Tito delivers a balanced critique that highlights the film's visual sophistication while rightfully addressing its narrative shallowness. This review serves as a sober reminder that technical polish cannot fully compensate for underdeveloped character arcs.

CALL OF MY LIFE Review (Uzoamaka Power, Zubi Michael, Andrew Bunting, Patience Ozokwor, Nkem Owoh)Added:
Hey guys, my name is I make videos on personal finance on my other channel. On this channel I talk about other things like today and I'll be reviewing the new Nollywood film currently in cinemas Call of My Life.
Call of My Life follows Soluchi, a hopeless romantic still healing from being jilted by an ex when a work call puts her in touch with a charming man called Eli.
As she gets to know Eli, she begins to see the possibility of a kind of carefree love that she's always wanted.
Call of My Life stars Uzoamaka Power and Andrew Bunting and it's directed by Dami Twitch.
Let me begin by saying I feel like I won't do justice to this movie in this review because I didn't experience this film the way one should experience this film, i.e. as somebody in love or somebody in a relationship. I think it's relationship people that this film was meant for or made for and those people will enjoy this movie more than grumpy singletons myself.
>> [laughter] >> Anyway, let's dive into it beginning with the performances. Uzoamaka Power plays Soul in this film or Soluchi and her performance was quite good. Slight detour. The concept or the story of this film is was by Uzoamaka Power. Fun fact, Uzoamaka said that she actually worked in a call center for two years if I'm not mistaken and the character in this film, Soluchi, works at a call center. So yeah, Soluchi is into she's a whimsical character, she's into whimsical, carefree, expressive love and Uzoamaka's performance was quite good. It was it felt very believable. You could almost see Uzoamaka being a bit of this type of character in real life and she had really good chemistry with her co-stars in the film. Her bestie is Beverly Osu and the men that are vying for her affection in the film are, like I said, Zubby Michael and Andrew Obensing. Let me talk about Andrew Obensing right now and his performance.
Andrew Obensing, he was good.
Um, I had a conversation with somebody uh, who's who has also seen the film, and they said that they preferred his performance in My Body God's Choice. I believe that's the name. They were a couple in that film as well, and I think I agree that I preferred Andrew Obensing's performance in that. He was more expressive in that. In this one, he's a lover boy, but we don't get to see Lord, have mercy.
All right, guys. PHCN, our haters, we are back. It's now several days later, anyway. Um, where was I? Andrew Bunting playing Eli in the film Call of My Life.
Andrew Bunting is he's convincing, but the character doesn't have that much personality, if you ask me. But, that doesn't matter that much because Soluchi Uzoamaka's her character has enough personality for both of them. They work really, really well together. The chemistry is fantastic. And if you've noticed, they've been leveraging that chemistry to market the film. Zubby Michael plays Kalu in the film, and he provides a number of the laughs in this movie. He's funny, and um I If at first it was hard for me to believe that somebody like Kalu would or somebody like Soluchi actually Uzoamaka's character would date somebody like Kalu, but I sat beside a friend of mine, Didi, at the premiere, and Didi's an Igbo girl, and she said, "Trust me, it happens." You know, traders or men like Kalu who are very traditional and rough around the edges, they tend to like refined, classy girls like Soluchi, and it's it's the whole thing. But, coming back to Zubby Michael, he was funny, he was believable in the role. It was different for me. I mean, I've seen Zubby Michael play like a typical Igbo man, but in this kind of setting and with somebody like Uzoamaka and the character she plays in this film, it was unique. But, they pull it off quite well. I really liked the parts when they were in the playground and they were hanging out and Kalu is trying his best to get on board with Soluchi's whimsical lifestyle and whimsical things she likes to do and they did quite well together. The The Well, the legends Patience Ozokwor and Ken Erics are also in the film. And if you've seen the trailer, you know who they play in the movie. I'm not going to say who they play in the film, but they're very believable in the roles that they play.
They're a married couple in the film and it was nice to see, you know, these Nollywood legends playing married couple in the film and bringing to bear or bringing to the fore their own dynamic into the movie. Did they have a lot They had enough scenes. They had enough scenes. The movie wasn't about them.
They're secondary characters, but it was nice to see them. And they were also at the premiere.
What I liked I liked a lot about this film. Like I mentioned previously, I liked the cast and how compact the cast was. Compact, but effective, right? But, the star of this film, right? The main attraction is the visuals.
Fantastic directing from Dammy Twitch, who many of us know as, you know, a music video director. I hear that he's the one who directs most of Davido's videos. So, fantastic directing from him from the opening scene. Marvelous directing. The cinematography as well.
The DOP was director of photography.
That was Mohammed Atta Ahmed, the award-winning, you know, video a cinematographer. The visuals, the camera angles, that stuff too was brilliant.
But, a special special shout-out to the production designer on the film, Anita Ashiru, I believe her name was. In fact, when she came out, when they all came out us a bow, I think we gave her a round of applause, which is you know, it's not really normal for people to give the art director the production designer a round of applause. Normally, we clap for the the stars, the actors, but because the visuals the visuals and the art direction in this film were so brilliant, we had to give her her own special recognition. So, that was fantastic. She brought a lot of the visual elements in this film together, and it was it was a very visually pleasing film. I think she's the one who said a few people spoke at the premiere.
I think she's the one who said that it can be a bit tasking to make Lagos look like a romantic place, but you know, she pushed and the team all worked together to make it happen, and I think they succeeded. Shout out once again to her.
