This 5,000-year-old engineering technique involves constructing a cylindrical ring on the ground surface and using gravity to lower it into the earth while workers simultaneously dig underneath and add more bricks, creating a built-in safety shield that prevents collapse; ancient civilizations like Mohenjo-daro enhanced this method by using trapezoidal bricks that lock together tightly to prevent walls from buckling under earth pressure.

Indigenous Engineering: The Sinking WellAjouté :
Most people dig a hole to build a well, but these engineers do the exact opposite. In Pakistan and other parts of the world, people are still using this ingenious ancient knowledge to access fresh water. It requires only a little bit of pre-planning. It begins not by digging a hole, but by constructing a cylindrical ring on the flat surface of the soil using brick or other materials.
A laborer then climbs inside the cylinder and begins digging out the bottom. As the soil is removed inch by inch, gravity drops the cylinder in place as workers at the surface simultaneously lay more brick.
Historically, this method has been used with stone, brick, and even today modern concrete caissons. The genius part, it has a built-in safety shield preventing the hole from collapsing onto the diggers. Beyond just preventing the surrounding soil from collapsing inward, civilizations like Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa engineered their bricks into specific trapezoidal shapes. This wedge-like design allowed the bricks to lock tightly together, preventing the walls of the well from buckling inward toward the empty center under the immense pressure of the earth.
