Police bodycam footage provides transparent documentation of law enforcement interactions, capturing real-world encounters including arrests, rights readings, and legal procedures. In this case, two 19-year-olds were arrested for shoplifting groceries worth approximately $1 and obstruction of justice for running from police. The footage demonstrates key legal procedures including Miranda rights readings, the bail system (with $1,500 per charge for shoplifting and obstruction), and the judicial process where suspects appear before a judge the following day to determine release conditions. The video illustrates how bodycam recordings serve as official records of police conduct and help ensure accountability during law enforcement interactions.

>> Oh, no. I'm just nervous and I I'm okay.
Just a little scared? Yes, I'm okay. All right. Well, that's understandable. It's not It's not everyday people are in contact police, right? Yeah.
Okay. No worries.

>> Okay.

>> Okay, yeah.
>> Okay. Just sit tight, okay? Don't go nowhere.
I don't want to have to chase you down, all right?
You say your wallet's in here? Yeah, it's it's black.
Black wallet. Oh, there it is.
This one right here? Uh yeah. Okay.
IT IS UH IT'S It's in the It's Yeah, it should be in there somewhere. Yep, I think I got it. Hold on.
Right there? Yeah.
Okay.
Put this back in your bag here, okay?
Okay.
Have you read this guy his rights?
Do you know if he read this guy his rights yet? What's that?
>> Do you know he's read this guy or yet?
No. No, not yet. No.
Make sure she was not injured. She's not claiming any pain. She's a little scared. Little scared, okay. First time dealing with police, she said. Yes, sir.
Decline aid. She declined aid? Yes.
Thank you, sir.
All right, I'm going to read something to you, okay?
You have the right to remain silent.
Anything you say can be used against you in a court of law.
Do you understand each of these rights I've explained to you?
You do? Okay.
All right.
So, what what's going on today?
Uh Well, what happened was we went into Safeway. We were getting groceries, so just food and stuff. And >> Okay. Yeah.
And we just we just yeah, we just didn't pay. You just didn't pay for it?
>> just what happened. Okay, what did you guys all take?
We got a bag of um like frozen orange chicken and like a box of muffin mix and I think top ramen and maybe like chips. Okay. I I can't remember what else was in the bag. Like stuff like that. Okay. Yeah. So, I just got to ask, why didn't you guys pay for it?
We can't Well, I can't really we just >> [snorts] >> we can't really like afford like food and like we could have just gotten like a couple things, but Yeah. simply we just sort of just we just we're like we just uh we just didn't You just what? We just stole we just stole. Yeah. Okay. I know.
All right.
Uh she's read her rights. Did you read her Yeah, I just read it.
Where is she from? Where is she from?
Yeah. Okay.
I'll to you for a second. Would you mind grabbing that groceries from one of those back side of my back seat?
Absolutely. Is it just all those right there? Okay. There might be some of their belongings in there, too. So Okay.
All right, you okay if I grab all the the stuff out of your bag? Uh yeah, I think my wallet is in there, but Okay, I'm just saying I'm just No, the wallet's yours. I'm just talking about all the stuff. Yeah. Okay.
All right, I'm just going to move it over to my car just so I can make it easier and then I'll grab everything out, okay?
You'll get all your stuff back.
Okay. So, my name is Officer Gribble. I work for the police. And my camera's on recording right quick. So where did you see me at all when we were first trying to find you guys?
Cuz I saw It's Cody, right? Yeah. Okay, is uh what's your guys' relationship?
He's my boyfriend. Boyfriend. Okay, cool. So, he saw me and then just took off running. And then I came around the building and then saw both of you guys run. Just being honest, okay? Yes. So, what was going on with that? The the running? Yeah.

Well, we like I didn't see you at first come up like but I thought I saw like lights and then when you guys like came in like in the parking lot, I did see you guys and then we ran because we were scared. Got you. So, we just ran but you know, no point.
We just we just ran. Okay. That's that's what happened. That's fair. When you guys were in the store, did like what was your was your guys' plan to like take the food or what was going on?
Well, I mean, we were just like grocery shopping, you know, for like food, but we just like, you know, can't afford all of it, and like we just kind of thought like maybe we can just get this and just just get it, and it would be okay.
Okay. Maybe, but just I know it's not okay to do that. It's not.
But, no, yeah.
Okay.
Fair enough.
So, there are programs, there's food banks out there that help you guys get food.
>> Yeah. There's it it's a problem, I understand that, but there are other better solutions for those problems, okay? Yeah.
Just want to confirm everything else looks all right in there, right? Um >> I just got all the grocery items. Yeah.
