This review brilliantly exposes the hilarious gap between the film's high-stakes ambition and its bargain-bin execution. It’s a sharp, entertaining autopsy of a movie that manages to be both a shameless clone and a complete technical disaster.

Robowar - Good Bad or Bad Bad #235Added:
He throws a grenade and the sound he Yes. The sound he makes when he throws the grenade, HE GOES and he even does like a little like like he I was like, "Your legs hurt, bud, not your arm. What are you doing?
Hello and welcome back to the 235th episode of Good Bad or Bad Bad. The show watch terrible movies tell you if you should too. I'm your host, Mr. Kylin.
Joining me as always, the other host, Mr. Brian Schill.
>> Hey, I'm tall now. I don't have to live a life of peeing a short king.
>> Oh god, I don't know what happened there. I'm Mr. Brado joined as always by the other host, Mr. Kyle Hint. Kyle, today this movie you found.
>> Yes. This was a suggestion from uh one of our patrons.
>> Yes.
>> Uh and it literally described as Timu Predator.
>> And boy, what an accurate description.
>> Could not be more accurate. The film we're talking about today is 1988's >> Robo War.
>> Kyle, you're not wrong. This movie is just Predator. We'll get to it. But how much it's just Predator is absurd. It's >> woof. Uh, but it's also a Bruno Mate film, which I don't know if we've done a Bruno Mate film before. Well, we have actually. Sorry. I have a note here. He was the uncredited director. He worked under tons of pin name pseudonyms over his whole career.
>> Yeah.
>> Uh, he did Night Killer, which we've done.
>> Okay. Yeah, that was the one I was thinking of.
>> Yes.
>> Hey, bud. What happened to your clothes?
I got molested in a little boy's room.
>> 80s schllock slasher killer type.
>> He did a ton of like be he was he's he's a just a classic Italian be movie director. Uh this one was written by Cladio uh Frago who is uh the writer director of Troll 2.
>> Yeah, >> they're eating her.
>> They're going to eat me.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh my god.
Uh, they also made Terminator 2 together. Not the real Terminator 2, but >> the fake knockoff of Terminator.
>> Ruthless Terminator, >> but not Lady Terminator.
>> No, not Lady Ter. He might have done I don't know.
>> Jesus.
>> I don't know. Uh, but this one it says a film by Vincent Vincent Dawn. uh which I looked up and he worked like I said under tons of pseudonyms and Vincent Dawn was one of his most popular pseudonyms that he worked under >> um star of this film. We got a return.
>> That's my next note in all caps >> of Rev Brown.
>> Rev Brown, baby. Yes.
>> Captain America himself.
>> Cap Captain America himself. Uh here's the photo of us with him at a ComicCon 10 years ago or whatever. Uh yeah. No, Re Brown is the is the main is the is the protagonist. He's our He's our Arnold Schwarzenegger standin for this one. Uh with uh no offense to Rev Brown, none of the charisma that which Reb Brown can be fine in things, but he does nothing IN THIS MOVIE.
>> INCOMING. GET OUT OF HERE. COME HERE.
>> IT LOOKED LIKE it felt like they were trying to just make him like Tom Behringer and Platoon a little bit.
>> You all know about killing.
>> I'd like to hear about it. Potheads.
Yeah, he's he's not doing anything obviously like Arnold Schwarzenegger in uh Predator, but he is the protagonist of this movie. Um, so the film opens up, uh, and we get this, it's the opening credits, and we get this montage as we cut back and forth.
>> And one of the main things we see is this firsterson view footage that is supposed to be what the the the the hunter they call it, which is our predator, which spoilers in this movie is not an alien.
>> And the reason it's called Robo War is it's a robot.
>> Yes, >> it's a killer robot. Whatever tech they use to create this predator vision is barb. It's it's like stone age barbarism.
>> It's awful. You can't tell what you're looking at. Like 99% of the time. There are like two shots in the movie that are like a closeup of like a person when the predator the the robot's looking at it.
You're like, "Oh, I see. It's a person."
>> Half the other guy. You got no clue what he's looking at.
>> It's just orange pixelated nonsense. It it literally could be anything. I had that note later. Like they could have used any they could have put that effect over hardcore pornography and you would have no idea that that was what was playing. It's absurd.
Um but they constantly cut to it and in this beginning I'm pretty sure it's like >> going to say that would explain how inaccurate the thing is when it's shooting his laser. It can't see a goddamn thing.
>> That's true. That's true. Yeah. But uh at this opening scene, I'm like the footage they're using, you can see there's like buildings blowing up and on fire. And I'm like, is this like public domain war footage from like the Vietnam War or something? Horror.
>> Go from hut to hut blowing.
>> That's what I'm wondering. Or or my thought is actually probably what it is is footage from another movie they made.
That wouldn't surprise me. Repurposed and with this effect over it so you can't tell. It's >> it's a bunch of footage from uh uh Chuck Norris's Delta Force or whatever.
Yeah, it literally anything. Or and again, these people made hundreds of movies, so it could be any of their other movies. They just slap this over it to use it.
>> Do you think I guarantee you they they had a stock room in their for their company just called Explosion [ __ ] >> Yes.
>> And that's where they pulled this from.
>> Yeah. Uh, but while this is all going on, we're also cutting to this helicopter that is flying over the jungle.
And Kyle, what is happening with this helicopter?
>> I don't know. I thought this helicop So I thought this helicopter was like the uh the research teams or whatever.
>> Omega 1 depends on a central memory bank.
>> It must be central memory bank.
>> I don't know what it's supposed to be cuz they just cra they explode and we never see them. No, they get shot down.
>> Yeah, sorry. They get shot down and explode and we never see them again.
>> On target. On target.
>> But what's going on here is we keep cutting to them and they're like, "Uh-oh. Uh-oh. We're having trouble.
