in the grid, into the in the fight arena, and shorts it out, >> and thus all the creatures escape into the audience. It's like, oh crap, they're going. You know, I derailed my bed. No, it's okay because I have a question before before we continue this part. Am I crazy? Or was there a cameo in this movie in the background?
>> I didn't notice one, but I'm >> Was R2D2 in the background at the new New Republic base?
>> Yeah, I didn't notice it, but maybe I >> I could have swore there was >> another R unit in general.
>> Two quick shots, but it's silver.
>> He was white, silver, and blue. You're not going to have an R2 that's that's got a silver dome and and blue. And again, it was in the distance if it's not going to be R2 cuz there was also an R5 that clearly you see at one point, >> but I could have swore um R2 was in the background. If anyone if any of you watching saw it too, please let me know.
Or am I crazy? Um but but what did you think when it when the the the fence got shorted out? Cuz I'll tell you, like my brain went, "Oh crap, here we go."
>> Honestly, what I thought was, "Mando, go get your shit." Um, that was my immediate thought. But other than that, yeah, I thought it was cool. It's like, okay, this is why the Sav Rip is we saw in the trailer is going through the town. And um, yeah, know, I thought it was uh I thought it was really cool. I thought the whole scene was cool. I loved seeing all those different types of Star Wars monsters. So, they're very scary. Um, but just it was fun.
>> Yeah, it was it was fun. It's a big wild chase that spills out into the city streets. Um, and like they're still trying to save um uh I can't think of his name. Hut.
Rada. They're still trying to save Rada.
>> And he's like, "Oh, I'll find I'll find a car, you know, I'll find a transport."
and he and and they're fighting all the creatures out on the street and then Rada gets into a speeder and he's like, "I'm sorry. I got to go."
And he takes off and now they're chasing him, you know? I was like, "Okay, cool."
That was a fun like you don't get uh you don't get street chases like that in Star Wars, you know? So, like, >> right.
>> I thought that was a cool little little fun thing as well. Um, of course they capture him, uh, and they're taking him back to the the the huts because he's like, and he's and and the whole time he's basically begging him. And this is where he finally explains why he doesn't want to go back, which is another thing that kind of bothered me about it, you know, like if he had just told him straight up, um, maybe there could have been, uh, what you call it, uh, negotiations.
But >> right, but Dave, he didn't but up until they had had that conversation where like, you know, he's tied up on the ship. He's talking to Mando and Mando reveals like, "Hey, I don't work for the twins. I work for the New Republic who need information from the Twins, so that's why I got to do this." And then that's when Roert said, "Hey, no, then here, guess what? Here's the information." Now, um they just didn't get to have that conversation. Or they didn't I guess they could have actually, but they didn't have that conversation.
>> Yeah. Um because because because it would have gone that way if he showed up and he said, "Look, I don't want to go back because uh my aunt and uncle want to kill me, you know, so I don't want to go go back there because I'm the heir to the to the hut throne and and I but I don't want the throne." And which also I think is weird. It's like if he says he doesn't want it, like why is he a threat to them if he doesn't if he's not going to take over? But >> yeah, >> I digress on that.
uh uh not well thoughtout plot point.
But if he had said that from the beginning, then Manda would have said, "Well, look, I don't work for them. I work for uh uh the New Republic and we need the information, you know, and then then he would have just revealed it right then and there." But I digress on that. Um, so yeah. So the the the crime lord guy who was running the the the syndic the fight the fighting arena is also the empire guy that they're looking for. How convenient.
They don't have to travel far, >> right?
Um, so, so long story short, yada yada yada, they go back, they find his his base, there are a bunch of stormtroopers there. It proves that Rod is telling the truth, basically. They capture the guy, they bring him back to uh I keep want to say the rebel base, the the uh um Republic base.
>> Yeah. And and here's the thing. It's like, you know, Nelson Sigourney Weaver's character is giving him a hard time, right? Not because he did a good job, but because they were also trying to foster a relationship with the Huts, you know, because they run the the crime syndicate. And obviously they're like, well, this is just going to ruin things, you know. Well, that's because she doesn't know um what she will come to know at the end of the movie. But to me, her biggest because I even think she did say good job. Um maybe not at this point in the movie.
>> Yeah.
