Saturn's rings may look like solid bands from far away, but they're actually made of countless individual pieces. Saturn's rings are mostly water ice mixed with small amounts of rock and dust. Some particles are as tiny as grains of sand, others are as large as houses. Each fragment orbits Saturn at very high speeds, forming the bright rings we see from space. Sunlight reflects off the icy particles, making the rings shine brilliantly. So, Saturn's most famous feature isn't a solid structure at all.
It's a vast swarm of billions of icy fragments, all moving together in orbit.