Mayday." And they're like freaking out that like something wrong with their helicopter to the point where it cuts to them and one time the guy goes, "We have lost control." But then every time they cut to the shot of the helicopter, it's flying normally.
>> Yeah. Normally.
>> And you're like, "What is going on?
>> We have lost control." Oh, repeat. We have lost control.
>> Give us visual breakdown.
>> It's flying perfectly fine and then Oh, surprise. I just get shot by a laser.
>> Yeah.
>> And you're like, well, what what do you mean you're crashing? You're not crashing until you got shot. So stupid.
>> Crashing out. Heyo.
>> Hey yo. But yeah. So they get shot and explode. Then cut to uh the montage, the slideshow introducing our rag tag group of misgreants who are our heroes. Kyle.
>> Yes. Because this movie is just Predator, we have to introduce all of the members of our our our crack team uh that is going in to to do this secret mission.
>> Sunny Peele, martial arts expert. His friends call him blood.
>> Uh and we're introduced to them all and their different specialties. There's like a demolitions guy, there's a recon guy, whatever. Blah blah. It doesn't really matter. Uh, but we get to Rev Brown, who is the leader of the the squad, and he his nickname is Killzone, >> multi-decorated field officer, better known as Killzone, >> which they never use again pretty much, but whatever.
>> It's great.
>> And also, they just refer to him as like Murf or Black. His name is Murphy Black.
>> Murphy Black. Yeah.
>> What a name.
>> Yeah. Incredible.
>> And this is our coordinator, Major Murphy Black.
>> Uh, and their but their group, their little squad, the coolest. So, let me tell you, Kyle, what do you think the their nickname for their squad is? Bam.
>> Bam.
>> Not I think it's B, right?
>> Bam. Big ass [ __ ] >> Oh. Oh, I guess it could be. I I'm pretty sure. I thought it was BAM because it stands for >> BMF.
>> True. It does stand for they say big ass [ __ ] not badass [ __ ] Big ass [ __ ] >> Uh, and yeah. So, I guess it could be BAM, but I don't think I swear they just say BAM.
>> Who knows? The audience. Yeah, it is hard to tell.
>> Um, also, I started watching this on YouTube, then I realized it was censored, like bleeped, and I was like, "Well, no, I'm not." So, I had to go watch it on TubeBu. The version on Tuby uh is not censored, but it it the frame rate's [ __ ] up on it. I swear it's missing like half the frames. It looks like it's running at like 18 frames per second instead of 24. It's all there, and it's like fine. It looks pretty good, but it's I swear the frame rate was messed up. It was weird. Um, >> but anyways, but I was like, I'm not I'm not watching one where they're bleeping every time they say [ __ ] I'm going to be I'm going to go crazy. Uh, but >> sort of like get to it and go get like a nun. They find out that their mission is that they well they don't find this out yet, but um uh we see the the two like guys who were putting together this team discussing in a separate little meeting and they're talking about how secretly what their mission this squad's mission is is they need to find and neutralize Omega 1.
>> What do you intend to do about Omega 1?
>> Just find him and uh neutralize him.
>> And we don't know what Omega 1 is yet. I mean, it's the robot. Like, we find out pretty quickly, but they're not going to tell Bam about or Bam for whatever about what their true nature of their mission is. So, they're in the dark on this mission or whatever. Then, we cut to them on a boat heading to this island, I guess, where this is all going down, which this was filmed in the Philippines. I don't know. I maybe that's where it's supposed to take place.
>> It would make sense.
>> Or I assumed that or South America. I don't know. But um they're uh they're on this boat and I love we cut to them and then we're kind of like see all of our cast of characters like each doing their own thing on the boat and this one guy is smoking a cigarette and now we'll find out he's not smoking a cigarette. I think he's smoking weed >> but he's doing it in a way that I had literally never seen before. He has the cigarette >> like that and then he cuffs it with the other hand >> and I was like why is he doing that?
Then I realized, oh, cuz then he hands it to the other guy and the other guy does that. I'm like, oh, they must cuz then one of the other guys is like, you you druggies. He's like makes a comment about them being like druggies. I'm like, oh, they're smoking weed and I guess this is the way to do it where they're not >> swapping spit by sharing a joint like traditionally. I guess I have never seen that before. I thought that was fascinating. I was like, it was so weird. Um, >> but uh they they they arrive at this little uh this little dock where they're they're on the island for their mission and I love they meet the guy their contact on this island um uh Masher I think is his name is Masher >> and they're talking to him and Red Brown is wearing the sexiest crop top in his [ __ ] He walks up.
>> Dude, it's so ridiculous.
>> He's got a pink crop top or blue maybe.
I can't remember.
>> Yeah, I think it's blue but yeah. No, it comes up to about about there. About there. It's pretty amazing. It's pretty amazing. Uh so that but they're walking down this like pier talking about their mission and then it hard cuts to them pulling up on the beach in full military fatigues fully decked out on like little rubber dingies like little like Navy Seal, you know, like incursion boats or whatever >> with no explanation. I was like, "Well, what was the part where you got on the boat? What like what was this?" And I think what it is, I'm like 99% sure what it is, is that the movie originally just had them showing up on this beach in their fatigues or whatever, and they're like, "We got to explain a little bit more of this." So they inserted the scene of them arriving on the beach talking to Masher or whatever as like exposition. It make >> It's so stupid. It's dumb.
>> Well, you know what they say, >> life's a [ __ ] then you die.
>> But I was like, what? Okay, I guess we're just now on the island where they're doing the mission. And then Kyle, for the first time in the movie, but certainly not the [ __ ] last, we get a five minute montage of our heroes wandering through the jungle >> set to some sweet '8s music.
>> Set to some pretty sweet music. It is I I wrote a note here. I'm expecting a lot of that in this movie. And boy, was I not wrong.
>> You were not disappointed.
>> I was not wrong at all.
