Spangler Science: How can you get an egg into a bottle?

[00:00:05]All right, look who's back, our science guys.

[00:00:08]>> Yeah, how are you?

[00:00:09]>> We're going to explain the science behind getting these eggs into these bottles.

[00:00:13]>> Yeah, you know what, we have to go backwards. I grew up in South Denver over by McKinley Thatcher Elementary and you can walk to the library. So Decker Library, the cutest library in the whole world was there. I remember as a kid, like maybe second, third grade, walking and the librarian introduced me to my very first science experiment book.

[00:00:30]There's something magical about that that I think our kids miss today. And so parents, there's still a couple weeks left. You one of the most magical things you can do is go get yourself a science experiment book, not a YouTube video.

[00:00:40]Although I do like YouTube videos, but >> [laughter] >> and you open that book and and and something comes alive. This is it. This is a classic experiment. So come here, take a look at this. These are old milk bottles. I found like it in antique store or whatever. Royal Crest was here and Denver, maybe still is in Denver, so that's that's great. So those are the bottles. And we Ryan, look at this, we need hard-boiled eggs. So that's what you need and so I took the shell off the hard-boiled egg. So here is the object.

[00:01:03]The object is to get that egg, Katie, into that bottle right there. That's what you you need to do. Well, you can't just push it in. Try I mean, you can try, but it's not going to see, it's not going to push in. So what can we do? You can create a vacuum inside and kind of try to pull it in. That's But it is a Spangler segment. That means there's fire involved.

[00:01:24]So here's what we're going to do. It's going to be coordinated. You're going to have to work as a team. So one of you will be the egg person. One of you will be the fire person.

[00:01:32]Okay. Okay, so here's what going to happen.

[00:01:34]So what will happen is this is you get to do it first and then I'll do cleanup at the very end. So I'm going to light the piece of paper on fire because if we can get the air inside that bottle hot, those molecules will now move apart. They'll push that air out.

[00:01:49]Then if you put the egg on top, you're going to see it flutter a little bit because the air is coming out and then the outside air pressure bam, right in.

[00:01:55]>> Cool.

[00:01:57]>> Yay.

[00:01:58]>> Okay, you can you can ahead and hit the light. So, there you go. Light.

[00:02:01]>> Okay, I'll light for you.

[00:02:04]>> There you go. There you go. There you go. Okay, so now you're going to turn it up There you go. Turn it upside down.

[00:02:08]Now, put it down inside. Put it down Okay, good. And now, egg on top. Here we go. Let's see the fluttering. SEE THE FLUTTERING?

[00:02:23]Good job. Good job. Watch this. Here it goes. Here it goes. Here it goes. Look at that. It's that outside air pressure that's going to pushing it in. Now, look. See, it's it's like a a HAIR COMES OUT.

[00:02:35]>> I THOUGHT IT WOULD HAPPEN.

[00:02:36]>> I'VE NEVER seen that before. You stripped the egg.

[00:02:44]>> I know. Right? He did it. He did it. All right, so here I am. It's right there like that. Here it goes. Here it goes.

[00:03:02]>> Good ones. In fact, I like this one >> Good one, he said.

[00:03:04]>> I think the most. I This is >> [panting] >> This is a good one. The whole studio is going to smell like this. Nah, I like this one better.

[00:03:12]>> [laughter] >> This is what was just torn apart. All right. Oh, this will be good. Watch this. All right, so you see the egg right there. So, here's what has to happen. If you blow into the bottle, you're going to push air into here. It's a one-way valve, and this should pop back out into my mouth. All right, here we go.

[00:03:26]>> OH MY GOD.

[00:03:30]>> AND THE CROWD [laughter] GOES WILD.

[00:03:33]>> Oh my god.

[00:03:36]>> [laughter] >> Oh, get over here.

[00:03:41]>> Do it. Do [applause] it.

[00:03:43]>> Oh, here we go. Here we go. Oh, it's No, here here I'll get it. Don't worry about it.