>> But, you know, she did have a legit warning which is you did just screw over, you know, the heads of the hut cartel, the twins. They're known to be [ __ ] In fact, look at what they're trying to do to you know. So, I I understood her point there. I guess it didn't take me out of it.
So now here's what I want to say. Here is my my main issue with the movie. And this is from this point is where it started feeling this way.
And it also solidifies rumors that we heard about this. Right. So, when the movie was coming out, if you'd remember this, uh there were rumors that there weren't going to be any more Mandalorian TV shows.
Uh that they had worked on a season 4, but now they're not. They scrapped season 4 and a lot of the ideas are in this movie, right? You remember that?
>> Yep.
>> Yeah. So, that's the thing watching it.
I'm I'm I'm feel like the pa this is where the pacing is screwed up for me because it's like now we're at a an ending point, right? Like they could have ended the story right then and there like they got the guy they wanted.
Mandalorian Mando is victorious.
Um blah blah blah. And in fact, he he's helped Frada out with a gununner, is going to take him off planet and hide him. And uh all is well is good in the world, and he's just going to, you know, be a a rancher for a little bit on his uh working on his on his razor crest, you know, and and roll credits, right?
Because this is where I started feeling like, oh, this is written more like an episodic TV show than it is a straight movie, you know, like there's there's a weird pacing here. We're having a slowdown in the story where you would have a mid-season kind of like break, you know, because then you find out later like, oh, there was an issue and and and whatever. and then the story continues. I kind of felt like, oh no, that this is like it's not a straight through. It's like this happened and then this happened and then this happened, but you could have ended this the story at like three different points, you know, because it felt like episodes you're now watching, not one continuous two-hour story.
Okay. I mean, I think you let your knowledge kind of maybe put that I I just didn't feel that way. I didn't feel that at no point, you know, but I mean, you're right. I did hear that, but I just I don't know. It's nothing I nothing I noticed. I guess nothing that I have a problem with there. I'm not saying it's I'm not saying it's bad, but I kind of feel like here here's what I'm I'm I'm thinking at this point is that and it's one of the things that kind of like took me out of the movie a little bit is when they found out I feel like Disney pushed and it was like we don't we don't want to do Star Wars on TV as much. We want to get back into the theaters and we want to So you guys have the the biggest show on Disney Plus right now with Star Wars, which is The Mandalorian.
Everyone's loving Baby Grou. We want to cash in on that. Go make a movie. And Dave Fona and and and crew and and Favro were like, "We've got a season 4 that we're writing that we're, you know, we're almost done with." And they went, "Great. Turn that into a movie." and instead of giving them the time to like scrap it and start fresh like using the same but like rework it so that it's a a movie. Um because I can't believe the Dave Fona I can't I don't know what other movies he's done. I know he's done a lot of great Star Wars TV but like John Favro could have come in and like really reworked it to be a great movie.
Like we all know John Favro's an amazing uh writer and director, right? So I feel like that may be an issue here is that they might not have been given enough time to convert the show into a movie.
So just just my opinion and again because I feel like the pacing gets weird uh especially from this point forward in the movie, you know. So >> okay. Um, so Roto leaves. He's working on the Razor Crest at night. It's raining. The the what are those guys called? The little guys that you love.
Um, >> the I just call them Babu Freaks.
>> The Baboo Freaks. They came to help.
They're all sleeping with Grouku in the house. Um, and uh, uh, what's the name of that? The the the bounty hunter shows up. Um, >> I don't know the name of that bounty hunter.
>> Oh, I thought they used him before in in one of >> I have. I still don't know his name.
>> He is He was in like Rebels, right?
>> Mhm.
>> I think. Yeah. Okay. Um, so the bounty hunter shows up. Um, he quick.
Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh.

>> Embo. Yeah. So, there's >> his dog is a vor which is actually a force sensitive thing.

>> Uh, of course it's paced like that. It was most likely not written for a movie.
Oh, and then he's saying he agrees.

>> Yeah. I mean that with that I mean I I I I don't agree but that may just be I may not have much of a nuance taste about it. I I just didn't get I I I never thought the pacing was anything but great to be honest. But this is a >> so >> uh very you know fast-paced. So, the the the the bounty hunter captures Mando and the wolf takes one of the little mechanic guys and they go fly off and leaving Baby Yoda, I'm sorry, Goku and the other little guys like looking up like, "Oh my god, what are we going to do?" You know?