Uh, also I was dying that the they have a a Chuck Norris lookalike. The guy with the headband. I I uh I can't remember the character. We'll get to it later, but can't remember that character's name.
>> I think it's supposed to be I think his name is Guido.
>> No, it's Guino.
>> Gorino. Okay.
>> It's He has an Italian name. It's Guino.
Yeah, that's what it is.
>> Sorry. Sorry for the uh very stereotypical >> questionable Italian uh Yeah. slang.
Yeah. No. Uh Guino is his name. Um, and yeah, but he kind of looks like Chuck Norris. It was cracking me like with his like five o'clock shadow and his headband. He He reminds me of Chuck Norris in uh whatever >> Delta Force the movies he was in in the 80s. Um, >> missing an action maybe.
>> Yes.
But then we get our other thing, the other idea they have in this movie, the other thing they remember and enjoyed in Predator is a scene where a bunch of guys shoot their machine guns into the jungle at nothing.
>> YES, >> THAT WILL HAPPEN LIKE FIVE TIMES in this movie, Kyle.
>> So good.
They're like, "Oh, you know that one scene at the beginning of Predator where they just mow down the jungle with their minigun or whatever? What if we just do that over and over again?" And this is the first one. And boy, it's nothing.
They just mow down a bunch of trees uh while screaming and then um they walk over there and they find the world's gooiest skeleton.
>> Is he still still >> Yes. Uh, this is the first evidence that something is a miss here. They find, they thought they heard something, but then they go over there and the guy, they're like, "What the [ __ ] Well, you didn't do that with your machine gun because that person's like melted. What What is going on here?" U, but yes, a very gooey skeleton.
Um, then while they're standing around waiting, they notice a sniper in the trees. One of them sees like a a glint >> and everybody just turns their guns and unloads on this thing. At first they spot the sky sniper. They all turn in a big group and go, "Hey, there's a sniper up there." And then they go, "Oh, that's interesting." And then they all split up and slowly crawl towards him from like five different directions, not being shot at at all the whole time. Like, "Guys, you saw he clearly would see you.
>> Are you sure about that?"
>> Yeah. And they all crawl up there and then, as you said, they all unload into this one sniper like a hund times.
like the the little underline of this the log line of this uh movie might just be deforestation.
>> Yeah. They just they unload into this the the the sniper in the tree and his body falls out of the tree and he is also a gooey weird [ __ ] up corpse and they're like, "Oh no, something's really going on here." And then we get another montage of them wandering through the jungle. Every every other line in my note >> sets of sweet music.
>> Every other line, every other note I have is literally and another montage of them walking through the jungle >> with the occasional firstperson view shot uh of the robot where you can't tell what the [ __ ] you're looking at.
And also you get the constant robot voice over >> which is it's incomprehensible.
>> Insane. Like you hear like a lost target changing targeted.
>> It It's like they're going for It's like I guess the idea is that it's like malfunctioning and so it's like maybe whatever, but it's just spouting gibberish. It It's You can't even understand what it's saying.
>> Trying to be like Terminator Vision.
>> Yes. Well, that's what they're trying to do with the vision. But the voice thing reminds me of like uh >> the [ __ ] short circuit or something like the robot in short like not >> A5 in the line.
>> Yeah. It's more like that. You're like, "What is going on?" It's so weird.
>> Number five is alive.
>> Then, uh, as they're wandering through the the jungle, one of the guys, uh, steps on Bloody, I think, is his name or no, I can't remember.
>> Yeah, just blood.
>> Blood. He steps on >> steps on a spike strap and he just bear traps his leg.
>> Clearly, a bunch of nails in a couple 2x4s that like spring shut on his ankle and he starts freaking out. So, his ankle gets [ __ ] up, but luckily um they're they have a doctor with them who's going to be able to take care of him. But while that's happening, Quang, who we or Quang Quang, I think is how he says it, but uh Reb Brag always calls him Quang.
>> Quang, take out the point. CORY GARINO, REAR GUARD.
>> But I'm pretty sure whenever he referred to himself, >> he's their he's their Billy character.
>> He is their Billy. Oh my god. We will get to it.
>> Yes. but he is the Billy of of this movie and he just disappears and wanders off while they're dealing with this and they're like, "Where did Quang go?"
Quango. And they're like, "I don't know." And so they they wander off in the woods and they find him. Uh he was going to kill it. He finds a snake which he was about to kill with his machete, but then he hears something, so he just throws the snake away. And I was like, "What?" Okay. And then he turns around and no, he finds more melted people. Oh no. Um, and so he's like, "Ah, there's more melted people." Blah, blah, blah.
Then this is where we really kick off the story in earnest. We get introduced to I don't remember her name in Predator, but yes, the same character from Predator.
>> I think it's like Maria or something.
>> I think you're right. It might be that where in this one literally she doesn't have a name in the credits is just >> Virgin. Virgin.
>> I think it's Virginia. I think I think we heard it at least once.
>> Okay. Okay.
>> Uh, but yeah. No, her credit is literally virgin. I was like, "Wait, what?"
>> Okay, sure.
>> Um, but she is running down this road with a few other people on horses and they're being chased by several guys or like a dozen guys in jeeps. Like two different jeeps chasing them and just like mowing them down with guns, you know?
>> Yeah. It was like a gorilla cartel or something like that that's just controlling the area.
>> A a a rainbow coalition. I love that they they're like it seems to be like some nation's like paramilitary group or something, but their ethnicities are all over the board.
>> It's they're oldectors from the French Foreign Legion.
>> Yeah, I guess cuz there's like white guys, there's like Filipino guys, there's all kinds of different people.
Like you're like, I don't know what what this army is, but okay. Um, and they uh but they like kill all these people, but they then like they they get up to her and they're like they have her at gunpoint and they're like they they're like have a a face off with her. Um, and uh our guys are like watching this from like a little bit away and they're like, "All right, well, we're going to have to do something about this. It's time. It means we're going to have to start settling some accounts or whatever." and one of the guys like his machine gun.
