[00:00:01][Music] thank you hello guys welcome to critical thinking of practical reasoning today we will be looking at factual and non-factual issues under unit one the aim of this session is to identify issues in a passage differentiates between issues and questions identified conceptions about issues differentiate between factual and factual issues what is an issue an issue is any matter that is up for discussion in other words is any matter or controversy that can be discussed or debated on sometimes people misconceive the word issue to mean a problem or quarrel but it is not that an example of an issue is a controversy on the sweetness of a cat or a mouse another example is the issue on which university is the best in West Africa you all know that UCC right yes issues are often characterized by the word whether but uh the Earth is bigger than the moon whether the red red is a color it is going to rain today to help identify issues in a passenger sentence focus on the the theme or subject matter this will help you identify what is being emphasized in the issue oh I emphasize as the issue as a city so you can try this on your own I wouldn't do that no now let's look at the two types of issues we have the factual and manufactual issues there are established methods standards criteria for settling matters and that makes the issue factual so if there are established methods standards or criteria for settling those issues that issue is factual and in factual issues if two people disagree in factual issues at least one person is wrong because definitely there's something to say to the issue and see which one is actually the case so it is raining outside it's a factual issue we can test to verify that Jupiter is made of clay we can test to verify that by going to Jupiter now we have non-factual issues that under non-factorial issues there are no standards for settling these matters so if two people arguing about a non-factual issue definitely none of them is Right none of them is wrong we can't settle that yellow is the prettiest color but you don't have any metal to adjust fire which now color is the prettiest color yeah bald-headed men are very caring um we can't say that there's an established method to determine what caring is and whether bald-headed men are really caring or not so today we've really discussed issues there are some examples in your course text that you may have to try them right today's session has been about issues we've checked on um there that we discussed issues helping us avoid unnecessary debates by clarifying weather issues can be settled or not so when you go and meet any debates anywhere at any point in time just ask yourself is these debate sets the connect is settled yes if there's there is an established method or criteria to settle those debates don't stress yourself just check verify and certainly rather than arguing for long so you can see that value-based issues are subjective and relative and therefore there are no criteria for settling those kind of issues on the other hand fact based issues are testable and can be proven to settle the issues who may be right or wrong thank you it was great having your time and attention we'll meet another time bye [Music]
