To grow large potatoes, use a progressive heaping technique where you add organic material (such as sheep's wool or straw) higher and higher as the potato plant grows, while simultaneously removing small potatoes that form along the stem; this method encourages the plant to direct energy into producing larger tubers above ground level rather than small ones.

#SSPC2026 Robocrop & Oliver Get Planted 🌻 Happy 64th Birthday To Me, I Don't Look A Day Over 21Added:
Oh, welcome back my gardening friends to Steve Digwell Greenfingers #singleseedpotatochallenge2026.
If you hit any of the hashtags, that'll take you to everybody's video that can actually upload. Now, me and Olivia are going for the largest potato.
This bed had manure 24 25 and it's got manure 25 26 covered with sheep's wool. Well, we're going to use the sheep's wool as the heaping up material.
So, we've got I've got three chits.
Got three there that are still not growing very well, but uh that looks very promising.
So does that one there.
But for sheep's wool, we're going to pop these two in. Now, it certainly looks Well, they're very dry as well.
They're already throwing their runners out.
But we'll be looking for a giant potato hopefully growing above the ground.
Not sure which ones which potatoes these are, but we'll be planting them like that and we're not going to be heaping them up. All we're going to be doing is adding sheep's wool higher and higher as as they grow and then during the process, we'll be pulling the sheep's wool up back and taking any small potatoes off. That's if these work like this.
But like I said, I'm more interested in those now than the ones with the the leaves on.
This one's doing exactly the same.
We don't know what variety it is. I think it's a main crop because they're not growing very quickly.
I'll get my two in and then we'll put Olivia's two in.
I'm not adding any amendments.
These have dried out really really quickly.
There's part of the seed potato there.
Let's not disturb it, you fool.
And then we'll keep adding more more and more sheep's wool.
So, that's those two. I'll spin you around and show you Olivia's.
As she's called as Oliver.
Part of the rules are to show you uh us planting them. Oh, where's Olivia's?
I need to take the uh small ones.
Just having two beds. So, the next bed will just be soil, but we'll top it up with uh straw.
Really been enjoyed using the uh sheep's wool. I'll leave the playlist uh for some of the other creators that are using uh sheep's wool on their allotments and growing spaces. We'll have to water these well.
Even though we've had lots of rain.
All these beds have been prepared exactly the same, so the challenge will be between me and Olivia if uh things don't grow as well.
As you can see the or hear or feel the wind there.
So, that's uh Olivia's in. That's Oliver. Robo Crop's in.
And I'll just show you where Robo Robo Crop is being planted in a normal bed, but these will be topped up with straw similar to the one on the right.
And that one's a spare to go in the container.
Mhm.
And there's Olivia's two spares. I'm not going to put any straw on these yet. I want them to start cuz those those potatoes there that you saw a while and with just the chits and they were wet through so they aren't pulling up any they're not using up any moisture like the others were.
So what a difference it makes but we'll get those potted up in the future.
When I've got some time.
These are some of the condors but they're in straw.
There's one Manatu in there that will be done in sheep's wool.
There's one performer there at the moment. There's one sitting at home waiting to be bought up.
There's two Manatu in straw so you can see the thing here. I'm doing two Manatu straw, two Manatu in sheep's wool.
And there's the two Condor in the sheep's wool.
Good luck to everybody who's taking part in Steve's single seed potato challenge.
The potato is an unknown variety to us.
Only Steve knows uh what it is. Uh check out his videos and uh the seed supplier. They're very very kind to him every year.
Uh so check those out and why not perhaps next next time order some from there.
But these raised beds I've just got old pallet collars on the top. We put the these in. We need to get the homes growing straight up, not flopping over because that way they'll get as maximum light which will create the nice big tuber that I'm looking for.
I think it's all a little bit of luck but some people just plant them in buckets and they get massive potatoes.
Doesn't work with me because I use me homemade compost. But we do love little potatoes, so we're going to be grabbing those as they grow. If you like the content, give me a thumbs up or a thumbs down. Check out that hashtag. Have a little look at some other creators.
And if you like what they do, then why not consider subscribing to them?
Leave me a comment. Help if you can.
Come on, Arthur.
Be happy.
>> [laughter] >> Oh, lost the trailer thought there, guys.
Happy gardening to you all. Till next time, my friends.
Ta-ta for now.
