Lightning is a visible electrical discharge produced by thunderstorms that forms through a rapid process involving different electrical charges: electrons begin zigzagging downward as the stepped leader, which draws positive charge upward from the ground until they meet, allowing electrical current to flow; the visible flash is actually the return stroke traveling at 60,000 miles per second. Lightning can occur between clouds (most common), between cloud and ground, or between ground and cloud (rare). The sound of thunder is caused by air rapidly expanding from the intense heat of the lightning strike.