>> We're going to start settling some accounts here.
>> But we get this incredible comedy reveal where they pull up on their jeeps and they're like have her at gunpoint and they're going to like kill her and then the camera is like on them and it does like a pull out swing.
>> Oh, and they're LIKE RIGHT THERE.
>> THE ENTIRE PLATOON IS LIKE 2 FEET AWAY, KYLE. LIKE THEY DIDN'T SEE THEM at all and they're like surprise.
You think the cast was just like, "Hey, we need you guys to go uh come out of the woods." And they're like that that that's there's like [ __ ] in there. We don't want nobody in there.
>> All right, you can just stand there and we'll just like pull out and reveal you and you'll just be right there and somehow the bad guys just didn't see you, I guess. I don't know. Um but they just start unloading and murder every Oh, also I love they have this moment.
They've all been standing and I don't know. It's a little detail in the edit.
Kyle, I don't know if you noticed this.
Right before they start shooting everybody, the guy says like, "We're going to have to settle some accounts."
And they like [ __ ] their guns and stuff.
They've already used their guns a ton at this point.
>> Yeah.
>> They then show one of the guys pull like a leaf off of his gun like he had hid it hidden it some.
There's like, "Haha, surprise. I have a gun." But they weren't hiding the guns.
I don't It DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE, KYLE.
>> OKAY.
>> It's so stupid. But they murder all of these guys. They just again they were three feet from them. They just murder all of them.
>> I also feel like the platoon members, this is their new game plus because they just have infinite ammo.
>> Yes. Oh my god, they have so much infinite. Yeah, they this movie could not care less about how much ammo each of these they just a non-stop amount of bullets, which whatever, it's fine. Um, but they uh they murder all these guys and then uh they grab her and they're and they're like, "All right, well, we got to take her." And she says like that her village was that she was she's from the UN or she's like a >> We're missing we missed an opportunity for Rev Brown to give us just a banger oneliner >> where uh the last dude is like holding her. Oh, I forgot about that. I'll kill her. I'll kill her. And we just totally missed the part opportunity for Brown to go, I believe you. And then shoots him.
>> Nice.
three.
>> Uh yeah, but he he just counts down and the guy just freaks out and then he just shoots him. But as after they save her, they then spot in the distance the hunter they call it, which is the robot, which is Omega one, which is just Kyle, I cannot stress this enough.
>> Pads and a motorcycle, >> a guy in motorcycle gear and football pads that are all spray painted black.
That is what this is. It's incredible.
Um, but we so we finally see him for the first time like 20 or 30 minutes into the movie and yeah, just a guy in motorcycle gear. Uh, they decide they need to take her. Um, again, she was like a a doctor or a nurse or something.
There was a chalera outbreak or something that she was sent here to help with. And then the village, the hospital, the town she was in got attacked by these mil pair of military guys or whatever and killed every >> the entire village of Coronado was raised down to the ground. body. So, they're going to go back to her village where she was at to see if they can do anything about that. So, we get another montage of them walking through the jungle for [ __ ] 10 minutes. Then, uh uh they get to the village, which is San Pedro. Um and Masher, the guy who's in charge of this, is like, "This is stupid. We don't have time for any of this. We got to >> San Pedro is definitely in the Philippines then."
>> Oh, yeah. Well, it could also be South America somewhere.
>> I guess it could be, but >> I think it's supposed to be the Philippines.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Yeah, I don't actually know.
>> It was under Spanish rule before uh American >> because yeah, the Phil like there's a lot of Spanish over there. There's also obviously a lot of Spanish in South America. So, I don't know. It could be either either place famously. U but um they get to this little village which is like they have clearly constructed out of straw mats in like 10 minutes so they can blow it all up. Like all of these buildings are like the flimsiest little straw huts that they can blow up. Um, and they get there and again, Masher, the the guy in charge is like, "This is we don't have time for this. We got this tracking, >> major, this is not our mission. I suggest we keep moving."
>> Yeah. But they're like, "Fuck that." And so they also I know so they go in to attack, they start like a stabbing all the guards and stuff and then they unload and there's a big firefight and I know it was the style of the time period but it cracks me up how much not a single person in the movie ever aims their gun ever.
>> No, they just spray it all over the place.
>> Every single shot is somebody hipfiring JUST randomly spraying bullets. Every single shot. Nobody aims down their rifle once in this movie. It's [ __ ] incredible.
But uh I love there's this one really incredible shot where the injured guy uh is up against the thing and he throws a grenade. I have the time code, Kyle.
It's 4027 if you need this for your edit.
>> He throws a grenade and the sound he Yes. The sound he makes when he throws a grenade, HE GOES AND HE EVEN DOES LIKE A little like like he can't I was like your legs hurt bud not your arm. What are you doing? It's incredible.
>> You know he can't plant his foot for proper he doesn't have a solid base.
>> Oh god. You got to go to you got to throw that one from the wind up next time kid. That's you got to get a little extra power on that. He just It's so [ __ ] amazing. Uh Rev Brown kills the guy and then he winks at him after he kills him, which is fun. It's like great, amazing. He knives the guy.
>> Um and then so they they have like a 10-minute firefight blowing up, throwing grenades, shooting rockets at these buildings. I cannot stress enough. One guy pulls out an RPG and like blows up an entire building with an RPG. And then all of this goes down. They kill all of the guys. And after all of this violence and insane carnage in this village, Virginia or Virgin or whatever her name is comes running in and goes, "Where are the children? Where are the children?
WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN?
GET OUT OF THERE."
>> AND I WAS LIKE, "WAIT A SECOND.
Why didn't you You should have maybe said something before they started launching rockets into every building in this."
