After 50, aging is not just about time passing but about how five key hormones—insulin, cortisol, testosterone, growth hormone, and thyroid hormone—become disorganized, carrying instructions that either support rebuilding or accelerate decay; these hormones are interconnected messengers that influence energy distribution, stress response, rebuilding capacity, nighttime repair, and overall system speed, meaning that lifestyle choices like muscle preservation, sleep protection, stress regulation, and proper nutrition directly impact biological aging rather than just chronological age.

These 5 Hormones Could Be Making You Age Faster After 50
Added:Two men walk into the same gym. Both are 58.
One, he moves like he still belongs inside his own body. He's got a strong grip, clear head, and muscles still hanging off his frame. He trains hard, he recovers, and then he gets on with life. The other man, he's also 58, but he feels like 68. His waist is expanding. His strength is disappearing.
His sleep is broken. His energy now that crashes halfway through the day. And every year, ordinary life seems to take a little bit more out of him. Same age, different clock. Because the number on your birth certificate is only your chronological age.
It tells us how long you've been on the planet.
On the other hand, your biological clock now that tells us a different story. It reflects how well your body has survived those years. And right now, there are five hormones that may be carrying orders through your body that are either helping you to rebuild or teaching you how to decay faster. Insulin, cortisol, testosterone, growth hormone, and the thyroid hormone. But before we go on any further, I'm Simon H, strength and structural expert after 50. I want you just to understand this. These hormones are not five villains that we need to destroy. They are also not five numbers that you can optimize with a fistful of supplements. They are messengers that carry instructions.
I mean they influence where energy goes, where the alarm sounds, whether rebuilding is supported, how well nighttime repair is protected, and the speed at which your entire system operates. The real question isn't whether you need these hormones because you need them all. The question is what order are they carrying around your body? Because after 50, aging is not just about hormones declining. It is often about hormones becoming disorganized.
Too much signal when you need less, not enough when you need more. Poor timing, poor sensitivity, and a body that no longer responds to the message that it once did. That's when your biological clock begins moving much faster than the calendar. And the first hormone that is helping to set the pace is insulin.
Insulin has been turned into a monster online. You know, you eat one potato and insulin rises and apparently you're like halfway to your grave. Now, we all know that's rubbish. Insulin isn't the enemy.
I mean, after all, it helps glucose out of your blood into your cells where it can be used or stored. The problem begins when these cells stop responding properly. I mean, you have your pancreas, it sends out insulin, but the message no longer gets heard. So, what does it do? It sends out more. That doesn't get heard. So, then it sends out even more blood sugar. Now, that stays elevated. Insulin stays elevated. And now fat starts collecting around your waist and more dangerously your organs.
your energy now that becomes unstable and your metabolic machinery starts working harder to produce an even worse result. That's what they call insulin resistant. Now, here's where most men misunderstand.
Muscle, yes, muscle that gives glucose somewhere useful to go. Muscle is not decoration. It is a metabolic storage.
metabolic protection. You see, a larger active muscle system gives the body more capacity to handle fuel entering it, which means that every pound of useful muscle gives your metabolism more room to work. So when John stops I mean starts losing muscle, stops walking, he gains fat and he's persisting in on living on ultrarocessed food and spends most of his days sitting. He is not simply becoming less fit. He's removing one of the body's most important defenses against metabolic decline. So what can you do?
Build and preserve muscle.
Walk after meals. Stop drinking calories throughout the day like your energy drinks. Build your meals around protein and real foods. Reduce excess fat. And if your waist is like getting all out of proportion while your energy is collapsing, it's probably best to stop guessing, you know, and speak to your doctor and get the appropriate blood work done because you can't judge your insulin sensitivity by looking at your bicep. And you most certainly cannot supplement your way out of a lifestyle that keeps teaching your body to store more and use less.
Now, the second hormone is cortisol.
Now, cortisol gets a bad rap and it gets blamed for everything.
Belly fat, it's got to be cortisol. Poor sleep, cortisol. Bad mood, cortisol. So, you wake up stressed. You rush through the day. You're on to eat because you're trying to lose some belly fat. Pour coffee down your throat on top of exhaustion.
and then you go after work and attack another workout, then lie in bed wondering why you feel wired and your brain can't switch off.
Now, here's a mistake. You treat every one of those pressures as a separate event. But your body doesn't. Your body does not separate gym stress from work stress, from financial stress, from a bad marriage, from poor sleep, from pain, from aggressive workouts and aggressive dieting. It receives one total bill. And if that bill keeps arriving faster than you can pay it off, your body changes priorities. I mean, it becomes more interested in it doesn't let me rephrase this. It doesn't become interested in building you muscle, less interested in producing great workouts for you, and even less interested in keeping you feeling young. It job now is to keep you operational under pressure.
Now, that's survival, not rebuilding.
And this is why the man who keeps on telling us about push harder. You know you can drive yourself into the straight into the ground while calling that discipline.
Now more pressure is not always the answer. Sometimes the answer is to stop wasting pressure you already applied.
You know train enough to create a reason to change. Then allow that alarm to come back down. Protect your sleep. Walk daily. What about breathing slowly enough for your nervous system to realize that a [snorts] threat has long passed? Stop turning every workout into mortal combat and stop stacking your training, or should I say brutal training on top of a already brutal life. Now, recovery isn't just about days away from the gym. Recovery is a return back to regulation. Which brings us to our next hormone, testosterone.
I mean, the internet treats testosterone like it's a source code for masculinity.
Low energy. Testosterone.
Poor confidence. Hm. Testosterone.
