The statement condemned the government's use of Article 86 of the Communications Code and Decree 54 as tools to suppress press freedom, arguing these laws constitute a systematic crackdown on independent media and journalists. The signatories expressed full solidarity with El Hani and all journalists imprisoned for their opinions, calling for an end to all forms of persecution targeting freedom of expression in Tunisia. The statement criticized the marginalization of Decree 115, which regulates the media and publishing sector, and warned that continued prosecution of journalists and opinion leaders threatens the very essence of free expression and will further deteriorate the media climate in the country.