Um, and that sets off a whole now Baby Yoda side quest. But before we get to the Baby Yoda side quest, um, obviously the the bounty hunter was sent by the huts. They captured him. They they bring him to the the palace and, um, you know, you see that they had recaptured Roto already. He was in a torture chamber or torture chair thing and uh and they do the one thing that you aren't supposed to do to a Mandalorian which is >> remove his helmet.
>> Yes. Which I was like we did this already. He voluntarily removed it before, you know, and like he got out of it. So I'm just like uh I guess you got to do it for the people who didn't watch the show.
You got to have that moment, you know. I mean, if they didn't do this, Pedro Pascal could have just phoned in the whole performance.

>> Um, so yeah, they remove the helmet and of course that means he's dishonored because his face was revealed to an enemy. Um, which gets him shunned from Mandalorian society. And uh you know they also make comment about they get him angry by saying oh we'll we'll go after your little friend meaning Grou which makes him jump forward onto Don.
>> What does he jump onto?
>> It's a it's a pit.
>> Yeah trap door just like Luke did.
>> Yeah it's your old >> old job of the hut. Uh the hole hut trap door in front of their throne trick.
>> In front of the throne trick. Yes. Yeah.
Um shocked so many people fall for that. Um but this time we don't fall.
>> Yes. Yes. That that was the joke. But this time we don't go into a rancor pit like we did in Return of the Jedi. We're in a like watery pit and we get I don't know what the name of these creatures are but like these >> Yeah. They're just like aquatic. They're almost like Yeah. I don't know. Just like kind of evil weird looking Gungan types. But yeah.
>> Yeah. Basically, um but I love the the setup of the area where he's at, right? He's in this pit and it's not just water. It's a bunch of like tree branches and stuff.
So yes, >> some places he can stand up, but then if he stands back or if he takes two steps back, he's in deep water. Very, very cool. I'm actually going to use that in my game here. So it gave me a good idea.
Um, >> right.
>> And so, so like while he's fighting these guys, well, like the whole like after he you realize he was capturing with stuff, we got the um the cutest Robin suit up scene in movie history. You know, the Robin's going to go save the Batman. And of course, that's Grou putting on his armor getting ready to go into battle to save.
He puts little bombs in his pocket.
>> Mhm. and he's going to go save his daddy, um, Mando. And the little, uh, the little guys, they they have a ship and they all get in the ship and they go fly to the the hut home world to go, uh, save Mando. Um, and the the other uh the other little guy um escaped cuz when they took Mando to see the huts, the one that the wolf captured uh just left the ship and ran away. So when they land on the planet, they come they find him and he's like and I didn't like realize you could understand them sometimes. This is when I was started realizing like, oh, you do understand them. And they're like, >> it's like, ah, Mando and Palace, we go save him.
>> And they go, >> yeah, they go have their like little people adventure. I think it's like >> the the fun thing with that is that he's tiny, they're tiny, the ship's tiny, so everything ignores them. all the defenses.
>> Yes.
>> All everything like that would be meant to stop them doesn't stop them because they're all tiny. So like it it's not seen as a threat, you know.
Um which I thought was interesting.
Uh so they were like roaches to me. Uh they speak the drunk cab driver >> pretty much. Um >> good one. Thrawn kill.
>> So after he dispatched the three water creatures now back to Mando in the water pit dispatch those guys then all of a sudden we get the the they caught it something the dragon snake.
>> Yeah. Um, you know, which was like, you know, a white version of the Basilus from Harry Potter.
Okay.
>> Did you ever see Chamber of Secrets? You know, the B.
>> No. I [ __ ] Harry Potter. I hate Harry Potter.
>> Anyway, um, you got to be careful what you got to be careful what you say on on these live streams, you know. Uh, there's there could be a Harry Potter fan watching.

>> But it was funny because before the dragon attacked, they were like, "Oh, you won. You impressed us. Here's your reward." And he they throw his helmet down at him.
>> Throw his helmet, right?
>> Yeah.