>> They go in there's a whole building full of dead children.
>> Yes. We thought this place was supposed to be desolate. We're being fired upon.
We're going to fire indiscriminately everywhere.
>> Yeah. And they find a like a building full of dead children that all just look asleep.
>> Yeah. They all look asleep cuz they're like they're not like because half of them are like on their side.
>> Yeah. And there's no blood or anything.
They're just They literally look like they're asleep.
>> They look like a bunch of kids having a nap time before they get their like cookies and milk.
>> But apparently they're dead. And I was like that they might have been killed BY OUR HEROES. LIKE THEY MIGHT HAVE BEEN MO OUR HEROES ARE JUST SPRAYING bullets randomly. I actually have no idea. It's incredible. Um but she's very upset uh that they're that that all the kids are dead that she was I guess there to help or save or whatever. Meanwhile, the robot shows up and kills Peele who is the blood or whatever.
>> Yeah. Who's the guy with the injured foot?
>> Yeah. Uh he gets murdered by uh the robot >> target.
Uh they see it in the distance and uh they they again this is where they dub it the hunter. I think it's I think it's Quang who calls him like the hunter. I I guess the idea is he knows.
>> What do you mean he?
>> The hunter.
Again, it's not He's just a robot, but it's fine. Um, we get more slow-mo shots of another guy shooting down a section of the jungle. Oh, and it's uh it's the Chuck Norris guy. Yeah, he freaks out because he was like best buddies with Peele or whatever.
>> He killed Peele. Peele was my friend.
>> Even though they have a very hostile relationship.
>> He was best buddies with >> it. It's like the platoon hostile buddy relationship >> where they they they pick on each other but actually deep down they really care for each other kind of thing. It's nice here. Right back home in Alabama. Up here, up yours.
>> And so he snaps and he goes on like a murder. He's like, I got to kill this thing for killing my best friend. And he's like running through the jungle just like spraying bullets into the into the trees and stuff. And uh he he runs out and while this is all happening, they need to go find him.
They're like, "We got to find him." And uh they we get this montage of them searching the jungle for him >> to like synth music.
>> WELL, BEFORE THAT BEFORE YES. Before that, we get it set to this like rock song. We listen to an entire rock song that is like not remotely tonally consistent with what is happening in the scene. In the scene, the moment is we're scared. There's this killer alien robot thing trying to kill us and we think it has one of our friends. We got to find him.
>> Yes. Um >> and THE MUSIC'S LIKE YOU'RE like the group and then gets cornered.
>> Yes, he gets cornered and we don't actually see this happen. I don't think >> No, I think I think we get like the predator vision and then it cuts to >> Oh, yes, you're right. Yeah, we hear a scream, >> but they they they do find his arm.
>> Yes, they find his arm and it was holding a dog tag which will be important for later. Yes.
>> Uh and one of them picks I think Kang or somebody picks up the dog tag and holds on to or no, it's a red brown bag.
>> Yeah. Um, but like you said, after the rock song, >> we got we got to find the rest of them now because, you know, they're like, "We got to find the rest of his body." And then we get a synth searching song or whatever. It's like synth 80s synth music.
>> Kyle, >> it's insane.
It makes no It could not be more tonal.
It's this like '8s synth jam that makes It's so tonally dissonant with what is happening in the movie. It's utterly insane. You're like Again, they're supposed to be scared. This is like a horror movie scene where they're like wandering through the jungle hoping not to be murdered. And it's just the sexiest synthiest [ __ ] that has ever happened.
>> This is like inquisitive learning investigation synth music and you're like that that's not what >> you you're following a blood trail. Come on.
>> It's incredible. It's so good, dude.
It's so good.
Uh they they empty their machine guns into the jungle again. It's the same thing over.
>> This is probably the most like like shot per shot.
>> Yes.
>> Uh where they're all like lined up together, firing into it.
>> Yeah. Yeah. And again, this movie has two ideas. The ideas are a montage of people walking through the jungle looking for this thing and shots of them unloading their guns into the jungle.
That is all that happens in this movie the entire time. Uh then uh we find out from Masher that uh he invented this killer robot.
>> Omega one is the perfect and ultimate weapon.
>> Hang on. I love the fact that M cuz everybody has like their big ass machine gun or or even like I think the doctor has like a an M4 or something like that and then they just give Masher a >> 12 gauge pump shotgun.
>> He's got a shotgun. Yeah, cuz he's he's an idiot. He doesn't know how to aim.
You got to give him the shotguns, I guess. I don't know. But yeah, but he he is he explains that he invented the robot, but they didn't get to finish testing and now it is like freaking out, malfunctioning, and they have to contain it.
>> Ooh. Ooh. Do you think the Incredibles watched this? Like Brad Bird watched this for the Incredibles?
>> Do I think the Incredibles watch?
>> Yeah. Yeah. Do you think Brad Bird watched this film for the Incredibles and he's like, "Ooh, ooh, bringing in a bringing in a hero to like test your robot."
Well, that's not what they're doing here, though. Or is it? Do you think?
>> I think Mashers like they bring in this platoon to test the robots killing these.
>> That's not the vibe I got. The vibe I got was that they had started testing this robot and then it went haywire and it is now on the loose running rampant and they bring this squad in to try to >> capture it and contain it so that they can use it.
>> My Omega 1 pitched against a real flesh and blood hero. like basically I thought was the idea, but you could be right that they're using them, but I but then Masher wouldn't be like embedded with them. You know what I mean?
>> Well, he has the control box.
>> He does have the control box. You're right.
>> Which quickly gets thrown away.
>> Yeah. Uh Billy say Billy Quang just throws it in the river. It's like [ __ ] your control box or whatever.
>> Hey, you crazy. You're crazy.
>> No.
>> Which also doesn't seem to work obviously, right? Like you can't do anything with it cuz the thing's rampant or just it's it's doing whatever it wants.
