Idi Amin, Uganda's dictator who ruled with fear from 1971 to 1979, was exiled to Saudi Arabia but attempted to return to power in 1987; however, his former friend Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire betrayed him by arresting him at the airport in 1989, demonstrating how political alliances can collapse and how dictators often face betrayal when attempting to reclaim power.

idi amin - The Dictator Who Fell TwiceAdded:
Hello everyone. Welcome to the clue.
This is the channel where history is not boring, you know. We tell it with gist, jokes, and plenty vibes. So today we talk about Idi Amin, the man who said, I shall return. But when he tried, his friend Mobutu betrayed him.
The story is like Nollywood mixed with CNN. So sit down, relax, and enjoy.
>> [music] >> Idi Amin Dada was born around 1925.
He grew up poor in Uganda. He joined the army, he became the soldier, and later rose to power.
>> [music] >> He was very strong. He was tall and loved sports like boxing and swimming.
So in 1971, he became president of Uganda after removing Milton Obote.
>> [music] >> And from that day, Uganda changed.
Idi Amin ruled with fear.
Many people died, many ran away, but Idi Amin was living like a king.
He loved uniforms. He decorated himself with medals like Christmas tree. He gave himself long titles.
>> [music] >> One of his titles was conqueror of the British Empire, but the British never agreed.
Imagine one man giving himself title like lord of all beasts of the heart.
Even goats no agree.
>> [music] >> Even catfish no go clap for you now.
So by 1979, Tanzanian soldiers and Ugandan exiles chased him out. He ran away. [music] First to Libya, then to Saudi Arabia. So Saudi Arabia gave him a house, a car, and money. He lived quietly, but inside his mind, he was planning to come back.
So picture Idi Amin in Saudi drinking tea saying, one day I shall return. My guy, even NEPA light no return on time.
You think you better pass NEPA?
>> [music] >> So in 1987, Idi Amin told reporters, "My people want me back.
I will lead war against Obote."
>> [music] >> He said Ugandan chiefs visited him with a plan, but truth be told, most Ugandans were tired of wahala, so they did not want him back.
Not only did Idi Amin believe his own hype, it's like that uncle who says, "Don't worry, I will win lottery tomorrow." But tomorrow never comes.
Mobutu Sese Seko was president of Zaire.
He and Idi Amin were once friends. Both liked flashy clothes and big wahala, you know?
In 1989, Idi Amin tried to sneak through Zaire with fake passport.
He wanted to reach Uganda, but Mobutu arrested him at the airport.
He deported Idi Amin back to Saudi Arabia.
Mobutu looked at Idi Amin like, "You think that You think this is Nollywood?
You know what I mean?"