Yeah. which I thought, and correct me if I'm wrong, I thought that was going to become a bigger thing in the fight, you know, like he was going to grab the helmet and maybe shove it in the jaw of the thing so it couldn't bite him or something. But it was just like, you know, they were fighting, he ends up near the helmet again and he puts it on and like that's it. It doesn't do anything to help him in the win the fight, you know?
Did you think that it was going to be more important or was just like ah you just thought it's gets him back to his helmet?
>> Yeah. No, I think it just gets him back to his helmet. It's less days you have to pay Pedro Pascal for.
So >> yeah, I feel like that was a big part of it. Um >> got to keep your eye on the budget.
So, um, basically he's fighting. He's having a hard time with the dragon. It does bite him. Uh, we get a little bit of exposition from the huts where it's like, ah, even if you do win now, the poison will kill you.
>> I was like, yes, >> there we go. Um, you know, and then and this is going to get to the pacing again with the movie. Um, at this point, Grou shows up. He puts a bomb on the vent. It blows up, allows them to escape out the out out this tunnel. It's basically a drain. You know, they escape out through this drain. Um, now they're running through the forest. They're being ch like now the huts are like, "Send send all those water creatures. Send all the ro uh all the droids. Go get them. You know, don't let them escape." And uh they're running, they're being chased, blah blah blah. And he's like he's saying to Groku, "Ah, where's the ship you you came here on?" And he's like, "Ah." Then Gro's like pointing like over here, over here. And they get to the ship. It's like, "Oh crap, it's a tiny ship."
>> Yeah. He's he's not getting out of here.
>> I'm not getting out of here. So he tells them to go on. He's going to he's >> including Grou. He wants Grou to go.
>> Be safe, Grou. Blah blah blah. He's fighting off. And again, now here's where I'm talking about the pacing again. They go through this whole um fight. He's like fighting off all these droids to stop them from from stopping for them from getting away. He sees the ship get away. Um, and he he collapses, you know, cuz the poison has gotten to him and he and he's like he collapses. And it's one of these things where like if you're watching a TV show that's at the a cliffhanger end of an episode, >> it's like, oh my god, did they just kill off uh Mando? Like is this the end? You know, but in a movie, you know, they didn't kill him off with a with an hour left into the movie or 45 minutes, whatever it was at that point.
Like, you know, kill him off. You know that Grou is going to come back and save him. Um and and again, so if just that's where like again the pacing now slows down again and and we basically get a what would have been an episode of a show of the solo Grou adventure while he's trying to nurse Mando back to health and him running around and doing stuff. You know, that's what this really felt like. Like this section here of the movie was meant to be a solo episode of episode of season 4 of The Mandalorian, you know, The Adventures of Grou.
Okay.
I mean, I just it doesn't have a I I I don't know, man. I mean, I agree that at this point the pacing does slow down, but I feel there's a purpose for it. Um, as far as this whole like um, you know, Grou heals up the wound, but he doesn't cure the poison. So, he builds a little hut uh, to hide Mando in. And it was funny. Everyone was laughing as his helmet was clunking as he was trying to to fit him in there, but he can't. So, he covers his legs with some brush. Um, but here's where this is a little bit of a this is a plot contrivance that I really kind of didn't understand where he met that like big salamander uh that was his cabin, you know, out in the woods like, you know, oh, and he stole his fish and brought it back and ate it.
>> And then he went back the next day and the guy catches him per, you know, and it's like >> and he ends up um giving him another fish. He's friendly. He's friendly. Uh the bounty hunter comes by. He holds he he he has Grou hide. This is where the Vornsker is like almost goes after him because he can sense him, but I get away from my fish. Um and then the bounty hunter leaves and he tells Grou, "Oh, that's what the bounty hunter's doing.
Oh, here's some here's some antidote.
Here's some mucky stuff to put in the Mandalorian's mouth to cure him." And that all goes down. But it's like why would why would he help him? I guess it just that is, you know, it's not married.