>> Good lord. What is this? Okay. Nothing.
Sorry. It was I thought it was emergency. It was not. I had like four little messages.
>> Um, so uh he picks up, we mentioned this earlier, but Reb picks up that uh dog tag from uh Guino's hand or whatever >> uh that says M. Woodring on it.
Lieutenant M. Woodring. And then we get a flashback >> to to Nam, right?
>> I think it's V. Yeah, I assume it's supposed to be Vietnam. I I don't know for sure, but where he is in his his platoon. What's up?
>> This [ __ ] scene, especially especially with what happens later, like a line of dialogue later.
>> Oh, I love it. Okay. But what happens in this scene is there his platoon or whatever is like attacking some position and they're sneaking through a field.
>> Yeah, they're trying to move and that field that field is a minefield.
>> It's a minefield and then one of the guys is like, I'll lead the way. And starts running.
>> He immediately steps on a landmine and dies. immediately gets blown up.
>> Marty, hang back.
>> And we see Reb Brown run over and be like, "No, >> NO, MARTY. MY BROTHER.
>> MARTY. MARTY. NO, MARTY.
>> NO, MARTY. Don't do it. Don't do it.
Don't do it, >> Marty. Oh my god."
>> Uh, yeah. But no, he he's like, "Marty, no." Uh, and he So, yeah, he we we find out that Marty died in his arms in Vietnam or whatever. You're like, "Okay, interesting." Um, because I I will say the movie got me. I didn't put together what was going on here and like what the twist reveal was.
>> Uh, again, so we watch that guy die and now again, so I was like, and for some reason, Gorino has that dude's dog tags.
It seems very obvious obvious in retrospect now why that is, but at the time they got me with the twist. Uh, but they get to this river that they need to cross.
>> Yes. And so they start trying to cross this river and the dock go they all get most of them get across. The doc is crossing >> and he gets stuck halfway across.
>> Well, he doesn't get stuck. He gets grabbed by the robot.
>> So you said well he something's got my leg.
>> Yeah. Something's got my feet.
>> Come on, Papa Doc. What the hell you talking about?
>> And then it starts pulling him under.
>> Yeah. And we get occasionally the the first person robot view from like under the water.
>> You can't tell what it is, so it's incomprehensible. But yeah. Uh, and so he gets grabbed and drugged down the river by the robot. We assume we never actually see the robot in the water. Um, but they like dive in to like try to save him and chase him down the river and they can't find him and eventually he just wakes up on the bank of the river and was like fine. I guess I guess the robot just let him go. I don't know.
I don't know what happened there.
>> Um, >> but so they uh and as you said, this is where Quang throws the the the control box in the river for some reason. I don't know why he did that. He's just like, "Fuck your robot box thing." And he's like, "Okay, I guess." And then, like I said, the doc survives and then he gets up and he starts running. I guess he's getting chased by the robot.
The robot drowns almost could have just drowned him and killed him, but lets him get on the shore, let him wake up.
>> More of a chase scene >> and then chases him. It makes no sense.
Um, but uh he then finds the other people and they're like, "Oh, thank God we found you, Doc."
>> But wait, there's more. He gets grabbed by the legs AGAIN >> BY DOC O. [ __ ] THE THING HAS A DOC O CLAW ALL OF A SUDDEN.
>> And I don't know what Kyle does it have an unlimited length claw arm thing because they're like, "Wait, what's that by your foot?" And they look down and there's this little claw that grabs his >> grabs him and just drags him through the forest. Was the robot standing right there or is the is does he have a like a 100 foot long?
THAT'S WHAT I'M WONDER. I DON'T KNOW, KYLE. I DON'T KNOW. I DON'T UNDERSTAND.
I don't get it.
>> Oh, but he gets him and I guess kills him. We don't we don't actually ever see, >> but stand.
>> Yeah. Now we get to the point where like we ain't running anymore.
>> We're not literally >> no more running.
We're going to fight this [ __ ] They >> So, they build a fortification, >> just a hut in the wood. Like, what's the what is the point of this? You know, he has like an infinitely powered laser blaster thing that will just kill you.
But they take a bunch of mines and grenades and [ __ ] and plant them all out in the field around this hut that they construct and dig into the into the field. And I guess they're going to hide in this hut or whatever. Meanwhile, Masher pulls out his little and we will find out what this is, but he's like he's got this little device, another device, >> which his little his device, it basically just looks like a Sennheiser mic receiver.
>> Okay, Kyle, my exact note was that he pulls that thing out and Rev Brown's like, "What's that?" And I'm like, "I'm pretty sure that is the battery pack/transmitter to a lavalier microphone." YES, >> BUT I DON'T KNOW BECAUSE I don't know.
That's exactly what it looks like. But I was like I was actually googling like 19 uh 1980s like lavalier mic pack. Like what do they look cuz I've never seen one from the8s. You know what I mean? I don't know what they looked like.
>> It looked very similar except for the fact that it just has a longer thicker antenna.
>> Yeah. Assuming that it's got to be what it was. It feels like >> What else like What else could it be?
>> I don't know. like what it looks like is it has a uh it has the antenna for a transmitter. It looks like it has a cap where the mic would plug into and it has a switch which I'm I'm thinking is for like uh R AF and RF uh >> could be signal.
>> And then it seems to have two AA battery spots is what it looks like. It's crazy.
Uh it also could be as far as we know like a [ __ ] garage door opener or something like it literally. I don't know but it was cracking me up. But he explains that this thing is a it's like a kill switch essentially.
>> It's for destroying him. Detonator >> that if he has to you have to aim it right at his head or something. You have to be No, you have to be within like a very short range.
>> Very close, >> which is like cool. That's a great safety precaution when it comes to your self-destruct sequence.
