In December 1944, German commanders mocked American soldiers as cowards during Hitler's final Ardennes offensive, but General George S. Patton executed one of history's fastest military maneuvers by turning his entire army 90 degrees in just 48 hours, launching a devastating counterattack that shattered Germany's last hope of victory and transformed the Battle of the Bulge into a decisive Allied triumph.

December 1944. German commanders laughed at American soldiers as cowards running through.Added:
December 22nd, 1944. Deep inside a frozen German command bunker, SS General Sepp Dietrich laughed at the Americans.
"Merchants playing at war," he sneered.
"They run when real soldiers attack."
But only hours later, his officers burst into the room in panic. American tanks were smashing through the snow from the south. An entire US Army had appeared out of nowhere, and suddenly the hunters became the hunted. This is the true story of how George S. Patton turned Hitler's greatest offensive into a nightmare that destroyed Germany's last hope of victory. December 16th, 1944.
5:30 in the morning. Without warning, the silence of the Ardennes forest exploded. 900 German artillery guns opened fire at once. The ground shook.
Trees shattered. Entire American positions disappeared beneath fire and smoke. Then came the tanks. 200,000 German soldiers surged forward through the snow. Panthers, tigers, SS assault troops. Hitler had unleashed everything he had left. Operation Wacht am Rhein had begun. Hitler believed this attack would split the Allied armies in half, capture Antwerp, and force Britain and America into peace negotiations.
It was Germany's last gamble, and at first, it worked. American lines collapsed in confusion. Green US divisions, exhausted from earlier battles, were caught completely off guard. Units vanished in the fog. Roads jammed with retreating vehicles. German tanks pushed 20 km forward on the first day alone.
In Berlin, Nazi propaganda ministers celebrated. They believed history was repeating itself. 1940 all over again.
Another lightning victory. Then came Malmedy. Near a snowy crossroads, SS troops under Joachim Peiper captured dozens of American prisoners. The Americans surrendered. They laid down their weapons, and then the SS opened fire. 84 prisoners were murdered in the snow. News of the massacre spread like wildfire through American lines.
Suddenly, this was no longer just another German attack.
It became personal. American soldiers began taking desperate last stands across Belgium and Luxembourg. At Bastogne, the surrounded paratroopers of the 101st Airborne prepared for annihilation. German officers sent a surrender demand. Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe read the message silently.
Then he looked up and gave a one-word reply.
Nuts. While chaos consumed the north, 800 km away in Nancy, France, General Patton stood over a giant operations map. The phone rang. It was Supreme Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower. The situation was catastrophic. German armor had punched deep into Allied defenses.
Bastogne was surrounded. Entire American regiments had surrendered. Then Eisenhower asked the impossible.
