The PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve is a critical but frequently neglected maintenance component that regulates crankcase pressure and emissions; it should be replaced rather than cleaned when clogged or stuck, as a malfunctioning PCV valve can cause severe engine damage including blown rear main seals in newer vehicles, and most vehicles come in for service with this component already destroyed from lack of maintenance.

Simple engine maintenance no one does PCV valveAdded:
What a slow ass day here in Cinnamon.
And do you notice anything different in the shop? See the buildings getting painted on the inside.
Yes. And then we're going to here we put in our first new LED light. Well, we didn't and the guy who's fixing this going to fix the roof. Strip all the old lighting off. One, two, three, four big LEDs recessed in the ceiling. And then we're I don't know if I'm pretty sure we're taking that out. And then we're going to put another light strip on the bottom there just to brighten it up.
Paint and fix that. Uh the back wall is somewhat painted. Let's get into this CRV.
120,000 mi newer customer us. We already identified oil consumption. They don't know if the PCV valve's ever been done.
I don't know if the PCV valve has been ever been done. I'm going to tell you I'm going to do a list of the most neglected stupid things people can do to their vehicle. And one is the PCV valve.
Two is the air filter. Three is the throttle body. Four is the fuel injection. Five is overextended oil changes. And I not not putting them in in order of importance, but it must be just my area because vehicles are so neglected. And it is it because they're not getting a good quality level of service at the dealership and in the base or or techs just don't care. Change the oil, send it out. They don't care if there was oil in it or if it comes back with oil in it. I don't know. Um, so let's do this PCV valve. I'm going to set you guys up on the tripod and uh try and get you some content here.
That's the Nissan. We're going to see what this guy wants to fix. We're going to see what he wants to fix. This car is actually in really good shape for the 227,000 mi on the car. Um, like I said, this is a newer customer to us. You also have to plug the tire. So, I'm gonna see if I can't get you guys like right down in in it.
Does anybody here watch the new show Yellowstone? Whatever it is.
Yeah, I'm not I'm not real thrilled about that's better. And you're not going to get to see my pretty face, but here is the PCV valve. I'm going to tell you, I bet you that it's probably not in good shape. So, let's get some 10 mm off.
Let's get down in there and see what we got.
And hopefully the 227,000 mi PCV hose doesn't break in my hands because that's just the way things go around here. How about we put a fuel pump in Rachel's Saab?
Cuz you can't get an OEM one. Put an aftermarket fuel pump in there and it's chunking away.
And then Thursday last week, we were doing hump bearings on a Civic press in style and Jude presses the whole thing together and the rotor doesn't fit the machine flange. How about that? It's just basically everyday nonsense here.
So, this is the hose that runs up to the intake. It looks like this is serviceable, too. I'm wondering why it has that type of platform in there. I've never taken that apart, but I would tell you there's probably ports that go into the in Look at this.
This is a manifold for the PCV system.
>> And I'm wondering if there's ports >> probably >> that pull vacuum on it. I mean, I'm going to see a little bit more when I get down in there. I mean, the line doesn't feel great.
>> Probably,000 miles.
>> 200 227,000 mi, dude. So, do I even want to mess with that? I probably don't. What I'm going to do is try and get that clamp off on the bottom and then get that out and then we're going to see if if she can't if she doesn't rattle.
So, >> she doesn't have a good old rattle.
I'm going run to the bathroom and when you're done with that, I'll be tired.
>> The uh somebody said to me that they cleaned their PCV valve. Well, if you don't let it get shitty and disgusting, I'm all for that. But if it's shitty and disgusting, yeah, just replace it. Um some of them are just a weighted ball and then some of them also have a spring that wear too. So, heed a little warning to that.
But these springs do wear out.
I don't know what's going on in my area, but it is slow as molasses.
It started last week and uh it showed up here on Monday. And Mondays are never like this. Mondays are usually very busy.
Wednesday is usually our slowest day of the week. And Saturdays have been [ __ ] here to the point to where I think I might just not do Saturdays anymore.
We're going to see if Saturdays don't don't change there. Saturdays don't change.
This dude's going to spend more time down the shore digging for gold.
All right, so the line's not plugged, at least there. So now we're going to pull that out. Looks like it's a 17.
Let's go with that.
Is it a 17 or is it not a 17? I don't know. Oh, it's actually bigger. Maybe a 19.
No. 18. Or is my shot in the wrong spot?
Ah, how about that? My sockets are in the wrong spot.
We're going to thank Jude for that.
I always put my tools exactly back where they belong.
Anybody think that this PCV valve is good for 227,000 mi? I'm going to tell you I doubt it.
Does that look good?
Completely clogged.
So, is it the customer demographic? Is it the people not getting the right education?
I don't know what it is, but by no means is this ripping a customer off saying, "Hey, your PCV valve should be replaced every 30,000 mi." I'm going to tell you, this PCV valve has every bit of 227,000 mi on it.
Ready?
The old rattle test you saw in here. So, it doesn't take much to uh that not come with a new O-ring.
How about that? doesn't come with a new O-ring. So, let's get this one off.
Basically, just an oil drain plug washer.
So, I'm going to tell you, almost every vehicle that I see that comes in here that's a new customer is in really bad shape and the maintenance isn't done.
That's a fact, Jack.
All right. So, let's get my flashlight out. Let's try and reach our hands down there and grab that. We just had some customer telling us some some nonsense.
And I don't know why he was telling us the nonsense about some tensioner bracket on his car that we never worked on.
The same customer's car that's right besides his car that's not in good shape. He's like, "Oh, yeah. I wouldn't buy those parts. They're they're defective. Oh, there's a lot of defective parts on your car right now.
Come on.
The [ __ ] mechanics have to go through to do a job.
Where did you go? Well, let's go up in here.
Where did it go?
It didn't fall out.
I saw it drop down.
I'm going to have to go all the way up.
Take a ride on my lift. Great.
Heat. Heat.
I saw it drop. I knocked it off of there. I gave it the old bump.
Now I don't hear it.
Oh god, it's me. March.
Got it.
See if that doesn't happen again.
What I will do is see if there's a pull a vacuum in this manifold on the top of the intake. I'm going to say there's probably some type of pull on it.
Let's get the piss of V valve back in.
So when the PCV valve sticks open or sticks close, it wreaks havoc on the entire engine.
Most people don't know that it's actually in some of these newer vehicles that it blows out their rear main seals. And guess who's not standing behind that at the dealerships? the manufacturers, you know whose fault it is? Because they don't advise changing the PCV valve. So, the the consumers who have these newer cars and say, "Oh, yeah. Well, your PCV valve stuck or got clogged and it blew out your rear main seal. Well, why didn't you advise me? I've been coming here and getting my service done uh with you guys." And uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh you get the uh stutters. So, what I'm going to do is just going to put this in here just to start it.
So, what I'm going to bet you, so there is a vacuum pull on it, and this is a calibrated vacuum leak. That's what a PCV valve really is.
Calibrated vacuum leak into the intake manifold. for emissions purposes and also uh relieve pressure in the crank case.
So based on what I found there, I'm going to tell you the throttle body is probably skked and I'll advise the customer that hey I have an evasive way of doing the throttle body. Um that's it. It's just a simple maintenance that people aren't doing or aren't being advised. Every PCV valve we pulled apart has been destroyed.