Costuming also in this film, I really like the costumes. A friend of mine said she didn't like Somolucci's costumes, though, but I think Somolucci's very colorful outfits and weird costume choices were a reflection of her personality, but uh nonetheless, the costumes for her and even for uh Eli played by Andrew Yol Bunson, they were really nice. And some of the other secondary characters as well, everyone looked really nice.
The hair styling as well, you know, I don't mention hairstyles or hair often, but Uzoamaka who has lots of like beautiful natural hair, they got to play with her hair in this film. She wears different hairstyles, and so does Beverly Osu, and the hair was really popping in the movie as well. Uh locations were also nice. They they filmed in a number of restaurants. Um Didi, like I said, who sat beside me, she told me that, you know, this is a restaurant in Ikeja, this is here, this is there place because I'm not really a big on I'm not a big restaurant guy, but um some of these really nice looking restaurants were places that they filmed in, and they filmed in Lagos, Enugu, and Abuja because there were Abuja scenes. I think there's like a picnic scene in Abuja, and then the part where the people swimming in like a lake, and Somolucci and Eli, they're walking on rocks, so that was in Abuja as well.
What else did I like? I like the dialogue. Dialogue was interesting.
There's some very There are cheesy lines in the film, but they're also very romantic, attention-grabbing lines. I can't remember any of them now, but there are a few of them, and when they were said in the movie, people were like, "Wow, my gosh." The ladies were finding themselves. So many like declarations of love and affection and things like that. Yeah, a friend of mine said I said lines, they cried.
>> [laughter] >> Finally, I liked that this film had relatable elements in it. It was relatable in the sense that lots of people have been in one situation or the other, maybe when you're longing for somebody, or you're not feeling someone, or somebody you're trying your best to make a relationship work, but it's just not working for whatever reason. And also looking for a sign to know if a person is the person for you.
So there are lots of relatable elements about the film. In fact, a friend of mine that I spoke to recently, who shall remain unnamed cuz I know they're worried.
>> [laughter] >> They said that they've been in Soluchi's shoes. They've been in a situation where somebody has told them that they were too accessible, and they they loved too much, and they loved too hard, that it was it was it felt overwhelming for the person. So yeah, um I think that is a bit of a It's a bit common. We've all been there at one point or the other. So yes, it was quite a relatable film for, you know, the lovers and people who have been in relationships here and there, and have been looking for love over time. What I didn't like. I didn't like that this film didn't really feel like a complete love story. Even though, you know, rom-coms traditionally aren't really like holistic, right? You don't really get the entire full story of one character or the other.
But I felt like, um for example, Soluchi and Kalu, I think it would have been nice to have known a little bit more about maybe how they met and things like that and yeah, I was about to say something that would have been a spoiler, but I caught myself just there. But that and a few other things made this film feel slightly incomplete. For example, um we didn't get to know that much about Eli played by Andrew Bunting. We could have gotten to know a bit more about the guy, right? I'm sure it wasn't his story. The movie is not his story. The movie is Soluchi Soluchi's story. But it would have felt a lot more holistic if we knew a bit more about the guy, if they paid a little bit more attention to the guy.
And I felt like, and this is maybe a separate point in terms of what I didn't like, I felt like that character only existed to serve the main character, Soluchi.
And that's not a bad thing, but I think once again, I feel like more could have been done. Could have known a little bit more about the guy, what was going on in his mind, uh particularly at certain points in the film where they're not together, kind of. I was wondering, so what was going on with him there, right? We knew what was going on with her, but we didn't know what was going on with him. So, yeah, for these few reasons of mine, the film didn't feel um very complete for me.
Oh, yes, one more thing. There is something dramatic that is introduced with one secondary character in this film, right? Like it's a big deal. And when it's revealed, they make it look like a big deal, but it's just it turns out to be not that it turns out to be nothing, but they don't do anything with it later on in the film. Like it this secondary character has a major issue.
And you would think that, okay, people would rally around to try and help this character sort out his issue, but that seems to happen like off camera at some point and you know, we see the character later on and everything is fine with the character. So, I really didn't like that. I really didn't like that. Who should see it? See Call of My Life if you are a lover or a yearner, right? Cuz this film is made for the lovers.
Or if you are in a relationship and you're happy in that relationship, I think you'll enjoy the movie. And um it also appeals to the taste of Gen Z. In conclusion, um I didn't enjoy this movie as much as everyone else at the premiere did and I felt weird about that. But I think it's because first of all, I'm not Gen Z.
>> [laughter] >> But it's mainly because I I'm not in a relationship and I've I I barely remember what >> [laughter] >> those feelings of love and affection, what they feel like, right? It it felt quite distant to me. I couldn't really relate and that affected my ability to enjoy the movie fully. Anyway, I think you get the point. Nonetheless, it was a good film. It's for who it's for, they will love it. Let me Let me just give you the jollof rating. I give this movie I would honestly in my heart of hearts I hearts I want to give it 2.5 over five jollofs, but I um let me give it three jollofs over five because I know that actually honestly if I was in a relationship in a happy loving relationship, I'd give this movie three three three jollofs or maybe 3.5 jollofs. But hey, I said I've given I'll give it three jollofs. So three jollofs over five, which isn't bad at all. The movie is doing really well in its opening weekend last weekend. I think it did 17 million from what I saw.
Uh which is fantastic. Within a week it'll probably do over a hundred million. So my point is this this film is making a lot of money. But then again, the marketing of this film is is fantastic, you know. Cuz the film has really been on a an interesting PR run lately and that's interesting to see and I'm I's good to see that it's paying off.