>> But >> no, no, but it's also again plot contrivance too because >> like yeah, >> the the bounty hunter happened to show up while Grou was there, tell him what was going on and so that and he happened to know how to make the antidote for that the poison of that the the dragon thing. It's just like, yeah, it's all just so that we could move the plot along here, you know. Um, and again, I also kind of feel like some of the plot contrivments things were because um those story beats were longer because they were meant to be a full episode of a show. So now they had to like, okay, well, how do we resolve this quicker so we can get him to to help Mando and they can, you know, move on to the next part of the story, you know? So it was like, oh, the Manny Hunter showed up and uh and he tells him that Mando that he's looking for Mando, but he's probably poisoned. And you know, um I do I will say too, one of the the cool things they show um is when Grou closes the wound and heals it, you know, like he doesn't cure the poison, but he can close the like it just goes back to, you know, they should like because I feel like it should have always been a Power of the Jedi, you know, and they showed it we first really saw it with um on on TV on on the big screen with uh Rey in was it Rise of Skywalker where she heals that creature. Yeah. So, um showing the Jedi having healing powers like you know Yes. I've always thought that they probably do have that, but they never like we always saw the Jedi being used as warriors and soldiers, you know, but it makes sense if they're supposed to be like monks that they would have healing power. Um, so yeah, he >> But it is it's not very prevalent. It really isn't like healing in Star Wars is mainly due to Bacta and Colto back.
>> But we didn't have a back tank. We only had >> We just had uh we just had black goop.
>> Grow goop.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> So, um uh and then like basically now um they they find a ship. It's the the gun runner ship that was supposed to take uh Rato, however you say, uh away. Um, you see that the the the the robot gunner that was say was the droid.
He's destroyed. There's a fight on the ship. Blah blah blah blah. Um, so you get the without them saying, and again, this is another this is another good writing point is like you get the gist of what happened here without them explaining, you know, like >> Mhm. the they they found the ship and and shot it down or whatever. Like the the droid didn't betray Mando, right?
Because you see him destroyed. So, you know that it wasn't he didn't betray Mando and bring >> uh Rada here that he uh >> um you know, something happened to him and and that's how he got captured again. Um so, basically, they use the ship. Uh they they they they have this whole conversation. Do we fight or run? They decide to fight yada yada yada.
Um they save Rada. There's a big fight.
Okay.
I I want to talk about the final fight in this sense.

>> Was it a mistake to have three huts fighting each other? Was it hard to tell who was who at some points?
>> It wasn't for me. Roa is way more jacked than the others.
>> Yeah, >> that is also hardly the point in my eyes.

>> It was just cool to see three [ __ ] huts slashing around. You see that they're fighting on the the the trapoor before the throne >> which you know they're still alive probably now pissed off dragon snake.
So, they're a very heavy as you see.
They're very heavy. Three big giant space slugs. It was I don't know. I liked it. I enjoyed it. I >> I like the way it ended. I'm not saying I didn't I didn't I'm not saying I hated the fight, but I just kind of wish they had made a decision to color them each a little distinctly, you know, and make it a little more noticeable that who the three different people were in the fight. That's all.

Because it could just be me. It just could be me and my Michael Bay fandom where I didn't mind watching all the pointy gray robots tumble around >> the Transformers movies.
>> It goes back to like one of the um criticisms of a lot of Marvel movies.
Even the um what you call it? Uh people said this about Black Panther and the end fight and it's two CGI. Uh, it's Black Panther and um Killilmonger in the Black Panther suit fighting at the end. You know, one's silver, one's gold, you know, okay, fine. But yet at the same time, there isn't much that distinguishes them from each other in the fight. And it's a CGI mess that gets lost. And it's kind of like, yeah, the CGI's come a long way since that movie, but still, it's like it's a CGI blob mess of three huts, you know, fighting each other. Um, it it's a little hard to follow at times. Um, so >> yeah, I I guess there just really wasn't a whole lot they wanted you to follow. I I I think the only thing they wanted you to follow was, hey, there's big three [ __ ] large huts fighting on this uh not so stable trap door.
>> Yeah, I I I get I get what you're saying. Like that was the simple point of that scene, but um I expect more out of my Star Wars movies. Uh >> well that's a problem that we will talk about here in a moment as >> yeah so yada yada yada the the emp not the empire the uh new republic comes uh everyone gets saved huts are killed uh baby Yoda helps save the day and and yeah and um and everyone's everyone's happy you know um that that's when Sigourney Weaver said thank you you know good job was at the end of the movie. Um, >> but what a great scene. As I was alluding to before, the three big huts are on this trap door. It finally breaks. They even, "Oh, you got to kill us, Roda."
