Saint Joan of Arc, a 17-year-old peasant girl from Domremy, France, who heard divine voices calling her to free France and lead King Charles VII to his coronation at Reims in 1429, was captured, tried as a heretic, and burned at the stake in Rouen in 1431 at age 19, yet was canonized in 1920 as patroness of France, demonstrating that true courage comes from unwavering faith in God's mission rather than military power.

Saint Joan of Arc — The Maid Who Heard HeavenAdded:
A peasant girl of 17, with no military training and no titles, put on armor and made the greatest power in Europe tremble.
On the 30th of May, the church celebrates Saint Joan of Arc, the maid of Orleans.
The girl who heard heaven and dared to obey.
She was born in 1412 in the village of Domremy, amid a France torn apart by war.
At 13 years old, tending her flock, she heard for the first time the voices of heaven.
Saint Michael, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret. The call was impossible, to free France and lead the king to his throne.
She had no name, no power, no weapons, only the burning certainty of a mission from on high.
And against all the logic of the world, she was heard. She received armor and a white banner on which she had the names of Jesus and Mary embroidered. That banner, she said, she loved 40 times more than the sword.
In 1429, before the walls of Orleans, the impossible happened. With her banner raised to the wind, Joan revived hopeless soldiers and led them to victory.
The besieged city was set free. Soon after, she fulfilled the promise of the voices. She saw the king crowned in the cathedral of Reims, standing at her side.
But the path of the saints rarely ends in earthly glory. Betrayed and captured, Joan was sold to her enemies and brought to an unjust trial.
Alone without defenders, she faced judges determined to destroy her.
Condemned as a heretic, she was given to the flames in Rouen on the 30th of May, 1431. She was only 19 years old, and her last breath was a single name, Jesus.
Men called her a heretic. Heaven called her a saint. Years later, the church recognized her innocence, and in 1920, she was canonized and proclaimed patroness of France. Her story reminds us that true courage is not born of weapons, but of the faith that dares to obey God even when the whole world says no.
Pray with us, Saint Joan of Arc, courageous maiden of the Lord who heard the voice of heaven and followed it without fear.
Obtain for us the grace of a valiant faith. May we raise the banner of Christ in the midst of life's battles, trusting that at God's side no mission is impossible.
Amen.