Oh, yeah. I think that >> all looks good? Yeah. Okay.
Again, I just took out all the grocery items that were in there.
But, I'll leave that with you, okay?
So, just in case my other partner didn't tell you, um you guys are both under arrest for the theft, and for obstruction for running, okay?
So, not the end of the world, but right now you're going to the jail with us, okay?
So, we'll work through it. We've got a female officer here, she'll deal with you, and then we'll go from there, okay?
Okay. I Go ahead. You got a question?
Sorry, I'm trying to trying to talk. Mhm. Take your time.
I was just going to ask, um so, like, how how does, um like, the rest of it uh work?
So, >> going to the jail, and like, how do we get like released and when do we get released? Like how does that all go for us? So, you got you'll have a couple different options. If you guys want to bail out, you can bail out tonight, right?
Uh if you can't afford bail, then you can you can wait to see the judge. Uh what time is it right now?
It's uh it's 11:50, so you'll see the judge tomorrow at about 1300 about 1:00 p.m.
1:00 p.m. tomorrow? Yep. And judge will make a determination of whether or not he wants to grant bail or if he wants to just release you on personal recognizance. Basically, what that means is uh you promise to show up in court and then he'll release you.
But it's up to him. He >> to understand this uh uh uh release.
Like if he like decides to just release us >> Mhm. like while we're being seen at 1:00 p.m.? Right. So, when he sees you at 1:00, he'll give you an opportunity to, you know, briefly describe what happened and just determines, you know, you'll be able to talk to me and say, you know, explain your situation, plead guilty not guilty, whatever you would like to do at that time, right? And then he'll say, "Okay, I'm going to set court for this date and time. Until then, I'm going to release you on what's called personal recognizance."
>> I love you.
And so, what that means is he's going to give a court date and you're promising to appear in court on that date and time and so he'll release you, right? Or he could say, "Okay, court's set for this date and time. I'm going to hold you on bail." Which means then you can uh pay bail and then you can be released, right? Or he could say, "I'm going to hold you without bail." Which means that that you'll stay in jail until your court date.
Okay. So, those are the those are the three different options that he could choose. I I don't know which one he'll choose for you. It depends upon your situation, uh the seriousness of the crime. This is pretty minor. It's uh you know, it's it's shoplifting.
Um and the obstruction that the officer was talking to you about is because you ran from us.
Yes. Okay. Okay. So, So, like we head in to to jail to uh Tonight.
>> Tonight. Yep. And then would we like if if no one can bail us out tonight, do we basically sleep there?
>> Yeah, you sleep there until uh tomorrow and you'll see the judge uh around 1:00 p.m. Around what?
Yeah.
Okay. And then how much is bail for for like For what you guys did tonight? Yeah. So, it's $1,500 per charge. So, it'd be uh $3,000 each uh because you have uh two two different charges. You'll be having shoplifting third degree, which is a misdemeanor, and the obstruction, which is a gross misdemeanor. So, our misdemeanor bail amounts are $1,500 a piece.
And then of course uh that's cash bail.
So, you can pay 3,000 up front or you could do a uh bail bondsman and it'll be 10%. So, 300.
Okay. So, for me if if I had someone bail me, it would be 3,000?
If they if they wanted to do cash bail, yes. But, they could also do uh bail a bond. A bond. Yeah. Bail bonds.
Which is generally 10%.
>> [snorts] >> Okay.
Yeah, I don't think anyone can afford to bail me out tonight.
Mhm. Or pay for me.
So, so in that case, you know, to be honest with you, you you would stay in our jail in here in Kirkland. Our jail is pretty nice. You know, there's not a whole bunch of people in there. It's not It's not like you're in King County or anything like that, okay? You're going You're going to good people jail. So, our jail is pretty uh pretty small.
Uh you'll be in there with limited people. We have a large correction staff that's there all all night long. And then like I said you'll see the judge tomorrow and the judge will make termination on you know how he wants to release you.
Okay.
And are me and him at like the same jail?
>> Yeah, yeah you'll be at the same jail.
It's the Kirkland jail here right here in Kirkland. But like is it like divided like genders?
>> Yeah, yeah. So you'll you'll be in separate rooms or separate cells.
Okay.
Okay? Am I in there with a bunch of people or is it just me?
>> so there'll be several other women in there with you.
All right then, what's your name?
Stephanie.
>> Stephanie, okay. Let's stand up.
You're going to be facing American flag over here. I'm going to search you.
Okay.
Do you have anything on you that's going to stick me or poke me?