>> Yeah, you got to be two inches away from it. Okay, sure. Um, but he so he's got the thing and then uh the robot they say is able to sense their minds. He he is able to use his thermal vision which is supposed to be what we're seeing.
>> Explosive minds.
>> Yes. So he could see the them with his thermal vision I guess or whatever.
>> Yeah. So he's just like boom boom boom and just starts blowing them up.
>> Anyway, I started blasting.
>> So cool. So he blows up all the mines and then uh Masher is like here take this and gives Reb Brown a cassette tape player >> and is like play this you know here take this and then just goes out to sacrifice himself for some I couldn't why does this guy at this point in the movie who has been like a coward and a [ __ ] the whole time is like guys I'll go.
>> Maybe he wanted, you know, personal redemption or whatever. Even though >> there's nothing set up for that. It's so stupid. But he goes out there and he just walks up to the robot and holds the device.
>> Hold the device. The robot grabs his arm and then we see an ability that is never seen again in this film. He literally gener like just sends energy into his body or something and he explodes.
>> Yeah.
Get out.
>> And I was like, BUT ALSO WHY DID YOU WAIT SO LONG TO PUSH? HE LIKE HOLDS THE THING AND JUST looks at him and lets him grab him and dis. I'M LIKE, WHAT IS it's incomprehensibly stupid, Kyle? It's so stupid. It doesn't make any sense. It's dumb. Oh, it's so This is one of the more boring climaxes from one of these types of movies in a while.
>> Um, and then uh a different guy goes out there.
>> Yeah. to get the receiver thing or the transmitter thing.
>> Yeah.
>> Gets out there, sets his gun down, grabs the receiver box, and like smiles at it for like 30 seconds.
>> And then our Robo Predator boy, that's a that's a title. Robo Predator. Uh just it magically appears behind him and then punches him through the chest.
>> Yeah. And you're like, "Okay, >> okay. Well, cool. Great."
>> And nobody saw that.
>> I'm glad you just spent 40 seconds staring at the receiver.
>> None of the people you said, "Hey, watch my back." Or whatever. like, "No." Okay, cool.
>> Okay, cool. Great. Amazing. Um, so now it is down to Kang, uh, Reb Brown, and Virgin, and they're like, "We got to get to this." He's like, "We we can get to my house or whatever." And so they're on or like her hospital or whatever. And so they're on their way to her hospital and and they're being chased. And and uh I just keep calling him Billy. Quang is like, "Guys, >> this is his Billy moment.
>> I'll stall him. I'll buy you some time."
stupid, >> Kyle. It is just the scene from Predator, except he's not standing on a tree over a ravine, and he doesn't slice his chest open. But it is he strips down, pulls out a machete.
>> Yeah. Rips his shirt off, pulls out a machete, and just stands there like, >> I'm going to kill you. And then we He dies off camera like the It's the exact same could not be the exact more of the exact same scene. It's wild. Target.
>> So they get to the the old hospital and they have this plan that they can lure the robot there and then use the chemicals like the >> drug chemicals to make napal.
>> What are you thinking?
>> We have everything here to make napal.
>> Yeah. So they're going to make essentially a bomb and blow up the hospital once it gets there.
>> Well, surprise. It shows up immediately.
Uh oh. Before that happens, we get another flashback to figure out what all is going on here.
>> Yeah.
>> We find out uh or it might even be a flashback.
>> No, no, he plays the cassette. Plays a cassette. So, they need this bean, this Robo War. Robo Warrior.
>> Robo. Yeah. Should it be called Robo Warrior? Not so stupid.
>> Uh but it is the perfect mix of b of biometrics and like >> human or whatever. make him an invincible and indestructible war machine.
>> Yeah. Biology and robotics or whatever.
Yeah.
>> And so they they took uh his buddy from the war. They took his body and they No, not even Robocoped him. They universal soldiered him.
>> Oh, you're right. Yeah. Yeah, you're right. There's a subtle difference there.
>> Well, the I guess the subtle difference there is one of them was just a corporation taking a cop and the other one is the military taking dead soldiers and like reanimating them.
>> Yeah. So, he has his dead buddy from the war. Uh, and so they he finds this out over on the tape. The tape explains all of this. Like, well, that was convenient that he just explains all of this on the tape.
>> Um, and then he shows up, he arrives at the house and they start fighting. He like knocks Rev Brown through like a filing cabinet and then him and Red Brown are fighting.
>> Well, like he punches Red Brown in the chest, which I guess like if it's his buddy, maybe he's pulling punches. But he did that with the other dude. He killed him.
>> Yeah, you're you're right. You're not wrong there. Because though, but what happens then is Re Brown is able to talk to him. He's like, "Marty, Marty, no, it's me." And he's like, "Wait a second." And he like lets him go.
>> He pulls up the visor thing and you see Marty who's got that huge scar.
>> Yeah. He's got like robot scar on his face or whatever. Um, and so he's able to talk him out of killing him briefly and they're able to I don't remember exactly what happens, but they're able to get out of the house.
>> They throw the acid stuff onto him and mess with his citric acid or nitric acid or whatever. and he like short circuits and he short circuits and he freaks out and they're able to get out and then they light the fuse or whatever. They blow up the house and they might even shoot at it. I can't remember.
>> No, no, no. That uh Rebrand takes the dude's gun, the the laser gun that stuff up.
>> He's got the laser gun. Shoots the laser gun at the hospital. Boom. The hospital blows up and he literally says, >> "It's finally over.
>> It's finally over." And Kyle, obviously, >> it's an 80s action movie. It's not over until it's over, baby. And we just cut to them >> uh running for their lives on the beach, which is very strange because there's no setup that the robot has is returned.
