Rest day at Salamanca - Day 10Added:
[music] [music] >> So, today was a rest day in Salamanca.
Uh so, yesterday we stopped walking the Camino Madrid and we went to Valladolid for the night.
Uh and then we came over by uh train to Salamanca last night.
Wonderful to be back in Salamanca.
Really love it. Uh so, we're just resting today and doing a bit of sightseeing.
And then tomorrow we get a train or sorry, we get a bus to Zamora, which is where there.
And then we get a train to Orense.
And then the next morning we start walking the Sanabria's, which will be a proper Camino for us because we're finishing in Santiago.
I was just looking at the weather reports and it's going to be 34°. That is ridiculous.
So, we're just planning how early we can start to try and beat the heat of the day.
But, today was really cool just looking around Salamanca. I have to confess, I could sit in this Plaza Mayor all day.
What do you reckon? Is it one of the nicest you've seen?
What What time did they put the lights on last night? About 9:30.
Some of the restaurants here are a little bit touristy, so it's you got to be careful picking.
We got one last night which wasn't so so good.
But, we've had a couple of good ones, too. Sorry, I started eating before doing the video.
If you've never had salmorejo, I can recommend it. It's a cold tomato cream soup with ham and egg in it.
Really nice. And of course, we've got some padron peppers and some garlic prawns on their way. And someone's happy cuz the prawns have turned up.
And the same time again tonight, just after 10:00 p.m.
>> [laughter] >> There it is, a gorgeous square, isn't it?
So, with much sadness, we say farewell to Salamanca. We're off tomorrow morning to Orense.
But, I think we'll be back.
Maybe for a couple of weeks.
There's something magical about this place.
So, it's farewell to Salamanca. It's 10:30 at night, and we leave tomorrow early.
Lots of people out reveling and still having dinner.
We thought we'd have a a walk down to the cathedral, one last look.
But, I'm sure we'll be back soon.
So, this is the little hotel that we've been staying in, the Hospedium.
Uh it has a restaurant underneath, which is not associated with the hotel or anything.
We had a quite quite a good lunch there today.
And but, I stayed here last time when I walked the Vía de la Plata.
And the main reason is there is the Plaza Mayor, 50 m away.
And it's very good value. I think it's 70 euros, it's close.
>> [music] >> Our most important meal of the day.
We're just near the hotel, and found a great spot to get breakfast.
We're just staying at the Hospedium Plaza Mayor, which is you look down there, you can see the archway into the Plaza Mayor, and all the trucks doing deliveries. Hospedium is just there.
It's like 50 m from the Plaza Mayor.
Very good value.
Loads of places here to get breakfast.
So, fueled with a breakfast, we'll now go and check out the cathedral.
Which, as I recall, has a new section and an old section. Of course, the new section is still hundreds of years old, I think.
So, what we've been looking at so far is what is known as the new cathedral.
And now we pass into the old cathedral.
And here we are in the old cathedral.
And a wonderful altarpiece.
Just Excuse the jumping zoom.
So, I was just looking at the dates of these cathedrals. The old cathedral, which is this one, was built in the 12th century.
And then the new cathedral that we just came from, down those steps, was built in the 16th century.
I have to say I rather like the old one.
>> [music] [music] >> This is the old Roman bridge into Salamanca. You come walk across this bridge if you're walking the Via de la Plata.
This way you enter the city.
And you get your first view of the cathedral.
I have to say I recall the uh entrance to Salamanca as being rather long.
You can see Salamanca from about 13 km out on the Via de la Plata.
It's one of those sort of ends of the day where it just never seems to end.
The last few k's are through the sort of university dormitory areas and stuff like that.
But a stunning city.
I'm so glad we came back here again.
So, I'm just heading up to the bus station to buy our tickets for tomorrow.
I figured probably better to do that than last minute.
Very pleasant walk.
It's about 1.1 k's from the hotel.
So, for those wondering how to get from Salamanca to Zamora, perhaps with the intention of going on to Orense by train, this is the Salamanca bus station.
And thanks to uh a member of the Camino Forum, who explained you go to booth eight. And indeed, it is booth eight.
Zamora-Salamanca. You have to pay in cash.
There's no seat allocation.
So, I'm glad that I came up today and bought our tickets for tomorrow. It's all good.
It's always a bit stressful when you don't know what the system is and you have no extra time.
But, it seems good. So, this is the Salamanca bus station, not to be confused with the Salamanca train station. It's actually in a totally different direction.
Uh for us it was about a 1.1 K walk straight out of uh the center. So, very very close to the Plaza Mayor to give you an idea how far it is. So, this is the House of Shells, built in 1493 apparently by a professor of the University of Salamanca.
And apparently all of the shells are a different shape. They certainly look a different shape.
And yes, it's related to the waves and tides.
That's why the shells are there. We just came into the House of Shells. Let's take a quick look around.
So, we just came upstairs in the House of Shells and it's still a working library. A whole bunch of students going in and out.