No. Anything illegal? No. No drugs? No, no, no. Weapons? No. This is my bag.
She's got her wallet and stuff in it. I think there's weed or something. Yeah.
We'll have to throw it away.
Now, we need to head back to understand how things pan out with the male suspect.
Stand up.
All right, go and take a seat down on the curb.
All right, let's get you out of the middle of the road.
Stand up.
I'm going to push you forward a bit.
Thank you.
All right, over here. Let's go sit on the curb.
We've got two detained. Move over.
All right, go and take a seat on the curb.
Anything on you? No. Actually, I do have a knife on me. You have a knife? Where is it at? Uh right here on the outside.
Okay, let's get it. Thank you.
All right.
Hold on to this for now, okay?
I'm going to get your bag out of the street. Okay.
>> You want to move him down around the corner a little bit so I can have some personal space. Yeah.
All right, go and pop up again. Move him around the corner.
Okay, there you go.
All right.
And if it's more comfortable there's some cinder blocks back there that are a little higher. Okay, thank you.
>> Sit on this.
>> [snorts] >> Okay.
So at this point you're under arrest. Okay.
So my name's Officer Grimble with the Fremont Police.
Body cam's on and recording. Okay. Okay.
So you guys started running as soon as you saw me. Yeah, okay. We reported you guys or people matching your description stealing some stuff from Safeway. Okay. Okay.
Turn the lights on, you guys start running. Got some instruction. Okay.
Okay. So what's going on tonight?
Uh we were just trying to get some food.
Okay. I hear Yeah.
Stealing stuff and running from us is not the way to go about it. Okay. Okay.
You have any ID on you? Yeah. Okay. Is it in your back pocket? Yeah. All right.
Right there? All right.
Go and take a seat again.
How old are you? Uh 19. 19? Okay.
Hey Sasha, can you hang out with them for a sec?
I'm just going to get my car out of the way.
Just so you know, my camera's on recording, okay?
WHY DID YOU RUN?
I DON'T KNOW. HUH? I DON'T KNOW. You don't know?
Who's this to you? My girlfriend. Your girlfriend?
Do you guys have like warrants or something? No. No?
Then what was the purpose of running?
Just the flashing lights, I don't know.
Never ends well.
All right. So, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in a court of law. You have the right at this time to talk to a lawyer and have him present with you while you're being questioned. If you cannot afford to hire a lawyer, one will be appointed to represent you before questioning if you wish.
You can decide at any time to exercise these rights and not answer any questions or make any statements. Do you understand these rights? Yeah.
I'm coming out.
What did you guys take?
Just some food. Just food?
Who do you guys live with?
Uh in Cleveland. In Cleveland?
Just two of you together or with family?
Yeah, parents. With parents? You got no food at home? What? You got no food at home? Uh What kind of food did you take?
Uh a little bit of everything, I guess.
Like what?
Uh some chips and some chocolate and some chicken.
Got any drugs on you or anything like that? Uh yeah, there's some marijuana in there. It's mine.
I don't care about the marijuana. I don't care about the weed or anything like that. I care about the hard stuff, fentanyl, meth, Nothing like that?
>> No.
Did you hear the officer telling you to stop? What?
>> Did you hear the officer saying stop?
No. No? Just the lights? Yeah.
And at what point did you stop? Um when my when she got tackled. Oh.
How old is she?
19. 19? How old is she? 19. 19? What county?
So, you said that they stole chicken, chips, chocolate. Yep.
>> [snorts] >> You got anything first? Anything on you?
What?
>> Anything on you? Anything you concealed on your on your person?
Like what?
>> Like any other chocolate?
>> Uh, no.
>> Nothing? Just in the bag? Yeah.
Do you think we're going to be able to go to home tonight or Uh, it's going to be up to your primary officer.
Okay.
If they said to book you to the jail, then it's going to be $2,500 bail.
Okay.
Do you want to see what the cell looks like? Huh? Uh, both for that construction. Okay. So.
I'm going to bring my car around over here cuz I'll take the male if you're okay to take the female. Absolutely.
That way it just keeps it streamlined.
So, I'll pull my car around and I'll grab him.
Are you able to loosen these for me?
Uh, yes, officer. He'll be able to do it for you once he's ready, okay?
He'll uh, take you to his car, he'll search you, and then he'll fix the cuffs. Okay.
So, it looks like you will be booked into Kirk County Jail tonight. Okay. You won't be able to make it make it home tonight unless you pay the bail.
Uh, it looks like you'll be booked for theft by art and obstruction. Okay.
And then, yes, you'll have the opportunity to see the judge tomorrow 1 p.m. Okay.