They do it wrong, Kyle. The thing is like you you have the scene where they blow up the hospital and they think they killed the robot, right? Then you cut to them on the beach waiting for the boat and they're like uh holding arm in arm and then oh, THEY LOOK OVER, SURPRISE, HE'S THERE. AH, AND THEN THEY FREAK. NO, WE JUST CUT DIRECTLY TO THEM LIKE, "AH, THE ROBOT'S KILLING US." YOU'RE LIKE, "BUT YOU JUST BLEW HIM UP IN the >> Anyways, they're on the beach trying to wave down this boat and surprise surprise, Robo War is still alive."
>> So stupid.
>> Yes, he's still alive. Um >> I love how like he's trying to lead it away so she can like get to the boat or whatever.
>> He's like, "Go swim, >> swim, swim out there. Yeah, get caught in the riptide and get killed."
>> Well, the riptide will get her out to the boat quicker. That's >> Yeah, I guess so. with she's way more likely to drown out there.
>> Yeah. He's like, "Go just swim to the boat that's like hundreds of meters out in the ocean." She's like, "All right, I guess I will."
>> Um, but he leads the robot away and he takes him up to this waterfall. He finds a waterfall. Yes. And they have their final showdown on top of a waterfall, Kyle. And they're he's standing there on the edge of the waterfall. Oh, also the robot brought him the murder box.
>> Yes.
>> The robot went We and we get some legitimate acting chops from Reb.
>> We actually get a moment where Reb Brown has to act we get a we cue a quick flashback of Vietnam and Marty >> Marty's like you got you got to you got to put me put me >> put me out of my misery. Kill me.
>> I can't live like this.
>> Please Murphy, finish me off.
>> Yeah, you got to kill me. You got to put me out of my like end my pain or whatever. End my suffering.
>> Rev's like I can't do it. I can't do it.
>> I can't do it. And then we cut back to uh him in the current timeline where uh he's holding the box and he's remembering, well, I couldn't help him before. I'll help him now. And he pushes the button and then the robot's like, "You might want to you might want to jump."
>> Literally, the robot stands there and looks at him and goes and points and is like, "Get the [ __ ] out of here." And Rev Brown, or sorry, not Rev Brown, clearly the stunt double cuz they cut to a wide and it's like, "That is not Rev Brown, jumps off this waterfall." And as the the robot explodes, uh it's a pretty fun robot explosion. I will say they clearly uh ruined that waterfall ecosystem for a while going up a giant gasoline bomb on top of the >> [ __ ] insane. Um >> but the robot explodes and we see its corpse like fall over on top of the waterfall. Uh and Red Brown, I guess, survives.
>> Yeah. Yeah. He gets out of the water during the credits.
>> Oh, we do see him get out during the credits. You're right. You're right. Uh, but he survives the end. Amazing.
>> And then we get some screenshots. Uh, my favorite thing is that our first two guys who were killed, the uh, very Italian guy and our black dude, they their titles got switched.
>> Oh, did they? I missed that. It's incredible. Yeah. No, it's uh, yeah. Uh, they he saves the day. I guess I I This one's tough kind of.
>> This one's tough. Uh, it's short enough and fast-paced enough to not necessarily be boring. boring.
>> Yeah, you're right. I think it's good.
>> It is repetitive enough in certain ways.
>> I'll say it's good bad, but it's close because it does get it's very repetitive and it's kind of it's not super You're right. It's short enough and uh succinct enough that it's like it doesn't get super tedious or boring, but it is a little like, all right, I need another montage.
>> Blatant ripping off of scenes from Predator is >> it's very hilarious.
>> Yeah. And there are some really great moments of just silly little like what?
Okay. Like again that there's the sound effect when that dude throws that it's one of the funniest things in the whole movie. It's incredible.
That's going to do it for this episode.

>> Yeah, patreon.com. Uh, I have a podcast called This Film is Lit, where we talk about movies that are based on books.
When this episode's out, our most recent episode will have been it'll be into uh I don't know what it might have been. It ends with us, but if not, then I don't know what it is. It's what >> Battlefield Earth 2.
>> It's not Yeah, it's not that. I mean, our most recent episode was um uh Edge of Tomorrow.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah. Which is that's based on a a Japanese light novel and also that was turned into a manga at some point. But um that was our last episode. But now our next one is it ends us and then >> is it like follow what happens? Like does a Tom Cruz movie like actually follow?
>> It's pretty close for a lot of it. The end is very different.
>> I will say the exoskeleton [ __ ] does seem very anime.
>> Yeah. Uh that that like all of that is very much from the book. The the main Well, so the the big thing the big spoiler is that in the book the main character is an 18-year-old Japanese like fresh recruit in the army.
>> Shocker. Yeah.
>> Yeah. And in the movie, they would move it to like it's doesn't take place in Japan and it's a 50-year-old Tom Cruz.
Yeah. Uh who's like a propaganda guy or whatever. It's Anyways, you hear us talk about it in the episode. But yeah, um >> uh that's it. Oh, merch. You can buy merch tpublic.com. All the links for all this stuff are in the description. As always, keep watching movies, >> especially Robo War, which is on YouTube, and it's kind of kind of like in that weird No Man's Land where it's probably not going to get removed from YouTube anytime soon. No, probably just watch it there.
>> Yeah, you can just watch it. It's also on Tuby if you want to watch it. If you want all that glorious cussing, that's really the only thing that that's >> there's no there's no boobs.
>> There's no there's no nudity there and and and whatever there is. I mean, there's some there's some see-through shirt, shall we say, that is, but that's not edited on YouTube, at least. I'll I'll throw in a camera blur or something.
>> No, I think you'll be fine. You'll be fine. Hey, if I could get away with that, I got away with briefly in the last episode that we uploaded. I had full-on boobs on on YouTube for a while.
>> All I have to say is thank God for 320p.
>> Yes, that Yes, low resolution saved the day on that one. The the YouTube algorithm could not discern between boobs and the wall or whatever, so we locked out briefly on that until I got them censored. But that's going to do it. Uh, bye.
