On November 20, 1943, USAAF Lieutenant James 'Jim' B. Morehead was reported killed in action after his P-38 Lightning was shot down over New Guinea, with witnesses seeing his aircraft explode and crash into the jungle. His family held a memorial service in San Francisco five weeks later, and halfway through the eulogy, the church doors opened and Morehead walked in—sunburned, thinner, but very much alive. He had bailed out at the last second, survived three weeks in the jungle with the help of local villagers, and hitched a ride on a coastal freighter back to base. When asked why he didn't call ahead, Morehead simply said, 'I figured I'd surprise them.'