And it's going to be up to him if he wants to set a bail or he will be released tonight. Question on the property search. Okay.
Have you ever been in jail before? No.
You never?
What about your girlfriend? No. No?
Why did you say you said you just steal?
Couldn't tell you.
What's the problem with searching me and checking his handcuffs? take this Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, for sure. So, I'm going to grab your wallet. It's all going to come with us. You get all your stuff back. Uh I just don't want to find a knife on you. I just don't want you to have it on you anymore.
Let's go ahead and pop up real quick.
We'll walk over to my car.
I love you. I love you. I'll see you in a bit.
Good luck.
It's going to be all right.
So, where are you guys from? Uh here, Kirkland. Kirkland? Okay.
Do you know where the jail is in Kirkland? Uh like next to Fred Meyer?
>> Yep, you got it.
All right, so we're going to do step off on the street and face the American flag.
Right here?
Yep, perfect.
Awesome, thank you.
Now, aside from the running part, I appreciate you guys being cool with this.
Do you guys have a car or anything? No.
Okay.
So, unfortunately, the lighters can't come in, so we're going to have to toss those, but >> Uh that's fine. So, uh the wallet, pocket knife, all that, that can go with you. It's just going to go through property.
All right, go ahead and lift your hands up real quick.
>> [groaning] >> Thank you.
You have a lot of lighters on you.
There you go.
All right.
Have a seat. Watch your head. Uh do you want me to check those handcuffs real quick?
>> Yeah.
All right.
Sorry.
It's all right.
So, one must go. Part of it's cuz you got the wristbands on. So, is it the left or the right one? Uh both of them. Both of them. Okay. Well, I can get my whole finger on your left one. So, Yeah, this one is the tight one there.
Yeah, I mean It's the uh wrist band here that's kind of caught under it, too. That's not helping.
So, I'll try and get that one out for you. Thank you. If you keep the back of your wrists together, um other way around.
So, kind of like that.
That should make it a little bit more comfortable.
So, there we go.
So, I can get a whole finger under both of those, so those are both fine.
They're not too tight, per se. Um but if you keep the back of your wrists kind of touch together like Now, it's kind of hard to see. Like that, that'll keep you a little more comfortable for you, okay?
All right. There's a little pocket for your hands back there.
And then I'll get the seat belt buckle for you, okay? We'll be out of here pretty quick.
Lean forward just a or lean back just a sec.
Awesome.
And we'll get you going in a minute, okay?
All right. You all right okay back there? Yeah. Okay.
So, are we both going to be charged uh 2,500 each or what?
Uh so, yeah. So, the way it looks at right now, um because you guys were doing it together, uh you're both getting the theft and you're both getting the obstruction.
Uh So, because you guys were Just slide this one. Uh it's not working.
Uh so, basically because you guys were together doing the thing, um right now it stands that uh you're both getting charged with the theft and both for running.
Uh Um Oh, it's still her choice to do it. So, you guys are both adults.
So, I'm uh still talking to the primary officer.
Um So, you're you guys are both going to the same place.
Um it's separated male and female, so you're not going to be like in the same room or anything, but she's not going across the city or over to county or anything like that. Um and then it's up to the primary officer if he wants to hold you guys or just get you guys fingerprinted and cut you loose for the night, okay?
So.
Uh it's the end of the world.
So, we're going to be in front of the judge together then? Uh it depends on how they want to do it. The whole court process is outside of our scope.
Um but for the initial like booking process, we've got to keep you guys separated, so they're going to handle her stuff and then we'll get you knocked out.
Um do you think uh there's possibility that we'll be out by the morning time or Um it's for it's right around midnight, so usually that's kind of the cut off. Um so they might try to get you out first thing, but I can't guarantee that.
So.
And then I'll make a phone call and see what I can do. Um I said it depends kind of on the primary officer what he wants to what he wants to do. Uh >> [clears throat] [snorts] >> I mean, it it not the crime of the century, but if you are going to run, which please don't run, um I would really strongly advise not running into the road cuz there drunk drivers out and they will hit you and you you will lose that battle every time. So, please just stay out of traffic.
Um just the last thing I want to have happen is you guys get hit by a car because I mean, you already made one bad choice, but don't make another one and make it a thousand times worse than it already is.
So, um this is is what it is, but yeah, I don't want you guys to get hurt over it either, so.
It was later determined that Cody and Stephanie stole a total of $1 worth of groceries.
The video currently on screen shows a separate shoplifting incident where a concerned customer stopped the suspect and recovered more than $1,000 worth of merchandise.
