Do You Believe in Hell?

[00:00:12]It's a serious question.

[00:00:15]And before we go to our callers today, a couple of reflections on the rhetoric behind refutations of hell.

[00:00:26]And these refutations are all too common today.

[00:00:30]The gospel of a second chance after death, annihilationism, universalism.

[00:00:41]Common sense in our day has given way to credulity.

[00:00:49]Peter Kreeft made that point eloquently.

[00:00:53]He said that behind the rhetoric is a dying, but still dominant humanism.

[00:01:02]A faith in man despite Auschwitz, Hiroshima, the Gulag, and Jonestown.

[00:01:13]We're still shocked when we hear about such things.

[00:01:19]Previous generations were not. Why?

[00:01:21]Because they believed in evil.

[00:01:26]Common sense distinctions between good and evil have not only been blurred by the culture.

[00:01:35]They have virtually been obliterated.

[00:01:40]Which is precisely why Eastern religions have become politically correct and popular in Western regions.

[00:01:50]In Eastern religions, the individual and his terrible burden of responsibility and freedom are removed.

[00:02:00]We think of ourselves as having progressed in our appreciation of the value of love to wit love wins.

[00:02:10]We think of love as the rival of justice and forget the necessity of justice.

[00:02:20]Justice without love is hardness of heart.

[00:02:28]But love without justice is nothing more than softness of head.

[00:02:35]Common sense dictates that without hell there's no need for a savior.

[00:02:45]Little needs to be said about the absurdity of suggesting that the creator would suffer more than the cumulative if there were no hell to save us from.

[00:03:02]Without hell there's no need for salvation.

[00:03:08]Without salvation there is no need for a sacrifice.

[00:03:14]And without sacrifice there's no need for a savior.

[00:03:20]As much as we might wish that all will be saved common sense precludes the possibility.

[00:03:31]I love what C.S. Lewis once said. He said he would pay any price to be able to truthfully say all will be saved.

[00:03:43]But reason retorts without their will or with it?

[00:03:50]If I say without their will, I at once perceive a contradiction.

[00:03:57]How can the supreme voluntary act of self-surrender be involuntary?

[00:04:05]And if on the other hand I say with their will, my reason replies, "How?

[00:04:13]If they will not give in."

[00:04:17]Ultimately, there are only two kinds of people in the end.

[00:04:22]Those who say to God, "Thy will be done." And those to whom God says in the end, "Thy will be done."

[00:04:34]All that are in hell, or more correctly stated, all who will be in hell, choose it.

[00:04:43]Without that self-choice, there could be no hell.

[00:04:51]No soul that seriously and constantly desires joy will ever miss it.

[00:04:59]Those who seek find.

[00:05:02]To those who knock, the door to heaven is opened.

[00:05:10]We have sort of opted for well, a kinder, gentler religion, but not one that corresponds to scripture.

[00:05:21]Preachers today prefer to dwell in more uplifting themes. Hell has all but disappeared and no one seems to have noticed. We've noticed and we're driving you back to a biblical world view.