>> Yeah.
>> Go ahead.
>> No, no, no, no, no. Go ahead, go finish.
I'm sorry.
>> Um, they all three fall down, but Baby Yoda is able with the force to keep Roa up because they're best buds.
But just then to see two huts get eaten by that dragon snake uh was just wholly satisfying.
It was just awesome to see. Uh great scene.
>> Um >> great conclusion.
>> Here is also I wouldn't say this is this bothered me but it isn't where I was expecting the movie to go. Um what I was expecting to happen was the the twins were killed. So then Rada had to take the throne and because Rada is now, >> right? But and now that Rada is friends with um Mando and thus friends with the New Republic, uh like that would set up the relationship that Sigourney Weaver wanted to set up that they talked about at the halfway point in the movie, you know, that Mando screwed up by by rescuing Rada instead of taking him back to the huts. So like, so in my mind it's like, oh well that's the logical conclusion. That's the logical through line to end this movie, but it was like, no, the New Republic came in and said, screw it. I'm destroying we're destroying everything.
Now, >> right, they had every reason. It it is explained with a line at the end where it was like, >> "Yeah, the the the guy that you captured, he gave us all this information and here the huts were giving all their information about us >> to the empire. So they chose that that side and that."
>> So there was never anything they could actually cultivate that was >> Yeah. So >> So yeah.
>> So yeah. So I mean so yeah, that's that's basically the movie. Um, so like I said, my biggest criticism is the pacing issues because I feel like it was meant for it to to be a season of a TV show, not a movie. However, it has been getting criticism online. Um, by uh for a few different things.
Uh the first one I think is ridiculous and I'm going to I'm going to say this before uh you you bring up your point is that um that there's no Jedi in it. And it's like okay but not every Star Wars movie has had Jedi in it, right? Like Rogue One, no Jedi. Han Solo, no Jedi.
So like I don't understand.
Well, okay. I'm not completely countering your point, but Rogue One had Vader at the end and Solo had uh even though there was no action, Darth Maul at the end. However, with that said, yeah, we don't I listen, I too was kind of like, boy, okay, I would like to maybe see a Jedi, but that's not this story. Um that's not this story. So, >> and and and Grou uses the Force quite a few times in the in the >> Yeah. Yes, there's no lightsabers is what they're saying, >> right?
>> But that's um okay because this is a fringe crime syndicate bounty hunter gray story. It's not a Jedi Sith story.
>> So, what was what's the criticism that you've been seeing you think is unfair?
>> Well, here's the thing is I'm not seeing specific criticism. I'm only seeing headlines.

>> That are saying this is the worst Star Wars movie. This movie leaves Star Wars in a bad place. This movie, have you heard this one before, Dave? Ruins Star Wars.
>> I saw one that was like um the title was uh the Mandalorian Goku proves that it's time to move on to a new era in Star Wars. like to get out of that time frame and it's like no it doesn't like we saw a lot of cool stuff in in the show and in this movie that fans have always wanted to see >> and it's a movie that takes place in that time frame that doesn't revolve around the same uh five characters like that's what's good about it not Yeah.
>> Not that's not what's bad at all. Um so um people are >> listen the unfair thing is >> with all those headlines. Oh yeah. With all those headlines like all of these dumb stupid hatemongering nar dwelly I'm going to abuse this to get paid for writing words that don't matter writers out there. They're not even giving reasons for them these statements that they're making with their headlines >> because hate gets clicks.
>> Correct. Cuz hate gets clicked, but you're showing yourself to be absolutely stupid. Uh lacking any and all integrity and therefore a horrible journalist. I think what the problem is from what I'm seeing is everyone was expecting this movie because it's the first Star Wars movie in seven years to somehow establish or develop the universe in some major way. But this was just a bounty hunter story. This was Dingjar and Enrou working with the New Republic because the New Republic just so happens to have use for a bounty hunter who has a grudge against Imperial Warlords.
Okay, here's my counterpoint to that.
And and um I don't think you were on the show full-time when this news came out. I think JD was still uh oh, pardon me, was still on the show.
