Palmisano provides a lucid synthesis of technical theory and visceral performance, revealing the sophisticated harmonic logic behind Billy Corgan’s emotional architecture. This analysis masterfully demonstrates how strategic non-diatonic tension elevates alternative rock into a profound narrative experience.

Guitar Teacher REACTS: Soma - The Smashing Pumpkins [1993] - Live @ Metro HDAdded:
Howdy, my friends.
Oh, am I pushing over here? Look at that. Look at that. Look at that.
Michael Pomano here back on Guitar Gate.
Raider says, "Play slow without dragging. One of the most ripping solos of all time." This is Smashing Pumpkins 93.
Never learned this song. I actually am not positive I know which one S is. Um, >> if this is what he's actually doing, it's B major.
E major, G major. Okay. Never in the world will those three be in the same key. Okay.
Just just just putting that out there. I don't know if that's exactly what he's doing yet, but that's the tonality I hear so far.
That that right B major.
You hear that walk up to E major, right? Landing on the root.
the third of B to the root of E.
That that so what hap why am I spending so much time here? Because one I'm I'm obsessed with figuring out why things work. Okay.
But you have this B major.
So, so in B major, you got this D sharp, right? It's a major third. So, you got this, right? There's your one key. We're all in key. And then down to D natural. Why D natural?
Because if we're playing a G major chord, you bet your ass you got a D natural in there. That's the fifth, right?
So just a just again we're connecting simple chord movements with simple melodies to make it work even though it's not dietonic which means it's not in key.
Yeah. Right there.
Straight to the G. Right. Because again G major. So you have all this.
Those don't exist in any one key. It's like a harmonic minor thing.
Anyway, keep going. Keep going.
Nothing.
>> You hear that?
>> And all >> Oh, that's so cool.
is run away from you.
And she led me on.
>> Yes.
>> Down the secrets.
I can close your eyes and sleep here. How he follow. Dude, I just when you see these this early footage of these big bands, you kind of from my perspective, you see how they think and how they put their stuff together, right? Clean guitar, single coils, right? Clearly come up with came up with the chords, came up with the melody, and he's trying to sing through it. He's singing down with the melody at the same time. It's ju it's just it's just when you know what they're going to be and you watch these it just puts it all into picture. That's all I got to say.
falling.
>> Yes.
Now, don't speak to me.
Wrap my heart in you and took my shelter in that pain.
God. Yeah.
>> The of blame is your broken heart.
Your heart self.
I'm by myself.
Yes. I'm always spell.
>> Now again, I'm I'm trying to I'm trying to I don't know what I'm trying to do. Commitment to the open strings here. Okay. So, you got this, right? Then you got this this little this little lots of open strings.
I'll betray my tears to anyone calls I little F# in that bad boy.
So why F#? Okay, this establishes firmly that B is our tonal center. Okay, G was like this color, right? It's 1 4, right? And then it was this flat 6 thing, right?
And F sharp. There's your five, baby.
There's that strong pull you've been waiting for to bring you back.
One last kiss for me.
One last kiss. Goodbye.
So cool. and so delayed and so unexpected.
>> Dude, I just love it. Okay, total key change here, right? A C G to an F.
Right. Kick on the gain. Um, we're just going to keep going.
Hear those snare hits. Perfect.
What? You're getting different tones out of the snare, right? That it's just perfect.
Heat.
Heat.
Yeah.
Heat.
Heat up here.
Okay. Okay. All right. I just I don't know if I've ever seen Billy rip like this. Okay.
Soloing over the initial progression, which is the B E G. Okay. So, it moved. It modulated again.
So back into right right pushing up to get that root of the G again. chord tone soloing.
Start with the melody, melody, melody, melody. He's always been one of the best melody writers of all time. And again, it's so great to see him sing it and play it. You can tell it's on purpose.
Yeah, dude. that so gnarly because it sounds like it's got the lower octave on which is totally throwing me right uh because you can see him playing high but it's got like the lower octave on but dude you don't normally see Billy at least I I can't remember the last time I saw Billy just riff like this right so you got this that that lower octave is totally throwing It's it's it's it's totally throwing that that right. It's a D, but it's Great change.
Then you get the a D to a C there.
Heat. Heat. Heat.
Don't sleep on that quick D over F sharp that like as it comes down there. Don't sleep. Don't sleep on that.
How about how down down.
>> I love it, >> dude.
Just just a Okay, a couple things.
Number one, it is so awesome to see bands that became like the biggest band in the world and then you watch them young for like the first time. Okay, because I can tell that you're seeing somebody that came up with a chord progression that he thought sounded cool, found a melody that worked, that connected the chords and built a song around it, and then wrapped it it wrapped it up with these lyrics that are just pure emotion, right? That like totally mean something, right? Um, what was that one line? It was in the beginning like like the only other thing to do is just like get up and walk away from you, right? and like but emotionally it just continues to escalate as it goes up and like the band's great and the voice is great but what I I love like you really get to see like the structure of the song in its raw form, right? Um, again, I can tell like he is so committed to a melody, right? He's not committed to u how things are supposed to be like like switching to this chorus part, this A C G F sharp, and then immediately going to this E C G D over Fsharp, right? and then have your tonal center be right. It's bananas. But it's cool as [ __ ] And that's always the takeaway I've had with Billy Corgan is that the stuff he comes up with is cool as [ __ ] Period. And it gets stuck in your brain because it's cool as [ __ ] Um, and he's a full-blown character. Where are characters in rock and roll anymore?
