Police launch 'UNPRECEDENTED' probe into Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor over potential sexual offencesAdded:
So, we start with the breaking news this morning that detectives are assessing possible sexual offenses as part of the investigation into Andrew Mattbatton Windsor's alleged misconduct in public office.
>> Yes, specialist officers from Temps Valley Police are speaking to several witnesses as the force assesses several alleged offenses linked with misconduct in public office. It's all relates to Andrew's period as a UK trade envoy.
>> It's complicated. Uh let's talk to our national reporter Charlie Peters. All right, spell this out for us Charlie where we are at the moment.
>> Yeah, it's an extremely complex investigation and that's the nature of the uh investigation itself. Misconduct in public office. There has been I think a misconception that this is only about his time, the former Prince Andrews as his time as a trade envoy for uh the UK from 2001 to 2011. But actually this is a wide ranging investigation considering several possible lines of inquiry and I understand that there is perhaps some frustration in Temp's Valley police that the perception since that arrest was made at the uh former Duke Sandringham estate in Norfolk in February that they're only looking at that concern about the allegation that he passed sensitive files to Jeffrey Epstein. uh those revelations and allegations uh being made after a series of releases from the US Department of Justice known as the Epstein files. But what I understand now, what we can disclose today is that Temp's Valley Police's investigation is wide ranging and is including several possible lines of inquiry. Now, misconduct in public office, it can include corruption, it can include an abuse of power and also critically it can include sexual offenses. So we understand that Temp's Valley Police, those specialist officers who include those experienced in dealing with misconduct cases in the past and also with sexual offenses as well, they are assessing a one claim in particular which was that in 2010 a woman who was then in her 20s and not British was sent to Windsor for the purposes of a sexual encounter with Andrew and was sent by Jeffrey Epstein. Now uh we have contacted uh the lawyer of of the woman involved in this allegation in this case. This was um this was made this allegation was made to the media quite recently but the force is assessing those claims and has reiterated its call for witnesses and also for victim survivors to come forward. We have heard from the assistant chief conipal of the force Ollie Wright Oliver Wright. He said that they were committed to a thorough investigation into all reasonable lines of inquiry and they're encouraging anyone with information to get in touch with us through the normal non-urgent contact channels. Now I understand that they are taking a victim centered approach and so there is no pressure on anyone to come forward.
Those specialist officers are keen for that to be occurring at a time which is appropriate and possible for those involved. Misconduct in public office is a complex issue uh particularly when it comes to the roles because it's never been prosecuted uh before. Why then are all these allegations falling under that umbrella and not being investigated as separate incidents?
>> It's a good question. So for now it's all under this myo investigation as it's known. But I understand that the force has not ruled out prosecuting under standalone offenses separately if the evidential threshold is met for individual offenses but not for the wider myo threshold as required. And as you say, Steven, there are um potential legal challenges that need to be met for the force in order for a myo prosecution to go forward. And that's because, as you say, there is no precedent here.
This is a totally unprecedented investigation. While Temp's Valley Police will have previously investigated police officers, their own ranks perhaps, they will have previously investigated lawyers, soldiers, judges, they won't have investigated a member of the royal household who was hired and worked as a trade envoy. Now, we should of course say that Andrew has strenuously denied any allegations of wrongdoing involving both these allegations of passing on sensitive information, but also sexual uh wrongdoing and any allegations of that nature. But as it stands, Temp's Valley Police reiterating their stance on this investigation and allowing us, we can now disclose today that that investigation is considering several possible lines of inquiry, including sexual offenses.
>> Okay, Charlie, thank you very much.
Well, let's talk about the impact on the royal family, shall we? Now, a GB News Royal correspondent Cameron Walker, who's also here in the studio with us.
Morning to you, Cameron. And what a headache this is for the royal family.
>> Well, yes, it's another distraction, I think, from their public work. uh the Buckingham Palace cannot uh comment for legal reasons for for for example basically uh that is completely different to uh declining to comments because they don't want to prejudice any future or potential future trial when it comes to Andrew Manbat in Windsor. When it comes to Andrew, let's remember what happened yesterday. We got all these government files released relating to his appointments as trade envoy to the United Kingdom which suggested that the late queen pu was pushing or or hoping that Andrew would take on the role between 2001 and 2011 and also the fact that he wasn't really vetted. Now the other question of course when it comes to that is well he was a member of the royal family wasn't he? He was the queen's son, the queen's favorite son allegedly and also of course, you know, in the line of succession and and continues to be in the line of succession. So, the police investigation is tricky is a tricky one because no member of the royal family, as Charlie was saying, has ever been prosecuted under misconduct in public office.
Nonetheless, he is not above the law and that is why the police are continuing their investigation. Of course, Andrew has always denied allegations against him. We have been to him several times with specific allegations including um the allegation that somebody was a woman was sex trafficked to him in Royal Lodge in 2010 which is something the police is looking into. He has always denied that.
Okay, >> Cameron, thank you very much.