Maybe I'm maybe I'm wrong. If you correct me if you remember this, when they said um I think it's like when Ahsoka was coming out, they had said the plan was Mandalorian, Boba Fett, Ahsoka, they were bringing in all these characters from Rebels, you know, um and that they were going to then uh accumulate into a movie. And that's that was going to bring all the story lines together into a movie. Because think about it, we're still trying to figure out what happened with um Thrawn, Grand uh Tarkin. Yeah, Thrawn. Um I was about to say Grandma Tarkin. Grand Admiral Thrawn because like that storyline is still hanging out there. and the last we saw he came back to this part of the galaxy, you know.
>> So, I think people heard that news and were expecting that movie and we didn't get that movie. I'm not saying that movie is not going to be made. Um, and again, I go back to I feel like this was an edict from Disney where it was like we got to get back in theaters.
Mando Mando and and Grou are hot guys put this in don't no season four go make a movie you know and I feel like they shifted gears on them and that that's why we got this movie um instead of what people were expecting so okay when you have a plan what happens to that plan when you get punched in the [ __ ] face it goes out the window so you may be right that may have been the plan, but how long ago was that the plan? And just because the plan changed, I still don't see where you can point to that and say, "So that's why I didn't enjoy this movie."
>> Oh, I I I I'm not saying it's a reason not to.
>> And you're not saying that, but then why does that criticism need to be saying I think that's I think some people's expectation is that's what it was. Like people are [ __ ] If you had brought Ahsoka into this, then you would have had your Jedi. And then if you had an uh um >> Okay.
>> You know, Thron uh not Thrawron. Yeah, Thrawn. Admiral Thrawn. I was going to say Thron kill had Admiral Thrawn in it.
Like that's the the big grand um uh centerpiece movie. Like I think that's that's the problems. That's what people were expecting. And unfortunately, uh, that's not, like you said, the plans changed and this is this is what we got.
I I could be wrong. I just think that's that's why we ended up here and why people are >> You may be right or wrong, but that's unfair. That's got nothing to do with this movie. I mean, >> it's a like I think people should have just gone into this um like thinking this is a continuation of Mando and Grou story and like want to just have a good time, you know, cuz again, I don't criticize it. I don't criticize it because it's not a bigger movie. I don't criticize it because it's not >> there's no Jedi in it. I just criticized it. The pacing was off because I feel like they forced a story from a set of scripts that they had instead of having the time to like pull it apart and rebuild it, you know, uh from the ground up to a more coherent story with better pacing. That's it. Like other than that, it's a fun movie. So yeah.

>> Uh yes and yes. And I do think uh I would like >> I've been calling for Ree Revan forever.
>> I think I don't think we're going to like I don't think we would get a liveaction dark Revan, but if we get him in the cartoon, Reeves should voice him.
Definitely. I think Yeah, >> Gar Ree would do an excellent job.

>> Yeah. I don't think I think because they're going to keep him in the the mall shadow uh lord world. Um, and I think that's going to remain a cartoon.
We're not going to get a a live action because if if they did, let's be honest, let's be fair, you would want um what's his face to play Maul again? Um the original Maul from the movie, >> Ray Park.
>> Ray Park. And Ray Park's a little I think he's getting up there to go and and uh do all of the stunts and everything again. So, um I don't think we'll get a live action Darth Mullig again. So just that's just my feeling, but you know, have him come in and bring him into the cartoon.
Everyone would love it and and we love the show. So yeah, it'd be great. Oh my god. I'm going to say it again. The animation on that show is so good. It really is. As somebody who loves that stuff that that the animation on that is is topnotch. Uh James says, >> "There's nothing wrong with the force adjacent story without Jedi." Yes, there is nothing wrong with it. Uh, I think we are still getting a Ray movie if not a trilogy. I know Thron stop it.
So, the movie ruined Star Wars. Did it build more confidence in the IP? Cassan asking an actual good question. Um, I think what we should do is answer that and give our uh give our our scores and our final thoughts. Um, do you think it ruins Star Wars? Of course you don't. I know you don't. But do you think it like is going to build more confidence in the IP going forward?
>> No. No. And it shouldn't have to. That's not its job. Its job is to have people spend their uh 15 to $20 per ticket and say, "Hey, I had fun with that time."
