This story illustrates how compassion and empathy can transform enemies into allies, as demonstrated when Sergeant Cole Mercer, a human soldier, chose to help abandoned dragon hatchlings instead of harming them, ultimately leading to those dragons becoming allies of Earth years later.

Enemy Dragons Became Allies | BEST HFY SCI FI STORYAjouté :
The battlefield was finally silent.
Sergeant Cole Mercer walked through the burned forest with his rifle lowered.
The war against the Dravari dragons had ended only hours ago, but the air still smelled of smoke and fire.
His orders were simple.
Search for survivors.
Near a broken mountain cave, Cole heard a small sound, not a roar, a cry. He stepped inside and froze.
Five tiny dragon hatchlings were hiding under a cracked stone arch.
Their scales were covered in ash. Their wings were too small to fly. One of them was shaking so badly it could barely stand.
Cole's grip tightened on his rifle. The Dravari were the enemy. Adult dragons had burned human cities from the sky.
Cole had lost friends to dragon fire.
Then the smallest hatchling looked up at him. The translator on Cole's wrist crackled. Are we bad dragons? Cole stopped breathing. Behind him, another soldier raised his weapon. Sergeant, they're Dravari.
One hatchling crawled forward, eyes full of fear. Our sky mothers left us, it whispered. They said we hatchlings slow the war.
Cole looked around the cave. No food, no guards, no heat.
They had not been hidden. They had been abandoned.
The smallest hatchling tried to spread its wing, but it was broken. We tried to be strong, it said. Are we still bad?
Cole slowly lowered his rifle.
Then he knelt in front of them.
The other soldiers stared.
Cole removed a thermal blanket from his pack and placed it gently on the ground.
No, he said quietly.
You're not bad.
The hatchlings blinked. You're children.
The oldest hatchling tilted its head.
Humans kill dragons.
Cole swallowed. Humans fight soldiers, he said.
Not children. The smallest hatchling crawled onto the blanket. Then the others followed. Cole's radio crackled.
"Sergeant Mercer, report."
"Any enemy survivors?"
Cole looked at the five terrified hatchlings.
Then he answered, "No enemy survivors."
A pause.
"Repeat?"
Cole stood at the cave entrance, rifle in hand. "I found civilians."
Hours later, the evacuation ship arrived. The hatchlings refused to leave unless Cole walked beside them.
And years later, when those same dragons grew strong enough to darken the sky, they did not return to the Empire.
They stood with Earth, because the first human they ever met did not see monsters. He saw children.