Oh, you lost your strength. Buy this test booster. Rub this cream on your balls.
Now, don't get me wrong. testosterone matters. It supports sexual function, muscle, bone, and several other important systems. But one tired afternoon does not diagnose low testosterone. I mean, poor sleep can leave you exhausted. Excess fat can disrupt your hormone environment. Severe dieting that can reduce performance and sexual function. What about illness, medication, excessive training stress and other medical conditions? You know, they all can contribute. So testosterone is not something you know you're diagnosed by how motivated you feel on Monday morning.
If you have persistent symptoms, now let's get them checked out properly.
Get yourself evaluated.
You know, not one random test taken at the wrong time and not a supplement salesman telling you what you want to hear. No, get a proper evaluation by a medical professional. You cannot chase testosterone while living a life that keeps telling your body that, you know, you're in survival mode. You know, you cannot sleep like a doctor on call, carry large amounts of belly fat, live under constant stress, starve yourself all week, destroy your body in the gym, and then expect a natural testosterone booster or TRT to clean up the crime scene. Give your body the absolute fundamentals first. You know, like strength training intelligently, preserve muscle, reduce excess fat, eat enough protein, and stop living it in a permanent calorie punishment.
Oh, and protect your sleep and stop confusing more training with better hormonal health. Now, if your symptoms persist, get them checked properly because the goal isn't to force one hormone as high as possible. The goal, especially after 50, should be to restore an environment within your body where the entire system can run properly.
Now, the fourth hormone is growth hormone. And this is where the anti-aging circus really earns its money.
Growth hormone sounds like youth in a syringe. You know, more muscle, less fat, faster recovery, less wrinkles, turning back the clock.
Except biology is never that simple.
Growth hormone releases impulses with important secretion happening during sleep. Now, it contributes to things like growth, um, metabolic and tissue maintenance.
secretion generally declines with age, but that doesn't mean that injecting more growth hormone makes an older man younger. More is not automatically better. A large part of that repair operation, it happens when you are no longer performing. It happens at night when the lights are off, when the phone is down, when your nervous system finally gets that message that it can stop scanning for trouble. Now, some men, they want to skip that part. You know, they want to train hard at the end of an overloaded day. They want to drink alcohol with every meal, stare out bright screens right up to midnight, and then keep waking up to go toilet, and then on top of all of that, buy a supplement that promises better recovery. The problem is is that you cannot outs supplement a body that never receives the signal that the day is over. So, what I want you to do is first protect your sleep timing. Keep your room cool and dark.
Reduce your alcohol and stop dragging the day into your bedroom.
Address things like snoring, gasping for air, repeated waking, and possible sleep apnea. Do all of that with a medical professional.
And importantly, most importantly, train in a way that your nervous system can actually recover from because a workout does not become productive simply because you survived it. Check out the show notes and I'll show you how I train. Now, this brings us nicely to the fifth and final hormone, the thyroid hormone. time. Think of your thyroid as part of the system helping to set the operational pace of your body. It influences things like your metabolic activity throughout your tissues. Now, if your thyroid production or function is generally low, you may experience symptoms such as fatigue, changes in weight, cold intolerance, constipation.
But here's where social media can turn stupid again. So your thyroid is is not simply a fat burning switch that you need to boost.
Too little thyroid function and activity can be a problem. Too much can also be very dangerous affecting things like your heart, um bones, muscle.
Now symptoms people blame on their thyroid can also have many different causes. That means you do you don't diagnose a thyroid condition from a checklist on social media. Now, I want you to step back and look at all five.
Insulin, cortisol, testosterone, growth hormone, thyroid hormone. Now, they sound they sound like five separate subjects, but they're not. Here's an example. Poor sleep can disrupt blood sugar control, stress regulation, testosterone, and nighttime growth hormone secretion.
Excess fat can worsen insulin sensitivity and disrupt hormone environments. And lost muscle reduces physical capacity and removes valuable metabolic storage. What about aggressive dieting? Now that can damage performance, sleep, and recovery.
Excessive training. Now, that can add an extra stressor to a system that's already struggling to regulate itself.
That means that you may not have five separate hormonal problems. You may just have one body receiving the same message from five different directions. And that message is either we have enough capacity to rebuild or we're under so much pressure that we can't do anything except survive.
Now this is the part that nobody really wants to hear because it is much easier to blame one hormone, you know, one blood test number, one missing supplement, one birthday.
But you got to remember that your body is a structure and you cannot optimize one room while the entire building is shaking. Now [clears throat] this is where hormonal health and structural strength really meet. you know, build muscle, control fat, protect your sleep like your life depends on it, regulate training stress, and use your blood work intelligently. And that's not because these five different actions make you somewhat immortal. They don't. You cannot stop the calendar from moving forward. You cannot command every hormone, and you cannot guarantee how many years you've got left on this planet. But what you can do is control the conditions in which those years arrive. You can start by giving glucose somewhere useful to go i.e. muscle. You can teach your alarm system to come back down on a regular. You can create an environment that supports rebuilding.
You can protect the hours when repair is supposed to happen. Good sleep. And you can start treating exhaustion, you know, weakness and anything metabol, you know, like your metabolic decline as unavoidable signs that your time is up.
Your biological clock is not only counting birthdays, it's recording your conditions. the muscle you kept, the sleep you protected, the stress you regulated, the weight around your organs, the training you recover from, and every warning sign that you choose to ignore.
So, no, you cannot stop another birthday from arriving, but you can stop surrendering more of yourself every time it does. Now, the calendar will keep on moving. Your job from today is to make damn sure that your body does not give up without a fight.
The mission continues.
Peace.