And that's exactly what it did. It did not give us major developments in the Star Wars universe. That seems to, as you explained, uh, be an expectation of a certain part of the crowd and you shouldn't do that. I don't think it was ever sold as that. I think this was exactly what it was sold as. I mean, you're right. It was honestly it and I just don't care. It just didn't affect me. This is absolutely a season of TV that was made into a movie. But to me, all that did was say, "Hey, here's a bigger budget and you have to go a little bit faster." And I don't mind that. I like a fast pace because in a actionoriented uh visual, you know, visual piece, it's great. I don't need all the exposition when alls I want to do is just watch my Mandalorian and Grou go tear [ __ ] up.
>> All right. Um, yeah. I I agree that it shouldn't have to, but I'm also not dumb enough to say the Bean Counters at Disney aren't looking at this. And my thought is they're like, "Oh, we took a chance, brought Star Wars back into the theaters, uh, with who we feel is the most popular character at this time, and it's not performing. It's not performing like the other movies. It's not making a billion dollars because the marketing was terrible around this."
Like, yeah, there were trailers and stuff, but I don't feel like it was as strong as past Star Wars movies. And I also kind of feel like it was never like I love the character. It was a decent movie, but it was never going to be a$2 billion dollar movie, you know? Um, it's going to make money. I'm I'm hoping that word of mouth spreads and um they make, you know, they at least make twice the budget back and so they can cover the marketing costs, you know, and then that'll give them confidence to then greenlight a ne another Dave Filona uh Star Wars movie, which I would love to see Ahsoka and Thrawn and uh uh Ezra and all of those characters on the big screen together. That would be that would be perfect. So, all right.
What are your what is your score and your final thoughts? One out of 10 capes. My score is a nine out of 10 capes.
This isn't a huge saga building movie.
It's absolutely entertaining and fun, worth every uh penny of the price of admission.
you know, didn't have an end credit scene, so it's not even like trying to build into something. I was just pure fun visually. Uh, awesome.
Love seeing it on the big screen. If if that being the only reason alone, if it if it is no better than an actual TV show, at least it's something you could go see on the big screen. And that because that that's really is the home of Star Wars and its visual prowess and I had a fun time seeing it.
>> Um, all right. I I'm I Okay. Um, I forgot the other thing I wanted to say is Scourney Weaver's great. You know, been a big fan of hers for a long time.
Seeing her pilot and X-Wing took me out the movie again for a second. I'm just like, nah. And it has nothing to do with her being a woman, obviously. I love Ripley. I love the alien movies. Um, it was it was an old person who like just I don't picture as a pilot at all in a in a movie like in a Star Wars movie like this. But that's just me. My my girlfriend said, "Oh, you're sexist."
I'm like, "I'm not sexist. I'm agist.
There's a difference." Uh, I am going to I'm not I don't don't be mad at me. I'm going to give it a 7.5 out of 10. Um, >> you son of a [ __ ] >> Still a passing grade, but again, but with the pacing issues, um, uh, and a couple things that like kind of took me out of the movie for a moment, uh, made it made it difficult.
Um, I was going to go eight and then then when I remembered Swigourney Weaver flying an X-wing and Dave Fona flying an X-wing, I was just like, "All right, that's taking a half a point off." Like, like, nah.
>> Because again, they felt like those those felt like those felt like um well, Fon is his movie, so whatever. But the Sigourney Weaver felt like I'm friends with someone and I want to be in a Star Wars movie, you know? not not again not not to take it away from her but uh yeah she didn't need to be the pilot at the end um that saved the day as well. So that is our thoughts boys and girls that is our rating that is what we thought of the movie. Maybe we got it right. Maybe Don got it wrong.

Like it's like scrolling Facebook and then boom, you're seeing like the end of the goddamn series. So, um I don't know. Good luck.
>> All I All I know is I I again I watched season one and and and was out and everyone is complaining about how they're treating how how they broke the Homelander character this season. So, I don't know. apparently like he's not the same character basically. Uh I've seen quite a few posts about that. So I don't know. Um I learned that if you make a Star Wars movie, it doesn't matter how bad it is, Don will love it. And I'm not saying this is a bad Star Wars movie, but I'm saying you defend Rise of Skywalker. So, your your Star Wars is your ride or die.
